CHAMPIONSHIP Season Recap The 2010-11 edition of the Queen’s Gaels women’s rugby team will be making their first appearance at the CIS Women’s Rugby Championship and enter the 2010 Championship as the OUA Silver Medalists. They are coming off a 54-5 defeat at the hands of the No. 2 Guelph Gryphons in the OUA Championship. Queen’s appearance in the final was just the team’s second in its history having last played in the final during the 1995 season. The Gaels finished the regular season with a perfect 5-0 record winning four of those games by 22 points or more. Queen’s would rattle off September victories over Brock (24-0) and York (65-13) before edging McMaster for a narrow 15-14 victory to on Sept. 25. The Gaels would breeze through their final two games of the regular season against Trent (27-5) and Toronto (32-8). The perfect regular season was just Queen’s third in women’s team history having equalled the mark in 2005-06 (6-0) and 2003-04 (4-0). Queen’s would tally 163 points in the regular season ranking it as the second highest offence in Queen’s history behind the 2005-06 squad which tallied 187. In terms of defence, the Gaels were equally stingy allowing only 40 regular season points which ranks fourth lowest in school history. Andrea Wadsworth of Toronto once again led the Gaels in scoring securing 41 points including seven tries. Wadsworth would finish the regular season ranking fourth in OUA scoring. Veteran players Karlye Wong and Jocelyn Poirier (both of Ottawa) would contribute career-years on offence with Wong posting 30 points while Poirier scored 25. St. FX transfer, Ash Ward of Barrie, Ont., also was an impact player for Queen’s tallying three tries and was a defensive force. Ward finished her CIS career picking up an OUA All-Star nomination to go along with her four other previous Atlantic University Sport (AUS) All-Star nominations and CIS Rookie of the Year award in 2003. The Gaels claimed five OUA-All-Star honours with Wadsworth, Wong, Poirier, Ward and thirdyear standout, Susan Heald of Burlington, Ont. being honoured.

Lethbridge Pronghorns (Canada West champions: 4-0 regular season / 2-0 playoffs)

After knocking on the door with an appearance in the CIS final back in 2003 and a bronze medal in 2006, the Pronghorns have claimed the last three Monilex trophies, becoming only the second team in history to capture at least three straight CIS titles along with Alberta, which was crowned five consecutive times from 1999 to 2003. The ‘Horns were once again dominant this season in Canada West posting a perfect 6-0 overall mark and outscoring their opponents 253-48 en route to their fifth straight conference banner. They were tested by Alberta in the Canada West final however before prevailing 18-5 in front of over 1,000 home fans.

COACHING STAFF Beth Barz - Head Coach (6th - Head Coach) Barz is heading into her ninth season with the Gaels and her sixth as head coach. A Queen’s graduate and women’s rugby alumnus from the School of Physical Education, she has completed her NCCP Level Four Coaching credentials. Barz completed the National Team Apprenticeship Program earlier this year and is the head coach of the Rugby Canada U18 Development team. Barz has previously worked with Canada U20, Ontario U17 and at the high school where she teaches, Sydenham H.S. She continues to work with Rugby Canada and Rugby Ontario as a coach and a Master Learning Facilitator in delivering NCCP courses. In 2006, Beth was named CIS Coach of the Year.

Vicki Ward - Assistant Coach Ward is entering her fifth year coaching with the Gaels, after three outstanding seasons with the team as a player. She also played volleyball for Queen’s for the first two years of her undergraduate degree. Now a teacher at Ernestown Secondary School in the Limestone School Board, Ward teaches and coaches both rugby and volleyball successfully at the school.

Sean Dunleavy - Assistant Coach A Queen’s graduate from the Faculty of Education, Dunleavy is beginning his tenth season coaching with the women’s program. Dunleavy is also actively involved in the Rugby Ontario U17 program as a co-head coach and coaches the club and high school programs in Napanee, Ontario. He is an excellent motivator and brings out the best in the players he works with. Level Three certified in the NCCP system, Dunleavy also teaches and coaches several sports at Tamworth Elementary School, just northwest of Kingston.

Five Gaels named OUA All-Stars in women’s rugby HAMILTON, Ont. (October 28, 2010) – Jocelyn Poirier of Ottawa collected her fourth consecutive league all-star selection and was one of five Gaels named to the OUA Russell Division All-Star team on Thursday. Joining Poirier were teammates Andrea Wadsworth of Toronto, Susan Heald of Burlington, Ont., Ash Ward of Barrie, Ont., and Karlye Wong of Ottawa. Poirier’s selection is her fourth in her decorated five-year career at Queen’s. The fifth-year flanker scored 25 points on five tries for the Gaels in 2010.She is also a former CIS All-Canadian having claimed the honour in 2008-09. Wong’s selection on the Russell Division All-Star team is her third since joining the rugby squad from women’s volleyball. Wong has tallied six tries and 30 points this year. Wadsworth and Heald both attained their second selection to an OUA All-Star team having both been named to last year’s squad along with Poirier and Wong. Wadsworth finished fourth in OUA

scoring with 41 points including seven tries and three conversions. Heald recorded 20 points for the Gaels on the strength of four tries, including three in one game. Ward earns her first nomination to the OUA All-Star team after transferring from the St.FX X-Women. She is a former CIS rookie of the year and won the national title with the X-Women in 2006. Ward scored 15 points for the Gaels in 2010-11. Ward is also the younger sister of assistant coach Vicki Ward who was a three-time OUA All-Star with the Gaels from 2003-2006. The five Gaels will be looking to lead Queen’s on Saturday (Oct. 30) to their first OUA Women’s Rugby Championship in team history. The game, which is set for 12:00pm at Kingston Field, will see the undefeated Gaels battle the undefeated Guelph Gryphons. The Gaels had placed five members on an OUA all-star squad only one other time in their history which occurred during the 2005-06 season. Last year, Queen’s had four members earn the OUA Russell Divison All-Star status.

(October 23, 2010) – The No. 7 Queen’s Gaels have advanced to the OUA Championship with a 15-8 OUA semifinal win over the No. 9 Waterloo Warriors in women’s rugby.

KINGSTON, Ont. (October 16, 2010) - Toronto’s Andrea Wadsworth got the No. 7 Queen’s Gaels off to a quick start as they won their OUA Quarter-final matchup against the Toronto Varsity Blues by a 44-5 score.

KINGSTON, Ont. (October 8, 2010) – Andrea Wadsworth of Toronto, recorded three tries en route to a 32-8 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues in OUA women’s rugby action on Friday afternoon at Kingston Field.

Queen’s will host the OUA Championship next Saturday against the Guelph Gryphons at Kingston Field with kickoff scheduled for 12:00pm. Guelph trampled McMaster 39-0 in the other OUA semifinal to qualify for the championship.

Wadsworth’s try in the early stages of the first half set the tone for what would be an dominant Gaels win. Queen’s jumped out to a 12-0 lead before Toronto found some momentum and took a chunk out of the Queen’s lead with a try of their own from Hilda Ulloa of Kitchener, Ont. However, that would be Toronto’s lone try of the game and it was all Queen’s for the rest of the contest.

The win pushed the Gaels record to a perfect 5-0 in their final regular season game. It also marks the first time since 2005 the Gaels have finished the regular season undefeated.

The win also guarantees Queen’s a berth in the CIS Championship held November 4 – 7 in Peterborough, Ont. The appearance in the CIS Championship is the Gaels first since rugby became a CIS sport in 1998. Ash Ward of Barrie, Ont., and Karlye Wong of Ottawa posted a try each while Annika Rinas of Oakville, Ont., contributed five points on a conversion and penalty goal in the semifinal win. Sam Eyles of Erin, Ont., scored Waterloo’s only try in the match while Valerie Bigelow of Thornhill, Ont. had a penalty goal. Queen’s held a slim 10-8 advantage before adding a try late in the game to secure the win. The win marks the first time since 1995 the Gaels have qualified to play in the OUA Championship final.

The Gaels scored another two tries before the end of the first half, with Susan Heald (Burlington, Ont.) putting in the first of her two tries just before halftime. The score was 22-5 with Queen’s in the lead at halftime. The second half saw more of the same as Queen’s scored four unanswered tries, while Bronwyn Corrigan (Waterloo, Ont.) added a convert to round out the Gaels 44 point effort. The Gaels scorers on the day included the aforementioned Wadsworth and Heald (who scored two). Others who scored tries included Samantha Trinier (Toronto), Ashley Ward (Barrie, Ont.), Sarah Pathak (Toronto), Jocelyn Poirier (Ottawa), and Marin Macleod (Pictou Co., N.S.). Corrigan and Annika Rinas (Oakville, Ont.) contributed two points each on converts. The Gaels will continue their playoff run next weekend in the OUA Semifinal. Queen’s will host the Waterloo Warriors at Kingston Field.

Toronto responded with a penalty goal by Lee-Anne Corrigan of Phelpston, Ont., to close the half 15-3 in favour of the Gaels. Poirier and Wadsworth would post back-toback tries in the second half with Kranenberg converting on Porier’s try making the score 27-3. Corrigan would notch Toronto’s only try in the 35th minute before Trinier closed the scoring at 32-8 in favour of Queeen’s. The Gaels had already clinched first place in the OUA Russell Division and will host an OUA Quarterfinal playoff game against either Toronto or Trent on October 16 at 3:00pm on Kingston Field. Queen’s will face Trent if they can get past York in tonight’s matchup (7:00pm @ York) or if York wins the Gaels will battle Toronto with the Lions leapfrogging the Varsity Blues in the OUA Standings. (September 25, 2010) – Sarah Pathak of Toronto scored with five minutes remaining to help the No. 8 Queen’s Gaels defeat the No. 7 McMaster Marauders 15-14 in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) women’s rugby on Saturday. The win moves Queen’s into sole possession of first place in the OUA Russell Division at 3-0 and drops McMaster to second place at 2-1. Guelph is the only other 3-0 team in the OUA holding a two point advantage on Waterloo in the OUA Shiels Division. McMaster held a 14-10 advantage heading into the final half, but Queen’s defense held the Marauders at bay until Pathak was able to score. “Our defense was spectacular today,” said Queen’s head coach Beth Barz. “We caused a lot of turnovers which was key to the victory.” Jocelyn Poirier of Carp, Ont. put the Gaels on the board first while Karlye Wong of Ottawa added her third try of the season just before the half. Allison Morris of Stoney Cree, Ont., and Hannah Braithwaite of Kingston, Ont., recorded tries for McMaster while Rebecca Delaney of Caledon, Ont., registered a convert. The win marked the first time the Gaels had defeated McMaster in five meetings dating back to October 4 2003. In that game, Queen’s dumped the Marauders 33-0. Queen’s will battle Trent University next Friday in Peterborough, Ont. (7:30pm) before returning home to close the regular season against Toronto on October 8.

KINGSTON, ONT. (September 18, 2010) Susan Heald of Burlington, Ont. scored 15 points as the No. 10 nationally ranked Queen’s Gaels trampled the York Lions 6513. Heald racked up her 15 points on three tries.

The game extended Queen’s winning streak against York as the Gaels have not dropped a game to the Lions in ten seasons. The Gaels will continue their season next week against the No. 8 McMaster Marauders in Hamilton and will look to improve to 3-0 in league play.

On Sports Day In Canada hosted in Kingston – the Gaels controlled the matchup from the start. Led by Heald, the Gaels took the victory on the strength of a great team effort and many big performances.
