challenge, I reluctantly said that I’d consider it. After shedding 60 pounds in the preceding 18 months, I had a new-found sense of confidence. Couple confidence with endorphins and you have the makings of a “bring it on” attitude. I’m sure many of you know what I’m talking about…

That single 8K in the streets of Portland changed my life— literally. I followed it up with my first marathon, then my second, then eventually into the sport of triathlon. Once triathlon took hold of me, I was bound and determined to try and make a living in the endurance sports industry. Little did I know where the path ahead of me would lead…

It was a sunny Sunday afternoon at a trailhead in Mac Forest, just north of Corvallis, during my senior year of college when I met John and Susan Gallagher. We chatted about running and they explained that they owned a running specialty store in Salem — Gallagher Fitness Resources. During the course of the conversation, we were discussing upcoming events and race schedules. The blank look on my face must have been telling because John asked, “Have you heard of RaceCenter?” Admittedly, I didn’t know what he was talking about, so he invited me to swing by the shop on my way back to Portland the following week to pick up a copy.

Two words: game changer. Six months later, I found myself working for the magazine, and within another four months, I was at the helm of the ship — where I’ve been for nearly 16 years.

Good fortune, endorphins, my friend Jeremy and the kind-hearted nature of the Gallaghers set me on a path that has been so rewarding. Although it’s probably long overdue, I wanted to extend a hearty ‘thank you’ to Jeremy, Susan and John. Their words of encouragement and willingness to be a resource changed my life. In that spirit, I strive to provide RaceCenter as a resource to all of you — my fellow endurance athletes in the Northwest. As always, I welcome your feedback.

POWERMAN North America, a duathlon series, has selected the city of Stanwood, Washington to host its only west coast qualifier for the 2015 POWERMAN National Championship. POWERMAN Washington will be held Saturday, April 11th, while the National Championship will be held in South Florida in late 2015.

The POWERMAN Sprint race is a 5K run and 30K bike ride, followed by a second 5K run. The POWERMAN race, which is the qualifying event for the National and World Championships, consists of a 10K run, 60K bike ride, and 10K run.

Both races are open to athletes of all levels.

“We are very excited to secure a three-year commitment to hold this world class event in April in Stanwood and Snohomish County,” stated Stanwood Mayor Leonard Kelley. “POWERMAN North America organizers have designed a challenging course through Stanwood and surrounding areas.” Kelley added, “We are planning a number of special events on race day to bring a large group of spectators to Stanwood to watch the race.”

Whidbey Island Marathon/Half Marathon Celebrates 14 Years Just north of Seattle, nestled in Washington State’s Puget Sound, is Whidbey Island.

This Marathon and Half Marathon is sure to be scenic as you run on country back roads and along waterfront coastlines, taking in views of snow-capped mountains and rolling hills. The event, held on April 19th, also hosts a 10K, 5K, and 1K kid’s run. The Marathon is a Boston qualifier, as well as being USATF certified.

Reach the Beach Kick off the cycling season on May 16th with the 25th anniversary of Reach the Beach. This event, supporting the American Lung Association, has four course options to choose from, all relatively flat, and each ending in Pacific City. Start your ride in Portland for 100 miles, Newberg for 80 miles, Amity to cycle 55 miles, or break into the season with an easy 28-mile route rolling out of Grand Ronde. The event is fully supported and provides a continental breakfast, two lunch stops, several rest and snack stops, medical and mechanical support on course, baggage transfer, and a gourmet finish line dinner and beach party.

Mt. Bachelor to Mt. Baker; May’s Multisporters An endurance athlete of any kind, who calls the Pacific Northwest home, most assuredly has heard of the US Bank Pole Pedal Paddle and the Ski to Sea Relay.

Both events have a rich history that raise their winners to local lore status. Pole Pedal Paddle, held this year on Saturday, May 16th, is comprised of six legs that include alpine skiing/snowboarding, cross-country skiing, biking, running, paddling, and a sprint to the finish. The race starts at the top of Mt. Bachelor’s Red Chair and finishes aside the Deschutes River at the Les Schwab Amphitheater.

Ski to Sea occurs one week later on Sunday, May 24th. It also has a mountain top start and water bound finish. Starting with a cross country ski at Mt. Baker, participants follow that with a downhill ski/snowboard, run, road bike, canoe, cross country bike, and a finishing sea kayak. Both events are primarily team oriented, though the individual category is hotly contested at the Pole Pedal Paddle.

Three Mother’s Day Options for PNW Runners The Mother of All Marathons The Eugene Marathon moved its date to May this year with new additions to be introduced during this Mother’s Day weekend of events. The festivities will run May 8-10, and will be hosted at Track Town, USA, home of Oregon University’s famed Hayward Field.

All the established running events are again slated to happen, including the Kids Duck Dash, 5K, Half Marathon and the ninth annual Eugene Marathon.

Roadtrippers looking for a Boston Marathon qualifier may want to venture to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho this Spring. The Coeur d’Alene Marathon, which also hosts a Half Marathon and 5K, starts and finishes downtown while primarily running the Centennial Trail along the shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene. This is a small two-lap marathon, with last year’s event bringing in just under 200 finishers.

While small, this isn’t a new race - it will celebrate its 38th running this year. Though Coeur d’Alene sits at an elevation of just under 2,000 feet, the course itself has little gain or loss. The top three finishers all broke three hours in last year’s running.

Happy Girls Race Series Returns in 2015 The first of the events in the Happy Girls Half Marathon Series is a women’s only event held

in Bend, Oregon on Saturday, May 30th. Men are encouraged to volunteer, or better yet, participate in the event as pacers. The scenic route starts on the Deschutes River and includes a mix of gentle trails, groomed paths, and paved surfaces. Rather than the custom ribbon or trophy-style award given at most events, Happy Girls Half Marathon finishers have traditionally received a piece of custom jewelry. Aside from local beer flowing post race, expect cocktails whipped up by Bendistillery.

Happy Girls can also be found in Spokane, Washington, and Sisters, Oregon, later in the year. Run through the rolling terrain of Eastern Washington on September 26th, or tackle a trail version of the Happy Girls Half Marathon in Sisters on October 24th. Briefs 2016 USATF Cross Country Nationals Bend, OR The 2016 and 2017 USATF Cross Country National Championships will draw the top runners from around the country to run for bragging rights in the heart of Bend, Oregon, at the Rivers Edge Golf Course. The event, currently slated for an early February running, will send the fittest athlete home with a title and cash.

The National Championship racing will play out at Rivers Edge Golf Course which hosted the 2013 USATF Club Cross Country National Championships.

Although the course is largely the same in terms of terrain, there will be key updates to enhance the athlete’s experience.

USA Triathlon Announces 2015 Junior Elite Series USA Triathlon released it’s selection of events that will comprise the 2015 Junior Elite Series, naming Monroe, Washington, as host to the USA Triathlon Monroe Youth Elite & Junior Elite Cup. This will be the only event on the west coast providing athletes the opportunity to qualify for the 2015 USA Triathlon Youth Elite and Junior Elite National Championships.

The USA Triathlon Junior Elite Series serves as a talent identification and development pathway for the organization’s High Performance program.

Athletes and teams participating in the series prepare specifically for draft-legal racing and participation is open to athletes ages 13-19 who will compete in the youth elite (13-15) or junior elite (16-19) divisions.

At each event, a maximum of the top 17 junior elites and top 19 youth elites will automatically earn a spot to compete in their respective division at the 2015 USA Triathlon Youth Elite & Junior Elite National Championships, set for August 1st, in West Chester, Ohio. Portland Marathon Gives $150,000 to Charities The Portland Marathon has a rich tradition of giving back to the community for over 35 years. The not-for-profit organization gave 100 donations and grants valued at over $150,000 to local nonprofits, service clubs, school activity groups, and school athletic teams from proceeds raised at their 2014 event. It is truly Portland based, as nearly all the entry fee money from the registration of over 10,000 participants stays in the Portland area.

“The impact of the donations in the community has been a great reward for the Event to be a part of, not only by assisting groups needing support, but also as a catalyst for those groups which in turn pay their money forward into programs which they support,” said Event Director, Les Smith.

I’d also suggest bringing layers, including one waterproof jacket, a hat and gloves, just in case it rains or the temperature fluctuates. A second pair of shoes can also be a nice addition if you have room in your suitcase. It’s not necessary to have two pairs of shoes, but it can be really nice if your shoes get soaked one day or you plan to run on different types of terrain.

9 Ways to a Fast Marathon DAVID LANEY

Having raced every distance from 100 meters to 100 miles, I’d have to say 26.2 miles is probably my favorite event. Elements of both speed and endurance are combined to create a race that is just long enough to get some serious chafing, but not so long where the chaffing actually scabs and scars.

Essentially 26.2 is long enough to destroy you, but just short enough to keep you coming back for more. Here are a few rules and thoughts to keep in mind if you are thinking of graduating to the marathon.

This is written for anyone, but it is most applicable to competitive-minded runners with a background in track and cross country who have trained consistently for a few years. It’s not so much focused on specific training, but rather just general principles.

These have been important in my training, and I believe they are applicable in many training programs.

No. 1 Don’t forget the track. It’s easy to focus on road running, long runs, tempo and threshold workouts, while neglecting the speed that is imperative for racing. You don’t really need to be doing 200’s every week, but regular kilometer and mile repeats will undoubtedly help you keep the speed needed to run a competitive marathon. Do them on grass, track, or dirt. You may struggle to run as fast as you normally do when training for cross country or track.

That’s OK - focus on short recovery rather than blazing intervals.

No. 2 Sunday’s not for Gossip. College long runs are usually a social hour (or two), recapping the team drama or previous night’s festivities. This is great if you are training for a 5K. With your key race being over two hours, the long run needs to be a more focused effort. This isn’t to say that talking isn’t allowed, but the long run should be a workout. If I’m running hard enough I

usually don’t want to talk. Sunday long run shouldn’t leave you ruined for the upcoming week, but it should leave you wanting to spend the rest of the day on the couch.

No. 3 Wear Pants: If it’s under 50 degrees (Fahrenheit), bundle up. The first glimmer of warmth or sunlight usually leads to every dude on the team pulling out the split shorts and running shirtless through campus. This is why so many people get injured during the winter. Wear tights, wear a long sleeve shirt. You don’t have to be sweating profusely, but wearing tights will keep your muscles warm, relaxed, and less likely to get injured. When the temps warm up, instead of being stuck in the pool aqua jogging, you will be able to run outside...in shorts.

No. 4 Wake Up. Marathons typically start before 8am. Waking up 3-4 hours before the race will make you feel and perform better.

I know waking up at 4am sounds ridiculous on a night when you just want to get some sleep. If you give yourself that extra time to really wake up, eat, and warm up you will feel fresh and ready when you finally get to that starting line.

No. 5 Don’t be Stupid. Depending on your fitness and goals a training segment may be 8-14 weeks. During that time you are bound to get a cold, tweak a muscle, have a bad workout, or get stuck in a blizzard. These things aren’t the end of the world (except possibly the blizzard). If you respond properly to these blips in training they likely won’t affect your race at all.

Last fall I took a trip to Boulder, Colorado for a Nike Trail meeting. When I left home it was 55 and sunny, but when I landed in Denver it was 20 and snowing. I had mile repeats scheduled for the next morning.

When I woke up it was 15 and there were 4 inches of snow blanketing the town. I jogged out of the hotel looking for a plowed

road or track that might allow me to do the workout I had planned. I quickly realized that running 4:40 pace in snow, ice and 15 degrees was likely going to result in injury.

Instead, I ran 10 miles easy and called it a day. The next day the conditions were worse and I was forced to do an easy 90 minutes on paved streets. When I landed in Portland I eagerly got my gear together for a hard workout. When I got to the track and finished my warm up my right Achilles tendon was painful and seemed swollen. I tried to do strides but every step was causing it to tighten up. I realized that during my runs in Boulder I had worn long tights and tall socks, covering my entire Achilles and ankle, but the snow had still frozen to my socks and caused the area around my ankle to stay cold while I was running on it.

Needless to say, I was frustrated. I had missed two key workouts and now was tiptoeing around a potential injury. I foam rolled, iced, pumped anti-inflammatory, got back to sunny Southern Oregon and restructured the training for the week. That Saturday I had the best workout of the segment. I was fresh and was able to run faster and easier than I had expected. The workout convinced me I could PR in every distance from 10K to the marathon and gave me a boost of confidence going into the last three weeks of the training block before the Cal International Marathon. It’s a long story but I think proves a point. Things are bound to go wrong. When they do, use logic and reason to adjust your training.

No. 6 Find a Road and Love it. Whether it’s a bike path or road, find somewhere with little traffic that you can use a couple of days a week for your tempo, threshold, marathon pace, or long runs. Having consistency in your training venue will allow you to gauge your fitness throughout the segment. It might be boring at first, but you will probably grow to love it.

No. 7 Dial your nutrition. If you don’t take time to figure out which gels work and which ones don’t, you might end up in a portatoilet at mile 18. You still might end up there, but spending a few workouts deciding between GU, Roctane, Power-Gel, Hammer Gel or Clif Shots can save you precious time.

You’re going to have to take in calories and fluid during the race. Be comfortable with it.

No. 8 Run a Lot. Mileage isn’t the only indicator of solid training, but going from racing 10K’s to racing marathons will require an increase in something, and part of that something is weekly mileage. You don’t have to run 140 miles per week, but also don’t be scared of running more miles than you have before.

The marathon is a long race and it takes a lot of training to be ready to race that last 10K. This is where the magic of the marathon happens. Having a deep mileage

If you have a bucket list of “Marathons to Run”, then be sure to add the Missoula Marathon, and maybe even move it to the top of your list.

“2015 will be the ninth year of the event,” said former Race Director, Anders Brooker. “When a runner or walker arrives in Missoula for the marathon race weekend, you’ll find a town who loves the event and everything about the races over three days. Every hotel, retail store, or restaurant knows the Missoula Marathon is happening and is be excited to wish all participants good luck. “ Starting on the Friday night of the race weekend, there is a Free Beer Run. Saturday morning features a 1200+ participant 5K, Kid’s

Marathon, and expo. The main event is on Sunday when more than 5700 people flood the roads of Big Sky Country for the marathon and half marathon.

“From the rural roads covered in the first half of the race to the downtown finish on the Higgins Avenue Bridge, the marathon showcases the best of Big Sky Country,” said Tony Banovich, current Race Director and executive director of Run Wild Missoula. “In 2010, the Missoula Marathon was named the Best Marathon in United States by Runner’s World Magazine. In 2011, the Missoula Marathon was named the Best Tourism Event by the state of Montana.”

Of course, the real reward for running comes in the form of post-race food from the Good Food Store and a free beer from Big Sky Brewing.

In addition to the Marathon, Run Wild also promotes races such as the Pengelley Double and Single Dip on June 6, 2015 and Diva Day on October 3, the latter celebrating women with a 5K race. Named for Dave Pengelley, a local outdoor enthusiast who passed away in a mountain climbing accident in 2013, the Pengelley Double and Single Dip event features a challenging half marathon with 2700 feet of elevation gain and a 10K. The Runner’s Edge, a specialty running store and events company owned by Brooker, also puts on several popular races.

“Our most talked about events are the Ten Spoon 10K (6.2 miles

from a local vineyard), 11 Miles to Paradise (single track trail race that finishes at a hot springs and bar), and the fun summer trail run in town, The Marshall Mountain Trail Runs (trail races that take place at a ski hill with beer, barbeque, and live music at the finish),” said Brooker whose store was named Top 50 Running Stores in 2014.

Non-racing visitors looking for a place to play outdoors in Missoula are treated to more than 68,000 acres of designated recreation space within minutes of town.

Most recently, Missoula was named to the Ultimate Adventure Bucket List 2014 by National Geographic Adventure and awarded SportsEvents Magazine’s Readers’ Choice Award — 2014 Places to Watch.

The Clark Fork River runs through the heart of Missoula and includes Brennan’s Wave where kayakers, river surfers and stand-up paddle boarders can enjoy year round fun (if they are brave enough!).

In July, the SUP CUP takes place on the Clark Fork River and guarantees four miles of paddling fun and most likely a head wind.

The runners, walkers and hikers in Missoula share the trails and roads with a vibrant cycling and mountain biking community. In 2013, Travel Channel named Missoula Top 10 Cycling Cities in the US. On June 20, 2015 the Pro Mountain Bike Cross Country Tour (XCT) will be taking place in Missoula and features top riders from around the country.

For the first time in 2015, Missoula will host the Tour of Montana from July 16-19. The four-day professional cycling event features “an invitational Team Time Trial, One-Day Road Race, and a full day of amateur/category/junior and professional criterium races,” described Grendahl. “The Tour of Montana provides men and women professionals with an equal playing field guaranteeing and equal purse prize, equal sponsored media coverage, and the opportunity to race on the same challenging courses.”

With its location in Western Montana (45 miles from Idaho border) at the convergence of five mountain ranges, Missoula offers excellent downhill and cross-country skiing in the winter. The city is

Besides the well-known Missoula Marathon, trail running and racing draws many runners to the Missoula area each year. Runners snake their way up the “M-trail” on Mount Sentinel which gains nearly 2000 vertical feet in just 2.25 miles.

at approximately 3200 feet above sea level and receives an average snowfall of almost 40 inches.

In addition to the outdoor adventures found in and around Missoula, the cultural scene is not lacking either.

“We have a great music festival at the end of the summer (The River City Roots Festival), local breweries and distilleries, great food, a vibrant downtown and the ever-popular Saturday morning Farmers Markets, which includes local coffee roasters, bakeries, fresh-grown produce and home-made crafts from local artisans,” said Brooker.

University of Montana in Missoula also hosts a wide range of events from Division 1 sporting events and other cultural and educational events.

Downtown Caras Park draws visitors and residents for festivals such as the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival (February), International Wildlife Film Festival (April 18-25 at Roxy Theatre), Garden City Brewfest (May 2, 2015) and many more throughout the year.

One Day, One Van, One Race The One-Day Relay Goes Mainstream SCOTT LOMMERS

All relays are fantastic - let’s be clear on that. The camaraderie, the shared moments, the brutal suffering with teammates, the divine success with teammates – the memories forged in relays are unforgettable. In a solo race, circumstances can also provide memories, no doubt, but those memories are individual and isolated. Those are personal highlights and often difficult to explain to others. Relay memories beg to be shared, reminisced, and laughed about – often over a beer or two.

That said, not all relays are the same. For example, the first half of overnight relays are pretty fun, while the second half are a sketchy concoction of dried sweat, overused porta-potties and sorrow. Ok, that’s a bit of hyperbole. Or maybe not. Still, most participants of overnight relays will admit that the most vivid memories are shared aches, anguishes and agonies. After all, how can an athlete persevere and celebrate the thrill of victory without the struggle and the agony of defeat?

But what if an overnight race excised the more painful aspects of the race? What if the relay was softened just a touch? Picture a relay, buffed and shined, with the edges smoothed. That’s the new craze sweeping the nation: the One-Day Relay. Take an overnight relay and chop it in half – now you’ve got a one-day relay. The basics: one day, one van, six runners and twelve running legs. The one-day relay starts in the morning and finishes in the afternoon. It travels 50-80 miles. Sound interesting? Let’s look more closely.

Eight Ways a One-Day Relay Fits Your Style Teammates The first big change is in the number of teammates. The one-day relay normally halves the teams to six runners. This is actually a massive change, as it allows the team to squeeze into one van at all times. Think back to your last overnight relay. Now picture your six teammates in the other van. Nice people. Probably. You may not know because most teams actually see their teammates from the other van exactly twice, at the start and at the finish. If you speak to a teammate from the other van during a race, it’s a rarity. Another sad truth for many adults – you may not even have 11 friends that run! There’s a reason that many overnight relay teams are scrambling for a replacement runner or two at the last second: it’s just difficult to get 12 people together over a weekend. Six is a more easily manageable number.

Van Not everyone owns a van. Having to round up two vans for a weekend usually involves something along these lines: “Hey, can we borrow your minivan with the three child-seats permanently installed and let someone you’ve never met drive it for 24 hours straight on no sleep with five other sweaty, disgusting, energy-gel stained runners that smell like bananas and regret?” Sure, the oneday relay still requires one van, but one is better than two, right?

Not to mention, the one-day relay course is usually half as long, saving on gas, directions, and stress.

Sleep Maybe you’re still young. Maybe you can stay awake for 24 hours straight, catching 15 minute catnaps here and there. Not all of us are like that. Some of us relay runners are just straight-up old. Go ahead – raise your hand up high with me. That sleeping bag on the hard ground of some park at 2:00am looks about as comfortable as an appointment with an IRS agent. This may be the single biggest selling point of the one-day relay. Who doesn’t love sleeping in their own bed? It’s wonderful. It’s fantastic. It’s just a beautiful thing!

Scott Douglass, Executive Race Director of the Bend Beer Chase, a one-day relay, as well as the Cascade Lakes Relay and Spokane to Sandpoint Relay, both overnight relays, agrees on this point.

“One-day relays are simply easier to participate from a logistical, physical, and time-commitment standpoint,” said Douglass. “Less time off from work, fewer miles, and more sleep certainly has its advantages. One-day relays offer many of the same popular features of an overnight relay, but you still get to sleep in your own bed that night and decrease the time to recover since you aren’t staying awake for 24-36 hours straight.”

The striking popularity of the overnight relay is hardly by accident. It’s an exciting, meaningful event with decades of tradition. “Hands down, the overnight relay is still the most popular, as there is something magical that happens while running at 3am

Running in the Dark It’s just creepy. Hey, if your running leg happens to pass through a city in the middle of the night, good for you. But if you’re stuck in the deep dark in those forlorn hours of the morning, well, it’s an experience. While most runners have never actually had a pack of wolves tracking them down a lonely road, it’s not really that difficult for a tired runner’s brain to imagine it. Let’s just say your pace may improve on pitch-black overnight legs, if not your mental well-being.

Shorter Rest Breaks This is probably personal preference, but long rest periods, sitting in a cramped van in between running legs, can be detrimental to performance. Waiting for just five other runners to finish their legs instead of eleven also gives runners less time to hit that minimart for corn dogs and fluorescent-colored energy drinks. That’s a good thing. Plus, it’s possible to run the one-day relay in one outfit.

The less said about changing clothes in porta-potties, the better.

Managing Your Team Herding cats. That’s about the best description for trying to lead a 12-person relay team. Adults don’t take instruction that well in the first place. Cutting the team in half and keeping them all in one van makes it much easier for the leader/dictator to keep everyone together and on task.

Time Overnight relays are usually longer than two days. Travel and the need to get teammates from different locales together before the race – then the need to get teammates together after the race to party – can easily stretch the overnight race to 3-4 days. Athletes with jobs and families can find it difficult to even schedule an overnight race. One-day relays require much less time away from home.

Party!

One-day relays start in the morning and end that same afternoon or early evening, leaving plenty of time for the after-party. You know, the after-race party, otherwise known as “the single reason I just ran all day.” By the end of an overnight relay, many participants are thinking sleep as much as party. “Another advantage to a one-day
