Leaders we admire Leaders who we admire may be involved in our everyday lives, or we may admire them from a distance. Regardless, they stand out – and make a difference. They inspire us, motivating us to grow personally, to stand up for what is important, to radiate our unique qualities more, and use our talents for good.

In Be The Change 2021, we have reflected on what makes a leader. We have discussed qualities we notice in leaders, their character and style, and reflected on what is needed for leaders to be effective.

We have noticed leaders in our world, both close and at a distance, who stand out. The profiles that follow are the leaders that we admire, the stories about their lives, and we hope that they will inspire and encourage you personally to be all you can be.

BILL GATES A LEADER WE ADMIRE Bill Gates The world would be a different place without the presence of this American business magnate, software developer, investor, author, and philanthropist, Bill Gates. At a very young age, Gates was set to make a mark out in the world.

Born into a family of four, in America on the 28th of October, 1955 was William (Bill) Henry Gates III. He began programming at a young age and by 13 years old Gates had completed his first software programme. In

high school, he formed group of programmers who computerized their school’s payroll system and also founded a company that sold trafficcounting systems to local governments called Traf-O-Data. In 1975, sophomore at Harvard University, Gates developed a successful software for the first microcomputers with the help of his childhood friend, Paul Allen. In junior year Gates left Harvard but went on with Allen to create the world-famous computer software, Microsoft.

Bill Gates has been one of the wealthiest men in the world for decades and has given over $50 billion to charities tackling the greatest inequities in our world. From poverty to health, to education, his foundation’s areas of focus offer the opportunity to dramatically improve the quality of life for billions of people in over more than 130 countries.

Chlöe Swarbrick

"How many world leaders, for how many decades have seen and known what is coming but have decided that it is more politically expedient to keep it behind closed doors? My generation and the generations after me do not have that luxury."

While working as a journalist, Chlöe Swarbrick was involved with interviewing electoral candidates for the Mayorship of Auckland. When interviewing candidates, she found their motives uninspiring and that, during the last election, only 34% of the electorate had actually voted. That's when the young entrepreneur decided to run for Mayor of Auckland. She didn't win - coming in 3rd place, almost 160,000 votes behind the winner.

She did, however, put herself on the political radar. She joined the Green Party the following year, joining Parliament (as a List MP) as the youngest MP since Marilyn Waring. In 2020, she ran for (and won) the Auckland Central Electorate seat, and remains there to this day.

Chlöe Swarbrick is known for fighting for drug reform, especially advocating for treating the issue as a medical one, but she is also known for fighting for issues such as housing, student rights, transport, the environment and small businesses. This has made her very popular in the Auckland Central electorate, where these issues are very prominent in everyday life, especially housing. Chlöe is also popular for her unique method of campaigning and running her electorate, which involves being very involved with the community she is fighting for.

Chlöe Swarbrick Born 1994 Entrepreneur, MP

Emma Watson was born in Paris, France on the 15th April 1990. She moved to Oxford, England when she was 5, where she went to the Stage Coach Theatre Arts school. At age 9, she auditioned for Harry Potter, gaining the role of Hermione Granger which she maintained until she was 21.

In Spetember on 2014, she gave a speech at the UN headquarters, launching her HeForShe campaign, the aim of which was to encourage more men to become feminists. She is an inspiring feminist who campains for equality for all.

During her teen years she becasme increasingly interested in fashion, and in 2009, she began working alongside People Tree, a fair trade clothes brand.

Also in 2009, she enrolled in Brown University, Rhode Island, where she graduated in 2014 with and Enlgish degree. In that same year, she became a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador.

Why Emma Watson is our role model Emma Watson is a 31 year old actress and role model to young girls. Emma Watson is our role model because she believes everyone should be equal.

Emma Watsons parents divorced when she was 5, she lived with her mother and brother in Oxfordshire, England. She later attended the stagecoach theatre arts school where she studied, singing, acting and dancing.

Emma is mostly known for her role as Hermione Granger in the movie series 'Harry Potter' but Emma is also an advocate for human rights and feminism issues. She also works with charities.

Emma is extremely passionate about knowledge and philantropy. Emma's qualities are fighting for womans rights, she is persistent and determined.

Plimmerton native - kindness enthusiast - aspiring student turned leader Sometimes in life you meet people who you just know are pure in their hearts and will go on to lead the world, creating endless opportunities for themselves; this is Eve Robertshawe, a Plimmerton born girl who grew up with two brothers and loving parents. When QMC accepted Eve’s application they had no idea that they had just accepted the most hardworking, ethical, and kindest student they would ever have. Her leadership roles at QMC started small with things like ambassador and class leader, creating her repetition at the school. In year 11 Eve began a group called QMFem which was a feminist group for the school. The group aimed to inspire and empower women with the hope of a future not set on gender but the quality of the worker, a future where there is no gender pay gap and misogyny no longer lingers its presence in society. Eve has always fought for the big ideas and tackling them with all she has, putting all her effort in; nothing is half done. Her attitude and passion for the cause also comes from her commitment to the wellbeing of a community, she is a leading force in the wellbeing committee dedicated to ensuring the hauora of students studying at Queen Margaret College.

We do not yet know what Eve’s future holds but we can be sure her natural leadership qualities will take her far in this life.

Harry Styles MUSICIAN AND ACTOR Born February 1st 1994

"Treat people with kindness" "If your happy doing what you love nobody can tell you your not successful" Growing up Harry Edward Styles was born in Redditch on February 1, 1994. In Worcestershire in England. At 7 years old his parents divorced and grew up with his loving mother, Anne and his older sister, Gemma. Harry also had a love for music and performing because at his school he started a band. He also worked at the local bakery. But in 2010, everything changed. No longer would at the bakery, as he auditioned for the X factor at 16 years old. It was decided that they would combine 5 boys. Harry styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik, to form a group called One Direction.

The boys became a big hit, releasing 5 studio albums, with the last without Zayn Malik and going on many tours around the world. But in 2016 they disband, to follow their personal journeys.

Characteristics Harry styles has many giving and loving traits to his personality. Firstly, he constantly advocates for equality, for all sexualities and genders. He is also a supporter of the LGBTQA+ community, making everyone feel welcome and safe, as his fans and at his concerts. He also promotes inclusivity, with his brand “Treat People with Kindness”. Which is about no matter who you are, what color skin, and your beliefs. You are important and deserve kindness from people. Lastly, he is breaking down gender stereotypes, with confidently open traditionally “Girl clothes”, like dresses and ballet tutus.

Passions / cause Harry’s passion truly lies in his love for music, it shows his creativity and his skill to be able to use music and words to show deep meanings and emotions. Not only does his passion lie in music, but he uses his huge platform to make awareness to important causes. He constantly donates his profit to important charities like the global fund for women and helping refugees. Harry also always reminds people about the importance to “treat people with kindness”, no matter who they are and what they look like. Reminding the world about the significance of respect and love and how that can affect someone.

Keller had learned to feel objects and associate them with words spelled out by finger signals on her palm, to read sentences by feeling raised words on cardboard, and to make her own sentences by arranging words in a frame.

When Helen was a a young child, her behaviour had become highly erratic. She was having daily outbursts of emotion; kicking and screaming when she felt angry, and giggling uncontrollably when she was happy. Many of her relatives even thought she be put in an institution But the truth was, this behaviour really only boiled down to her high level of intelligence, and her frustration at not being able to communicate once she realised other were having conversations she couldn’t join.

The desire to be able to speak out became so strong, Helen even created a kind of sign language with her friend Marsha Washington – and by the time she was just seven years old, they’d already made up over 60 signs to communicate to each other.

Jacinda Ardern A leader we admire

Jacinda Ardern was born on the 26th of July 1980. She was the second of two daughters and was born to a Mormon family.

Ardern spent her first years in Murupara. She went to the University of Waikato in 1999. She firstly earn her bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies in 2001. She joined the Labour party at age 17. She then worked for the prime minister at the time Helen Clark, who she states to be her “political hero and mentor”. In 2017 Ardern registered a landslide victory in the parliamentary by-election for the vacant seat representing the solidly Labour district of Mount Albert in Auckland. When Labour’s deputy leader, Annette King, announced her resignation, Ardern was unanimously elected as her replacement.

Ardern was unanimously elected as deputy leader of the Labour Party on 1 March 2017, following the resignation of Annette King. Just five months later, with an election due, Labour's leader Andrew Little resigned after a historically low opinion polling result for the party, with Ardern elected unopposed as leader in his place.

She led her party to gain 14 seats at the 2017 general election on 23 September, winning 46 seats to the National Party's 56.

After a period of negotiations, New Zealand First chose to enter a minority coalition government with Labour, supported by the Green Party, with Ardern as prime minister.

She became the world's youngest female head of government at age 37 Ardern later became the world's second elected head of government to give birth while in office (after Benazir Bhutto) when her daughter was born on 21 June 2018.

Jacinda Adern NEW ZEALAND PRIME MINISTER Jacinda Kate Laurell Ardern was born 26 July 1980, in Hamilton. Her early years were spent in Murupara in Whakatane with her parents and sister, Louise.

Her family got moved to Morrinsville, Southeast of Auckland where she attended primary and secondary school. In 1999 at age 17, she began her association with the Labour Party and graduated from Waikato University in 2001.

Her passion for politics first came from seeing children without shoes or anything to eat, in her home town Murupara. She continues to work closely with children, speaking to them finding what the youth want and how to implement strategies. Alongside she’s always working towards women's rights, with achieving gender equality being “on top of her agenda”

THORNTON YOUNG NEW ZEALANDER OF THE YEAR AND MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCATE Sitting in a psychiatric ward as a young girl who made many attempts to take her life, Jazz Thornton would never have imagined she would be named "Young New Zealander of the Year" years later. Growing up during her childhood and teenage years Jazz faced multiple forms of abuse, bullying in school, depression, hospital stays and around 14 attempts to end her life, but now in her early 20s Jazz is a mental health advocate who has dedicated her life to making change in the mental health systems. Her story has changed many lives and speaking from her own experiences she has already been able to spread awareness and hope for others struggling in the world.

Jazz is not only an advocate for sharing voices of hope, but has also directed multiple films, and written books to share hers and others story to again encourage others to ask for help without having to feel as if they are a burden.

Although Jazz has faced many challenges in life and still faces many today she shows qualities of resilience, bravery, strength, kindness, which has motivated and encouraged teens to not be ashamed of these struggles.

Katherine Johnson was born on August 26, 1918 in West Virginia, USA. She was the youngest of four siblings having two older brothers and one older sister. Her mother, Joylette Coleman, was a teacher and her father, Joshua Coleman, was a farmer and janitor.

Katherine Johnson was born with the name Creola Katherine Coleman and from a young age, loved mathematics, solving difficult mathematical questions rather easily. For a long time, she knew she wanted to work as a mathematician, loving numbers and working out difficult calculations. but it would be hard to get a job, not only because she was a woman, but because she was a black woman. Her first jobs were in the teaching field. In 1939, she left the teaching profession and enrolled in a graduate maths program. (During this time, she was married to James Goble.)

In 1952 she heard that NACA was hiring mathematicians (women were just crunching numbers), and accepted the job in 1953. After a lot of hard work and effort, Katherine became the first female and person of colour to work for NASA.

From 1958-1986 she worked as an aerospace technologist. Her job mostly consisted of calculating trajectories and launch windows. She also worked on plans for a mission to mars.

Katherine Johnson went on to win multiple awards such as the Presidential medal of freedom in 2015, and made it into the national women's hall of fame in 2021 after she died.

Oprah Winfrey "TURN YOUR WOUNDS INTO WISDOM" BACK STORY

Oprah Winfrey was born in Mississippi 1954. As a young girl she was sexually abused by many male relatives and friends of her mother leading her to fall pregnant at the age of 14 through rape by her uncle.

The baby was born prematurely and died shortly after birth. Despite Oprah's troubled past she showed her perseverance when she began to excel in school and won a full scholarship to Tennessee State University. During this time she worked at The Nashville Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) and after her graduation she moved to the talk show Baltimore Is Talking in which she excelled.

Winfrey's dedication and passion towards children's right's is shown through how in 1994, President Bill Clinton signed a bill into law that Winfrey had proposed to Congress, creating a nationwide database of convicted child abusers.

In November 2013, Winfrey received the USA's highest civilian honour; the Presidential Medal of Freedom. President Barack Obama gave her this award for her contributions to her country.

Goebel is of Samoan, Chinese, and Scottish descent. She was interested in dance from a young age and started hip-hop dance lessons when she was 10. When she was 15, she started the dance group ReQuest with four friends. Initially they practiced in Goebel's aunt's garage and later at her father's warehouse. After a year working together, they went to the Monsters of Hip Hop Dance Convention in the United States and Goebel was selected to dance in the finale performance of the convention.

Who is she? she is a New Zealand choreographer, dancer, singer, director and actress. She is the founder and main choreographer of the dance school "The Palace Dance Studio", in which groups such as: ReQuest, Sorority, Bubblegum and The Royal Family stand out, the latter has won the World Hip Hop Dance Championship three times in a row, becoming the first group in history to achieve it

SCHOOLING She was initially homeschooled, under the watchful eye of Gertrude Allen. Once she finally went to school, she failed her O levels twice! (Fancy english end of school exams) In 1973, she attended West Heath Girls School, in Kent.

She was known for her Musical talent and excelled in Swimming and Diving, Ballet and Tap dancing. The school also awarded her for her incredible community spirit!

Princess Diana Spencer is perhaps most famous for her controversial death, but she was an inspirational woman who did amazing charity work and broke down stereotypes.

She was born on the 1st of July 1961 in Norfolk, England.

CHARITY AND ADVOCACY Throughout her marriage, divorce, and leading towards her death, Princess Diana was known for her advocacy, and charity work.

This involved many things, such as her advocacy against landmines. While in Bosnia and Angola, she was seen walking through a minefield while wearing a visor and bomb-proof breastplate. James Cowan, CEO of the mine-removal charity the Halo Trust, credits Diana with the success of the Ottawa Mine Ban Treaty.

She was also an advocate against homelessness. She was a patron for the charity, Centrepoint, which was the charity that helped the young homeless get off the street.

She was also an advocate for those suffering from HIV/Aids.

In the mid eighties, the world was struck by the Aids epidemic, and Princess Diana helped open Britain's first aid wards in London, which treated patients with Aids. It was there that she famously shook hands with a patient that had aids, without gloves, because of the misinformation that Aids was transmitted through touch.

Princess Diana, born Lady Diana Spencer (July 1st, 1961), was well-known even today, 24 years after her death. She was a member of the royal family, married to the Prince of Wales, but her fame and likeability came from her actions not her bloodline. She was a warm and sweet person, involved in helping with the stigma against people with HIV and AIDs and while working to ban landmines in Angola. The Royal Family did not approve of her being affiliated with theses crises’, but her sympathy, generosity, and thoughtfulness towards everyone showed that she wanted the world to be a better place.

Unfortunately, before she could carry on anymore acts of kindness, she passed away, fleeing from paparazzies in France, on August 31, 1997.
