THE SOUTH COURSE REOPENS Following a €7 million upgrade, the South Course at Quinta do Lago is reopening this month with masterful upgrades that not only elevate the playing experience of this iconic course, but bring Quinta do Lago to the forefront of environmentally conscious golf. Designed by renowned golf course architect William Mitchell in 1974, back then, the South Course was known simply as Course A, but has always been a crowning jewel of Quinta do Lago. With its original design, Mitchell introduced American-standard greens, tees and bunkers to the Algarve. Soon the course gained a prestigious reputation and became a flagship in the European Tour Course. A favourite among European tour players, the South Course has hosted the Portuguese Open eight times, including Colin Montgomerie’s win in 1989. Having won 24 under par, he finished 11 strokes ahead and broke the world record with a round of 63. It was at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in Europe that Quinta do Lago announced plans for a €7 million golf upgrade, with sustainable renovations to the South Course, modernised Clubhouses and a new fleet of electric golf buggies. “The South Course has played an integral part in the history of the resort and holds a special place in the hearts of so many of our residents and guests,” says Sean Moriarty, Chief Executive of Quinta do Lago. “It is truly an iconic golfing venue and the enhancement programme that we’ve devised will help to ensure that it strengthens its position at the forefront of European golf,” he says. This month, the resurfaced, upgraded South Course reopens with state-of-the-art irrigation and drainage systems, maximised efficiency and a less reliance on the use of non-renewable resources. A planting scheme of native species has also been adopted to increase biodiversity. Q: What sustainable actions are being

This is so important to us here in Quinta do Lago, as we prepare and cook a vast number of healthy dishes in all restaurants to ensure our customers eat healthy whilst enjoying beautiful dishes.
A: As well as using Q Farm for a lot of our fruit and vegetables, we are using local companies, many family businesses to help the local community and this leads to the reduction of our carbon footprint. We are using avocado or rice straws which is better for the environment. We have had excellent results by working with our suppliers in reducing greatly the use of plastic. More and more produce is arriving in eco-friendly packaging.
Q: What’s new in Quinta do Lago’s restaurants? A: UMAMI, our newest restaurant is proving very popular. Chef Diogo and his team are very busy creating beautiful Asian dishes, leading to customers returning time after time. Bovino Steakhouse’s Chef, Dario, has sourced the best quality meat, with his team of chefs, they prepare, cook and present high quality succulent dishes. Casa do Lago is as vibrant as ever. Chef John and his team only using the best fish and seafood available, producing exquisite dishes in a beautiful setting. Chef Alipio at Casa Velha has launched his new menu using only the finest of local ingredients, this is fine dining at the very top level here in Quinta do Lago.
