THE QE JOURNEY
WHERE THE WORLD IS YOUR OYSTER
Here at QE, we have a seamless journey from Explorers Nursery all the way up to Year 13.
You can join us at any point along the way and we are skilled at supporting every student’s transition. During the two-year GCSE and A-Level programmes, we encourage entry at the beginning of the first year of study, but we will happily work to suit individual requirements.
We think the world of our students
We don’t do ‘one size fits all’. We offer a bespoke, tailored curriculum for each child – based on their strengths and abilities. As well as our overall School Principal, each school has its own Head, with Student Experience Leads dedicated to your child’s personal happiness and wellbeing. Our Academic Progress Leads, meanwhile, keep your child on track to achieve their academic aspirations.

AGE
3 TO YEAR 5
IT’S A SMALL WORLD
For our youngest pupils, the QE journey begins in Chapter House – a small school with a family atmosphere for children aged 3 months to 10 years.
Chapter House includes Explorers Nursery, for 3 months to 3 years specifically, in a dedicated early years setting. Safely nestled within the school estate, Chapter House provides a home from home for children to begin their learning journey through imaginative play and inspiring lessons – cared for by an expert team.
Discoveries are not limited to the classroom here. Playtimes and evenings are a time for fun with friends and the chance to learn new skills through enrichment
activities like first aid, mindfulness, sign & sing, and newspaper club. There is something for everyone.
Chapter House provides the safety and security to ensure every child thrives. Class teachers get to know each child in their care, tailoring their teaching to support and benefit every individual’s learning style.
From Year 1, all Chapter House students study Spanish and Mandarin each week with native speakers. They also enjoy regular swimming lessons in our on-site 25m swimming pool, plus cooking and baking classes, forest school lessons in our dedicated on-site woodland and multi-skill sports programmes with specialist coaches who keep them motivated and engaged.
The light is back in our daughter, we hadn’t quite appreciated how much it had dimmed or how her enthusiasm for school had waned. It is fair to say she loves going to school again and looks forward to each activity. The fact that she is disappointed when she gets collected at 6pm and wants to stay over, says it all!”
Year 4 Chapter House Parent
QE is an amazing environment, especially Chapter House. We do hundreds of fun activities, and we even go on trips! If I got £1 every time we did something fun, I would be a billionaire!”
Year 5 Student
YEARS 6 TO 9
MOVING UP IN THE WORLD
King’s Magna is designed to unlock every student’s potential.
A the heart of our programme are the core subjects, with Mathematics and English taught every single day to build strong foundations for future success.
Students join King’s Magna in Year 6 and stay until Year 9. Recognising that many are ready for greater challenge after Year 5 and to also provide a smoother transition in Key Stage 3. In Years 7 and 8, these essential skills are complemented by a carousel of subjects, giving students the chance to discover their talents and experience the full breadth of our academic offering.
By Year 9, students are ready to take greater ownership of their learning. They select four specialisms, allowing them to deepen their knowledge in areas of personal interest and prepare for the challenge of GCSE’s. For those with a passion for STEM, Stretch Maths
and Science Extended provide opportunities to explore A-level concepts early, while also working towards qualifications such as the Higher Project Qualification.
This balance of academic rigour and exploration helps every student to thrive, whilst also igniting ambition for the future. Alongside the core curriculum, our Curriculum Enrichment Pathway gives students the chance to pursue their passions and take their learning beyond the classroom. Designed to develop a lifelong love of learning, the programme offers an incredible variety of opportunities across sport, the creative and performing arts, and academic subjects.
A King’s Magna education ensures a smooth transition into Year 10, and an informed knowledge and experience of GCSE subject choices well ahead of time.
“ Our son really struggled in his early years and when he came to you in reception he was a shy little boy, who was quite happy to take a back seat. With the amazing encouragement of your fabulous teachers, your offer of extra-curricular activities and your steadfast ethos of being ‘the best that you can, with the gifts that you have’, you’ve really bought out the best in him. We couldn’t be prouder.”
Parents, Year 9 Student
Thank you for being an amazing headmaster and school team. Thank you for supporting my dreams of becoming an Olympic skier, I wouldn’t be where I am without you.”

ACADEMIC AMBITION
A world of lifelong learning and success
Discover a world where the skills for lifelong learning and future success are taught.
Where the highest quality academic outcomes and qualifications go hand in hand with the knowledge needed for life and the workplace.
Our approach to education focuses not only on teaching what to learn, but also on how to learn it. By developing these skills, we enable students to become lifelong learners, constantly able to adapt, think for themselves and to embrace innovation such as AI.
With over 30 different courses, our curriculum has been deliberately designed to be diverse and support the needs and interests of different learners. It is also responsive to national and international trends which ensures our learners are ready for the world they will make their mark in.
The best of both worlds
We offer both traditional pathways through GCSEs and A-Levels, and more vocational training through our BTEC programme. When we say we cater for the needs of individual students, we mean it. Learning is supplemented by super-curricular activities here. The opportunities to take extra qualifications, listen to guest speakers, enter competitions and find positions of leadership are exceptional ways to shape an educational journey.
The curriculum is reviewed annually to ensure it meets evolving needs, and fast-track and extension courses are available to meet the appetites of gifted learners.
QE FUTURES
A window on the world
Our Careers Department provides a comprehensive programme called QE Futures, which supports and prepares you for the working world. Our students are never on their own and our programme recognises the importance of effective careers education and guidance.
From Years 3-13, The Careers Team supports students by helping them set goals to stretch their abilities and acquire the skills to get them on their chosen path. Careers education is taught in Personal Development lessons and through visits from inspiring guests speakers.
The Careers Department is always available to offer further guidance on particular career paths and for individual support meetings. In years 12 and 13, we provide additional skilled support with university and job applications, to maximise the chances of success –including specific support for particular pathways such as medicine.
OPPORTUNITIES
A WORLD BEYOND
THE CLASSROOM
Discover your passions one adventure at a times
Our world is one of adventure and discovery, stretching far beyond the confines of the classroom. Our enrichment programme provides you with a holistic education and opportunities to develop knowledge, skills and experience in areas beyond academia – discovering self-care, work-life balance and how to juggle interests and talents with academic work. These values stay with students far beyond their time at QE.
Build your own world
With a uniquely varied activity programme which incorporates over 150 different activities each week, on and off campus, you can follow a personalised programme designed to support your talents and meet your needs. Add to this a trip and visit list which circles the globe, an outstanding offering of super-curricular activities and student leadership programmes which uniquely prepare tomorrow’s doctors, engineers, athletes, artists, and business owners – and you will see why we are truly a world apart.
A world of choice
We offer an enviable range of off-site activities for students in Years 3-13.
Combined Cadet Force
The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) is available from Year 8. It offers you the opportunity to learn new skills while taking part in a range of exciting, adventurous, military-themed, training activities. Make new friends and develop real life skills such as first aid and navigation while learning teamwork, confidence, leadership, and self-reliance skills. CCF can also count towards the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
There’s truly something for everyone including trips to the local cinema, bowling alley, restaurants and trampoline park, and visits to the nearby cities of York, Leeds, Durham and Manchester – to access history, culture and shopping.
We also like to explore the wider world, with full day excursions to exciting attractions around the UK. Unforgettable trips to Harry Potter at the Warner Bros Studio Tour and seaside resort of Blackpool with its famous tower and ballroom live long in our students’ memories.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) has been inspiring, guiding and supporting young people in their self-development since 1956. It is a personal programme of activities that can be completed at three levels:
• Bronze (for students aged 14+ in Year 10)
• Silver (for students aged 15+ in Year 11)
• Gold (for students aged 16+ in Year 12)
At QE, we run the award at all three levels and students have the opportunity to progress through each award or commence the Silver award as direct entrants (subject to a greater volunteering commitment).
Outreach
At QE, our outreach work in the wider community is incredibly important to us. We host and take part in 200-500 events each year with other schools, charities, community groups and international conservation and humanitarian projects. Our students connect with children from different schools and visitors from local community groups and organisations, developing leadership and interpersonal skills through memorable, shared experiences.
events each year
Charity Fundraising and Volunteering
Charitable fundraising is an important part of school life, as the whole QE community comes together to support important causes. At the start of each academic year, students and staff vote for which charities to support. This way everyone has a say in who or what we raise funds for.
Weekend Activities
From day students to boarders, everyone is warmly invited to take part in our wonderful programme of weekend activities. On and off-site weekend activities are a great way for students to extend their world, making new friends, gaining confidence and new skills, and exploring the world. These experiences contribute to students’ personal development and help embed them richly in the QE community. This then supports and bolsters the university or employment applications of our older students.
100 academic day trips
Trips
Our academic day and residential trips extend learning way beyond the classroom, in ways that spark curiosity and passion by bringing the curriculum to life. Every year group, from our youngest in Chapter House to QE College, has the opportunity to access an academic, curriculum-focused day trip. Our world is enriched by the 100 academic day trips and exciting programme of residentials we offer each year.
WELFARE AND WELLBEING
A WORLD BUILT ON RESPECT, EQUITY AND COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY
With over 50 different nationalities and 10% of the school population on the SEND register, diversity, equality, inclusion and justice are deeply embedded in our school ethos.
We
are proud to cultivate respect, equity and collective responsibility every day within our school community.
Student ambassadors
We have a fantastic ambassador programme enabling QE College students to act as peer and academic mentors, or ambassadors for individual subjects, study skills, welfare, wellbeing, equity and open days. Students grow their leadership skills and contribute to the QE world, making sure the views of the school community are represented and acted upon. Whatever individual aspirations and ambitions you have, at QE we celebrate them.
School council
Our students have a strong role in shaping their world at QE. The school and boarding councils meet regularly to give feedback to school leaders on issues raised by the student body. The outcomes are then fed back to their peers, so we can keep building a better world.
WHOLE SCHOOL AWARENESS WEEKS
Each year we run 6 themed awareness weeks on the topics of digital wellbeing, anti-bullying, wellbeing, equality, spirituality and culture.
A world of happiness and positivity
At QE we promote happiness, health and community safety through physical, social and mental wellbeing services for every member of our community.
We understand that beginning early is key to helping you build resilience and develop healthy, life-long strategies for supporting your physical, social and mental welfare. We know that when students feel safe and well, they can make the most of the academic and the enrichment opportunities available to them.
Our Welfare Hub lives at the heart of QE, and has a separate, dedicated and specially-trained team of staff on hand to listen and support our students.
Here you can:
• Take time to yourself or chat with staff
• Take part in wellbeing activities – such as Woodland & Wildlife sessions, Chat & Craft, International Club, Study Support, Relaxation Yoga and Tea & Talk
• Join a council or group where you can make your voice heard and have a positive impact, including Student Voice, Faculty Action, School Council, Anti-Bullying Council or Food Council
• Become a Mentor or Ambassador, or run a Wellbeing Session for younger students.

PREPARING FOR TOMORROW’S WORLD
QE’s Esports teams are amongst the best in the UK. They compete both against other schools, and professional teams of adults – achieving results that place some of our students in the top 0.1% worldwide.
Our BTEC Esports course, available to Year 10 and Year 12 students, is part of our world-class drive to offer modern subjects for the industries of the future and support the diversity of talent within our school.
BTEC LESSONS
A collaborative aproach, allows students to freely share their thoughts on game play, ideas to improve performance, and reviews of the best software for analysis. The team ethos is felt within the classroom, and the freedom to choose topics and contribute has fuelled passion, enthusiasm and dedication for this up-and-coming subject.
“ Students who once drifted through school have found belonging, motivation, and even improved results in other subjects. Far from harming wellbeing, structured Esports has enhanced it.
Critics warn that gaming can damage mental health. They’re not wrong. But esports in schools isn’t part of the problem – it’s part of the solution.”
JAMES LUXFORD ESports Coordinator
PERFORMING ARTS
ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE
Performing Arts at QE is rooted in current industry practice. 90% of our staff are industry-trained and experienced, and many still practice as artists.
Our performing arts provision is innovative and forwardthinking – the annual musical sits side-by-side with training in immersive theatre, site-specific, promenade, open air, physical theatre and dance.
Everyone is welcome, even if the limelight isn’t for them. Students can help run our professional on-site theatre as front-of-house staff, backstage crew or technical operators. They can also develop public speaking skills and debate skills instead of dramatic techniques.
The on-site theatre is a professional receiving house. Students can see visiting work on campus and network with the visiting practitioners.
Performing Arts at QE is an opportunity for students to champion each other, explore their heritage and culture, and share their skills and talents. Students learn the importance of creativity, working with others, working to a brief, working under pressure, managing schedules, and fostering empathy for one another.
The icing on the cake is when our community comes together to support, appreciate and celebrate each event.
ACADEMY OF DRAMATIC ARTS PROGRAMME (ADA)
If you have a passion for performing, you can join our Academy of Dramatic Arts (ADA) programme. ADA is a recognised Performing Arts pathway for anyone wanting to develop their performance skills further. It also supports those wanting to develop skills in Backstage Crew.
ADA is available to students from King’s Magna, all the way through to QE College. There are different levels of training as you progress through QE, with exciting options in Years 12 and 13, including acting, musical theatre, actor musician and dance.
Students have the opportunity to take additional exams – some of which are recognised by UCAS. They also benefit from a weekend workshop with an external provider and have the opportunity to go on an ADA theatre trip each year.
Many of our Performing Arts students have gone on to study at acclaimed drama schools such as the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, the New York Film Academy, the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and the American Academy of Dramatic Art (AADA). They have become incredible role models for our younger students.
THE QE COMMUNITY
WE THINK THE WORLD OF OUR FAMILY
We are immensely proud of our global QE community, which has local, national and international roots creating a hub of culture in the North of England.
Day
We are one of the top choices for independent schooling in our local area with over 400 day students. Our close proximity to York, Leeds and Harrogate – and the extensive daily bus network which reaches most of Yorkshire – means we are a viable option for hundreds of local families.
Juggling work and family can sometimes be tricky, so we offer our day students wraparound care from 7.30am until early evening. They are also welcome to spend the night in boarding when you need it. We find many of our day students stay with us much longer than just the normal school hours – building friendships, learning something new or just making even more QE memories.
Boarding
Our boarding provision is second to none, with a mixture of British students and over 50 other nationalities. Find out more about our boarding provision overleaf.
Forces
QE is a CEA-accredited school and has been welcoming military children for over 100 years. We currently have over 300 Forces students living on campus.
We understand that military children sometimes need additional support. Our Forces Liaison Officers are specifically trained to identify issues including separation anxiety, worries around parent deployments and difficulties arising from moving around a lot. We have both ex-military personnel and staff who were once military children themselves within our team, who can use their personal experiences to help our Forces students with their own journey.
International
We have a long history of welcoming a global community to QE – whether you are looking for a full British education or a stepping stone to a top UK university for your child. Many international students begin their QE journey in King’s Magna, allowing them to adjust to the English education system, improve their English skills, and gain a strong foundation of English, Mathematics and Science before their GCSE and A-Level studies. We also have younger students starting from Year 4, and older students joining us during examination years. We also accept short-term immersion options.
Language is no barrier at QE. If English is your child’s second language, the international department will help them improve their grammar and vocabulary so they can participate in the school’s English-speaking environment and achieve their full potential in core subjects.
We support students learning English, achieving academic excellence in English qualifications and completing IELTS courses to help them apply for university. Our innovative English Language Programme offers a transformative one-year journey designed specifically for international students aged 14-17 who are ready to unlock their academic potential in English.
We are the first UK school to achieve the Gold Award for Excellence in International Student Provision by QEGUK. This certificate signifies that we are one of the few educational establishments committed to the highest standards of performance for international students, and care provided to all our pupils.
More specific information about how we support our international students can be found at the back of this brochure.

BOARDING AT QE
A WORLD THAT FEELS LIKE HOME
At QE, we welcome boarders from Years 3-13. At the heart of our boarding are three central characteristics –opportunity, individuality, and a caring community. These work together to create a place that genuinely feels like home.
Each of our boarding houses are on-site, and only a few feet from the school – providing a safe and secure place to call home while you are with us. The campus is secluded and has 24/7 security so you are always safely looked after.
Out of this world facilities
The hustle and bustle around campus makes the school feel like a town. You have access to an on-site medical centre, gym, swimming pool, uniform and essentials shop, coffee and tuck shop, a weekend fast-food café and plenty of outdoor space.
You will also be able to enjoy the amazing school facilities outside of the normal school day – whether that is extra time in the gym, on the sports pitches or in our music rooms, or time doing what you love in our esports room, art or dance studios. With everything close by, you can indulge your passions whenever you like.
MUGGLES
Our space for boarders to relax and hang out with friends. We have PS5 consoles, board games, films and comfy couches inside, and a padel court, MUGA court, climbing and bouldering wall, skate track, playground area and sheltered breakout spaces outside.
A smaller world for smaller people
Younger students have bedrooms and common rooms designed for little people, with smaller beds, chairs and furniture. Chapter House boarders (Years 3-5) have their own boarding house with a separate kitchen area, lounge, relax space, group study pods, and a wellbeing room. Every young boarder can ask for a House Parent to read them a bedtime story and tuck them in at night.
A world of independence
For QE College students, boarding life offers greater autonomy. Students live in The Atrium, a modern, university-style living space, complete with common rooms for table tennis, bedrooms surrounding the dining hall, and access to TVs, game consoles, coffee machines, ovens, kettles, and washing machines.
A world that changes with you
As students move through our boarding houses, life changes with them and they are afforded greater independence. Our exclusive, dedicated boarding team supports them every step of the way, making sure they have the very best experience.
A flexible approach
For those students who consistently return home at the weekends, we do offer a weekly boarding option. Flexible boarding nights are also available for day students who may need to board on occasion.
LIFE BEYOND QE
A WONDERFUL WORLD AWAITS
When you leave us in Year 13, the world of QE goes with you.
You will transition from a QE student to an Old Ethelburgian, joining our flourishing Alumni who have gone on to many great things and who stay in touch regularly, supporting and inspiring our current students.
OBAFEMI ALABI
Four years, four sports, three internships, one TEDx Talk – and an unforgettable experience.
I joined Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate in Year 10 not fully knowing what I was stepping into. Looking back now, I realise I walked into the environment that would shape my mindset, my confidence, and my purpose. From 6am basketball sessions that taught me discipline and a boarding life that pushed me to grow and adapt, to drama rehearsals that helped me find my voice – QE wasn’t just a school, it was a forge for growth and I am deeply grateful to everyone involved.
QE’s motto is ‘To be the best I can with the gifts I have.’ That stuck with me. In every assembly I delivered, every early morning, every match, every pass and fail. I tried to live that out. Not perfectly, but honestly.
Most importantly, I want to thank every friend, teacher, coach, and member of staff who made this experience what it was. You shaped not just my time at school, but who I am now.
Whatever happens on results day, I leave knowing I am ready for what’s next.

QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S
CLOSING REMARKS
AMY MARTIN Chair of the Collegiate Board
As someone who once walked these same corridors as a student, it gives me enormous pride that you are considering educating your child at Queen Ethelburga’s.
This place has always been more than just a school to me – it is a community - Team QE – made of students, parents and staff that work together to ensure our Hill Standard ‘ To be the best that I can with the gifts that I have’ is evident in our every day, and all that we do.
Our children are curious and kind, we have staff who go above and beyond, and a school family that celebrates every child’s achievements, big and small. We invest in our campus, as our student experience is very important to us.
What makes our school so special is the warmth that runs through it. It is a place where children feel known, encouraged, and inspired to be their very best. As a parent myself, I know how important it is to find a school where your child will feel safe, happy, and supported – and I can confidently say this is such a place.
We would be delighted to welcome you and your family to join our community.
DAN MACHIN Principal of the Collegiate
My role as Principal at Queen Ethelburga’s is one of great responsibility and from which I have a great deal of pride.
I get to see everyday the impact of the opportunities we offer, the decisions we make and how students at Queen Ethelburga’s thrive because we are committed to offering an innovative education to suit individual needs.
Having joined in 2005, I have worked across many roles— including Head of Sixth Form, Head of College, Vice Principal, and now Principal. This experience has given me a deep understanding of our students’ aspirations and strengths, and a strong commitment to ensuring they thrive.
At QE, we aim to nurture not only academic excellence but also leadership, resilience, and independence. Our students leave us confident, self-aware, and ready to make their mark in the world.
Thank you for your interest—I look forward to working with you to help your child achieve their very best.
TAKING A BREAK
OUR WORLD DOESN’T STOP WHEN THE HOLIDAYS START
We understand that school holidays make up a big part of the calendar year and don’t always fit your working routine.
That is why we offer various options throughout the school holidays for our children to engage in exciting activities and fabulous care in a place they know and love.
Camp QE
Camp QE is our very popular holiday club here at QE. Our three-age tier, multi-activity camp runs from 8:00-17:30 during all holidays, with specifically-themed weeks.
Camp QE Minis
For children up to Year 1. Our Specialist Early Years practitioners work alongside our Camp QE team to deliver a fun and educational activity programme in small groups of eight. Activities include forest school, outdoor exploration, creative crafts, baking, pool parties, sports and scavenger hunts.
Camp QE Juniors
For children in Years 1-7. Each week features a unique theme, with team-based challenges to earn points. At the end of each week, the team with the fewest points puts forward their Team Leader for an amusing punishment. Activities include baking and crafts, pool fun with inflatables, scavenger hunts and climbing wall adventures.
Camp QE Seniors
For children in years 7-11. Focuses on adrenaline sports and team challenges. The week ends with an exciting final showdown and a camp-wide party. Activities include Escape rooms, adventure pursuits and den building, scavenger hunts, inflatable obstacle courses and Ultimate Frisbee competitions.
Holidays at QE
We offer QE students the chance to stay with us on campus during the holidays. This is a popular option for international students or students preparing for exams during the Easter holidays or May half-term. Activities revolve around wellbeing, relaxation and revision. It is also a good settling in option for new students joining us at a mid-point in the year. They can make new friends and get to know their new school home before starting their learning journey.
Keep an eye on our website for the latest additions and updates.

BOARDING
We firmly believe at Queen Ethelburga’s that it is vitally important the students living onsite with us as boarders, feel like QE is a home from home.
Having a team of Houseparents who are professionals in their role, rather than teachers duplicating roles, really does make a difference to the happiness of the students, as they come away from school at the end of every day.
A varied programme of house activities, QE toast time tradition, baking at the weekends, cookery evening and student run socials are just a few of the experiences our boarders have the opportunity to take advantage of – all with other students who are likely to become lifelong friends.
Within the boarding houses the student voice is very important, and we run several groups to ensure our provision caters for all. The Boarding Prefects, comprising of Student Voice representatives, Food Council and QE Eco Warriors provide regular feedback to the QE Boarding Management Team with regards to activities, socials and the rules in house. Student Wellbeing is at the forefront of our boarding provision. All our students are assigned a Boarding Mentor at the start of the academic year who meets them regularly, on both a oneto-one basis and in small group settings.
With social occasions throughout the year for all boarders, QE has additional opportunities to teach social etiquette and to celebrate the diverse cultural traditions of our boarders. We believe that it is important to recognise the important moments within the variety of cultures that make up QE and find that our international club remains one of the most popular boarding clubs every year. During club sessions, students come together weekly to discuss different cultures, explore cuisines, share experiences and celebrate different festivals.
Every boarding bedroom is provided with a timer-controlled plasma TV, mini-kitchen with fridge, a hair dryer, iron and board, wash hand basin, heated-towel rail and fan. All bedrooms are air-conditioned and have their own individual, private en-suite bathroom with toilet and shower. Sixth form students share apartment style accommodation, in preparation for the independent style of university accommodation.
All our boarding houses also provide cosy communal areas for socialising with friends, activities and relaxation. We have twelve Boarding Houses on our campus at QE, home to students from Year 3 upwards.

ONE YEAR EXPERIENCE AND
ONE
TERM TASTER COURSES
At QE, we recognise that there are students who want to come to the UK and experience what life is like at a top British boarding school, experiencing everything from academic subjects to creative arts, sports, and the range of enrichment activities and trips on offer.
We also understand there is an increasing number of students that want to ‘try before they buy’ and get a taster of the experience before they commit to it fully.
At QE we can offer One Term Taster Courses and One Year Experiences to students looking for a short term high quality course.
Who is it for?
Students looking to come to the UK for an immersion experience at a British boarding school or a taste of life at QE.
How long can I stay?
One term is the minimum stay, and they can choose to extend that time whilst they are with us.
Age?
Available from age 7, up to 17 years old.
Year groups available?
Year 3 to Year 12
Language Level
We have specific requirements depending on the age of the student, but we do offer a broad range of courses for various abilities.
Students are placed into their year group as though they would be staying for the full time with us. This allows students to be fully immersed into life at QE and treated equally in the classroom, whilst still recognising they will have their own aspirations to achieve while they are with us. English language provision allows students to continue to develop their language skills, and where possible, students will be able to sit IELTS and Cambridge English exams with us.
We understand this may be a students’ first experience of boarding, so we provide exceptional support from our dedicated boarding Houseparent team, and our student wellbeing team, offering pastoral care around the clock 24 hours a day. Students will have ‘buddies’ when they come to help them acclimatise, along with our student peer mentors making sure our students settle in and feel comfortable. All rooms are shared with up to 3 students per room, and all rooms have en-suite facilities along with more than enough storage space and a safe for any valuables. In their time with us, students can experience everything life at QE has to offer, including all the activities, sports and trips they are able to try. The majority of enrichment activities take place on our campus on the rural Thorpe Underwood estate, meaning that students maximise their time at school developing their skills outside the classroom, as well as within it.
Entry Criteria
We offer a range of options that students can sign up for, depending on their academic ability and their English language level. Students with good language skills will join our mainstream school, whilst those with lower levels of English that would like to focus on developing these skills can take advantage of our English Language Programme. These courses can be co-accredited to make sure that students who need to formally recognise what they have learnt with us, are able to do so.
Students who join us for a short term, will gain a great time from their time in a boarding school. Students can improve their English by making friends with native speakers, develop confidence in using their newly acquired language skills – whilst also gaining knowledge in different subject areas that will supplement their studies in their home country.

Our incredible facilities include 42 acres of outdoor sports pitches maintained by a full-time grounds team, stateof-the-art sports centres, and facilities that have hosted professional teams including Newcastle United for training camps.
Proven Excellence
As a vibrant and supportive co-educational boarding and day school, we welcome students from 3 months to 19 years old, creating a diverse, nurturing community where international students thrive alongside their British peers.
Individual Growth Focus
Our school motto, “To be the best that I can, with the gifts that I have”, reflects our commitment to recognising and developing each student’s unique potential.
We’ve been welcoming students from all around the world for over 20 years, and today QE has 53 different nationalities amongst its student community. We celebrate our diversity and encourage students to mix and learn about each other’s cultures as often as we can.
We have a team of International Liaison Officers who care for our international community here at QE, and support the arrival of all our new students. They explain the routines, expectations and environment and can be approached at any time. We also have a variety of staff who speak a variety of languages, or can provide access to a suitable translator should any student or parent wish to talk to someone in their native language. We do not underestimate the importance of the loco-parentis role for our international student community, who find themselves making a second home across the other side of the world. In the words of our students themselves – our aim for our whole student community is that QE ‘feels like home’.
Dear Parents, Wider Family Members, Guardians, Agents and Beyond
“Whatever your role in reading this introduction to our award-winning school, we welcome you and look forward to welcoming you into our community. As Head of International Admissions, it is a privilege for my team and I to be your first port of call in finding out how an education at Queen Ethelburga’s can support your child’s aspirations.
We have representatives working across the world to ensure we maximise the opportunities to meet our families face to face, knowing how big the decision is to send your child to study overseas. Private schools have for a long time played a very prominent role in the UK’s education system, and today the UK is still regarded as one of the top study destinations in the world.
As you might expect, to achieve excellent results at high school level is a great foundation on which your children can build future success at university and in their chosen careers. The offer of a place at Queen Ethelburga’s follows a comprehensive admissions process, not designed to be selective, but which aims to assess the suitability of a student for life in a British boarding school, their innate academic abilities and how best we can support that child for success.
Whilst many students will focus on results and league tables, there is so much more to a school, and to QE, than just results. Our experienced in-country representatives will be happy to talk to you through the factors you need to consider when choosing a school and can give you an extensive insight to what we have to offer here at QE. For now, enjoy looking at an overview of what QE can provide as an educational home for student success. We hope the following information will excite you as to what we can offer your child or children when you choose QE.”
JEREMY DEAN Head of International Admissions
STUDENT WELFARE
We want all our students to feel safe and secure, which will enable them to focus on their academic life and the enrichment opportunities available to them.
We aim to work with parents and develop relationships based on respect, trust and responsibility to support happy and confident young people who understand the impact they have on the school and the wider community.
Under our Student Welfare team we support students in a variety of ways, ensuring that they are getting the support they need to be at their best every day:
Learning Development
Our Learning Development team support all students to access their academic studies and ensure they have the necessary support and level of challenge. Our team work with students on a one-to-one basis, in the classroom and in supporting with examinations and access arrangements. All students have access to the Learning Development Department which seeks to develop the learning of all students, through offering support and opportunities which strengthen each student, irrespective of ability.
Personal Development
Personal, Social, and Health Education (PSHE) at Key Stages 1,2, 3 and 4 helps students to lead confident, healthy and responsible lives as individuals and members of society. Through work in lesson time and a wide range of activities across and beyond the curriculum, students gain practical knowledge and skills to help them live healthily and to deal with the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues they face as they approach adulthood.
Medical Centre
Our Medical Centre is open 08:00 – 18:00 Monday to Friday with evenings and weekends staffed by our team of First Response Emergency Care (FREC) staff. The Medical and FREC teams take responsibility for the general medical care, health and wellbeing needs of the community.
The school Medical Centre houses three assessment rooms, four dedicated medical bedrooms, a waiting room and reception. You can be assured that whilst on campus our students receive excellent medical assistance should they require it.
FREC staff are responsible for emergency first aid care across the site between 18:00- 08:00 weekdays and 24 hours over the weekend. They are highly-equipped beyond the traditional first aid qualifications, to deal with a huge array of medical emergencies.
International students have access to emergency health care under the National Health Centre (NHS) and will not be charged for hospital treatment or further medical treatment during their studies.
School Counsellor
We have a dedicated School Counsellor, who is a trained therapist. During counselling appointments, students are encouraged to talk about their feelings and emotions with the counsellor, who will listen and support them without judging or criticising. The counsellor can help them gain a better understanding of their feelings and thought processes, and find their own solutions to problems. Students are able to request to see the counsellor or may be referred via the Wellbeing and Welfare teams.
Independent Listener
We also have an Independent Listener, available for all our students. The listener is a person outside of Collegiate staff who students can speak to privately about personal problems or concerns. Students are able to request to see the listener or may be referred via the Wellbeing and Welfare teams.
Student Voice
We believe that the voice of our student body plays a vital role in ensuring our provision is the best that it can be. We have a variety of opportunities for students to provide us with feedback about life here at QE. There are over 350 students involved in the current student voice groups that support us with the planning and decision making about how we run our school.
• Boarding Council
• School Council
• Prefect Team – academic and boarding
• Food Council
• Peer Mentors, buddies and leaders
• QEExtra volunteers
• Anti-Bullying Council
All these groups meet regularly with staff to provide ideas and feedback and they work closely with their peers to provide the leadership teams with valued opinions.

UK EDUCATION SYSTEM
FIVE KEY STAGES OF THE NATIONAL CURRICULUM
According to the annual census conducted by the ISC (Independent Schools Council), there are now 545,640 pupils at ISC schools, 25,526 of which whose parents live overseas.
This represents 4.7% of all pupils and brings cultural diversity to our schools.
Many factors influence parents choosing to send their children to a private school. Sending your child to study overseas is a big decision and it is important to fully understand the structure and offering of each school.
Boarding schools are those where students live on campus throughout the term and these can be both single sex or co- educational (boys and girls). There is no conclusive evidence which suggests either is better educationally so this will be best decided by parents and children based on personal preference.
Here at Queen Ethelburga’s we welcome boarding and day students from all around the world, both boys and girls. In order to gain a place at Queen Ethelburga’s your child will have to go through a comprehensive admission process. Our experienced admissions staff will be more than happy to talk through the important factors you need to consider when choosing a school and give you an extensive insight to what we have to offer here at QE.
The National Curriculum is constructed in five Key Stages
