COURSE GUIDE COURSES FOR ADULTS WITH LEARNING DIFFICULTIES AND/OR DISABILITIES

TRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGH LEARNING Whether you are an existing student at RHACC or you are a parent/carer assisting an adult with learning difficulties and/or disabilities to gain independence, this guide offers new and exciting courses to help you make the important decisions.

We have an exceptional reputation and a long history of providing stimulating learning opportunities for adults with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. We offer a rich and varied programme, which is well established at our Parkshot campus as well as our Hillcroft campus, based in Surbiton, which includes a residential option. We are delighted to launch our new outreach programmes on behalf of Merton Council which offers courses held in a range of locations in the Merton area.

PRE-VOCATIONAL Our pre-vocational skills aim to prepare our learners for future employment within the sectors of hospitality and catering, retail and service industries, horticulture, administration and creative arts. These job-readiness skills help our students to focus on the tasks at hand, use their time to their benefit, interact with fellow students around the college and follow directions. Our pre-vocational offer includes: • Industry specific skills • Personal skills: • Communication in the workplace • Personal presentation • Punctuality • Teamwork • Health and safety

WELLBEING We understand the importance of our learners looking after their wellbeing. Our wellbeing courses are designed to develop knowledge and understanding within the subject areas of exercise, cookery, horticulture, art and crafts, photography, digital skills, performing arts, and include: • Health and exercise • Nutrition • Keeping safe • Confidence

ENGLISH AND MATHS Developing key skills of English and Maths is important for life and work, so all programmes include English and Maths which are embedded within each subject.

OUR COURSES FULL-TIME COURSES AND SHORT COURSES AT PARKSHOT AND HILLCROFT Full-time courses are two or three days per week.

Other courses run over a day or half a day per week.

HILLCROFT RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMME (PART-TIME)

WHO TO CONTACT

Our part-time residential programme at the Hillcroft campus in Surbiton will provide an opportunity for learners to develop self-confidence and independence skills. Learners will gain experience in a hotel environment, learning skills in food service, housekeeping, and customer service. Learners can also gain extra qualifications to help them to find work in a service industry.

COURSES IN MERTON We work with Merton Adult Learning to provide courses for adults with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.

Our core provision focuses on skills such as cookery, English and Maths, arts and crafts alongside dance and drama. These courses are delivered in a community setting such as public libraries and day centres across the borough of Merton and are open to all ages above 19 and of all ability levels from anywhere within the Greater London Authority.

MEET SOME OF OUR TEAM We have a friendly, dedicated team that are specially trained in supporting those with a wide range of challenges to their learning.

Our team comprises of experienced Programme Managers, Tutors, and Specialist Learning Support Coordinators.

THERESA MAY Programme Manager I have taught a range of courses including cookery, independent life skills, English, sport and line dancing. I manage the team of Learning Support Workers who support learners to plan inspiring and creative courses as well as achieve their individual goals.

SANDRA PAISLEY Learning Support Worker I have worked at RHACC for approximately 20 years in a variety of courses and my current role is assisting adults with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.

CAROLINE O’NEIL Learning Support Worker I have supported a wide variety of students and classes over the years at RHACC in mainstream and up to GCSE level. My latest role in the Supported Learning department and my experience has taught me to bring out the best in students that I work with.

MAX MASLEN Learning Support Worker I enjoy seeing the students grow in confidence and independence as they progress through their courses. Staff have created an environment where they’re encouraged to be the best version of themselves.

OLWEN GEEN Tutor My background is painting, sculpture and glass. I have taught mainstream stained glass and mosaics. I did this for several years at South Thames College, Hammersmith and Fulham Adult Ed and RHACC. However, for over 13 years I have solely taught art to adults with learning disabilities and/ or difficulties at RHACC.

CAROLINE STANFIELD Learning Support Worker I worked for 30 years as an Occupational Therapist and started work at RHACC a year ago. My experience has been great!

BETH MARTIN Learning Support Worker Besides being a Support Worker I also volunteer for Richmond Borough Mind where I visit schools and colleges to present workshops on mental health and the importance of wellbeing. My role here has given me a lot of insight and I enjoy being around the learners and the RHACC team.

SONALI BHARGAVA Tutor As a Maths Tutor, I enjoy the time I spend with my learners and we share a mutual feeling of trust and respect.

DEAN ALLEN Tutor It gives me joy when I see the Supported Learning students gain confidence from the classes.

RACHEL NICHOLAS Learning Support Worker I have been working at RHACC since September and have supported a large variety of classes which I thoroughly enjoy. I have experience in mentoring and teaching music and theatre related subjects, so I particularly like supporting the performing arts and exercise courses.

CHERYL YOUNG Tutor I really enjoy working with adults with learning difficulties and/§or disabilities at RHACC and have worked in all departments.

KAREN KEEN Tutor I joined RHACC in January 2016 teaching independent living skills. It’s great to see learners in need of additional support succeed in their learning and wellbeing.

SIMON KAY Learning Support Worker I enjoy making a difference to their lives at RHACC and for them to achieve their dreams.

I really enjoy seeing learners develop new skills and grow in confidence as they participate in the learning activities that we offer. I work to ensure that the programme meets the needs of the learners and support the staff to deliver the sessions. I also get the opportunity to work with parents and carer groups to gather their views and opinions to make sure that we are meeting the needs of the adults that they support and care for.
