What subjects will my daughter be studying in Year 7?
All pupils follow a broad curriculum including English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, French, a second modern foreign language, PTE (Philosophy, Theology & Ethics), Latin and Classical Civilisation, Computer Science, Art, Music, Drama, Dance, PE, PSHE and Thrive (Resilience, College History, Kindness, Enterprise, Life Skills and Politics).
In Years 8 and 9, they choose another language to study as their second modern language.
What is your approach to homework?
Homework is set to give pupils the opportunity to practise and develop work completed in the classroom and to build their skills as independent learners. One hour of homework is usually set per evening in Years 7 and 8, following a homework timetable which pupils will receive during their first week at the College. Homework tasks will be set on the College’s online Firefly platform, so parents are able to monitor their daughter’s homework more easily.
What are the school hours and what is the procedure for drop-off and pick-up?
Pupils can arrive at school between 7:30am and 8:30am and registration is 8:40am. Students should arrive by 8:30am at the latest to ensure that they have time to prepare their books, check their timetables, organise their bags, retrieve items from their lockers and settle in before the day begins. The school day ends at 4:05pm however pupils can stay in the College until 5:30pm in the Blue Library where they will be supervised (or otherwise at a supervised after school club, rehearsal or fixture).
What is the school’s policy on mobile phones?
Every student in C3 to II Junior is provided with a Yondr pouch, where they securely store their phones. The pouches remain locked throughout the day and are only unlocked at the end of the school day. Pupils in the Senior College (Sixth Form) may keep their phones with them, but they should not be seen or heard during lessons and only be used in the Senior College area.
What sort of co-curricular clubs do you offer?
We offer a diverse co-curricular programme with a huge variety of clubs primarily held during lunchtime. These include clubs such as debating, Cheer, robotics, art, to name a few and provide students with opportunities to explore their interests and develop new skills.
Are there any specific uniform requirements?
Our school uniform is provided by Stevensons, and parents order uniform items online through their website. Further information about Stevensons and the official school uniform list can be found on our website.
What do I do if my daughter is unwell?
If pupils are absent, parents are asked to email absence@qcl.org.uk before 8:30am on the morning of absence. Parents are reminded that no child is allowed to be absent from school, except through illness, without obtaining permission beforehand from the Principal. This is a legal requirement. Each absence request will be considered on its merits and requests for absence on religious grounds will always be granted.
How do you challenge your more able students, and when are pupils grouped by ability?
Pupils are generally not set in Maths until Year 8, however, if we believe it would benefit their educational development, we may introduce setting earlier. English and other languages are typically set from Year 10 onwards. Higher-attaining students are challenged through stretch tasks, enrichment programmes, and extension opportunities.
How do you support the transition from primary school to senior school?
We run a detailed transition program, including visits to feeder schools, Year 6 induction days, and parent information evenings. Each Year 7 (Class 3) student is paired with an older buddy to help them settle in.
What are the lunches like? Can my daughter bring in a packed lunch?
A wide variety of nutritious and delicious lunch options are available daily in the dining hall. These include a choice of hot meals, a soup and salad bar, as well as a selection of sandwiches and fruit. Parents can access the weekly menu the College website. Lunch is paid for on a card system by pupils each day and the overall termly cost of what they purchase will be charged for on the fees invoice at the end of the term. It is also possible for pupils to bring in a packed lunch. Only pupils in the Senior College are allowed to leave the College at lunchtime; they are required to sign out and back in again.
