I recently had a conversation with an event director in the Northwest who spent a number of years in the radio industry. We talked about his event and compared notes on the effectiveness (and future) of the media industry as a whole. “I remember when the 8-track tape hit the market,” he recalled. “I was neck-deep in the radio industry and everyone thought it would be the end of our business as we knew it. Of course, they said the same thing when cassette tapes and CDs came out too, but radio is still alive and well.”

Although radio executives like my friend Chuck thought the 8-track may spell disaster for their industry, those new mediums simply provided a way for music to reach more people, further expanding the popularity of radio through the years. When I joined the publishing industry in the late 90’s, the internet was on track to wipe print publishing off the face of the planet. Next up was the advent of the tablet and digital magazines. Of course, social media has also caused quite a stir over the past several years. But as was the case with those in the radio business, we’ve been able to leverage all of those tools (once seen as threats) to make our business stronger, and increase our ability to reach more people in different, meaningful ways.

I’ve held the title of editor here at RaceCenter for 16 years, but in 2015 I took ownership of the business, and am now the proud publisher of the magazine, which celebrates 24 years in print in 2016.

Our goal has always been, and continues to be, to inspire, inform and educate our readers.

The beauty of media in the 21st century is that we’ve got a multitude of avenues to execute this mission. Print, online, email and social reach are all part of our arsenal to disseminate unique content to our readers and viewers.

As we look to grow our audience and serve you better, we’re injecting some serious talent into the company this year. Paul Lieto has been a contributor for the past several years and is stepping into the role as editor starting with this issue. An outdoor enthusiast and talented wordsmith, Paul brings a passion for endurance sports, writing and photography to the table and I’m very excited to grow his role with RaceCenter.

Amy Clark penned an article for RaceCenter over a decade ago recanting her experience running her first marathon. We’ve kept in touch with Amy and have followed her pursuits in both journalism and running through the years. Now a seasoned marathoner and blossoming ultra-distance runner, Amy joins the team this year as our talented copy editor and digital content provider.

We’ve got a new website in the works and look forward to deploying it this year, so stay tuned.

As RaceCenter evolves from a magazine into a media company, I’m very excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for us, and those that will help connect us better with you.

The inaugural Cottage Grove Half Marathon will take place on Saturday, March 5, 2016, starting at Dorena School and continuing along the scenic Row River Trail to Bohemia Park in Cottage Grove, OR. The race features a fast and flat point to point 13.1-mile run/walk, and has a net loss of over 200 feet making for a potentially fast race. The event supports the United Way of Lane County Live United Fund.

Escape the Pacific Northwest this St. Patrick’s Day for what Runner’s World once voted the number two “Best in the U.S.” half marathon. This seems a destined accolade for an event that includes: incredible scenery, leprechauns, pub beer, a chance to win a trip to Dublin, Ireland, and thousands of participants in green—sporting beards, tutus, rainbows, and shamrocks. Since 2007, Bozeman, Montana’s Pub 317 has been putting on a one-ofa-kind St. Patrick’s Day 10K and half marathon.

Whether you run, walk, jog, or crawl the 10K or half marathon, as long as you cross the finish line, you will be entered to win a trip to Dublin, Ireland, to compete in the Dublin Marathon. Each runner will also receive a technical race shirt, a Run to the Pub pint glass, and one free beer for those of age.

If all that isn’t enough reason for a road trip, Irish eyes will be smiling on all as both courses are 90% downhill.

Lord Hill Trail Runs. For 2016, a half marathon will be added to the already diverse distance options of 5, 10, 20 miles and 50K. The races, happening February 21, begin in the South parking lot of the park. About one-third of the courses are fire road, and two-thirds are single track. There will be fully stocked aid stations about every 5 miles, stocked with water, gels, and snacks. Finishers will be treated to hot veggie soup and chili.

Howard Creek Horse Camp, in Silver Falls State Park, hosts the 6th annual running of the Mudslinger Trail Run. This 6.5-mile scenic, but challenging, course traverses single and double track trails on Buck Mountain and around the Silver Falls backcountry. Expect significant elevation gain, muddy conditions, and possible snow. You will most certainly be a filthy mess after this cowboy-themed costume event. Awards will be given for overall, age group, and best dressed.

Hot Chocolate Flows Through the Streets of Seattle The Hot Chocolate 15K/5K is back in Seattle on Sunday, March 6. The event is USATF-certified for distance accuracy, making this a good race option for establishing a benchmark for the season’s progress. Each participant will receive a luxurious full-zip fleece jacket, a finisher’s mug filled with chocolate fondue and dippable snacks, and a finisher’s Hot Chocolate Seattle medal.

Why Racing Events Makes Some Changes to Race Roster

Why Racing Events out of Vancouver, WA, prides themselves on providing top level racing and training events across Washington and Oregon, as well as giving back to the communities in which they’re involved. Over the years they’ve organized a slew of races throughout the Pacific Northwest and have raised more than $2,000,000 for local and national charitable causes. Accept the Oregon Half & Full Marathon Series Challenge Challenging yourself is often the best way to stick to any training plan. The Oregon Half & Full Marathon Series has several challenge options if you’re willing to accept. You can earn a 4, 7 or 10 race challenge medal by completing races in the 2016 calendar year, and by making your final race a medal race. If you finish in the top 10 of your age group at races, you can earn additional points that are tallied for end-of-year male and female open and masters champions. Get Your Early Season Triathlon Fix Looking for an early season triathlon to test your fitness and skills? The Beaver Freezer Sprint Triathlon is a community event that attracts racers from throughout the Willamette Valley and all over the Northwest. Started in 1993, the Freezer has been

Slinging Mud for Over 25 Years The Mudslinger kicks off the Oregon Off-Road Mountain Bike Series on April 9, in Blodgett, OR. Providing a muddy mess to two-wheel enthusiasts since 1987, the Mudslinger is the oldest cross country race in Oregon. The event offers two options for riders including a 10-mile course with 1,100+ feet of climbing, or 21-mile course with 3,000+ feet of climbing. The race begins in Blodgett, OR, just west of Corvallis. Expect wet and muddy conditions with temps in the mid to low 50’s. The Oregon OffRoad Series also includes the following popular races; Bear Springs Trap, Cascade Chainbreaker, Coast Hills Classic, Spring Thaw XC, Sisters Stampede, Return of the Jedi, and Pickett’s Charge.

Double Down for Charity The Double Five and Double Five Challenge in Lake Oswego, OR, offers runners the unique opportunity to run two events on the same day while supporting local schools and non-profit organizations. The event consists of 5-mile, 5K, and an 8.1-mile distance. Runners doing the Double Five Challenge will run the 5-miler first followed by the 5K for a total distance of 8.1 miles. Each of the two races will be chip-timed separately, then tallied for your overall 8.1 mile time. Awards will be given to the top 3 runners; males and females for the 5K, 5-mile, and Double Five Challenge.

OSU’s Spring Game, 5K, and Half-Marathon This scenic half marathon on Sunday, April 17, appropriately labeled the ‘Tour de Corvallis’ is mostly flat with two slow gradual climbs, and two gradual descents. The race starts on the OSU campus alongside Gill Coliseum and winds through Corvallis on paved roads, sidewalks, and bike paths. This event is part of the Oregon Half & Full Marathon Series. The 5K on Saturday, April 16, is one of the flattest around with only 32+/- feet of elevation gain and descent. Set an early season

PR and celebrate afterwards at the OSU Spring Game. The 2016 event date has been set to run in conjunction with the OSU Spring Game, allowing runners to complete the race and have time to cool down and change before heading into the stadium.

This fun, low-key event utilizes the Peterson Ridge and Metolius-Windigo multi-use trails near Sisters, OR. Since the race is on a trail, dogs are allowed in the 20-mile option. However, they are not allowed in the 40-mile race. The event is a fundraiser for the Sisters High School Cross Country team, and will start and finish at the Sisters Middle School.

Only a certified full marathon distance will be accepted for qualifying, and qualifying times must be run within the prior year timeframe set by the Boston Athletic Association. However, qualifying doesn’t guarantee entry, only the opportunity to register. The fastest among the pool of applicants in each age and gender group will be accepted first.

Bottom line, make certain to plan accordingly if Boston is your goal.

Dubrovnik International Half Marathon There are still entries left for the 2nd Dubrovnik International Half Marathon scheduled for May 1, 2016, in the historic and beautiful walled city of Dubrovnik, Croatia. Dubrovnik is recognized as one of the top 15 tourist cities of the world; famous for its food; and, more recently recognized as one of the filming sites for Game of Thrones.

“Last year’s event was a huge success,” noted Alen Boskovic the local event director. “We had runners from 38 countries, with over 150 from the US and over 100 from the United Kingdom. The event was first class with international runners receiving two shirts, a world class medal, an event coin and other local swag items. It has a beautiful course with lots of music. The post event fun and food in the heart of the old city were unparalleled.”

Dubrovnik is a classic place to visit as a separate vacation trip or as part of an expanded European adventure. “We are thrilled that so many who came to our first event plan to return,” said Boskovic.

BRIEFS Walk/Run for the Animals Join the Humane Society for Southwest Washington (HSSW) at the Walk/Run for the Animals on Saturday, May 7, 2016. This year, the event is celebrating its 25th birthday. For 25 years, more than 1,000 walkers, runners and 800 dogs come together at Esther Short Park in Vancouver, WA. Part race, part party, it all benefits the 8,000 dogs and cats served each year by the Humane Society for Southwest Washington. USA Track & Field has chosen Bend, OR as the location for the 2016 and 2017 USATF Cross Country National Championships. The 2016 event will occur on February 6 at the River’s Edge Golf Course which played host to the 2013 USATF Club Cross Country National Championships.

The event is certain to draw top runners from around the country itching to run for bragging rights in the heart of Bend. The 2013 event hosted top contending runners from around the country including Joseph Gray, Ryan Bak, Max King, Alan Webb, Laura Thweatt, and Lauren Fleshman.

While the course is largely the same in terrain as the 2013 Club Championships, there will be some key updates to enhance the athlete’s experience.

The course, along the flanks of Awbrey Butte, will challenge participants both because Bend sits at about 3,500 feet above sea level, and because of the ever-changing topography.

“The course is at River’s Edge Golf Course, and will circumnavigate the club house on a course roughly 10 meters wide that follows the roughs of the golf holes,” explains King. “There will be significant elevation gain and loss in each lap.”

by Masters, Juniors, and Open Races. Masters and Junior Women will race 6K, while the Masters and Junior Men run 8K. Open Women will tackle an 8K course and the Open Men will race a 12K course.

In summary, eating before a workout is important, no matter what time of day. Plan your eating based on the timing of your workout so you have enough energy but aren’t going to feel sluggish or too full. It finishes in the small ski town of Zinal, up in an alpine valley flanked by high peaks and glaciers for an authentic Alps experience. www.sierre-zinal.com

Javalina Jundred There are a lot of great 100-mile races out there. Leadville, Western States, Hardrock, etc., but if it’s the party you’re after then look no further than Javelina. way. The wind-whipped rain is stinging my face. This isolated storm is coming fast, and I happen to be uncomfortably exposed at 10,000 feet on a jagged granite ridgeline on the Continental Divide. I’m half way across the infamous 5K off-trail scramble section perched on the Continental Divide in Idaho’s tough Beaverhead 100K. Another strike. I scramble down below a jumble of granite boulders just beneath the ridgeline and crouch in a small, natural alcove. I’m not keen on getting struck by lightning. I zip up my windbreaker against the gale and wait. Two minutes — three. It’s gone. I continue my rocky

Looking for something extra tough in the mountains? Something that takes strategy and mountain know-how? Well, running a 203.8-mile non-stop, point-to-point trail race through the Washington Cascades might be your cup of tea. With over 50,000 feet of ascent, this event is not for beginners. Runners will have 16 aid stations with hot food and medical, six of which also have sleep stations and crew access.

The event starts at Mount St. Helens and finishes in Randle, WA on the White Pass High School Track. The route has incredible views of Mt. Adams, Mount St. Helens, Mt. Rainier and Mt. Hood. Runners have 4-1/2 days (105 hours) to complete the race.

If 100-milers seem boring to you, then maybe it’s time to step up to a little longer challenge. If you still want to run long but aren’t ready for the 120-mile distance, a 100K option is available. But beware; this is a tough point-to-point mountain 120-mile race boasting 99% singletrack, a 48 hour cut-off, and 27,155 feet of ascent (yeah, nearly 49,000 feet of elevation change). The race recommends having a 50mile or 100-mile race under your belt before applying. Runners should be comfortable on long unsupported runs in the mountains before attempting this semi self-supported event. With only eight, albeit well-stocked aid stations, some of which are nearly 20 miles apart, runners need to be prepared and comfortable in unpredictable fall mountain weather in the Cascades. Newbie’s need not apply.

“Bottom line, I love relays because of the bonding,” said Teresa Wymetalek, a veteran relay runner. “Spend a full day or weekend with your friends (or strangers who will soon be friends), and you’ll have a unique connection.”

Wymetalek, a Beaverton, OR resident, has participated in one day and overnight relays across the Pacific Northwest. She likes to run and meet people, and the relay events allow her to do both and have fun.

“Relays bring those two loves together,” Wymetalek said. “The bonding and memories created on relays are priceless. Though

there have been relays I’ve claimed I would never do again, usually said right after the relay with too little sleep, I would do just about any relay with the right offer/ team. You aren’t just bonding with your teammates cheering you on; you’re bonding before with the planning, during while navigating, etc., and after, as you relive it.”

If you have never run relays before, there are few things to know about picking a relay, choosing team members, training and packing for the relay.

Which one?

Hood to Coast, Cascade Lakes Relay and Spokane to Sandpoint are just a few of the overnight relays to choose from in the Northwest. In addition to the overnight relay option, many race directors are organizing one day relays.

“All of our relays are ‘one day relays’

which are becoming very popular,” said Pattric Langley, co-race director of the One Day Relay Series. “There is no need to secure two vans, twelve participants, and overnight accommodations. It’s a one day event and you can be home in time for dinner, and sleep in your own bed.”

Overnight relays have a few more logistics involved, including van rentals, sleeping bags and other overnight necessities, warm clothes for nighttime running, headlamps, and additional food and hydration.

The most enticing part of choosing a one day relay is being able to go home at the end of the day, and sleep comfortably.

Once you decide whether you want to do an overnight relay or just a single day event, determining whether there are even spots available for 2016 is the next step. Popular races such as Hood to Coast and Cascade Lakes Relay fill up the within days or hours

of registration opening. The key is to get in the lottery and register a team, and then pick individuals for the team later.

“CLR is one of the most popular relays in the country to gain entry,” said Assistant Race Director Courtney Ulrich. “CLR conducts a lottery and sells out each year during registration between October 1-5 of the prior year. To be part of the lottery, team captains must register during those five days. The only guaranteed entries are inaugural (2008 teams), overall winners, division winners, some contest winners, and then we leave room for a few charity and sponsor teams.”

Hood to Coast does a lottery in midOctober for the following year, and fills up on “Opening Day” of registration. Being prepared for the lottery date is crucial to gaining a team entry.

Another component to picking a relay is location and scenery. Almost all relays

boast incredible scenery and are point-topoint, so you really cannot go wrong.

“Almost every relay claims to have scenery,” said Sawtooth Relay Director, Terry Hoebelheinrich. “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You almost always will see antelope, elk and deer. Bring binoculars for the mountain goats. You are unlikely to see the wolves and cougars as they avoid humans. Many years the wildflowers are in full bloom along the Sawtooth valley.”

Picking Your Team While the legs you run for the relay are on your own, it is important to pick teammates who share your goals (run fast, just finish, have fun, etc.), and will be there to encourage you when you are on your third leg of a one day or overnight relay.

“My first relays were with co-workers and they were a great opportunity to get know each other,” said Bruce Ramseyer, an experienced relay runner. “My favorite

times have been when I was able to run with my mom and my brother. I think is fairly difficult to not have a great time, but having a close group will ensure you’re committed to having enough runners for the event.”

Langley and the One Day Relay Series Group offer a link on their website “Find a Team/Find a Runner” to help connect runners to teams.

Another important part of picking a team is determining how many team members are allowed both from a minimum and maximum number. If you want to run fewer legs (usually 2-3 legs is minimum per person for a relay) and distance, then having more team members is important. For a challenge, having fewer team members means each person runs longer legs (running back to back segments) or more legs (not consecutively, but with shorter rest in the rotation).

each,” Kerry Loehr, Co-Director of the Gorgeous Race Series, said of the relays they do. “We have yet to have a solo runner tackle any of our relays. We set all of our relays in gorgeous locations in order to showcase the beauty of Oregon. They range from one running leg each (26 miles) to two running legs each (60 miles), with each running leg being approximately 5 miles in length.”

Training for the BIG EVENT Once you have your team members and you know how many legs and approximate distances you will be running, the training for a relay depends on several factors: the longest leg of the relay you will run, the time between legs, and whether you will be

running overnight or not.

“Running twice in one day and simulating the distance of your two longest legs would be very helpful,” said Langley. “Even one or two doubles in your training will go a long way. Practicing stretching techniques in the cramped quarters of a van or SUV can also be helpful.”

For overnight relays, doing a couple of training runs at night followed or preceded by a morning run conditions the body to run in a state of lactic acid build-up and fatigue.

“I like to stay conditioned to jump into a half or marathon, so I don’t specifically train for relays,” said Wymetalek. “I’ve watched a lot of ‘weekend warriors’ get injured by not properly training, so training is definitely suggested. For most relays I’ve done, the

courses vary with each leg, so training should too, with some longer flat runs, some hill repeats, etc.”

The “Go-To” Packing list Whether you like Snickers bars for long runs, Shot Blocks, GUs or just plain Gatorade, knowing what your stomach can tolerate and what energizes you is crucial for relays.

And, more importantly, what will refuel and rehydrate your body best to be able to turn around run another leg in 2-3 hours.

Even more important for relays, though, is having a change of clothes to wear after each leg. Sometimes a clean pair of socks can make all the difference when you step out of the van or car for another four miles in a short time span.

“Comfort is my biggest thing, so I pack my boots and parka if it’s going to be cold and sandals with my parka when it’s hot,” Wymetalek advised. “For each and every leg, I pack my clothes in a Ziploc bag, which is terrible for the environment, so I hate to encourage it, but it’s what I do. It makes it nice to put my sweaty clothes in the bag and seal it up and my team appreciates they don’t have to smell my stink.”

Other “must-have” items include Body Glide to prevent chafing, sunscreen, first aid kits and a headlamp for overnight relays. It is also important to know what support the relay provides, as well such as aid stations and their locations.

“The team vans act as support for their runners,” Loehr said. “That means each team van should be stocked with basics like food/snacks, water, extra clothing, toilet paper (we provide porta potties but it’s always good to have extra just in case).

Oh, and tunes! Vans must have tunes. Van decorations are also a must in relays; they showcase each team’s unique spirit.”

Ah, the start of a new running year. What a wonderful time. The delightful newness of turning the page: new goals, new resolutions, new training plans, new races, and of course, new shoes. Is there anything better than opening up that cheap cardboard box and getting the first whiff of new shoe smell? No. No, there is not.

Yet for all of those who love the thought of change in the new year (raise your hands up high!), there are more than a few folks out there that would be just as happy to have the changes slow down a bit. While the sport of running does not careen down the “shiny new trend” road as quickly as some activities, the industry of running is hardly

immune to the lure of a new fad. To name a few contenders: traditional running shoes versus the latest concept, the most recent adventure race versus the long-established 5K, or the lure of buying shoes online versus your local running store. The coming month offers everyone plenty of complex options. Will you embrace the changes?

Independent Running Stores Online shopping has been growing year after year. There’s no reason to think 2016 will be any different. In many ways, online shopping has been a welcome revolution: more selection, lower prices, and no need to even leave the house. There’s no question, however, it has gravely hurt many brick and mortar stores. Among the most

embattled are: the department store, the bookstore, and yes, the running shoe store.

Still, a small number of independent running shops continue to develop and thrive. How? Through a clever mix of strategies, and by offering services that online sellers couldn’t match, even if they wanted to.

Few stores have shown these adaptive strategies and staying power better than Super Jock ‘N Jill in Seattle. As store manager Matt Tebo explained, “The Greenlake store just celebrated its 40th anniversary, and we are very happy that the community continues to support us. We opened our Redmond store in October 2014, so about 14 months ago. To put that in human development terms, a 14 month-old child would be starting to not only walk but run full tilt, and that

Second, running shops are getting creative in bringing runners together. Group runs starting at running stores are becoming an everyday occurrence, with some retailers holding multiple runs throughout the week, catering to different paces and focus.

Tebo sees the value in growing these groups. “Weekly running groups are huge to us. To have a community that you see every week really allows us to grow a relationship with the people regularly visiting our store.

Running Nation 2016 PR work we need in terms of community outreach,” he said. “It is a very particular person who gets out for their run at 6:30 at night during this time of year in Seattle. Yet we have 25-35 people every Monday who show up for our group run. And 15 or so who do the same in Redmond. We enjoy being a place where these communities can gather.”

Finally, online shoe sellers simply can’t match, and aren’t interested in matching the depth of running knowledge found at nearly all independent running stores. Tebo elaborated, “Online sales have allowed for an increasingly engaged customer interaction. Even within the relatively short time I have worked here, the questions and thoughts of our customers have become incredibly more sophisticated and nuanced. This demands that our staff is ready to discuss any aspect of footwear at any level necessary. And sometimes a perfect answer eludes us, but the ability to problem solve in real time with a multitude of shoes readily available is a massive advantage,” he said. “In some ways rather than watering down what specialty running is, online sales have allowed us to become more relevant with every level of athlete who makes the trip through our door.”

What will be on your feet in 2016?

And it’s safe to say there will be something on your feet. Barefoot running seems to have been all but forgotten and left to a few, truly hardy souls. That brief, somewhat frightening moment in time seems to be safely in the rearview mirror. Even its spiritual descendant, the capital “M” Minimalist Movement, has seen its star fade a bit over the last few years. That said, many minimalist tenets have found their way into both major and minor shoe manufacturers offerings, mainly: low or zero drop profiles, lightweight, and little or no extraneous overlays of different materials.

After a few years of running in stiffer, flatter, simply less forgiving running shoes, it was entirely predictable that a backlash would come. The backlash always comes.

And so maximalism was born. Yes, another “ism.” To be honest though, maximalism can be defined quite easily: lots of cushioning. Lots and lots. It shouldn’t be a surprise that sales of maximalist shoes took off and continue to show promising numbers heading into 2016. Who doesn’t want to be more comfortable when running? Let’s face

it; running is an inherently painful activity.

Running sometimes hurts your feet. So who wouldn’t want more cushioning on their feet? And more cushioning will be just the thing in 2016, with almost all major brands jumping into the water and releasing at least one maximum-cushioned model.

Tebo likes where the trends have led. “We are happy with where the market is now.

When barefoot and minimalist shoes really exploded, it was a tricky time for us. The transition most people took from a regular shoe to a minimal shoe was a little quick for our liking, so we encouraged caution. We

hope that people leave our store with what they want, but we don’t want to see anyone injured because of our recommendation.

Then maximalist shoes really took off and again we were cautious about who we would recommend something like that to,” he said. “At the moment we feel that the market has stabilized somewhat, but the ideas from both minimal and maximalist shoes are now becoming incorporated into what we consider to be the “norm” for shoes. This is where we hoped things would go all along. In terms of buying patterns, we get fewer questions about minimal/maximalist shoes in particular, but we get to have a rounder conversation when fitting our customers even for what might be considered a “normal” shoe.”

Race Trends Race trends have been holding steady the past few years, and 2016 will likely see more of the same. The longer distances and trail runs are growing in number of races, and number of participants. The shorter

distances are holding steady or slowly shrinking. So expect even more choices in marathon and half marathon events, and expect them to be more crowded. According to Running USA, participants keep drifting away from the 5K and 10K events. It may be hard to tell at first glance however, since there are nearly 20,000 5K and 10K events in the US each year, versus around 4,000 half marathon and marathon races.

Tebo sees racers and the race environment up close, but chooses to focus on the starting point for his customers rather than the finishing event. “I don’t think we have seen a huge surge in people solely doing obstacle or adventure races, but I would say that theme runs do seem to attract the most attention. Where I think we still see the most growth is in the person looking to do the couch to 5K training plans,” he said. “I would make the distinction that we don’t watch for things much in terms of young or old, or traditional-racing versus obstacle-racing. We see it as movers, and people wanting to get moving. I hesitate

to even say runners because people who exclusively walk make up a huge number of the groups coming through our door.

There are definitely the competitive crowds that keep our race center hopping, but that number pales in comparison to the people who just want to get out for a run or walk 2-3 times per week, or who want to get back into a routine similar to that.”

So perhaps the changes we make, or don’t make to our routine are not really the point.

Perhaps we embrace a new shoe or a new race distance. Perhaps we run in our 18th consecutive marathon. In the end, getting up, getting out and moving is all that truly matters. Get out there and do whatever makes you happy in 2016, just as long as you’re getting out there in the first place.

Running Terminology Base: This refers to how many miles you are running. If you are running 30 miles a week, you have a 30-mile base. For beginning runners, it is extremely important to build a base before doing speed workouts.

Fartlek: The original meaning comes from the Swedish word for "speed play." This term is typically used to describe timed workouts, where you might do repeats of two minutes of hard running followed by a one-minute recovery pace, as well as other variations of workouts.

Interval: Often used to describe a speed workout, this term actually signifies the recovery period during that specific workout session.

As an example, one might say they are doing 800-meter intervals with 3:00 recovery.

Long Run: This is used to signify a run, usually done on the weekend, which is the longest of the week. In many cases, it is significantly longer than the typical run, often adding up to 20-25% of the runner's weekly miles.

VO2 Max: The maximum volume of oxygen a person can consume during exercise, which is often used as an indicator of an athlete’s potential in endurance sports. A VO2 Max test is typically conducted on a bicycle ergometer or treadmill and is measured in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body mass per minute.

Aerobic Threshold: The point at which anaerobic energy pathways start to operate, is considered to be around 75% of maximum heart rate. To calculate your maximum heart rate (MHR), simply subtract your age from 220.
