have exemplified Franciscan values and a strong work ethic through their families, careers and areas of service, and that legacy continues.
“Like Hawks above the Mississippi, our own QU Hawks are soaring higher than ever.”
To live near the Mississippi River, as we do in Quincy, is to see countless birds of prey. Huge eagles and hawks can be observed for much of the year, as they fly high above the river and surrounding terrain while looking for food. They are a wonder of God’s creation.
At a time when there is so much to celebrate at Quincy University, I sometimes find myself smiling while I watch the flight of those birds. Like hawks above the Mississippi, our own QU Hawks are soaring higher than ever.
First, with recent favorable news from an accreditor, we now know that history will be made in January 2026, when we begin instruction for students in our first-ever clinical doctorate program, the Doctor of Occupational Therapy Degree. This program, years in the making, will provide an innovative approach to this coursework and, we believe, fill a vital need in our community and region. A new doctoral program in Physical Therapy should follow shortly, if all goes as planned.
Second, we are continuing to improve the facilities used by all members of our community. In the busiest summer I can remember for construction projects and improvements at QU, we have renovated dozens of laboratories, classrooms, and offices, with a record quantity of new furnishings found throughout most of our larger buildings. Our newest classrooms and laboratories at the North Campus, created with state grant support and costing millions of dollars to complete, will support our new programs in engineering and the health sciences. We’ve also seen significant improvements at the QU Baseball Stadium and the Health & Fitness Center. Getting this work completed during the summer months was a major challenge, but only a few projects were still unfinished by the first day of classes in late August.
Third, for the third time in four years, and for only the third time in the past thirty years, we have welcomed a freshman class of over 300 students to Quincy University for Fall 2025, along with a large group of transfer students. These talented students have brought energy and excitement to campus, along with a few entirely predictable complaints about parking. Marsha and I were
delighted to continue our tradition of serving my favorite meal, chicken and waffles, to our new and returning students during the first week of classes, complete with such traditional toppings as Oreo cookie crumbles, chocolate chips, and chocolate syrup. Fourth, even in times of economic unpredictability, the alumni and friends of Quincy University continue to believe in this great institution and to set new records for fundraising. As we announced a few months ago, we set new QU records for the QU Fund and for overall fundraising during the 2024-2025 academic year. With an amazing $19 million raised last year, Quincy University is able to do more for our students and to support our wonderful faculty and staff.
At a time when complaints about higher education are increasingly common, our alumni and friends know that a Catholic and Franciscan education at Quincy University is part of the solution -- not part of the problem. I am grateful that so many of you have made sacrifices to support QU financially.
For years, I have tried to use QUniverse to convey the sense of unity, purpose, movement, and progress I experience every day as QU president. If you haven’t been on campus in the past few years, please come back home to Quincy and QU! You’ll love what you see.
Sincerely,
Brian McGee, PhD President

ANGE
“When I found out that I could actually go to college for swimming and that I would get a scholarship, that allowed me to be the first college kid in my family.”
Angelina Pogliaccio comes to Quincy University from Texas. She’s a sport communication/public relations major and a member of the QU swim team. When she started considering going to college, she was surprised that she could get a scholarship to compete on a swim team.
As a first-generation college student, Angelina is proud to be a Hawk and credits her family and her coaches for motivating her to advance in her sport and to excel as a sports communicator.
“I've always been passionate about connecting with people and sharing stories that matter, especially in the world of sports.”
by Chris Brennemann, PhD
“What drew me to communications was the ability to highlight the hard work, dedication, and personal journeys of athletes, many of whom have incredible stories that deserve to be told.”
Angelina loves the challenge of finding the right way to share those stories and the impact that thoughtful storytelling can have both on and off the field. She manages the QU swim team Instagram account and creates content that highlights QU athletes’ achievements, behind-the-scenes moments, and team

“I enjoy how fair the sport of swimming is. You can’t cheat a clock. The clock is always right -no matter what happens.”
“The first time Angelina and I sat in the QU Media Podcast studio I knew I was working with an exceptional student. Her passion for communication and engagement is infectious. She is an accomplished photographer and storyteller. It is a pleasure to work with her as she pursues her dream.”

spirit, building a strong online community that connects swimmers, coaches, fans, and alumni.
Angelina credits her communication professor Nora Baldner for motivating and challenging her personally and professionally.
“She truly loves what she does, and it shows through her teaching and all the effort she puts into each of her students. It’s inspiring to see how much she cares, not just about the subject but about helping us grow. I deeply admire her work ethic, her passion, and the kind of person she is both inside and outside the classroom.”
Angelina’s passion to excel in her college career and in her profession began with
her commitment and discipline related to competitive swimming. She started swimming when she was eight and by eleven, she envisioned becoming a college level swimmer.
Angelina stands out as a swimmer, but there was a time when she almost gave up on the sport and struggled to find direction in life.
When she was 15 years old, she lost one of her best friends who was also her boyfriend.
“After he passed, I felt completely lost. For the first month, I was ready to give up everything - swimming, school, all of it.” But then she had a heartfelt conversation with her boyfriend’s mom, and Angelina says, “It changed everything.”
“She encouraged me to keep going and to do it all for him. From that moment on, I dedicated myself to swimming and life with him in mind. To this day, I carry him with me in everything I accomplish.”
Angelina is grateful for her mom and her coaches who supported her. “Because of them, I’m not only swimming, I'm thriving. And I’m proud of where I am today.”

SPRING 2025 COMMENCEMENT
The climb toward the goals that matter is never-ending, but every step is lighter when you walk with a family like QU.
graduate students
It takes 14 steps to cross the Commencement platform, with a momentous pause in the middle to accept that prized diploma. But the distance in dreams, hopes, and accomplishments is much greater— perhaps impossible to calculate.
Saturday, May 17, 2025, was a perfect day to take that walk—not too hot, not too cool, not a cloud in sight. Each student was accompanied—in person or in
spirit—by 179 fellow graduates who knew better than anyone the joy of the moment and the struggles that made it possible.
QU Stadium was packed as 23 graduate students and 157 undergrads received their degrees and strode into a bright future. They entered the path paved by the achievements of fellow alums, including William Metzinger ‘74 who received an honorary degree
by Barbara Schleppenbach, PhD ‘71
undergraduate students
and Ralph Oakley ‘80 who delivered the Commencement address.
They were welcomed by student speaker, Katalina Lopez, who chose lyrics by Miley Cyrus to compare her class’s experience to climbing a mountain of uncertainty and self-doubt. “Success isn’t always about doing things quickly,” she declared. “It’s about doing them your way, on your own time. What matters is that we’re here now, and we never stopped climbing.”
“What made this climb a little easier—and a whole lot more memorable—were the people climbing beside us. QU isn’t just your average university. It’s a family. We don’t stop climbing. Because growth isn’t about how fast we get to the top. It’s about who we become along the way.”
- KATALINA LOPEZ Student Speaker
As he expressed gratitude for his honorary degree, Bill Metzinger echoed that sentiment. Quoting former Franciscan provincial and Board chair Fr. Tom Nairn, Bill affirmed that “the best measurement of a successful life is to look into the mirror each morning and ask yourself, ‘Who are you in the eyes of God?’”
Former QU Board chair and current Trustee, Ralph Oakley spoke of the many roads that have led students to Quincy University. Citing conversations with successful alums, he concluded,
“It really doesn’t matter how you got here, and I am sure every single person's journey is distinct. What matters is that you got here and, more importantly, what matters is what you learned and what you will take away from this experience and use for the rest of your life.”
- RALPH OAKLEY QU Trustee
Who are you?
total student graduates
Ralph encouraged students to seek opportunities to follow their passions, the things that make them “unique contributors in a world that needs their contribution.”
He reminded them that no matter what roads brought them to QU, the alums he has met share those qualities of unique talent and deep commitment.
“They took the things they learned here with them, and they have not only been happy and content but have become contributors to our community and the world. They took their knowledge, mixed it with passion, and came up with an unbeatable combination. I suspect when they faced challenges throughout their lives it was that same passion and learning that helped carry them through.”
- RALPH OAKLEY QU Trustee
The speakers captured what the graduates were feeling on that sunny day: The climb toward the goals that matter is never-ending, but every step is lighter when you walk with a family like QU.
2024–25 HAWK HIGHLIGHTS
by Assistant Sports Information Director, Alex Aubuchon, MBA ‘24
A DEFINING CHAPTER IN ATHLETIC HISTORY
In a season that will be remembered as a de ning chapter in Quincy University’s athletic history, the Hawks soared to unprecedented success during the 2024–25 academic year.
With triumphs on the court, in the classroom, on the mat, in the pool and beyond, the year was marked by a winning culture that continues to spread across all 28 of QU’s varsity athletic programs.
At the heart of it all was the women’s basketball team, which delivered one of the most thrilling and memorable runs the university has seen in years. After two decades without a conference title, the Hawks returned to the top of the Great Lakes Valley Conference, winning the 2025 GLVC Tournament Championship—the program’s first since 2005. It was a storybook season filled with grit, teamwork, and late-game heroics, and it culminated with Quincy’s return to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time since 2016.
The Hawks were fueled by a talented and disciplined roster that produced three All-GLVC honorees, one All-Region selection, and three program records broken over the course of the year. Their balanced attack and suffocating defense turned heads across the region, and their postseason dominance was no fluke. At the helm, head coach Courtney Boyd guided her team with clarity and purpose, earning well-deserved recognition as the GLVC Coach of the Year—a fitting honor for a program that reestablished itself as a force in the region.
The women’s basketball team’s championship run was the highlight of a year that saw numerous other programs deliver exceptional seasons, none more consistent and statistically impressive than Quincy’s women’s volleyball team. For the third straight year, the Hawks punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament while capturing a share of the GLVC Regular Season Title for the second time in three seasons.
The foundation of the program’s success was senior standout Emma Wijnbergen, whose final season will go down as one of the most dominant in program and conference history. Wijnbergen’s 601 kills set a new QU and GLVC single-season record, and her average of 5.09 kills per set was not only a school record but also the best in the conference for the 24-25 season. Her career concluded with 1,678 total kills, tying the all-time QU record. Along the way, she was named GLVC Player of the Year, earned All-America honors from both the AVCA and D2CCA, and became a CSC Academic All-American. She also took home QU’s prestigious Mart Heinen Career Achievement Award, honoring her for her production and for her leadership and impact on the culture of the program.
The volleyball team itself broke four records this season and demonstrated once again that Quincy is home to one of the region’s top-tier volleyball programs—one built on power, precision, and consistency.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Speaking of national impact, men’s swimming reached uncharted territory this year, turning heads across the Division II landscape. The team shattered 12 program records and made a splash at the GLVC Championships, before sending two swimmers to the NCAA Championships. There, junior Wyatt Walsh made history by placing sixth in the 400 IM, becoming Quincy men’s swimming’s first-ever All-American. Walsh, along with teammate Borna Kisasondi, also earned All-American Honorable Mention recognition, capping the program’s most successful season to date. The team was also honored as a CSCAA Team Scholar All-America selection, balancing national-level competition with academic achievement.
Another cornerstone of the university’s rising athletic profile is women’s wrestling, which enjoyed a transformative season in 2024–25. Still a relatively young program, the team made a statement with 10 dual wins, six national qualifiers, and a breakthrough into the national rankings. The Hawks crowned five regular-season individual tournament champions and continued to blaze a trail on the mat with their most decorated season to date.
Leading the charge was Trinity Pendergrass, who set a new standard by becoming the first All-American in program history after a remarkable postseason run. She also captured a regional championship and was rightfully named Jack Mackenzie Female Athlete of the Year by the university. For his leadership and guidance, head coach Jeff Haley earned Mart Heinen Coach of the Year honors. The program’s growth was about more than just wins. Seven team members were honored as NWCA Scholar All-Americans, proving that the team’s impact extended to the classroom as well.
That academic excellence was not limited to swimming. Quincy student-athletes across all sports combined to produce an astounding 273 Academic All-GLVC selections, up from 221 the previous year. Twelve teams earned the Team Academic All-GLVC Award, building upon nine selections from the prior season. An additional 13 individual athletes earned Scholar All-American honors from various national organizations, and two QU squads were named Team Scholar All-Americans. There was no shortage of success elsewhere either. Men’s tennis set a new single-season wins record (13) and made a second straight GLVC Tournament appearance.
Sprint football, still a relatively new program, rewrote its record book with 29 new program marks and nine All-MSFL selections. Men’s and women’s lacrosse combined for 35 records broken, while men’s soccer and women’s soccer combined for more than 50 Academic All-GLVC picks.
On the field, football featured one All-American, 14 All-GLVC players, and 22 Academic All-GLVC honorees while head coach Jason Killday garnered Mart Heinen Coach of the Year honors. Softball and baseball each produced multiple All-GLVC picks, and the baseball team led the department with 33 Academic All-GLVC selections.
WOMEN'S WRESTLING
MEN'S SWIMMING
Even first-year and developing programs found the win column. Cheer & Stunt, in its inaugural season, earned its first program victory with a 12–4 win over Northern Kentucky.
What tied all of these achievements together was not just talent, but a cultural shift—an increasingly visible commitment across the department to championship standards, academic integrity, and team-first identity. Whether it was a trophy raised in front of a roaring crowd or a GPA celebrated quietly in the classroom, Quincy student-athletes made their mark everywhere they went.
The legacy of the 2024–25 season will linger—not just in the banners, records, and awards, but in the momentum and belief it builds. This was more than just a successful season — it was a signal to the conference, the region, and the nation: Quincy University Athletics is here, and it’s building something special. The Hawks are only getting started.

ART AND JEANNE WILLENBORG INSTILLED FRANCISCAN VALUES, STRONG WORK ETHIC AND FAITH COMMITMENT INTO THEIR THREE CHILDREN, AND THAT LEGACY CONTINUES.
by Chris Brennemann, PhD
The Class of ’57 Had its Dreams…
ART WILLENBORG AND HIS QUINCY COLLEGE FRIENDS AND TEAMMATES
MAY HAVE BEEN ONE EXAMPLE OF THE STATLER’S BROTHERS’ “THE CLASS OF ’57.”
ALTHOUGH THIS SONG WAS ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES, ART, A 1957 QC ALUMNUS, CERTAINLY HAD HIS DREAMS AND BROUGHT SOME CHANGE TO THE WORLD AROUND HIM.
Art attended a university in St. Louis his first year out of high school in 1953. He interacted with some Quincy College graduates who were very successful, so he looked into transferring to Quincy College. Arts says he valued that “QC was a small, Catholic college with a Franciscan tradition.” He became a QC Hawk in 1954.
Art’s athleticism was apparent. He played basketball and baseball at Quincy in 1954-1955. He was on the 1955 Hawks basketball team that not only was the first QC team to qualify for the NAIA national tournament – they were the first QC team to win the national title. This team had the highest winning percentage in the school’s history at that time. The 1954-1955 basketball team was inducted into the QU Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.
Art also coached the Quincy College freshman basketball team in 1955 and 1956.
Art earned his management degree in 1957 and worked as an IRS agent, serving Milwaukee, Springfield, Quincy and East St. Louis, for the first nine years of his career. He served in the military from 1958-1960. Art owned his own tax consulting business in Effingham, Illinois, until he retired in 2000.
Art notes several faculty members and coaches that impacted his life while at QC including Fathers Landry Genosky, Pacific Hug, Columban Yellovich, Philibert Heobing and Brian Kirn, and Coach Harry Forrester.
Art also recalls fond memories related to playing card games in the Student Union and going to weekend parties at South Park.
Throughout his career and into his retirement, Art has been very active with his local church and has served on several boards for local businesses and organizations, and for St. Anthony’s School, his high school alma mater.
Art and his wife Jeanne instilled Franciscan values and strong work ethic and faith commitment into their three children, and that legacy continues.
Art and Jeanne’s son Bob graduated from QU in 1989 with an accounting degree and is currently the CFO of J & J Ventures Gaming, a national leader in gaming and amusements.
Their daughters Geri and Cathy are also QU alumni, graduating in 1993 and 1995. Geri is the owner of Splatzz Paint Studio in Daytona, Florida, and Cathy is the Vice President of Merchandising & Events at Compass Group USA – Chartwells.

THE CONNECTION TO Pope Leo XIV
ON MAY 8, 2025,
ROBERT F. PREVOST,
BECAME THE FIRST POPE BORN IN THE UNITED STATES.
THE SURPRISE ANNOUNCEMENT OF AN AMERICAN POPE WAS A SOURCE OF GREAT EXCITEMENT FOR AMERICAN CATHOLICS.
by Brian McGee, PhD
A native of Chicago and an avid fan of the Chicago White Sox, Pope Leo XIV’s own educational journey included degrees earned at two great American Catholic institutions, Villanova University in Philadelphia and the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. Many of us quickly learned as well from media reports that the Pope’s parents both received degrees from another fine Catholic institution, DePaul University.
It took some weeks and research, though, to discover that the Holy Father’s family story includes Quincy University.
For this part of the story, we begin with the arrival at Ellis S.S. Perugia in June 1903. On board the Perugia was Salvatore Giovanni Riggitano, who came to the U.S. from Sicily just a few weeks before his twenty-seventh birthday. On board as well were Riggitano’s two sisters and his new brother-in-law, another Italian immigrant who had already lived in Quincy, Illinois.
Island of the brother-in-law, another Italian immigrant who had already and Street. at
Riggitano and his other family members soon made their way to Quincy, where Giovanni and his family members lived on Maine Street. Giovanni would soon enroll at St. Francis Solanus College, which we know now as Quincy University.
Quincy University. “John
Using the name “John Riggitano,” he would spend three academic years – from Fall 1904 to Spring 1907 – taking courses in English, French, theology, music, and business. Riggitano also held teaching positions elsewhere in Quincy, while continuing his education at St. Francis Solanus College.
With under 300 students, the College was much smaller than it is today. Moreover, many of the students were under the age of 18. A new immigrant with imperfect English, John Riggitano would have been one of the oldest students at what was then (and now) the only Catholic college or university in the region.
What would Riggitano’s experience at St. Francis Solanus College have been like?
What an honor.
Almost all of Riggitano’s professors were Franciscan friars, and they were tough graders. Riggitano reportedly had been well educated in Italy, but he was studying in a second language at the College while simultaneously holding one or more jobs in Quincy. Like many QU students today, he would have worked long hours, with little time for rest or relaxation.
While the current QU Chapel wouldn’t be built until 1911, what we today know as Francis Hall was completed in 1898. The same hallways we walk today were used by this talented, hard-working immigrant, who would eventually found a highly regarded languages school in Chicago.
The man known in Quincy as John Riggitano died in 1960 and was survived by his wife and two sons. Of course, we have more to learn about his family and their story, including their deep Catholic faith. How Riggitano eventually came to use the last name “Prevost” has already been the subject of much speculation.
What we do know is that John Riggitano’s success as a Chicago-area teacher and as an American immigrant is difficult to imagine without his time at QU and with the friars. At Quincy University, we are honored to be part of the family story of Pope Leo XIV.
Did you know?
Are you a scholar or educator who wants to learn more about John Riggitano (Prevost) and the Riggitano and Prevost families? Quincy University’s Brenner Library is creating a Riggitano collection, which, when complete, will be available for scholarly use.

Music
AT QUINCY UNIVERSITY
by Chris Brennemann, PhD
“QU provides a great atmosphere to teach in, and the students that we have been able to recruit have been really enjoyable to work with. We have a very collaborative environment in the music department, and together we have boosted the talent level of students in the program and grown our reputation in the region.”
-BILL MACHOLD Assistant Professor of Music & Director of Bands.
tHE QU MUSIC DEGREE PROGRAM PROVIDES students a well-rounded educational experience in both instrumental and vocal music and offers three music degrees:
• BA in Music (Instrumental or Vocal)
• BS in Music Education (Illinois K-12 music certification)
• BA in Communication/Music Production.
Minors are available in music theory, music history, music performance and music education.
The music program is committed to offering a hands-on approach to music and music education. The program is designed so students study one on one with professors who are also professional musicians, which gives students opportunities to study, perform, and teach music under the guidance of skilled professionals. Students thrive in small, technology-enhanced classrooms and perform in the Connie Niemann Center for Music.
Students can participate in a variety of music ensembles including marching band, jazz band, symphonic band, concert choir, and chamber choir. Chamber music opportunities include saxophone quartet, clarinet quartet, percussion ensemble, brass ensemble, and vocal jazz ensemble. Music ensembles are open to students of all majors.
tHE QU MUSIC PROGRAM HAS GROWN in both numbers and level of students. Christine Damm, DMA, Dean of the School of Fine Arts and Communication, says that QU's music programs take their ensembles on tours each year and now offer a huge variety of music outreach events including:
• Clarinet Day
• Saxophone Day
• Honor Jazz Band Festival
• Choral Festival
• Percussion Camp
Study
ABROAD
tHE QU MUSIC STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM was implemented in 2019. It has provided the opportunity for students to travel to Germany, Austria, and Italy to learn about music history and see where famous composers grew up, studied, and composed music.
Bill Machold says that the study abroad trips have provided some special memories. “They have been amazing experiences for our students and for me personally. I have to thank QU for encouraging and supporting those educational opportunities for its students and faculty.”
THE MUSIC PROGRAM’S SUMMER 2025 STUDY ABROAD TO ITALY INCLUDED 47 TRAVELERS.
“I can honestly say that I enjoy coming to work every day. I consider it a privilege to be able to make my living by teaching and performing music, and QU gives me the opportunity and the platform to do just that.”
-BILL MACHOLD Assistant Professor of Music & Director of Bands.
“Our hands-on approach and small class sizes really make a difference. Students will have experience performing, conducting, and teaching before they graduate.”
-CHRISTINE DAMM Dean of the School of Fine Arts and Communication
“QU's
music program prepared me for my professional career by offering unique opportunities and specialized one-onone mentorship that is sometimes hard to find in smaller university settings”
JESSE MOSE ‘24 Director of Music & Liturgy, St. Peter Church
-
tHE QU MUSIC PROGRAM ALSO STANDS OUT with a high success rate of immediate employment and graduate school acceptance for QU music alumni. Many music education majors receive job offers before they are done student teaching. Some students who have pursued master’s degrees received graduate assistantships with universities they are attending.
“My greatest reward was having something that I was thrilled to work on. I felt it embodied my style, and that helped my performance tell a complete story that people enjoyed hearing.”
-ALANNA EDGECOMB Music Performance Major
at Quincy University
QU music degree alumni serve in a variety of professional and ministry roles. Christine Damm explains, “Students who graduate in music from QU are teaching music both at the K-12 and collegiate levels, performing in professional ensembles, teaching private music lessons, serving as church musicians, and working in the television and radio industry.”

The library has been a great resource of information for me. As a history major, having a large collection of information on hand has been very beneficial.

THIS IS THE BUSY WE ASKED FOR
A frequent saying around the Library is, “This is the busy we asked for.”
GROWTH FOR LIFELONG LEARNING
Besides offering physical materials one expects to find in a university library, Brenner Library provides students and community members with spaces and activities intended for growth and lifelong learning. With Friday morning yoga, craft sessions, academic classes, community meetings, and exhibits in Gray Gallery, Brenner Library invites participation on many levels.
Susan Grant, Education Technology Specialist, is an important connection between the campus bookstore and students, working with administration and faculty to ensure textbooks are available to students on the first day of class. Her work with Moodle learning management system sets students and faculty up for academic success.
Rare Collections
Lindsey Witt, Instructional Librarian and Preservation Archivist, brings the library’s special and rare collections to life and protects them for the future. She arrived at Brenner just months before The Mark Twain Collection was given to QU by Fontbonne University, catapulting her into a crash course of regional history and literature. The Mark Twain collection, Franciscan collection, and local history materials from Landry Genosky OFM, have become highlights of QU tours for prospective students, returning alumni, and the whole campus community.
The foundation of service, servant leadership, and Franciscan values laid by Pat Tomczak, Br. Terry Santiapillai OFM, and Vivian Funke is vital in understanding the Library as a touchstone in the academic experiences and success of QU students.
Built in the late 1960s, the Library has continuously welcomed new technology and materials as a means for serving campus needs. Brenner holds over 109,000 physical items with three times that many digital and electronic resources. The advent of AI has returned research to physical materials – as a way to prevent accusations of plagiarism from digital resources and to ensure students explore a greater variety of materials.
"It is both appropriate and serendipitous that this prominent collection has come to the Brenner Library at Quincy University. Sam Clemens (Mark Twain) grew up in nearby Hannibal, Missouri on the other side of the Mississippi River and enjoyed a ‘river town rivalry’ with Quincy newspapers (such as the Daily Quincy Whig) as early as 1853 when he was a boy working on his brother Orion’s paper, the Hannibal Journal.
-Cindy Lovell, adjunct professor of English Lovell teaches Mark Twain courses at QU, reviewed the Mark Twain Collection. Lovell is the former executive director of both the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum in Hannibal, MO and the Mark Twain House & Museum in Hartford, CT.
BELLA SPARROW,
history major and Brenner Student Assistant, shares, “The library has been a great resource of information for me. As a history major, having a large collection of information on hand has been very beneficial. The staff have also been extremely helpful in times of need. Examples would be suggesting certain books that discuss specific topics as well as getting books from neighboring libraries.”
ZEYNEP CETIN,
business management major and Brenner Student Assistant, describes Brenner as “my safe space” –encapsulating the welcoming environment that allows students to learn about themselves and just be who they are in the library.
KATIE KRAUSHAAR,
Dean of Brenner, takes pride in seeing students find their own ways to use Brenner’s spaces. “Seeing Hawk Games, International Student Club, and other clubs meet here is fantastic. We encourage students to use Brenner to study independently and in groups, plan events, or rest up between classes. If we can nudge them toward better resources and listen to their concerns at the same time –or provide coffee and a snack – all the better; we all need that support.”
Working closely with the Success Coaches, QUEST Center, and Student Activities is also vital work at Brenner. “There are so many students who are introduced to the Library through our Success Coaches, building on established relationships and being encouraged along the way,” says Katie. “It is fully collaborative to ensure students know where to go and who to ask. Just asking the right person can drastically change students’ experiences here.”
Every interaction can influence the Library experience and success for the whole QU community. Katie says, “If we want students, faculty, and staff to use the library, we have to be visible where they are – in the Café, at their games, walking around campus, giving directions on check-in days, hosting Wake-Up Wednesday.” This invitation extends to alumni and community members who are welcome to visit the library and use the physical collections and computers during regular hours.
“My goal is to make the library more visible to the campus as a whole –reaching out to students, faculty, and staff to offer support, build relationships, and create a welcoming space for study and leisure.”

A with Katie Kraushaar
Dean of Library and Information Services
Katie Kraushaar holds an MS in Library & Information Services. She began her career at the Quincy Public Library as a Reference Librarian and Book Club liaison, going on to serve as Assistant Manager and Community Engagement Librarian. In May 2022, Katie joined the QU community as Information Literacy & Electronic Resources Librarian.
Q Can you give us an overview of what you do & what led you to serve in this role?
AI am celebrating two years as Dean of Library & Information Services at Brenner Library. I get to order books, plan events, and share resources with our faculty and students. I offer guidance to the minds that will be leading families, communities, and businesses in the future. And I get to record and preserve the history of QU.
I am responsible for Brenner’s librarians, student workers, and volunteers; budget, classroom instruction and library tours; committee work, outreach, Library consortia liaison, and general research and circulation.
Byron Holdiman, former QU librarian, reached out when I was ready for a change. After a year working with Pat Tomczak, Br. Terry Santiapillai, Susan Grant, and Vivian Funke, I knew Brenner and QU were the right places for me. I wanted to work with patrons who chose to be at QU, mentoring lifelong learners and the chronically curious.
Q What are some of the most rewarding moments in your work with students?
AWatching students connect assignments to resources they find and seeing them dig deeper into research to tell others what they learned is supremely gratifying. It is a bonus when the right article or book is available – like magic – for a patron at the moment they need it.
There is immense reward in seeing students become confident in their research abilities, making new observations, thinking critically instead of regurgitating facts. I want to encourage students’ intellectual growth and help them establish a sense of conviction as they learn.
Q What are some principles you want to instill in students?
A
Accountability: Take personal accountability: in real life, on social media, or in any other format.
Thoughtfulness: Take the time to consider the impact of what you do BEFORE action is taken and damage is done.
Find and value your people: Surround yourself with people who hold you accountable and for whom you want to be thoughtful. Hold them to the same standards you hold yourself.
Q What life lessons shaped your values in how you interact with your students?
AI was a shy child, which made me hesitant to ask for help, so I want to be approachable and non-judgmental with others, especially those I mentor in research.
I decided not to be a pessimist and be positive-minded and pleasant. I ask for good news at the beginning of conversations to set a tone for gratitude and problem-solving.
As a supervisor, I need ways to show appreciation in daily interactions: How to support students? Do they need a place to focus? A hug, a pat on the back, or a push in a new direction? Then, how can I make that happen? I thank everyone often, because our interactions and conversations are worthwhile.
Q Who has been the most important person in your life?
A My mother Marge Kraushaar taught practical skills in easy-to-remember ways. She modeled how to welcome everyone, to care about those who make it difficult to do so, and find humor in everyday life.
Q What is one of the most defining moments in your life?
A
Inviting Ben Bumbry & the Messengers to headline the The Big Read in 2010. As we planned the event, it was like an avalanche of energy. Ben told me he couldn’t believe the turnout of over 1000 people. We knew the collaboration with Ben & the Messengers would have an impact on our community beyond book discussions and film screenings and special speakers: we built a foundation of trust that lasted nearly a decade.
Q How has your work & research influenced your career & your faith?
A
Reading was the first, big draw. I was more comfortable reading than talking. I read Esther and Ruth during long sermons to learn how to walk in faith. These lessons in patience and impatience were and are very useful – knowing when to wait and when to act, in God’s time and by his will –for the best possible outcome.
Q What are your goals for the library?
A
To ensure members of the QU community are welcomed into the Library and encouraged to ask questions. That all our resources meet the academic needs of students and faculty, using professional standards.
To enhance the library, improving aesthetics and functionality. Brenner Library celebrates 60 years in 2027!

You Make THIS Possible.
Dear Friends of Quincy University,
Stepping into the role of Vice President for University Advancement this year has been both humbling and inspiring. In just a short time, I’ve seen the deep love our alumni, friends, and benefactors have for this place and the powerful difference your generosity makes for our students.
At Quincy University, our mission is to prepare students to lead lives of meaning, grounded in faith, service, and learning. That mission comes alive because people like you believe in it. You make it possible for students to step onto campus with hope and ambition and to leave with the knowledge, skills, and values to serve the world well.
This past year, your impact was extraordinary. Together, we raised $19,009,321 — the highest total in QU’s history and more than double last year’s record. This achievement reflects not only the generosity of leadership-level supporters, but also the thousands of alumni, friends, and community partners whose gifts of every amount are a powerful statement of belief in QU’s mission and future.
Your collective generosity is already hard at work across campus: funding scholarships, strengthening academic programs, enhancing campus spaces, supporting student athletes, and creating more experiences our students will carry with them into their lives and careers for many years to come.
Looking ahead, we have an exciting opportunity to build on this momentum — to connect with even more alumni, friends, and benefactors and to ensure every gift is transformed into greater opportunities for our students. Together, we can equip them with the best tools, resources, and support they need to shape a better future for all of us. Together, we are educating and forming the next generation of servant-leaders rooted in our Catholic, Franciscan mission and values.
Thank you for believing in Quincy University and for partnering with us in this important work. The future is bright, and together we can and will make it even brighter.
With gratitude,
Dan Queathem Vice President for University Advancement

“I wanted to stay close to home, and everyone was very welcoming at QU, so it made my decision easy.”
– Aftyn Bareis Barry, IL Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education, May
2025
Aftyn Bareis graduated from Quincy University this past May earning a B.S. in Early Childhood Education. She was a non-traditional QU student as a wife and mom of one son and two stepdaughters.
Aftyn is putting her degree to work this fall. She will be teaching third grade at Pikeland Community School in Pittsfield, Illinois.
“Receiving this scholarship gave me a sense of motivation and confidence, knowing that my efforts were paying off. It also relieved some of the financial pressure, allowing me to focus more on my education.”
Aftyn is grateful for the many great programs and professors at Quincy University and feels equipped and energized by her education to serve as an elementary teacher.
Aftyn Bareis is the recipient of the Dr. Robert E. Meyer Scholarship.

“We believe QU is unique, and we want to ensure its RELEVANCE for years to come. Elizabeth and I feel honored to support in any way possible.”
Tim Hoker ’00 credits his education and interaction with faculty and teammates as INSTRUMENTAL in preparing him for his career. “Those experiences continue to shape my career path even to this day.”
QU ALUMNI FOCUS
As Tim celebrates his 25th year as a QU alumnus, he recalls the standout professors in the business program. “They were about REAL-LIFE BUSINESS EXPERIENCES, not words in a textbook. I could relate to those stories which made it fun and exciting to go to class.”
Tim is still motivated by the encouragement of his freshman English professor, Dr. Schweda. Tim says, “He probably INFLUENCED my course in college more than anything else.” Early in the semester, Dr. Schweda challenged Tim to remember why he was at QU. “He reminded me that this is preparing me for my future, not just football practice.”
Professionally, Tim assists with operating two summer college baseball teams in Quincy and Springfield, Illinois. He is also a founding board member of The Matt Burke Foundation which was established in honor of Matt’s legacy as a great student-athlete, loyal friend, and strong leader. The foundation awards a graduating member of Matt’s alma mater high school with a SCHOLARSHIP to assist them in post-secondary education.
The Hokers have three daughters, Taylor, Grace and Payton. Their two youngest daughters play competitive softball, and as Tim explains, “That takes up a good amount of our free time.”
Tim Hoker ’00 and Elizabeth Ebersohl Hoker ’03
Tim and Elizabeth Hoker carry on the tradition of SUPPORTING QU and helping the university move forward.
