Welcome to a new Rotary Year 2022-2023!

The past Rotary Year was a roller-coaster year for Rotaract Club of Changebringers. Despite being chartered only last March 3, 2022, our club was included in the top performing Rotaract Clubs in District 3830. We were able to spearhead and implement service projects that made an impact in the communities we’re serving. Truly, we were able to Serve to Change Lives.

This Rotary year will be an exciting one for our community. We’ll experience the full implementation of Elevate Rotaract. This means that Rotaractors worldwide will now be elevated to a membership type and will be paying their Annual Membership Dues to Rotary International and other salient and relevant changes. Also, this year’s Presidential Theme — Imagine Rotary— urges all Rotarians to “dream big and take action”, uniting to work toward positive global change. RI President Jennifer Jones said, “We all have dreams, but acting on them is a choice. Imagine a world that deserves our best, where we get up each day knowing that we can make a difference.”

LEARN, ACT, IMAGINE

Aside from our Club’s Motto, “Be The Change”, this year, we became more imaginative by coming up with our call to action, “Learn, act, imagine” it’s a verse from our club song, “Learn from yesterday, act today and imagine tomorrow.” We aim to move forward as an organization taking with us the lessons we learned from the past Rotary Year and use these learnings as we act and implement our service projects this year and imagine more impactful service projects in the future. I believe that while it is important to look at the realities and practicalities of the world, it is imperative for us to think outside of the box solutions and innovations in addressing pressing problems that our society is experiencing. Together with our sponsoring club, RC Makati Dasmarinas headed by MIP Michael Abcede and Youth Service Director and Adviser, Nancy Sandevi, our service partners and benefactors, we would like to share with you the first volume of the RCMD Youthclubs’ Newsletter. Join us as we embark on this exciting journey in Rotary. Let’s Grow Rotary!

BOYZ TO MEN

July 15 and 29, 2022

Circumcision has long been an obligatory and a practice in the Philippines. This procedure is done through the removal of the foreskin or prepuce of the glans penis and is often conducted between the ages of infancy and adolescence. In order to enhance the health and well-being of our target communities, the Rotary Club of Makati Dasmariñas began a project years ago, entitled Boyz To Men in which they offer mass circumcision sessions as a charitable venture.

To kick-start the new Rotary Year, our club spearheaded the implementation of Boyz To Men on July 15, 2022 at Sitio Halang, Cainta, Rizal, in cooperation with Cainta LGU, Cainta Municipal Hospital and Halang Warriors. our partners in service, Rotary Club of Makati Dasmariñas, Rotary Satellite Club of Makati Dasmariñas Erudite, Rotaract Club of Arellano University College of Nursing and HELP Pilipinas. We were able to perform circumcision to 85 boys who passed the screening and provide health education on wound care and home medications to the beneficiaries.

4

On July 29, 2022, another session of Boyz To Men was launched in Balanti, Brgy. San Isidro, Cainta, Rizal. Along with our partners – Cainta Municipal Hospital, Brgy, San Isidro, Balanti Warriors, One Cainta LGU, RCMD, Satellite Club of Makati Dasmarias Erudite, and Rotaract Club of AU College of Nursing and the generosity of our sponsors (Mayor Elen Nieto, Mun. Admin. Atty. Kit Nieto and Belmont Agri. Corp.), we were capable of successfully circumcising 114 qualified young boys. This was the largest number of Free Mass Circumcision recipients that we were able to cover in a single day.

Throughout our sessions, children and their parents have lined up and waited patiently, eager to receive the free “tuli” and avoid paying the high expense of circumcision. This would not only benefit the penile health of the beneficiaries, but it also improves hygiene and lowers the risks in both urinary tract infections (UTIs) and sexually transmissible viral infections. We may honestly say that this legacy project has evolved over time and has had a positive influence on the lives of many young boys. Together, let’s imagine a world where promoting good personal hygiene is a priority.

PROJECT ADAL

(Aiding Disadvantaged Children Access to Learning)

July 15 and 29, 2022

Access to education has long been a worldwide issue. It was aggravated further by the COVID-19 pandemic, which drove over 90% of all kids, or approximately 1.6 billion people, to miss school. It also put many underrepresented students at a disadvantage by excluding them from distant learning possibilities.

As the students have been returning to classes for S.Y. 20222023, parents and guardians has been busy preparing and shopping for their children’s school supplies. In this back-toschool time of the year, donations are offered or requested to assist children in need. Accordingly, the Rotaract Club of Changebringers set out, together with Learning And Progress In Society (LAPIS), a Non-profit Organization based ni Camarines Sur, implemented Project ADAL (Aiding Disadvantaged children Access to Learning), which is under the Rotary International’s Area of Focus, Basic Education and Literacy. Adal originates from a local dialect and means “to study or learn,” and it is aligned with our objectives of providing elementary school pupils with the school materials they need to succeed and learn in school while saving their families money on school supplies.

7
John Lester Cal Lip-Ac Integrated School and Taytay Elementary School Goa, Camarines Sur

On August 22, 2022, we launched this initiative in Lip-Ac Integrated School and Taytay Elementary School in Goa, Camarines Sur, to coincide with the start of classes in the Philippines and to complement Brigada Eskwela 2022. We were able to provide school materials to 640 pupils from kindergarten to Grade 6 and provide bags and toys from our Swedish sponsors via our Club Advisor, Nancy Sandevi. In addition, the 83rd Infantry “Matikas” Battalion held an information drive for parents of Taytay Elementary School students about the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program, or Oplan Balik Loob, to educate them about the benefits of ending local communist armed conflict in the community, which is related to Rotary’s Area of Focus, Peace and Conflict Resolution.

GABAY SA DUGONG ALAY, DUGTONG BUHAY

August 20, 2022

Receiving the gift of blood can make the difference between life and death for those in need. Collaboration among physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals is essential for continuing to encourage blood donation and educate people about the benefits of blood donation and transfusion. As a community organization made up of alumni nurses, junior students and young professionals, the RC Makati Dasmariñas Youthclubs (RAC AUCN and RAC Changebringers) also initiates Quarterly Mass Blood Donation Drives.

On August 20, 2022, the 2nd Quarter Blood Drive “Gabay sa Dugong Alay” a Joint Initiative of OneCainta LGU, Cainta Municipal Hospital, Red Cross Rizal Chapter and Rotaract Club of Changebringers was conducted. In cooperation with Rotary Club of Makati Dasmariñas, Rotary Satellite Club of Makati Dasmariñas Erudite, and Rotaract Club of Arellano University College of Nursing, we’re able to successfully implement our 2nd Quarter Blood Donation Drive at Cainta People’s Center. In total we were able to deliver 114 blood packs that could help 456 patients who needs blood!

BLOOD LETTING: CAMPAIGN ANIMATED VIDEO

In connection with the Quarterly Bloodletting, the RCMD Youth Clubs’ Gabay sa Dugong Alay Video Animation project was also launched. This 3-minute animated video attempts to raise public awareness about the advantages and significance of blood donation by demonstrating the procedure before, during, and after donating blood. This animated film will be shown on digital platforms, in hospital lounges and lobbies, as well as in corporate and residential buildings, to guarantee maximum exposure and reach, boost the number of donors, and help save more lives.

These initiatives allow us to reach out to more people and encourage voluntary blood donation in order to ensure an adequate supply of safe blood and help people in urgent need of blood transfusions, as well as to raise public awareness that blood donation is a humanitarian act. Together, let’s imagine a world of brave heroes who are willing to make a difference in the lives of individuals who might need lifesaving blood products.

HEALTHY SMILES

July 15, 2022

Dental health is an important — yet often overlooked — component of overall wellness. According to the 2018 National Oral Health Survey, 72% of Filipinos have dental caries, and 50% have gum disease. The risks of not brushing our teeth extend beyond gum disease and bad breath; it may have an impact on our social and psychological well-being. Children, in particular, are more vulnerable to the issues caused by poor oral health, as the implications can last into adulthood. The dental health of Filipino children is concerning. According to a study on the oral health condition of Philippine public elementary school kids, 97.1% of sixyear-old children suffer tooth decay.

To complement our campaign on promoting oral health with the thrusts of PDA and guidelines of RI District 3830’s key messages on Oral Health and IPDG Joji Tan’s Call to Action, the Rotaract Club of Changebringers launched HEALTHY SMILES PROJECT. One of our objectives is to raise community awareness about the significance of oral health and improve selfresponsibility by promoting healthy, life-long oral health habits. Also, the team has designed an animated video that covers all of the information required to accomplish our objectives. Moreover, flash drives containing instructional videos will be distributed

to different schools and rural health units, as well as dental care kits to kids aged 5 to 12.

On July 15, 2022, the Healthy Smiles Project was launched in Halang Elementary School, San Isidro, Cainta, Rizal together with the implementation of Boyz To Men. 120 young boys, 132 adult guardians and 20 Community Workers benefited from the Oral Health Awareness Education, with the help of our sponsors SMILE Pilipinas Development Foundation and HELP Pilipinas, our partners in service, Rotary Club of Makati Dasmariñas, Rotary Satellite Club of Makati Dasmariñas Erudite, Rotaract Club of Arellano University College of Nursing. Moreover, 130 Care Kits (alcohol, wet wipes, facemasks, vitamin c) were distributed.

This project would help in engaging more people and spreading oral health awareness, highlighting the need of caring for our teeth and gums as an investment in our overall wellbeing. Together, let’s imagine a world where promoting proper oral health is everyone’s responsibility.

PROJECT SARI-SARING SINING “SAYAW”

Scholarship Grant - May 7, 2022

Folk dances, folk music, folk art, and folk stories are all significant, in keeping distinct cultures alive as the world progresses on all aspects. It helps to preserve people’s cultural cohesion and keeps their culture alive by handing it down to future generations. It is a way to obtain a better understanding and comprehensive knowledge of our culture and customs, especially because the history and origins are all mirrored in the various folk dances performed individually in each region of the country.

In connection with this, Project Sari-Saring Sining has been launched with the purpose of assisting in the organization of youth creative groups in order for them to highlight important issues in society. SariSaring Sining has the opportunity to speak a language which is not only the language of dance, but any form of creative arts that brings different sides together and highlight problems in the society, to make people aware of those problems and to offer solutions. One of the most important things is to develop the young generation’s awareness and interest in dances and to encourage them to learn and appreciate such activities. The art will live on through our new generation of dancers.

On May 7, 2022, the Project Sari-Saring Sining has officially started focusing on “Sayaw” - a Folk Dance Heritage, during the Thanksgiving Charity Dinner hosted by the youth clubs of RC Makati Dasmariñas, where there was different programs held in one night.Specifically, a folk dance was performed by Mrs. Ditas Roxas & Mrs. Nancy Sandevi of University

of the East Dance Troupe, and present also is Mr. Gener Caringal who is the Dance Director of UE Dance Troupe. Accordingly, it was announced that a Full Scholarship will be given to 2 Students of University of the East who are currently a member of the UE Dance Troupe. With the help of the generous anonymous sponsor, the Scholarship Grant was awarded to the Committee Head of UE Dance Troupe, for them to choose 2 members that will receive the scholarship.

In line with this, on August 17, 2022, 2 chosen members have officially been given the Full Scholarship for four years until they graduate, with their allowance included. The chosen scholars are Kyla Mae L. Bernabe and John Daniel R. Avisado, who are currently first year students of University of the East and also

members of UE Dance Troupe. Congratulations to these excellent students and may this scholarship help them with their journey on fulfilling their dreams. May they also continue their passion and help promote the Philippine Folk Dance in the communities in the future.

We appreciate our culture because we feel it is one of the characteristics that most defines us as Filipinos who value and enthusiastically embrace our country’s customs and traditions. To honor and remember why traditions started, let us support and encourage our youth to continue to embrace this creative culture of the Filipinos. Together, let’s imagine a world where art will live on through our new generation of dancers.

Many thanks to our Rotaractors for their support, help and guidance while we have been working on our first Newsletter together. It has been a wonderful experience to work with each and every one of you.

One of the most pressing issues facing youth-serving organisations such as our club, is how to best support youth in becoming productive and contributing individuals of society.

The Rotary clubs provide the opportunity for the youth to explore their leadership skills and expose these diverse individuals, nationally and internationally, who are also representing different backgrounds. Combining “learning by doing process” has been an effective tool for us in teaching leadership. They are also given opportunities to learn from those around them, us Rotarians, serve as their Role models. Seeing leadership in action is another way of learning.

There’s a broad context and definitions of development of youth leadership. The critical elements include: youth/adult partnerships; granting young people decision making power and responsibility for consequences; and recognition of young people’s experience; knowledge and skills. We have found our special mix of elements with a focus on learning by doing. For the future, we hope we will be able to keep our momentum and stay successful as we develop more and more youth leaders.
