the extent that education benefits individual students, so goes the argument, then students and their families should bear the cost, through cash payments and student loans. To the extent that education benefits the larger society—projecting educated citizens’ increased civic engagement and their long-term rising economic tide that lifts all boats—then society should share the cost, through government aid and private philanthropy. Two Theatrical PremierEs

at Quincy The Journey

The Presidents Under My Pillow

The Quincy University Theatre Department set aside February 21-24 to recognize Black History Month. Connie Phillips, director of the theater program, wrote The Journey, which features the lives and stories of those who paved opportunity over the rocky roads of racism. The program touched on prominent figures, such as Martin Luther King, Jr., and President Barack Obama, and also brought in a local twist by featuring two Quincy University trailblazers in the quest for racial equality.

In April, the stage production The Presidents Under My Pillow, brought American history to life. Written by Connie Phillips, director of the theater program, with songs by Phillips and Allen Means, director of choirs, this original production involved thirteen Quincy University students along with some very special guests.

George Iles, who was born and raised in Quincy and attended Quincy University, became one of the legendary Tuskegee Airmen, as an airman in the 332nd Fighter Group during World War II. The Tuskegee Airmen were the first aviation unit composed entirely of African-Americans. Father Augustine Tolton, who studied at Quincy University and grew up in the tri-state area, became the first African-American Catholic priest when he was ordained in 1886. Researching, creating, and producing the project involved about forty students. About a dozen students from the Quincy University history department, directed by Dr. Megan Boccardi, and the African-American history class aided in research, while twenty cast members and several crew members backstage were involved in the performance itself. Performances were held in QU’s MacHugh Theatre and at Baldwin Intermediate School where 900 students were in the audience.

8

QUniverse | Summer 2013

Designed with young people in mind, the play interacted with the audience gathered in QU’s MacHugh Theatre. The producers believe that if the children are involved on stage it will not just capture their attention at the performance but will also propel a lasting interest in history. George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Sacagawea were just a few who graced the stage as they presented themselves in a little girl’s dream. This innovative representation of historical figures kept audience members eagerly attentive as they learned about events such as the Boston Tea Party. At one point, the entire theater loudly warned Dolley Madison, “The British are coming!” Volunteers were pulled from the audience to help reenact some of America’s defining events, such as the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, the creation of the Underground Railroad to help slaves escape, and the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Javante Francis ’16 portrayed one of the Tuskegee Airmen in The Journey, presented in February.

The play was made open to members of the area community. Director Connie Phillips (center) worked with Breanne Meyer ’15 and Carl Hodges ’13 during production of The Presidents Under My Pillow.

STUDENT MISSION OUTREACH New Orleans A group from Quincy University set Franciscan principles in action in March 2013 when fifty-one students, faculty, and friars forfeited spring-break festivities to serve others in New Orleans. From washing windows under the supervision of nuns to gardening for troubled youths at a place called Café Hope, these missionaries learned new skills and practiced familiar ones.

The group sampled New Orleans cuisine, enjoying the famous flavors of the region during meals hosted by area businesses and churches. It was during their tour of the city, though, that they tasted a very different side of the South. Eight years after Hurricane Katrina, remnants of the storm are still visible in certain portions of the city. The local stories of ministry and recovery taught the group about service in a true Christ-like spirit.

In the mountain towns of Fon Ferettes and Baraisa, the group gathered with the locals under a blanket of stars on forty-degree nights and knelt beside them in a makeshift worship service. Most of all, as they discussed project funding in meetings with the village’s elders, they came to know the Haitians and to understand a need in a whole new way.

Haiti Through the Quincy University Haiti Connection, five students and their advisor experienced an unforgettable opportunity to live the QU mission of service. Haiti Connection president Matt Meglan ’13 and advisor Abby Wayman, along with Jessica Mott ’13, Kristine Vogt ’14, Maddie Torretta ’14, and Bridget Bicek ’16, journeyed to Haiti during the winter break of 2012. From the left, Kelsey O'Brien ’15, Lauren Bentzinger ’14, Mark Everhar ’14, and Daniel Lee ’15 did some serious gardening in New Orleans over spring break.

As the students spread out to six different sectors of the city, their charity was felt around New Orleans. They created more energy efficient homes for Green Light New Orleans, painted furniture at Rosary Retreat Center and organized storage rooms at the NO AIDS Task Force headquarters. They even rebuilt a food shelter for St. Mary of the Angels Church in the lower Ninth Ward.

The level of poverty in the country became clear upon their arrival, when a group of beggars gathered around the gate of the Matthew 25 House, a parish where the group stayed in Port Au Prince, Haiti’s capital. They knew their job was to make a difference in this poverty-stricken country, and in an effort to do so, the missionaries traveled to several different areas. In the small village of Dekoseye, they visited a clinic maintained by the Religious of Jesus and Mary, which has been supported by the Quincy University Haiti Connection since shortly after the program was implemented in 2003.

Students helped bring fresh water to Haitians. From Left: Bridget Bicek ’16, Kristine Vogt ’14, Matthew Meglan ’13, Abby Wayman ’03, Maddie Torretta ’14, Jessica Mott ’13.

This marks the Quincy University Haiti Connection’s tenth annual trip to Haiti. Not only did this journey unite funds with the needy, but also it united spirits. Whether beside them or miles away, these missionaries will forever walk with the Haitians.

CHRISTENING NEW PERFORMANCE SPACE Over 350 alumni and friends of the Quincy University music program gathered to celebrate the grand opening of the Connie Niemann Center for Music on March 16, 2013. The performance possibilities of the newly renovated hall were elegantly showcased as QU’s Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Band and Choir launched a series of music department concerts. The two chapels at North Campus were joined to create a performance hall and a multipurpose reception area. The stained glass windows of Fr. Thomas More Brown, OFM, who founded the Quincy University art department, remain a focal point and are, in fact, set off better by the new color scheme of the space. This building will host performances and fine arts functions while retaining its spiritual character as home to the Franciscan Retreat Center. QUniverse | Summer 2013

A year after the first public viewing of the building plans in February 2012, a packed house enjoyed an afternoon of music. For the many who were involved in the project, it was a glorious day of gratification. To two audience members, however, there was a much greater significance. Richard Niemann, Sr., and his wife, Connie, along with the Niemann Foods Foundation, provided a million-dollar gift that made this project possible. Connie’s love for music and the couple’s dedication to Quincy University inspired this gift, which is also revitalizing the music department at Quincy University. The Niemanns were delighted by the grand opening concert, and they are sure to be in the audience often.

The Lady Hawks received a bye into the GLVC Tournament quarterfinals in Evansville, Indiana, after earning the No. 4 seed in the tournament under second-year head coach Jeni Garber. Despite losing their tournament opener, the Lady Hawks season can be seen as a huge success. Playing a majority of underclassmen and freshmen and without the advantage of a senior on the team, the Lady Hawks finished with a 12-6 record in conference play, and at one point, won twelve of fourteen games in the heart of their schedule. The Lady Hawks bounced back from some early season adversity, losing six of their first eight games before the calendar flipped to 2013.

The Hawks finished the season with a 10-21 overall record and won five of six matches from February 24 through March 15. The highlight of the season came on Senior Night at Pepsi Arena with the Hawks hosting Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association rival Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. Quincy swept the Mastodons in front of a large Alumni Night crowd, snapping a twenty-one-match losing streak to the Indiana school. Jack Gamache ’16 led the Hawks and was tied for sixth in the MIVA with 307 kills on the season while he and teammate Brian Peth ’14 each finished with a team-high 197 digs, which ranked seventh in the conference. Eight Hawks were named to the MIVA Academic All-Conference team. Hadley Foster finished his seventh season as the head coach of the program.

The Lady Hawks were led in scoring by Lucy Cramsey ’14, who was named to the All-GLVC first team. She and Hannah Weedman ’14 were both chosen to the league’s all-defensive team. Cramsey was also named a Capital One Academic AllDistrict performer, carrying a 3.82 GPA with majors in elementary education and theology. The Hawks completed a successful season, just missing out on the GLVC Championships match play rounds by finishing sixth overall at the tournament held at the Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Indiana. The sixth-place finish marked a five-spot improvement over the 2012 season when they were eleventh at the conference tournament. Quincy was actually third after the first round of play but could not maintain its strong start. Patrick Higgins ’13 finished in a tie for ninth in the conference championships, shooting a 1-under 71 in the final round. Higgins was also awarded the GLVC Council of Presidents’ Academic Excellence Award and was joined by five teammates who were named to the GLVC Academic All-Conference team. The Hawks are under the direction of Kory Niesen.

The Lady Hawks highlighted their season with a win at the Illinois College Mid-Week Invitational in September – the program’s first win under head coach Nick Myers ’09. Cortni Hicks ’16 was the individual medalist at the tournament, firing an 87. For the season, Rachael Brockmeyer ’15 was the team’s low scorer, averaging 90.7 shots per round. She edged out Arisa Thammavongsa ’14, who averaged 90.8, for that title. The Lady Hawks finished thirteenth at the GLVC Championships, held in Waterloo, Illinois. They’re

not quite as distinctive as snowflakes, but the 1,021 Hawk undergrads represent a wide range of talents, interests, backgrounds, and dreams. Just getting to know and collaborate with one another is a rich element of their QU education. That’s a strand of the Franciscan DNA, of course, which values and promotes the flourishing of each individual. These students are also impossible to stereotype, and the opportunities they find on campus enable them to diversify their profiles even more. QU honors students are a case in point. According to Dr. Daniel Strudwick, director of the program, they are 186 strong (growing from 100 in spring 2010 and 26 in 2006), representing every major field and creating a jambalaya of personalities. They are athletes and Greeks, cheerleaders, actors, tutors, and interns. What they have in common is a love of learning and a passion for challenge, raising the game of everyone in the classroom, including their teachers. Also changing the face of campus are the scores of students who engage regularly and intensively in service activities. They, too, bring diverse profiles to their shared commitment to creating a better world, starting right here, right now. For psychology major Jaclyn Mastroianni ‘14, the personal attention available in the honors program is an extension of what attracted her to QU. “I enjoy having smaller classrooms that let me have a one-on-

QUniverse | Summer 2013

one relationship with my professors,” she comments. Mastroianni’s high school schedule was studded with advanced placement classes, and continuing that level of challenge just came naturally. Like her classmates, Mastroianni has a gift for balancing substantial commitments. Named to the National Soccer Coaches Association All-Region team this year, she devotes most of her non-academic time to soccer-related activities. She finds that honors events, including parties to celebrate accomplishments, do wonders to build camaraderie, and advanced projects push students to accomplish more than they previously imagined. “My biggest challenge for honors was setting up a presentation on [my] research,” Mastroianni recalls. “I was very nervous, and trying to find different activities for a class without having them get distracted or bored is very difficult.” Abimbola Osundairo ‘15 is another student athlete who has encountered the challenge that many Quincy University students face while trying to combine academic excellence with sports or other extracurricular activities. “Being able to distribute my time efficiently so that I can be the best student and football player possible has made all the difference. This of course did not come so easily, but with the help of certain faculty members, and the encouragement I received, I have been able to put first things first.

“Not only does time management separate a student athlete from a student uninvolved in sports, it becomes more crucial when the student athlete is in the honors program. Time management becomes a vital tool and asset that one must acquire to succeed. It is definitely not easy; it takes hard work, commitment and persistence.” Predentistry major Drew Miller ’13 found extra inspiration when he was able to incorporate his planned career in dentistry into his Honors projects in biology. “Last year I gave a presentation on how hyperthyroidism leads to tooth defects,” Miller explains, “and this year, I am doing a presentation on a mutation in tooth development.” Miller also maintains a busy schedule beyond the classroom, but making time to help others is a must. “I am a part of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity where we do a lot of service,” he says. “My favorite activity would have to be the wheelchair basketball tournament we host every year for the Center for Independent Living in west central Illinois.” Fellow Delt and honors student Jay Austin ’15 calls his first-year honors project “eye-opening.” Under the guidance of his theology professor, Austin attended services of various Western religions, including Islam, Judaism, and Catholicism. The experience proved to be his favorite in Honors so far. “I could go on for hours about the opportunities afforded to me by the university!” Austin states. “I’m the Student Assistant for the baseball team, an Admissions Ambassador, the co-founder of the First

Year Leadership Experience [FYLE], and an active member within Big Brothers Big Sisters.” Like all honors students, he finds the perks, such as priority registration, to be beneficial, and he knows that his participation will make his résumé stand out. However, he keeps his eyes on the larger prize. “[The purpose of honors] is not to load certain students down with extra work; it is not so that we can wear a special cord when we walk at graduation; and it is absolutely not something meant to heighten our pride,” Austin says. “The purpose of the program is to stretch our intellect, solidify our values, and strengthen our resolve.” First-year student Megan Ward ’17 couldn’t agree more. A Presidential Scholar, Ward expressed her enthusiasm for honors and for her QU experience as a student speaker during this year’s competition. “It made me feel so great just knowing I could relieve a little of their nervousness by providing some advice and a little humor,” she remembers. A pre-med major, Ward is Circle K secretary, a student senate delegate, a member of FYLE, an Impact mentor, a tutor, and a member of the RAP (summer registration) and orientation teams. “I love QU so much and I would never have chosen to go anywhere else,” Ward says. “It has by far been the best decision of my life. I have met so many new friends, learned a lot about myself, and have had some amazing professors, and I’m only a freshman.” One special part of the QU experience that Ward cherishes is the ongoing opportunity to serve others. In 2013, more than fifty student participants logged over 1000 hours of service on the New Orleans mission trip alone, making this spring break project the most ambitious ever undertaken. Although this particular trip was singularly inspiring, those who took part were not newcomers to service—nor to a full slate of campus activities. Nontraditional student Greg Carter ’15 agrees that “few other things that I have done in my life have left me as satisfied that I did something right as my service hours in New Orleans.” Carter, who aspires to teach history at the secondary level, sees service as “a good chance to learn something no classroom can ever teach, which is giving to others.” An officer of student senate and an editor for the campus newspaper, Carter also belongs to a number of fraternal organizations and writes for The Local Q, an online venture. He hopes to compile 100 hours of service before he finishes his QU career, and he has a great start. He calls the New Orleans trip “the most moving and satisfying” of his service activities. “We all had good times, learned a lifetime’s worth of experience, and lived the QU mission statement. Ferd Cheri, OFM, director of campus ministry, echoes Carter’s assessment. “Listening to the stories of those in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the students were affected by lives of the young and the elders. Charitable service and volunteering go a long way as you walk along the path with them.” Fellow mission trip participants, Carlee Bane ’15 and Julie Holdener ’15 concur that service is a joyous part of campus life. Holdener, an honors student and student senate officer, calls it a ripple effect: “When I serve I feel good about myself, I feel motivated to get my homework done, workout, and interact with others.” Bane, an honors student with a double major in environmental biology and psychology, found that the New Orleans adventure gave her fresh ideas for volunteering back on campus. For me, volunteering is my escape, in particular Quincy Equestrian Services and Therapy (QUEST) stables and the Quincy Animal Shelter. “I find spending time at these organizations to be an escape, and when I am done, I am ready to focus on school, work, and other commitments.” The scholars and servants of QU are diverse in many ways, and their future paths will take them in unforeseeable new directions. Earnest, affable, quickwitted, funny, and perhaps above all modest,

Bill Metzinger does not toot his own horn and attributes his considerable successes in life to others—his parents, wife, coaches, mentors—and to good faith and fortune. But this man—CFO of Dot Foods, a community leader, and a happily married fellow with two great kids—deserves a heaping measure of the credit himself. A small-town boy, one of five children, Metzinger came to Quincy University for baseball, basketball, and the Franciscan tradition. “I came to Quincy because it is Catholic and to participate in athletics,” says Metzinger. “It was pretty common at the time for the school to recruit two-sport athletes,” but he admits, “Two sports and academics were more challenge than I was able to do.”

18

QUniverse | Summer 2013

So Metzinger weighed his options and gave up basketball, sticking with baseball, the sport he felt he was stronger in. His father, however, was not pleased and told his son that if he quit basketball, he had better bring home good grades. He did, graduating with about a 3.5 GPA in accounting. “It took a lot of time to be an athlete and a student and that helped me set the right priorities.” Metzinger says, adding that his undergraduate years helped him understand how to compete, how to manage his time, how to get along. His coach from those days, Dewey Kalmer agrees. Kalmer, in his mid-twenties, was not long out of school himself when Metzinger showed up in his field. He remembers Bill as a big kid, sixfoot-four and a lefthanded pitcher: “He threw hard, although

he didn’t always know where the ball was going. He put the fear of God into batters.” Metzinger’s control of the ball improved and so did his game. Kalmer continues, “Bill is the type of guy who would walk the bases loaded and then strike’ em out. I remember pacing the dugout worrying about his control. He probably gave me a gray hair or two.” Kalmer adds that Bill and his brother, Bob, who followed Bill to Quincy and to the baseball team, were not only good players but also leaders. “If things were tough and you lost five or six games in a row, they were the ones holding the team together. They set the goals and encouraged the others. They did things the right way.” Doing things the right way is the Metzinger mantra, inculcated by Bill’s parents, Bud and Lana, who raised their family in the small town of Montrose, Iowa. Metzinger says that his parents set the example with a principled work ethic: His mother became postmaster of their town after the kids were older, and his dad had a career at Sheaffer Pens. Beyond mowing lawns and delivering newspapers, Metzinger’s first entrée into the business world came the summer after his sophomore year at college, where he went to work in the accounting department of Sheaffer Pens. He says, “I knew if I wanted to be in business, I needed to understand how things were measured, how business worked. As I learned more, I realized that if I had a degree in accounting—even if I didn’t go into accounting—that background would help me in business.” A Quincy connection opened Metzinger’s next door. Ken Nesbit ’63, a partner in the CPA firm of for Gray Hunter and Stenn, taught tax law at Quincy and recruited Metzinger to work at the firm part time during his senior year, leading to a full-time position after graduation. In 1983, he moved from the accounting firm to become the chief financial officer of St. Mary Hospital, also in Quincy. He became CEO in 1989 and held that position until the hospital was sold in 1993. That year, Metzinger had an offer from the Tracy family to become CFO of Dot Foods, a food re-distributor

20

headquartered in Mount Sterling, Illinoi. He and his wife, Sue, “pondered quite a bit. In retrospect, it has been a fabulous decision.” Metzinger pointed to the challenge, the opportunity for growth as factors drawing him to Dot. And he found both. When Metzinger joined Dot, net sales were $360 million; in 2012, they were $4.5 billion. It’s clearly been a happy union in many ways. John Tracy, CEO of Dot Foods, has nothing but praise for his CFO, saying that Metzinger has “phenomenal business instincts,” yet at the same time is a people person. “One of his strengths is that he is interested in everybody.” Would he know the names of the janitors at Dot foods? Absolutely, says Tracy. He goes on to say that Metzinger is a bit of an enigma, far from the stereotypical numbers guy, “He’s charistmatic, he’s engaging, and he loves people.” These traits have helped Metzinger succeed in a familyrun company, where he holds one of the top three positions. Family members occupy the other two. Tracy adds that Metzinger “understands the family in the business and the business in the family.” Perhaps Metzinger understands the Tracy corporate dynamic because he places such high value on family himself. Having been raised in a supportive, nurturing, Christian home, Metzinger and his wife, Sue, have created their own on the same model. The couple met through friends during college—Bill at Quincy and Sue at a junior college. The first time he asked her out, Sue turned him down, saying she was going on vacation with her parents. Bill screwed up his courage and asked her out again. They married in August after his senior year and he calls it, “the best decision of my life.” Sue and Bill have two grown children and are adjusting easily to life as empty-nesters. Sue visits the kids, Katie in Madison, Wisconsin, and young Bill in St. Louis, as often as possible and joins Bill on business trips. They enjoy golfing together and, word has it, Bill is an acquisitive oenophile. Bill and Sue also believe in giving back to the community, another piece of the Metzinger family code. Metzinger’s brother, Bob, talks about the family’s sharing spirit. “We

were not a family of means, but if mom and dad had anything, a piece of it would be available to anyone who needed it more than we did. We saw shirts, pants, shoes that used to be ours on other kids. Mom would sometimes take a piece of our furniture and give it to someone who needed it more than we did.” Bill and Sue are active in St. Peter Parish in Quincy and at Quincy Notre Dame High School. Bill has served on many boards, as well, including the Mental Health Authority of West Central Illinois and the Adams County Mental Health Center. The list is quite long, but Metzinger is modest about this side of his accrued accomplishments as well. The Metzingers are known for their dedication to Quincy University. Bill says that although Sue didn’t graduate from QU, she feels like an alum in every way but for the degree. Metzinger has worked to open doors for Quincy students at Dot Foods, which recruits on campus He speaks highly of the students he sees and their education: “Quincy University distinguishes itself through the liberal arts and the Franciscan education.” Metzinger has served on the QU board of trustees for nine years, the maximum length possible, and will step off this fall. He was on the board when the university chose Robert Gervasi to become president. Gervasi recalls meeting Metzinger and the impression the trustee made on him: “Bill was one of the first trustees I met when I was considering coming to QU, and I was very impressed. I thought, ‘If this guy—with his quiet wisdom and deep humanity, as well as his financial acumen—exemplifies Quincy University’s culture and aspirations, then QU is a really special place.’ And it is—just like Bill!”

Metzinger is a bit of an enigma, far from the stereotypical numbers guy, “He’s charismatic, he’s engaging, and he loves people.”

Servant, leader, family man, scholar, and athlete, Bill Metzinger is the quintessential QU alum.

Gumbo F r . F e r d a d d s s p i c e to o u r c u lt u r a l st e w BY FR. JOSEPH ZIMMERMAN, OFM

I never realized what a marvelous eating

experience gumbo could provide until Fr. Ferd came to Quincy University and Holy Cross Friary.

Fr. Ferd makes gumbo—industrial quantity gumbo, gumbo made in large pots two feet high and two feet wide. He makes it often and invites many guests to the friary to eat it. The rest of us friars get to enjoy it too. Fernand Cheri III, OFM, is African-American and a native of New Orleans. He served there as a diocesan priest for thirteen years, and in 1992 he joined the Franciscan Order in our Sacred Heart Province. Two years ago Fr. Ferd came to Quincy University as director of campus ministry. 22

QUniverse | Summer 2013

Throughout his priestly career, which has included being pastor both in New Orleans and in Nashville, he has been active in black Catholic liturgy, serving as chairperson of the Archbishop James P. Lyke Conference (a black Catholic liturgical conference), board member of the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus, and contributing author of Sweet, Sweet Spirit: Prayer Services from the Black Catholic Church. Most recently he has become involved in the Springfield, Illinois, diocesan Office of Social Concerns and Respect for Life, in an effort to make the diocese more welcoming to black Catholics. Along with all his other activities, Fr. Ferd has found time to present parish missions (“revivals”) in dozens of places from coast to coast.

Franciscan Focus | QU

Fr. Ferd has helped move the university forward in pursing diversity and inclusiveness. Of his efforts, Fr. Ferd says, “I try to bring them the spirit of St. Francis, who stood in solidarity with others. I have learned to appreciate the diversity of students from rural Illinois and Missouri as well as students from urban areas.”

struggle, knowing that ‘weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.’ I feel that I am constantly learning what it takes to be a campus minister for God is still using me in his service. I pray that I be a model to all the students, especially to the black students, of how we are called to serve all in the name of Jesus Christ.”

Quincy University, you may recall, besides welcoming women to campus already in the 1930s, began to welcome black students in the 1940s. A 1946 Quincy Herald-Whig clipping describes the QU football team of that year. The team included a player named Earl, “Lefty” Johnson, “speedy Negro from Muskegon, Michigan . . .Negro speedster and thrower of long passes.” The 1950s saw basketball coach Harry Forrester recruit black players and introduce QU’s opponents to them. (The recent celebrations of Jackie Robinson remind us that blacks were routinely denied entrance to white teams in all sports, presumably because they were considered not to have the ability to compete with white players.)

As the country’s demographics change, the call to meet the challenges of diversity grows. Fr. Ferd is helping QU adapt to that new reality, combining his unique background and experiences with the unique character of QU.

Fr. Ferd mixes it up musically as well. He has a special interest in gospel music, has compiled discographies of that music, and manages a collection of more than 5000 recordings of it. He also serves as director of the Althoff Catholic High School Gospel Choir in Belleville, Illinois. Last March, Fr. Ferd made use of his New Orleans connections to set up arrangements for fifty students to do service projects there during spring break. Anyone familiar with the work required to organize events can imagine what had to be done to find work sites, food, and lodging for fifty-plus people, as well as teams of insurance-acceptable drivers to get them from Quincy to New Orleans in seven vans. He says, “When designing the mission trip to New Orleans, I made a priority to give the students a taste of not only New Orleans hospitality, but I designed it also to help them experience the people and places that have formed me as a minister in the Catholic Church. From day one to the last night, the students met my family and friends who nurtured me along the way. They got to see my immediate family, key ministers who played a significant role in my vocation, some friends, and former students that touched my life along the way.” The mix of mission, culture, and community was a huge success with the participants. Back at Quincy University, Fr. Ferd continues to challenge himself in his campus ministry role. He says, “ I desire to bring to all students the presence of God, challenging them to recognize that God is giving them time to get it right as God wants their lives to be. I rejoice with them when the light of Christ brightens their minds and spirit. I also walk with them in the midst of

I have learned a lot from them.” Guided by her parents’ leadership and encouragement, Neu first heard the call to professional ministry during her years at Quincy University through various internships and extracurricular activities. “The internship I had throughout my junior and senior years helped me to find my passion for ministering to others and my involvement with Campus Ministry—especially the Koinonia retreat—helped me to start forming the skills that I use today,” Neu said. Even while working full-time, Neu has managed to further her education in the classroom. In May of this year, Neu earned her masters in pastoral studies from Chicago’s Catholic Theological Union.

Believe in your Dreams “Once upon a time I never thought that I would be who I am today. And all of that goes back to donors like you.” I would not be here without your support. You deserve more than just a thank you, but a promise. The promise that the students you support will achieve their dreams, and when it is time for someone else to start dreaming, they will aid them, like you have aided us. Jacquelyn Diaz, a native of Roundlake, Illinois, is a senior majoring in special education and recipient of the Don Schonhoff Memorial Scholarship, which benefits a student who personally or whose family has been affected by cancer.

June 2012—maY 2013 QuinCY univeRsiTY fund

A

s the 2012-2013 fiscal year draws to a close, it’s time to reflect on the outstanding generosity of our alumni, friends, employees, parents, students, businesses, foundations, and trusts. We surpassed our $1,000,000 QU Fund goal in support of annual expenses and endowment, and restricted giving exceeded last year by 140 percent. Total gifts received exceeded $4.5 million. Special thanks go to Bill Metzinger ’74, who chaired the fund, members of the board of trustees, and our dedicated volunteers for their support and encouragement. While there have been many memorable moments associated with our accomplishments, there is one occasion that stands out from the rest. Shortly after spring break, Jevante Francis, a freshman from the Virgin Islands, stopped by my office and asked if I had time to visit with him. His demeanor was very serious and I felt as though something must be wrong. I discovered this to be quite the contrary. This young man told me that he had just returned from a QU mission trip to New Orleans, along with forty-nine other students, faculty, and friars (see article on page 11 of the transverse side). Jevante shared that this experience was life-changing. He said that he came back with a greater appreciation for all the blessings in his life and that he wanted to give back and help students less fortunate than he. He asked if QU would accept a monthly gift from him, noting that he could not give much at this time. After visiting further, he decided to divide his monthly gift three ways—the student emergency fund, an endowed scholarship fund for needy students, and the textbook loan program. At the end of our visit, I was overcome with emotion. For those of you who question whether the Franciscan spirit is alive and well on campus—rest assured, it is.

Julie Bell Vice President for University Advancement
