“The people I met at RHACC are so diverse. Their different expertise inspired me in so many ways and I was able to learn from them. I enrolled on a Calligraphy course for leisure and now I am taking commissions. I also studied Graphic Design which helped me produce my branding. My tutors have been energetic, helpful and encouraging through my RHACC journey. I highly recommend the college for someone who is looking for a subject to be passionate about.”

Francis Bowyer PPRWS, NEAC Painting Tutor, past member of President of the Royal Watercolour Society and New English Art Club

“Coming from an art background drawing has always come quite naturally to me. I’ve taught at RHACC since forever, mainly one evening a week. Adult education is hard to find these days and RHACC students are always passionate about art and that makes me happy. My advice to anyone who is starting an Art course is just put in the effort and have the desire to create and embrace it.”

NEW EQUIPMENT AT RICHMOND ART SCHOOL We are delighted to continue our investment in facilities and equipment in the Art School. Our ceramics room has boosted its stock of potter’s wheels to a grand total of fourteen. We now provide high specification professional units, with built-in seats for comfortable creativity. We’ve reintroduced etching to our printmaking studio and have a fume cabinet, to enable our students to produce copper printing plates. We also have a professional grade laser cutting machine.

Lisa

Former CELTA learner, now RHACC tutor

“I chose to study the CELTA at Richmond as I wanted to retrain. I’d recommend RHACC because of the way the course is set up. Most CELTA courses are run intensively for four weeks. I’ve had many friends who have done it this way and they said it was really tough and exhausting. Most importantly they said everything was rushed. The CELTA course at RHACC is run once a week over five months. This allows you time to reflect on your learning and teaching and to plan your studies to fit around your commitments. For me, this worked really well.” Face-to-Face Networking Made Easy (1)Fri: 09:30-12:30

ONLINE A LEVEL MATHS THROUGH THE NATIONAL EXTENSION COLLEGE Maths is about solving problems, detecting patterns, predicting behaviour and outcomes. It provides a way of understanding and describing the world around us. A Level Maths gives you the tools to study and understand abstract ideas and analytical processes. It is a highly regarded qualification by employers or for entry to higher education. We will screen and interview you for a place on this NEC course. It is recommended that you have a high grade in GCSE Maths or the equivalent. You should be confident in your Maths skills and knowledge and you will need to be able to set aside time to study. The course is flexible, there is no fixed enrolment date, you can enrol when you are ready and the

duration of this course depends on you. However guidance suggests A Level Mathematics takes about 300–360 hours, plus additional time for developing your skills, assignment work you submit to your tutor and summary exercises. You will have tutor support from a qualified A level Maths tutor for a period of up to 24 months from the date of enrolment. Many students allow 18–24 months to complete an A Level, but some people complete the course within a year. Please note there is a fee of £695 payable to the NEC for this course.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Our ESOL courses are for people who have been living here in the UK or the EU for three years and want to stay in the UK. Our courses help you to use English for everyday life where you learn how to communicate with others, improve your skills for work or help your children in school. All our courses look at topics related to living and working in the UK. You will learn Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening so you can work on the skills you need.

ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (EFL) If you are looking for an internationally recognised qualification such as the Cambridge PET, FCE, CAE, CPE or IELTS, an EFL course is the course for you. We also offer general English courses from Elementary to Proficiency.

HOW LONG ARE THE COURSES? Courses run for three terms per year, 10–13 weeks per term, so you can join a class when it suits you and progress at your own pace. You can also join our short courses which run for five to six weeks.

WHERE ARE THE COURSES HELD? Courses are held at our main centres in Parkshot and Hillcroft and also at a range of community venues in Richmond.

HOW DO I ENROL? We start with an Information and Advice session where you will have an assessment and interview so we can decide on the right level for you.

Adiba ESOL

“I enrolled on an ESOL course because I wanted to learn English. I want to converse with others including my doctor so I will never need to rely on a translator. I live here so I want to speak the language to fit in and people can understand me. I like studying at RHACC because everyone is so friendly, the tutors are patient with our learning and I have always felt included and welcome.” ESOL – Reading (Hillcroft) Entry 3 (1)Mon,Tue: 09:30-12:00

“I enrolled on a Basic Skills course and then progressed on to gain some qualifications to better my life. I have been able to do things I didn’t think I could do. Hillcroft is a comfortable, safe place for me, staying here has helped relieve the stress of travelling and studying in peace. I appreciate that the teachers care about us and not just our work.” For more information visit www.rhacc.ac.uk I 49

Award-winning author and former RHACC student, Jess Kidd has been confirmed as the College’s first ever Writer in Residence until 2020. This initiative marks the centenary of the former Hillcroft Women’s College which became part of RHACC in October 2017.

08/05/20 2wks

Hillcroft Women's Education is RHACC’s specialist programme for women which incorporates a unique offer aimed at supporting disadvantaged women back into learning, thereby improving their life opportunities. Jess studied at RHACC for her Access to HE diploma. She went on to complete an MA in Enabling Creative Writing in the Community and a PhD in Creative Writing Studies. Jess said:

“I feel very excited to become the very first Writer in Residence at RHACC. I will be working with groups of women from backgrounds that have not traditionally fostered creative writing, including underrepresented voices, exploring themes such as empowerment through education.” www.rhacc.ac.uk/writer-residence-jess-kidd 52 I Spring – Summer 2020 Course Guide

Josh Foundation Year in Acting

“Richmond Drama School gave me an introduction to the essential skills and knowledge I needed to develop as an actor. The course covers a multitude of methods and approaches, taught by a close team of excellent tutors in an environment that promotes energy and creativity, I was inspired to explore my intuition, while gaining an insight into the demands of the industry. The Foundation Year in Acting exposes you to a ‘Day in the life’ of an actor.” Josh won a scholarship to the Stella Adler drama school in New York as a result of his studies at RHACC.
