Aberdeen City Carers Support Service Carers Week 2021 • 7-13 June

Carers Week is a national initiative highlighting the importance of unpaid carers and the challenges that they face, and recognising the contribution that they make to families and their communities.

This year’s theme is making caring visible and valued which aims to show that everyone has a part to play in supporting carers, from your carers support service to your employer, health services, retailers and the entire community.

To mark Carers Week, we are running a variety of online sessions via Microsoft Teams and Zoom. If you are interested in joining any of the sessions, please let us know and we will send you an invite.

Monday 7 June • 10am - 12noon Advocacy and your rights Self-advocate to be heard – Self-advocacy means you know your rights and responsibilities, you speak up for your rights, and you can make choices and decisions that affect your life.

Be informed about your rights and learn how to advocate for yourself during a joint session with Allyson Flockhart from Advocacy Aberdeen.

Monday 7 June • 2-4pm Men’s group – husband, dad, son, carer?

Unpaid carers are generally perceived as being female, however statistics show that around 40% are male. Join this session to talk about issues affecting you as a male carer and take the opportunity to shine a light on your often understated value.

Tuesday 8 June • 10am - 12noon Power of Attorney and Guardianship Power of Attorney enables an individual to plan what they want another person to do for them in the future should they become incapable of making decisions about their own affairs. A Guardianship Order allows someone to make ongoing decisions on behalf of an adult with incapacity on matters such as paying bills, dealing with bank accounts, or making decisions about care and personal welfare matters.

This session will be led by Kathleen Taylor, Engagement and Participation Officer (Carer) from the Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland.

Wednesday 9 June • 11am - 12noon Carers PATH session A follow-up to the PATH session held in May where Ryan, our guest facilitator, worked with carers to collect thoughts and ideas on what your service might look like. Carers provided suggestions for a logo, branding and name for the new co-produced service.

Join us to look at the first stage idea mock-ups and decide on your preferred logo designs.

Wednesday 9 June • 2-3pm Craftivism Look in this mirror and what do you see? Could it be a carer looking back at me?

A session where you will make and decorate a mirror that can be used to raise awareness of unpaid carers, thus making caring “visible and valued”.

Thursday 10 June • 2-4pm An afternoon with Fiona Kennedy Fiona Kennedy is a singer, songwriter, broadcaster and producer as well as being a tireless volunteer and ambassador for a number of charities. Her career is tremendously varied with highlights including singing for Her Majesty The Queen on several occasions, performing at the G8 Summit at Edinburgh Castle, and singing at the first ever NATO Burns Supper in Brussels!

Join us with a cuppa while we listen to Fiona perform and share some stories with us.

Thursday 10 June • 7-8pm An evening of relaxation When it feels like you are juggling everything life throws at you and there are not enough hours in a day, relaxation gives you a break. It can lower blood pressure, improve energy levels and help to balance your body’s hormones.

Join this session of calm and take part in a range of relaxing activities to help you unwind, de-stress and feel more at ease.

Friday 11 June • 11am - 12noon Scams and fraud, and The Herbert Protocol Scams and fraud can happen on the doorstep, over the telephone, by post and online. Do you know how to spot and avoid them? A representative from Police Scotland will give advice on what to look out for and what you can do to keep yourself safe. Details will also be given on The Herbert Protocol, an information-gathering tool to assist the Police in finding a vulnerable person who has gone missing as quickly as possible.

They have very kindly offered a free afternoon tea to one lucky carer who attends an online event during Carers Week 2021.

The Bread Maker is a commercially focused social enterprise producing high-quality bread and confectionery.

The purpose of their business is to provide meaningful training, educational and social activities to adults with learning disabilities.
