Quinceañera Celebration: Where did it come from? A lot of young Latinas have their Quinceañera simply because “it’s just what you do”- but Quinces are an old tradition. Like, very old. Back in the days of the Aztecs, over Six Hundred Years Ago in the heart of Mexico, the Aztecs considered fifteen year old girls to be ready for marriage- Yikes! That’s young! When the Spanish conquistadores invaded Mexico, their culture was mixed with the Native Aztecs, and the Quinceañeras started to become a coming of age celebration, instead of a “ready for marriage” celebration. Believe it or not, plenty of the tradition has survived since the days of the Aztecs! In the Aztec Quinceañera ceremony, there was:

• • • • •

A religious ceremony A community gathering of family and friends A speech given by parents in thanks and pride for their daughter A traditional dance and celebration Symbolic gifts

The tradition spread to different parts of Central and South America, leading young women both within and beyond Mexico to celebrate their fifteenth birthday. With immigration to the United States, over 400,000 Quinces take place in the United States every year. Each one has its own little twist, of course! Some Quinceañeras are in English, some are bilingual in English and Spanish. Some are lavish and elaborate, while others are intimate and close, with plenty of loving family. Whichever type of Quince you decide to have, now you know the origin of where Quinceañeras came from, and you will remember that it’s not only your big day, but a part in an ancient, beautiful tradition.

PARENTS BEWARE, understand the teenage language! Chat Speak, tech talk and emojis, for the modern parent!

Our form of communication has been changing, as we look to reduce the time of writing full words and replace them instead with quick symbols and emojis in order to communicate. Whilst this chat speak has been evolving for a while now, the take up of ‘lol’ and ‘omg’ by the majority of the population, has required the youth of today to seek more allusive short cuts to bamboozle their parents. So here are a few of the newer chat speaks appearing on the instant message and social media feeds of young people today and a few emojis translated for those still a little unsure.

Quinceañera Nutrition:

Eat well, plan ahead, look good, and feel great! Your quince is your chance to shine, stand out, look awesome, and make memories with friends and family. As you’ve probably heard before: You are what you eat! Not a lot of people know that eating well and making healthier choices are not only (obviously) good for you, but they can improve your appearance in a number of ways. For example, carrots and carrot-like vegetables can improve the appearance of your skin!

The face in the middle shows the woman’s natural colour. The face on the left shows the effect of sun tanning, while the face on the right shoes the effect of eating more carotenoids. Participants thought the carotenoid colour looked healthier. (Credit: Image courtesy of University on Nottingham) Drinking plenty of water also works miracles, and should be done on a regular basis whether you’re preparing for an event like your quince, or just having a lazy day around the house. Make sure you avoid “fad diets.” Having only one type of food, cutting out all carbs, or not eating enough calories for the day are not smart choices, and nobody should live with a diet like that forever. Plenty of Internet articles make it seem like eating calories is such a bad thing, when the truth is, your body needs a certain amount of calories in proper balance to stay healthy. Find healthy foods that you like, and eat them frequently. Remember to drink plenty of water. Have breakfast! Avoid “fad diets,” and remember to ask a professional such as a nutritionist, a doctor, or a trainer if you have any questions regarding what you should be eating to stay healthy. 24 QM.

You’ll look great, you’ll feel awesome, and most importantly, you’ll be in good health for your big day. Enjoy that delicious tres leches cake without any guilt!

Pokemon Go:

Be safe and have fun! So, you may have heard of a game for smartphones called “Pokemon Go,” and even if you don’t play it, you probably know that almost everyone does. In fact, there are more registered Pokemon players than users on Twitter! Wow!

When opening up the game, it warns: “Please be aware of your surroundings.” We can’t stress that enough- Nobody wants to end up lost in an unfamiliar neighborhood, find themselves too far from home, or bumping into poles trying to catch a new furry friend.

The game consists of walking around in real life and catching virtual monsters and interacting with other players. In order to have fun and do well, you’re going to have to move around. The fun part of the game is the augmented reality mode, which uses your phone’s camera to make it seem as though the adorable little monsters are standing right in front of you!

The best way to play is with friends- walking around in groups is safer, more fun, and actually gives you a higher chance of running into rare Pokemon! It’s a great way to get moving and active, walking around on a regular basis or even going for a run if you have the time. Go ahead and give it a try if you haven’t yet!

Catch ‘em all, and be safe!

M AKE UP & B EAUTY IT IS IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO LOOK IMPECCABLE from head to toe on your Quinceañera. Not only will you be the center of attention on that day, but they’ll also be tons of pictures of you throughout your celebration. That is why you need to make sure you prepare yourself with enough time and that you hire the right people to make up your hair and makeup team.

Hairstyle Options

YOUR QUINCEAÑERA HAIR TRIAL The same way you have cake tastings, and decoration samples, it is important for you to have a hair and make up trial to make sure that you and your glam squad are on the same page.

When choosing a hairstylist, be prepared to ask the following questions: •Are they licensed or certified professionals? •Do they specialize with Quinceañeras or brides?

•Do they come to you or do you go to them? •Can they do your damas hair, too? Can they do your makeup as well? •Do they have a portfolio? •Do they have a good reputation? •Are they creative and open minded? •How much time do they need to do your hair?

LA CORTE DE HONOR: Traditionally, the corte de honor is made up of 14 members: seven males and seven females. As the leader, you represent the 15th member of the group. Your chambelan de honor is the 16th member. However, not all Quinceañeras decide to go this traditional route. Some may decide to ditch the traditional sevencouples trend for a smaller group. Others may feel that an all females group is more for them, while others may want to have a corte de honor made up of only boys. The choice is completely up to you. But as with every decision, remember that there are pros and cons to everything. For example, you may decide that you

love the visual appeal that having a traditional, 14-member court will give your party—not to mention the fun and creative baile sorpresa you can choreograph with such a large group. If that’s the case, be aware that getting that many people organized is more difficult than dealing with a smaller group. Not only that, but including such a large group also requires that you incorporate each of them and possibly their families into your overall reception budget. Don’t worry. Before you stress over how to determine the right corte de honor for you, turn the page for a list of main things to consider.

Your Options:

our t will c r e b m e “14-mour party” give y

Chambelanes Only, Damas Only or both? PRO you will definitely stand out in a group surrounded by boys. They’ll be no doubt you’ll be the center of attention and that your waltz will look stunning.

CON they’ll be no girls around to help you choose your Quinceañera dress, you won’t go dama dress shopping with your friends and you might feel like the odd-person out on the limo ride surrounded by just boys. If you pick all damas: PRO going dress shopping and having tons of girl time with your friends will keep you calm and having fun as you plan your Quince.

Both:

PRO you can have the best of both worlds: the easygoing vibes of your guy friends and the sisterhood of your damas. Plus, your baile sorpresa will be tons of fun and hanging out hanging out with a combined group of friends will be healthy for everyone. CON having a combined group can be distracting for everyone involved. The girls and boys might be crushing over each other causing them to lose focus in the rehearsals. Some of them might even argue over with whom they were paired.

CON drama tends to takeover in a group of all girls, especially if they don’t get along. Although they may be all your friends, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re friends with each other. 38 QM.

The most IMPORTANT task after the quince that everyone forgets! Sending a letter like this isn’t only polite, some might say that it’s needed. Think of all the times you say “thank you”:

• When someone gives you a ride • When someone gives you a gift • When someone pays for something • When you receive something That last one is a big one. Anytime you receive something, like at your reception, you should say thank you!

Your guests make your party very special. They show love and support for your special day and bring gifts and money for you in celebration and thanks. What Quinceañeras sometimes forget to do is thank their guests in a personal, direct way. The best way to do this is by sending a card thanking them for their attendance, and whatever they may have left for you.

46 QM.

You can be creative and fun with your thank you cards, or you can be sweet and simple. It’s important to handwrite each card to your guests rather than using a template and changing the names. Thank them for attending, for any gifts they may have given you, and leave anything else you think you should. They will be happy that you thought of them and felt grateful for their presence- and you should!

5 WARNING

Signs that Mom needs a break from quinceanera planning!

A young Latinas 15th birthday is for sure the most anticipated birthday of her lifetime. A time that as Latinos we traditionally celebrate the “quinceanera” a beautiful, memorable time between parents and daughter… The reality is that the planning stage can also be a very stressful time, especially for mom whom typically takes the role of quinceanera planner. See below are warning signs that mom needs a break from quince planning.

Photo By : Luna Dreams Productio ns

1. Everything she talks about with everyone revolves around the quince party. 2. She has not socialized with friends, since the planning started. 3. Working more/getting a second job because she has spent too much money. 4. She is not herself anymore; she is irritable and cranky all the time. 5. You are not enjoying the planning time; instead you are constantly disagreeing. No worries, we have the following suggestions for a stress free quince planning. 1. Make a pact with your parents and set a side a time weekly and

daily as time gets closer to discuss the quince “to do’s”. 2. Encourage your parents to go out on date night at least once a week or for mom to have a “girls night” with friends. 3. Don’t be a “quincilla” be reasonable with the services and a product you select and make sure that it is affordable. Be grateful, say thank you and prepare a hot bubble bath for her. 4. Be organized and have a quinceanera planner with all of your notes, guest lists, contracts etc. Relief her with tasks that you can do, like communicating directly with your court with rehearsals, fittings, etc. 5. If you can afford one, a Quinceanera Planner is highly recommended This way your parents can also enjoy the party.

Plan ahead, be organized, be patient and understanding and remember everything your parents are doing is to make your dream quince party. Follow our suggestions and enjoy this very special time because it only happens ONCE in a lifetime.

Essential Steps, when planning your Quince

If you’re just starting to plan your Quinceañera, you may feel a little overwhelmed and worried about where to begin. Don’t stress! Make sure you have plenty of time until your party and start with the basics:

1. Pick a date!

15

One of the first things you need to decide before everything else is when your Quince will be. There are several things to consider when choosing a date, such as weather during that time of year, school and breaks, and the amount of time you give yourself to plan everything else.

2. Pick a place!

When you pick a venue for your Quince, you have plenty to considerBudget, convenience, and simply if it fits you and what you want. Maybe you want to borrow your Tia’s big yard, plus a tent. Maybe you dream of a simple, small hall with those closest to you, or a big elaborate ballroom holding everyone you know. Whichever it may be, be sure to explore all your options and work it all out with your parents, and don’t forget to discuss where the Quinceañera Mass will take place if you’re choosing to have one!

ns s Productio m a re D a n u L Photos By :

3. Think about your courtChambelanes y Damas!

Quinces traditionally have a choreographed dance take place between the Birthday Girl and friends/ family members. You definitely want to think about who you want to be in your court- both guys and girls, one or the other, or whatever you decide for yourself. This could be made up of close friends, primos, primas, siblings or anyone else you think may fit the role. Some friendships are born through being in a Quince court! This step is important because it will alter your guest list, size of your party.

4. Colors and themes.

Once you have a time, place, and a guest list, things will start coming together. You’ll begin to have a vision for your big night and have a better idea for what you want, as the time gets closer. Picking a color will make beginning to pick everything else easier, so it’ll be smart to pick it early on.

Remember to discuss everything with your parents first. A second opinion is always helpful, and you’ll need their permission for everything anyway!

Happy planning! 52 QM.

The Ceremony

A Quinceañera ceremony celebrates Hispanic traditions, culture and heritage. Most of the symbolic traditions of a quince are presented during the ceremony or religious mass, which is why the mass is considered the most important part of a Quinceañera. The symbolic traditions presented during the ceremony represent the transformation of a girl becoming a young woman before God and her family. The ceremony serves to reaffirm her faith through the renewal of the baptismal vows. Not all Quinceañeras have the same religious background. Therefore, it is common for each of them to include

a ceremony that is representative of their spiritual practices. Traditionally, the ceremony takes place at a church and is administered by a pastor or priest. Nowadays many officiants offer to conduct the ceremony at your home or reception hall. Once you decide on the place for your ceremony, schedule an appointment with the officiant to discuss any prerequisites and specific requirements. The officiant should be able to guide you as far as what to expect from the ceremony, how to prepare for it and how to make the most out of the experience.

Items of Symbolism The traditional gifts presented during the ceremony hold special meaning as they relate to you becoming a young woman. These gifts are represent loyalty and commitment to God, your family and yourself. The priest or pastor blesses all of the gifts during the ceremony. The padrinos of each of the gifts are responsible for taking them to the altar when the priest requests the ojects. Here is a list of the most common gifts presented by your padrinos during the ceremony:

The Holy Bible: This is the foundation of your faith and a manual that will guide your spiritual growth.

Tiara / Corona: Symbolizes that

you are a princess in the eyes of God.

Rosary/Cross Necklace: Meant to be worn as a reminder of your faith La Ultima Muñeca: Represents you leaving behind your childhood toys in preparation of new, mature responsibilities

54 QM.

Ceremony pillow/ Cojin: A kneeling

pillow for you to use during the ceremony.

A Ring/Anillo: To symbolize God’s unending love. Also meant to be worn as a reminder of your faith.

Earrings: Meant to be worn

as a reminder to keep your ears towards to the word of God.

Pair of High Heel Shoes: Used to wear during the reception in representation of your first pair of heels as a young woman.

Skin Care: Easy as 1, 2, 3. By: Jessica Bahena www.withjessica.com

Taking care of your skin is an important daily activity that every woman should do. Beautiful skin is something that translates in every culture and language. Although genetics and different skin types come in to play, making our skin less than perfect, here is a 1, 2, 3 process to make sure you keep your face clean!

1 Cleanse:

It’s important to cleanse your skin daily to remove dirt, oil, and dead skin flakes. Washing your skin also rids the skin of excess oil, which can prevent acne. To remove eye make-up, especially waterproof mascara, there are products specifically formulated for the eye area. But some gentle facial cleansers can effectively remove eye and facial makeup, as well as cleanse the skin. Remember, just because it looks and smells pretty doesn’t mean it’s the best choice. Pick something gentle and exfoliating.

2 tone:

Tone: A toner is an astringent liquid applied to the skin to reduce oiliness and improve its condition. It is extremely important not to get a harsh astringent that burns when you put it on. Toners can help even out skin tone, erase dark spots, and help skin that’s prone to breakouts. Simply apply a toner to a cotton pad, and apply to your face after you cleanse it.

3 moisturize:

A moisturizer makes sure that your face doesn’t feel tight or dry. Dry skin is the main cause of wrinkles. A light moisturizer can help give you a nice glow and keep your skin looking fresh.
