The Gaels entered the 2018-19 campaign with high hopes as they ranked 10th in the nation which was their first national ranking since the 2007-08 season. The Gaels finished the season with a 12-11 record building off the 11-12 finish from last season. The Gaels clinched their fourth consecutive playoff appearance which was highlighted by an upset win over No.6 Ottawa at the ARC. Tanner Graham and Jaz Bains combined for 49 points as they outworked the Gee-Gees in a 78-76 overtime victory. The regular season also saw Tanner Graham move into Queen’s top five all-time scorers with 1311 points. Graham would flex that scoring ability in the most clutch of circumstances in the first round of the OUA playoffs as the Gaels traveled to Sudbury to take on the Laurentian Voyageurs. With the Gaels trailing 72-71 in the final seconds, Graham nailed a go-ahead bucket to put in front for good. The shocking win sent the Gaels to the OUA quarterfinals where they would fall to the eventual U SPORTS champion Carleton Ravens. Tanner Graham took home the U SPORTS and OUA Ken Shields Award for Student-Athlete Community Service as he was a heavy contributor on and off the court. He was also named as a OUA Second Team All-Star while Jaz Bains was recognized as a Third Team All-Star.

SEASON RECAP The Gaels began their season on a tear winning six of their first seven games climbing the OUA East standings. However, in the midway point of the season the Gaels would go on a bit of lull before rebounding at season’s end winning six of their last seven games. With the competition in the OUA East being as tough as it’s ever been the Gaels were able to come away with some important victories including wins over Ryerson and Carleton who ranked above them in the standings. The win over No.8 Carleton came on Senior Night and was led by Marianne Alarie’s 21 points and Sophie de Goede’s 21 rebounds. The Gaels were then able to grow their momentum in the final game of the regular season with a 74-70 win at Ryerson where Alarie put in a gamehigh 28 points. The Gaels clinched a home playoff game with a 15-8 record but fell to the York Lions in the first round of the OUA playoffs. Marianne Alarie capped off a tremendous Gaels’ career with OUA Second Team All-Star honours.

The Gaels began their season at home sweeping the top five placing’s of the Queen’s Invitational. Mitchell de Lange came away with the individual win for the Tricolour. The following weekend, they headed out to Western and grabbed a third place team finish once again led by de Lange who finished third overall. From there the Gaels headed south of the border to the Paul Brown Run at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania finishing first as a team in the men’s 8k race in the brown division.

At the OUA Championship in London, the men entered the competition ranked No.8 in the U SPORTS rankings. Despite three OUA teams ahead of them in those rankings, the Gaels finished second overall and secured an OUA silver medal. De Lange and Mitchell Kirby were named OUA First Team All-Stars, Matthew Flood was named a Second Team All-Star and Ruben Sansom won Rookie of the Year.

Next up was the U SPORTS Championship hosted by Queen’s and held at Fort Henry’s hill. The men finished fifth overall but did not go home empty handed in front of their hometown crowd. De Lange was the top Gaels finisher (12th) and was named a Second Team All-Canadian. Meanwhile, Sansom was the top rookie finisher earning him U SPORTS Rookie of the Year honours.

The Gaels entered the 2018 season ranked first in the nation and flexed their muscles early with a win at the Queen’s Invitational. Brogan and Branna MacDougall finished first and second with Taylor Sills and Makenna Fitzgerald right behind them in 3rd and 4th. From there the Gaels finished second in the Western Invitational and a 7th place finish in the gold division at the Paul Brown Run at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. Brogan placed first individually taking down some of the top competition the NCAA had to offer. After a seventh place finish at McMaster’s Bayfront Open the Gaels prepared for the OUA Championship. The Gaels earned their second straight OUA Championship banner thanks to a 1-2 finish from Brogan and Branna. Right behind them in fourth was Fitzgerald and Kara Blair in seventh as all four runners were named to the OUA First Team All-Star list. With her win Brogan won the OUA MVP and OUA Rookie of the Year making it back-to-back OUA MVP’s for the MacDougall sisters. The U SPORTS Championship was hosted by Queen’s and held at Fort Henry’s hill. The Gaels still held on to the No.1 ranking in the nation but an upset by Laval forced the Gaels to their second consecutive silver medal. Brogan won the individual gold medal finishing nearly 14 seconds of second place earning her U SPORTS Athlete of the Year, Rookie of the Year and First Team All-Canadian honours. With their 9th and 13th place finishes, Branna and Fitzgerald were named as U SPORTS Second Team All-Canadians.

Queen’s began their season on the right foot with a 42-21 win at York. The win was significant for former head coach Pat Sheahan who recorded his 100th career win with the program joining Frank Tindall and Doug Hargreaves as the only Gaels’ coaches to do so. QB Nate Hobbs found three different receivers for touchdowns while rushing in a score of his own. Defence played a role as well as Will Bannatyne was named as the OUA Defensive Player of the Week following a key fumble recovery that halted York’s momentum when the game was close. The Gaels then hosted their home opener at Richardson Stadium but fell to the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks 44-18. However, with the Toronto Varsity Blues next on the schedule the team needed to forget about their first loss. The next week at Richardson Stadium the Gaels did exactly that as they picked up a dominant 43-7 victory in front of their home crowd. Nathan Langley kicked off the game with a bang as he returned the opening kickoff 110-yards for a touchdown, which earned him OUA Special Teams Player of the Week honours. Nate Hobbs had a passing touchdown and two rushing scores while Chris Osei-Kusi and Benjamin Arhen both had over 100 yards receiving. The following week, the Gaels traveled to Ottawa lost a heartbreaking 42-39 game to the Carleton Ravens in overtime. The Gaels were able to overcome a 19-point deficit in the final quarter but eventually fell to 2-2 on the season. Queen’s was once again able to bounce back from a tough loss as they won a 33-32 thriller at Guelph. After building a 33-7 lead, the Gaels slowly allowed the Gryphons to get back into the game. In the final seconds Gryphons’ kicker Gabe Ferraro had a chance to win the game for his squad however his kick sailed wide left as the Gaels escaped with a narrow victory.

Returning home, the Gaels carried their momentum into a rivalry matchup against the Western Mustangs. With the defence holding the high-powered Mustangs’ offence in check, the Gaels built a 20-11 lead after three quarters. But the defending Vanier Cup Champions eventually pushed their way back and a touchdown with just over two minutes remaining spoiled the Gaels’ upset hopes in a 26-23 final. With playoff hopes still in reach with a 3-3 record, the Gaels dropped their next two matchups 27-24 in McMaster and 2722 against the Ottawa Gee-Gees at Richardson Stadium. The losses ended the Tricolour’s season and prevented a second consecutive OUA Playoff appearance. Nate Hobbs finished his Gaels’ career with 55 passing touchdowns, which is fourth in Queen’s history. He finished season 2nd in the OUA with 2664 passing yards but more impressively ranked 2nd in the OUA with 9 rushing touchdowns. Matteo Del Brocco, Cam Lawson and Nick Liberatore were named OUA All-Stars, while rookie RB Rasheed Tucker was named as an OUA All-Rookie.

It was an historic season for the Queen’s men’s hockey program. The Gaels finished out the OUA season with an 18-10-0 record and captain Spencer Abraham surpassed the Queen’s record for points by a defenceman in a career in his final regular season game.

In the OUA playoffs the Gaels began to hit their stride, sweeping Concordia in an opening round matchup and then taking down the top-seed in the East Ottawa. Queen’s then turned the tables on Carleton as well and finished out the series with a 2-0 sweep advancing back to the Queen’s Cup for the first time since 2017 and hosting the championship for the first time since their last title in 1981.

In the OUA championship Queen’s Cup the Gaels once again proved to be too much for their opponent securing a 4-1 win to claim their seventh Queen’s Cup title and first since 1981. Queen’s finished with numerous conference honours with Slater Doggett leading the way as OUA East MVP and Randy Gregg recipient while Spencer Abraham and rookie goaltender Justin Fazio joined Doggett as OUA all-stars. The Gaels entered the University Cup as the No.3 seed and lost to StFX to finish fifth.

The Gaels began their season with a win on home ice over the Laurentian Voyageurs. But after two consecutive losses, Makenzy Arsenault led the Gaels to five straight victories as she filled in for an injured Stephanie Pascal. At the end of the first half of the season, the Gaels would head into the winter break with an 8-5 record and with Pascal back in the mix they had much work to do to climb the OUA standings. After trading wins and losses to begin the 2019 part of their campaign the Gaels would pick up a weekend sweep over Western and Windsor at the Memorial Centre which sparked some momentum heading into the final stretch of the regular season. The final night of the regular season saw Hailey Wilson net two goals in a 2-1 victory at Brock which secured the Gaels the fourth seed and a date with the Ryerson Rams in the first round of the playoffs. The Gaels would take game one of that series thanks to a lastminute goal from Alex Maw, which handed the Gaels a 3-2 victory on home ice. From there, the Gaels traveled to Toronto for game two. The Gaels trailed 1-0 with the late stages of the third period approaching, but Nicole Posesorski managed to tie things up with five minutes to go which led to an eventual overtime. However, the Rams were able to come away with a 2-1 double overtime victory forcing a series-deciding game three. This game would also require overtime and another Rams’ goal ended the series and the Gaels’ season.

The Gaels got their first taste of OUA action as they competed in the Head of the Trent in Peterborough, Ont. Alex Bernst and Gavin Stone secured first and second respectively in the men’s single, while Stone and Michael Bryenton placed first in the men’s double. From there the Gaels headed to the Brock Invitational as a warm-up for the upcoming OUA Championship. The men took home gold in three events, the lightweight 2- of Nicholas Grubic and Daniel Stret lightweight 2x of Alexander Bernst and Grubic and Bernst himself in the lightweight 1x. At the OUA Championships in St. Catharines, Ont. the Gaels took home four gold medals, one silver and finished third place team finish. The men’s lightweight 4+ of Michael Wightman, Nicholas Grubic, Evan Notley, Alex Bernst and Daniel Stret earned a gold medal with their run, while Grubic and Bernst earned gold in their lightweight double. Gavin Stone and Michael Bryenton won the men’s double gold medal, while Stone capped off a championship day with the men’s single gold medal. Stone was named the OUA Male Athlete of the Year with his performance. At the Canadian University Rowing Championship in St. Catharines, Ont., Queen’s would earn three more gold medals and a silver. The team that won the OUA’s lightweight 4+ came away with a dominant victory in their run at the CURC, while Grubic and Bernst also won gold in the lightweight double. Gavin Stone built off his momentum from the OUA Championships as he won the gold medal in the men’s single, while Bernst took silver in the lightweight single. Bernst was named national rower of the year. WOMEN Louise Munro was the top Gaels’ finisher at the season opening Head of the Trent in Peterborough, Ont. She placed second in the women’s championship single. Meanwhile, Greta Chase and Rebecca Hisey had top-five finishes in the lightweight single. At the Brock Invitational, the team of Cassidy Deane, Paige Adams, Charlotte Deacon, Katherine Walker and Megan Millier Stellato took gold in the women’s heavyweight 4. Deane and Adams also took gold in the women’s double. At the OUA Championships in St. Catharines, Ont. the Gaels earned five gold medals and one silver on their way to a second place team finish. Much like at the Brock Invitational, the Gaels heavyweight 4 team won gold, while Jane Carlton and Greta Chase won their lightweight double event. Paige Adams and Cassidy Deane won the women’s 2- as Louise Munro and Katherine Walker grabbed gold in the women’s 2x. Louise Munro capped the day off with a gold in the women’s single. At the Canadian University Rowing Championship in St. Catharines, Ont., the Gaels brought back one gold and two bronze medals back to Kingston. Katherine Walker earned bronze in the women’s lightweight single and the team of Paige Adams and Cassidy Deane won bronze in the women’s double. Louise Munro once again came out on top of the women’s single bringing home the lone gold medal on the women’s side.

Coming off an undefeated season as Turner Trophy champions, the Gaels lived up to their lofty expectations and swept the OUA season once again. The Gaels kicked off their season with a dominant 74-6 win over the Waterloo Warriors at Nixon Field, which set the tone for the remainder of the season. They would finish 8-0 and earn home field advantage for the entirety of the OUA playoffs. First, Waterloo returned to Nixon Field for the OUA semi-final and the Gaels cruised to a 59-16 in front of their home crowd. This set up another Turner Trophy clash with the Guelph Gryphons for the fifth consecutive season. Right from the start there was no chance that the Gaels were going to let the title from their grasp as they jumped out to a quick lead, eventually taking a 31-0 advantage into halftime. Putting on a show for their fans the Gaels won their 24th Turner Trophy capping off their second consecutive undefeated OUA campaign. Trevor Helgason was named the man of the match as the Gaels lifted another banner. OUA Coach of the Year David Butcher then led his squad to their first appearance at the Canadian University Rugby Championship hosted in Victoria, B.C. The Gaels went 2-0 in their pool taking down UNB as well as last year’s finalists Victoria in a close 15-8 victory. This set up a battle with the UBC Thunderbirds for the national championship. The Gaels were able to jump out in front 7-0 over the defending champions. However, the Thunderbirds pushed back and won the title leaving the Gaels with their first loss in two years and a national silver medal.

The Gaels came into the 2018 season ranked fourth in the nation and looking to return to the U SPORTS National Championship for a second consecutive year. They began their OUA season with a dominant 68-10 victory at Western which saw eight different Gaels lay down trys. Up next they battled the defending OUA champion Guelph Gryphons at Nixon Field. After trailing 29-5 at the half, the Gaels were able to battle their way back and fall just short in a 39-34 final. From there, the Gaels picked up back-to-back wins at McMaster and at home versus York to end their regular season with a 3-1 record and the second seed heading into playoffs. After a first round bye, the Gaels hosted McMaster at Nixon Field in a close affair. After building a 29-17 lead in the late stages of the second half, the Marauders attempted to close the gap. However, the resilient Gaels stood their ground and picked up a 29-24 win led by Nadia Popov’s 14 points. This set up a rematch with the Guelph Gryphons in the OUA Championship game at Guelph. However, despite their best efforts the Gaels fell 39-14 and claimed an OUA silver medal and a berth to nationals once again. Heading to nationals, the No.6 Gaels dropped their opening game to St. Francis Xavier meaning the Gaels would have to make a consolation bracket run. They did so taking down the Calgary Dinos 29-10 and setting up a consolation final against Victoria. The Gaels fell in a hard fought 24-15 final ending their season after an incredible run.

Queen’s began their season on a tear picking up wins in four of their first five games. They outscored their opponents 16-3 over this stretch, which included road wins at UOIT and Trent as well as Richardson Stadium victories over Toronto and RMC. However, the Gaels stumbled through the following section of their schedule going 1-4-1 in their next six games. This stretch effectively took them out of the OUA East division race but with playoff seeding still in play the Gaels would end the season on a high note. They picked up wins in three of their final four games, which included a win over Nipissing to secure the fourth seed in the OUA East and a home playoff game in the opening round. The Gaels also secured their highest season point total in three seasons with 28.

In the playoffs, the Gaels met the Nipissing Lakers on a cold night at Richardson Stadium. With temperatures low, offences were held in check however, Nipissing was able to find the net in the 33rd minute. From there the Gaels weren’t able to respond as their season came to an end.

The Gaels kicked off their season No.5 in the national ranking looking to contend in a very tough OUA East division. They opened with two wins at home which included a hat trick from Jenny Wolever in a 4-2 win over Nipissing. From there the Gaels went 3-2-0 with tough losses over UOIT and the eventual U SPORTS Champions Ottawa Gee-Gees. Queen’s would go 3-5-1 over the final stretch of the regular season which included a revenge win over UOIT at Richardson Stadium. They were able to secure the second seed in the OUA East and clinched a bye through the first round of the OUA playoffs. With 13 goals, Wolever was honoured as the OUA East MVP. Her goal scoring ability ranked second in the OUA as well as second in the nation. In the playoffs, the Gaels hosted the fourth seed Nipissing Lakers at Richardson in the OUA Quarter-final. An offensive fury right out of the gates propelled the Gaels to a 5-1 win on their final game at home. Wolever recorded her second hat trick of the season, once again against Nipissing to lead the Gaels to another OUA Final Four appearance.

For a third year in a row, the Gaels drew the Western Mustangs in the OUA semi-final. Both teams were even 1-1 after regulation time and in extra time the Gaels struck first. However, two consecutive goals before the final whistle ended the Gaels hopes of a gold medal. The Gaels dropped the bronze medal game 3-0 to McMaster ending their season.

SEASON RECAP
The first season as head coach of the men’s volleyball program at Queen’s for Gabriel deGroot was a memorable one. The Gaels dropped a tough match to Windsor in his home debut and after the first two weeks of the season were sitting at 2-2 with a date at the reigning OUA champion and then No.1 nationally ranked Marauders next on the schedule. The Gaels finished off a five-set thriller 15-13 to complete the upset and set the course for the remainder of their season. Queen’s nearly ran the table the rest of the way, finishing 13-1 after their 2-2 start to the season.

In the OUA playoffs the Gaels hosted the Final Four after defeating Guelph in a thrilling five-set quarterfinal. After taking down Toronto in the semifinal, Queen’s ended McMaster’s run of six straight titles with a five set win to claim their first OUA banner since 2012.

Queen’s also sported five OUA All-Stars with Zane Grossinger joining Hutcheson on the first team, Adam Boljkovac teaming up with Dylan Hunt on the second-team and Shane Gabel receiving All-Rookie honours. At U SPORTS, the Gaels dropped a tough quarter-final before bouncing back with wins over McMaster and Mount Royal to finish fifth.

SEASON RECAP
In their second season under head coach Ryan Ratushniak the Gaels clinched their fifth consecutive OUA playoff appearance with their second straight 13-6 record. The Gaels had a rough start to their season dropping four of their first six games. However, a win at home against York sparked a four-game win streak to get the Gaels back to form. After the winter break the Gaels would start 2019 with six consecutive victories heading straight into the OUA playoffs. Those victories allowed the Gaels to safely secure the third seed in the OUA East. In the OUA playoffs, the Gaels headed to London to take on the Western Mustangs in the quarterfinals for the third consecutive season. After taking the opening set, the Gaels would drop the next three to end their season. The Gaels took home some impressive OUA accolades as Caroline Livingston was awarded the OUA East Award of Merit for her work on the court, classroom and in the community. She joined Sierra Hardy on the OUA First Team All-Star list, meanwhile Julia Wiercigroch was named a Second Team All-Star and Arielle Palermo was named to the All-Rookie team.

In its seventh year, the Varsity Leadership Council (VLC) continued working towards connecting Queen’s athletes with the Kingston community through many initiatives. In September, the VLC donated 643 pounds of food to Partner’s in Mission Food Bank at the Athlete Welcome Back BBQ. A generous amount of $39,226 was raised for the Run for the Cure, with the Men’s rugby team leading the way with raising over $30,000 of the final amount. In December the VLC coordinated the annual Martha’s Table Holiday baskets. The student-athletes teamed up to donate 35 food baskets and over 600 dollars to Martha’s Table, a nonprofit organization that provides nutritious meals for those in need. Over the year the VLC hosted two Super Saturdays which supported the Autism Mentorship program and created awareness for mental health initiatives with Bell Let’s Talk day and jack.org. The VLC had a great time getting to meet some aspiring Gaels on Pathways to Education Day. Pathways to Education Day aims to support first generation students of sport and personal development. The day consisted of playing games, hanging out, and listening to some amazing speakers talk about their experiences with adversity, hard work, and believing in one’s self.

Team Representative: Each team is encouraged to have one representative voice on the council. Returning athletes in any year are eligible for the position. If interested, contact vlcathlete@gogaelsgo.com. Athlete: All athletes are encouraged to participate in any of the VLC’s programs and initiatives that are held throughout the year. Ask your team rep or check out our Facebook page to stay updated on important dates.

The VLC also had the opportunity to participate in Motionball as well as Heart and Stroke Canada fundraisers. Lastly, the VLC was nominated for the Association of Fundraising Professionals, South Eastern Ontario Chapter Award for Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy for dedicating their time to volunteering efforts in the Kingston community.
