AN OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK ABOUT POLIOMYELITIS

The fight against polio has been a long and difficult one, but it is a fight that we can win.

MVV HEALTH CARAVAN IN CEBU

The MVV Health Caravan was held in Kasambagan, Cebu City, and provided free medical and surgical services to the community.

MY ROTARACTOR TO ROTARIAN JOURNEY

My dedication and service did not go unnoticed, and I was elected as one of the Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of Makati Dasmariñas.

ELEVATING MY SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY THROUGH ROTARACT

As a new Rotaractor and one of the founders of LAPIS Organization, my experience has been nothing short of exhilarating.

I think about what Nassim Nicholas Taleb writes in his book “The Black Swan, the impact of the highly improbable” when I think about the times we live in.

These are the times of the highly improbable; or who would have foreseen the Covid - 19 crisis and the present cost increases for food, electricity, fuel and other necessities that we all face in everyday life?

Rotary is because of these crisis more relevant and important than ever, as it brings together people with empathy, compassion and a willingness to make a change for a better life for others.

Our Rotaractors embody this spirit, and through projects and activities they develop valuable leadership skills that makes a difference today and in the future.

You can read about inspiring activities such as the End of Polio Hackathon, the MVV Health Caravan in Cebu, the Moving with Lightness session on good posture, the 11th Rotaract Convention and the Kick it Off Project from the months from November 2022 to February 2023. In addition, MVP Vince Gutierrez and Rtr Eduard Cama Jr. has shared their experiences from life with Rotary and the Rotaract world.

AN OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK ABOUT POLIOMYELITIS

The fight against polio has been a long and difficult one, but it is a fight that we can win. As a resource speaker for the End Polio Hackathon last January 28, 2023 at the Theater Room of Museo ng Muntilupa, Muntinlupa City, I had the opportunity to share my knowledge and experience with young leaders from various organizations. I was excited to see the enthusiasm and dedication that these young people brought to the table, and I was confident that together, we could come up with innovative and impactful project proposals that would help us in our mission to end polio once and for all. Polio, also known as poliomyelitis, is a highly infectious disease caused by the poliovirus. It primarily affects children under the age of five, and can lead to paralysis or even death in some cases.

Polio is transmitted through contaminated food and water, and can spread rapidly in communities with poor sanitation and hygiene practices.

The fight against polio began in the 1950s with the development of the polio vaccine, which has been highly effective in preventing the spread of the disease. Thanks to the efforts of organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO), the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), and Rotary International, we have made great progress in reducing the number of polio cases worldwide.

However, despite these efforts, polio remains a significant public health threat in some parts of the world.

ses of urring in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The COVID19 pandemic has also presented new challenges to the fight against polio, with disruptions to immunization campaigns and decreased funding for polio eradication efforts.

As a resource speaker for the End Polio Hackathon, my goal was to provide young leaders with the knowledge and tools they need to help us overcome these challenges and continue making progress in the fight against polio. I began my presentation by discussing the background and history of polio, including its causes and how it spreads.

I then went on to talk about the signs and symptoms of polio, which can include fever, headache, and muscle weakness or paralysis. While there is no cure for polio, there are treatments available to help manage the symptoms and prevent complications.

Prevention is key when it comes to polio, and I spent a significant amount of time discussing the various prevention methods that are available. The most effective way to prevent polio is through vaccination, and I stressed the importance of ensuring that all children receive the recommended doses of the polio vaccine.

I also talked about the importance of good hygiene and sanitation practices in preventing the spread of polio. This includes practices such as washing hands regularly, using clean water for drinking and cooking, and disposing of waste properly.

Throughout my presentation, I emphasized the role that young leaders can play in the fight against polio. I encouraged them to think creatively and come up with innovative project proposals that would help us in our mission to end polio once and for all. I also talked about the importance of collaboration and working together to achieve our goals.

The End Polio Hackathon was a great success, with young leaders from various organizations coming together to learn, share ideas, and work towards a common goal. I was impressed by the creativity and passion that these young people brought to the table, and I am confident that together, we can continue making progress in the fight against polio.

MVV HEALTH

CARAVAN IN CEBU

Last November 19, 2022, I and Dir. Loraine Mariano had the privilege of participating in the MVV Health Caravan in Cebu City, headed by MIP Michael Abcede of the Rotary Club of Makati Dasmariñas and AG Mary Christine Chua of the Rotary Club of Banilad Metro, in partnership with Rotary District 3830 and 3860 Rotary Clubs, headed by DG Midred Vitangcol and DG Lilu Alino. It was an incredible experience to be part of this lifechanging event and to witness the incredible work being done by the Rotary Clubs and its partners.

The MVV Health Caravan was held in Kasambagan, Cebu City, and provided free medical and surgical services to the community. The event was a huge success, with a total of 890 beneficiaries availing of the services we offered. These included medical consultations, laboratory exams, dental services, surgical procedures, and medication.

The beneficiaries of the MVV Health Caravan came from different backgrounds and ages. We saw children, adults, and elderly people who were in need of medical attention

News
Page 07

It was heartwarming to see the Rotary Club's commitment to service and their dedication to improving the lives of others.

The medical team that participated in the event was composed of dedicated and skilled medical professionals who worked tirelessly to provide the best possible care to the beneficiaries. They were assisted by a team of volunteers who helped with the logistics, registration, and other aspects of the event. The team was well-organized and efficient, ensuring that each beneficiary received the attention and care they needed.

One of the most memorable moments of the event was when an elderly came with her old and worn out eyeglasses. She said that it has been years since she had the chance to have her eyes checked and have her eyeglasses changed base on measured visual acuity grade.

Another beneficiary that left a deep impression on me was a young man who had been suffering from a severe dental condition. He had been unable to afford the treatment he needed and had been living with the pain for years. When he came to us, we saw that his condition was severe and required immediate attention. We provided him with the dental care he needed, and he left the event with a smile on his face, relieved of the pain he had been experiencing for so long.

The MVV Health Caravan was an incredible experience that demonstrated the power of community and collaboration. The event was made possible by the Rotary Club and its partners, who worked together to bring medical care and treatment to those who needed it most.

It was heartwarming to see the Rotary Club's commitment to service and their dedication to improving the lives of others.

The MVV Health Caravan was a lifechanging event that had a significant impact on the beneficiaries who availed of the services. It was an honor to be part of this event that demonstrated that when people come together and work towards a common goal, incredible things can be achieved.

MY ROTARACTOR TO ROTARIAN JOURNEY

It all started in Rotary Year 2008-2009, when I was elected as the President of the Rotaract Club of Arellano University. I was full of excitement and enthusiasm, eager to make a positive impact in my community. It was my first leadership role, and I knew it wouldn't be easy, but I was determined to succeed.

As the President of the Rotaract Club of Arellano University, our club organized various service projects, including medical missions, feeding programs, and educational seminars. We worked closely with our fellow Rotaractors and mentors from the Rotary Club of Makati Dasmariñas, who provided us with guidance and support every step of the way.

Through their mentorship, I learned the importance of service above self and the value of Rotary's four-way test. I was inspired by the work of the Rotary Club of Makati Dasmariñas, and I knew that one day, I wanted to become a member.

After my term as President of the Rotaract Club of Arellano University ended, I remained active in the club and continued to serve our community. I also pursued my studies and started a successful career, but Rotary was always at the back of my mind.

In Rotary Year 2021-2022, I was finally ready to take the next step and become a member of the Rotary Club of Makati Dasmariñas. However, I wanted to do more than just become a member – I wanted to lead a new generation of Rotaractors and inspire them to make a difference.

Page 09

With the help of my fellow Rotaractors and mentors and through the Elevate Rotaract initiative, our advisor, Nancy Sandevi and I founded the Rotaract Club of Changebringers. I became its Charter President and worked tirelessly to establish it as a strong and active club

As the Charter President of the Rotaract Club of Changebringers, we organized various service projects, including disaster relief operations, environmental campaigns, and youth development programs We also helped our fellow Rotaractors develop their leadership skills and become better community servants.

Our hard work paid off, and the Rotaract Club of Changebringers quickly gained recognition for its dedication to service and excellence in leadership I was proud of what our team had accomplished, but I knew that there was still more work to be done

In Rotary Year 2022-2023, I continued my term as President of the Rotaract Club of Changebringers I continued to lead the club with the same passion and commitment that I had shown in the previous year

Under my leadership, the Rotaract Club of Changebringers expanded its reach and impact. We organized joint service projects with other Rotaract clubs and worked closely with our mother club, the Rotary Club of Makati Dasmariñas, to advance Rotary's goals

My dedication and service did not go unnoticed, and I was elected as one of the Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of Makati Dasmariñas It was a great honor for me, and I knew that it was a testament to the hard work and dedication that you had put into Rotary over the years.

Page 10 Hiraya

As the Incoming Secretary of the Rotary Club of Makati Dasmariñas, I have been entrusted with a critical role in shaping the direction of the club and creating hope in the world

Creating hope in the world is not an easy task, but it is a noble and worthwhile one It requires dedication, hard work, and a willingness to embrace change As I embark on this journey, I will keep in mind that every action I take, no matter how small, has the potential to make a significant difference

Finally,I will always remember that creating hope in the world is a long-term endeavor It requires patience, perseverance, and a willingness to learn and adapt I will stay committed to our shared mission, and I will not be afraid to take risks and try new things. With hard work and dedication, we can make a positive impact in the world and create a brighter future for all

Last November 20, 2022, the Rotary Club of Makati Dasmariñas, together with its partner organizations, Rotary Club of Makati Dasmariñas Erudite, Rotaract Club of Arellano University, and Rotaract Club of Changebringers, United Pinoy Alliance Combat, organized the Kick it Off Project. The project aimed to empower 45 out-ofschool youth and children with special needs through a self-defense workshop using the basics of Muay Thai The event was held in Palanyag, Parañaque City, and was facilitated by Kru John Balmes and Rtn Adrian Cayabyab from UPAC.

KICK IT OFF PROJECT EMPOWERS OUT-OF-SCHOOL YOUTH AND CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS THROUGH MUAY THAI

The Kick it Off Project was a response to the growing number of out-of-school youth and children with special needs who are vulnerable to physical and emotional abuse. According to a report by the Philippine Statistics Authority, the number of out-of-school children and youth in the country has increased from 1.2 million in 2017 to 2.9 million in 2021 At the same time, the number of children with special needs who experience abuse and neglect has also increaseThe project used Muay Thai, a combat sport that originated from Thailand, as a tool for empowering the participants. Muay Thai not only teaches selfdefense but also promotes discipline, selfconfidence, and respect for others Through the workshop, the participants learned the basic techniques of Muay Thai, such as punches, kicks, and knee strikes.

They also learned how to apply these techniques in real-life situations.

The event started with the opening remarks of PP Rey Madrid, who inspired the participants with his fun and insightful message. Secretary Kurt Andrei Rosales, Dir. Angelika Guillermo, Dir. Gab Catalan, Rtr. John Rico Gumop-as, and Rtr. Ella Santiago represented the Rotaract Club of Changebringers during the event. The facilitators, Kru John Balmes and Rtn Adrian Cayabyab, provided expert guidance and instruction to the participants, ensuring that they learned the techniques safely and effectively.

The participants, who ranged in age from 10 to 16 years old, came from different backgrounds and experiences. Some were out-of-school youth who had dropped out of school due to poverty or other reasons, while others were children with special needs who needed extra support and care. Despite their differences, they all shared a common goal: to learn how to defend themselves and become more confident and resilient.

The Kick it Off Project was a success, thanks to the collaborative effort of the Rotary Club of Makati Dasmariñas, its partner organizations, sponsors, and the dedicated facilitators. The project not only provided the participants with valuable selfdefense skills but also gave them a sense of empowerment and hope for the future. It served as a reminder that with the right support and guidance, out-of-school youth and children with special needs can overcome their challenges and achieve their dreams.

ELEVATING MY SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY THROUGH ROTARACT

As a new Rotaractor and one of the founders of LAPIS Organization, my experience has been nothing short of exhilarating. Being able to make a difference in the lives of those who need it most has been a privilege and an honor.

LAPIS Organization, an NGO based in Camarines Sur, was established in 2008 with the aim of initiating projects that would help students in farflung schools. Our organization has always been committed to the cause of providing education to those who are less fortunate. Over the years, we have initiated various projects such as school feeding programs, literacy drives and donation of school supplies.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic presented new challenges for us. With schools closed and students studying from home, we had to come up with new ways to continue our mission. That's when we decided to organize community pantries filled with vegetables, rice, condiments, and other grocery items.

It wasn't an easy task, especially with the lockdowns in place. But we were determined to help our community in any way we could. We collaborated with local farmers and small businesses to source the items for the pantries. We also partnered with other organizations and volunteers to help us distribute the goods to those who needed them the most.

Being a new Rotaractor, I have had the opportunity to work with like-minded individuals who are equally passionate about making a difference in the world.

Page16

The response we received was overwhelming. People from all walks of life came forward to help us in our mission. We were able to reach out to hundreds of families and provide them with essential items during a time of crisis.

Being a new Rotaractor, I have had the opportunity to work with like-minded individuals who are equally passionate about making a difference in the world. The Rotaract Club of Changebringers, and our mother club the Rotary Club of Makati Dasmariñas, has been a great support system, providing us with the resources and guidance we needed to make our projects a success.

As we move forward, we are determined to continue our mission and help as many people as we can. We believe that education is the key to a better future, and we will continue to work towards providing it to those who need it the most.

My experience as a new Rotaractor and founder of LAPIS Organization has been a fulfilling one. I have learned that with determination and the support of the community, we can make a real difference in the lives of others. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve my community and look forward to continuing our mission.

MOVING WITH LIGHTNESS

Are you exhausted? Do you want to improve your posture? Would you like a comfortable yet upright posture and beautiful and graceful coordination? Good thing we learned why good posture matters and how we can improve it Last January 25, 2023, RC Makati Dasmariñas Health Service Committee, in partnership with the Rotary Satellite Club of Makati Dasmariñas ERUDITE and Rotaract Club of Changebringers, conducted a session about good posture with less strain in our bodies Dr Benedict Valdecañas, an Orthopedic Sports Specialist, facilitated it Our guest speakers are Mr Alvin Mesa, a Physio Specialist Ms Marlan Manguba, a Philanthropist, and Mrs. World Philippines 2014 finalist held at Aegle Wellness Center Alphaland Makati Place

A good, natural posture tends to project poise, confidence, integrity, and dignity Good posture involves maintaining the standard shape of the spine Maintaining the natural forward arch in your lower back is also essential To test for the arch in your lumbar area, Mrs Marlan demonstrated to us the following steps:

1 From a standing position, slowly back up (don't lean) against a wall until your head, shoulder blades, and buttocks touch the wall Having your head, ribcage and pelvis aligned in this neutral position brings your spine toward its standard shape

In this session, we carry a simple message that your posture directly affects your body's overall functioning and significantly interprets how you think and feel. Poor posture can also affect the functioning of your vital organs and can cause health problems Many patients with chronic pain can trace their problems due to poor posture habits

Did you know that good posture positions the body correctly and ensures your weight is evenly balanced? When we are not in alignment, it puts extra pressure on our spine, which causes strain Good posture ensures your spine has three curves It also keeps the muscles on each side of the spine strong and wellbalanced It will help prevent back pain and make you move freely and be less tired.

2. Place one hand behind you, between your lower back and the wall, just above where your beltline would be If you have the correct arch in the lumbar spine, your hand will slide into the space just above your pelvis and below your shoulder blades

To maintain good posture, we should be mindful throughout the day and avoid staying in one position for an extended period; we should stand and move around every thirty minutes to one hour

According to Mr Mesa, there is no ideal posture your best posture is always your next; we should always be mindful of our body posture because it is one of our body languages, and always keep our posture awareness and do our exercise regularly
