LA VUELTA SIN RETORNO A UN MUNDO INDELEBLE

Acaso sea tarea más adecuada para un filólogo que para un escritor entender la historia de la Fundación Pablo Atchugarry a través de una lista completa de las exposiciones que ha albergado y de las visitas que ha recibido. Más interesante parece conocer ese mosaico fascinante que es la cabeza de Pablo mediante algunas propuestas concretas que su obra mayor ha ofrecido y que, por su tarea democratizadora y su nivel artístico, revelan su esencia más que cualquier enumeración desapasionada.

Hay detrás de la Fundación una curaduría coherente pero que, pese a ese atributo, no rehúye la más ecléctica de las diversidades.

La vieja confusión entre seriedad y solemnidad no parece haberse dado nunca en Atchugarry, dueño de un rigor ejemplar y de un impredecible sentido lúdico.

A su juego estuvieron llamados todos quienes, después de arduos meses de trabajo para lograrla, pudieron ver la monumental exposición de Le Corbusier que llegó especialmente de Suiza. Aquello era una fiesta de niños-pintores, niños-dibujantes, niños-arquitectos, niñosdecoradores y niños-niños. Y qué fiesta tan fabulosa y desordenada. Como todas las fiestas que valen la pena, claro.

Pero no fue la única. ¿Cómo olvidar a José Gurvich y sus múltiples mundos fantásticos, los de los primeros dibujos, los del Taller Torres que le dio un método y una filosofía pero que lo encadenó aunque no por mucho tiempo, los del Cerro de Montevideo, los de los colores primarios, los de la paleta subversiva y los del misticismo judío? ¿Y al Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Buenos Aires, cuyo elegante e innegociable modernismo viene a desmentir el mito de que la pintura ha muerto y de que solo hay lugar para el vacío postmoderno, para la producción en serie y para el impacto por el impacto mismo? A ese MACBA que nos abraza a la distancia, ¿cómo olvidarlo?

Es imposible, y lo mismo sucede con la reciente muestra “Vértigo”, portadora de tres joyas de la actual producción italiana donde la fineza de Riccardo De Marchi convive armónicamente con la inquietante y bella contundencia de Arcangelo Sassolino y de Francesco Candeloro.

En la Fundación también ha habido lugar para voces sabias, para voces ascendentes y para voces nuevas de un Uruguay que necesita de un fuerte impulso multicultural para crecer en mercados más consolidados. Y por ello hemos disfrutado tanto la delicadeza del pincel de Linda Kohen, la maestría del cincel de Wifredo Díaz Valdéz y la genialidad de Hermenegildo Sábat, el fotógrafo, pintor y periodista que honra al país desde hace décadas desde su lugar como caricaturista principal de Clarín y como presidente de la Academia Nacional de Periodismo de Argentina.

Octavio Podestá, Gustavo Vázquez, Eduardo Cardozo, Joaquín Lalanne, Martín Pelenur, Anhelo Hernández y Rodrigo Zorrilla San Martín son otros nombres de generaciones viejas y nuevas que se codean con camaradería, porque en la Fundación hay lugar para todos los artistas de calidad y para todas las personas de buen corazón.

Testigo de lo cual, partiendo de ellos, como de Aurelio Amendola, de Norbert Thomas o de Peter Schwickerath, han sido decenas de miles de visitantes que evocarán con nostalgia, incansablemente, alrededor de fogatas reales o imaginarias, cómo todo comenzó con una curiosa visita a una especie de museo que en realidad tenía tanta vida como el Amazonas.

Visitantes como los plásticos Ignacio Iturria, Gyula Kosice y Enio Iommi, el legendario banquero y coleccionista David Rockefeller y los ex presidentes José Mujica, Jorge Batlle, Luis Alberto Lacalle y Julio María Sanguinetti.

Y, naturalmente, artistas como Ricardo Darín, embajador de lujo de la Argentina en el mundo, Mario Vargas Llosa, referente del boom latinoamericano que conquistó el Premio Nobel de Literatura, Santiago Segura, maestro de la comedia de la España de fines del siglo XX y comienzos del XXI, Rigoberta Menchú, justa ganadora del Nobel de la Paz, y Glenn Close, la conmovedora actriz que fue nominada seis veces al Oscar, que ganó el inverosímil cuarteto del Tony, el Emmy, el Globo de Oro y el Premio Donostia a la trayectoria y que, antes de una cena exquisita en Manantiales, susurró con voz apenas audible: “¿Les molesta que me quede unos minutos viendo esta Piedad? Es que, por Dios, es demasiado hermosa”.

Nadie se lo había dicho, pero íntimamente Glenn sabía que ese conjunto de obras que la fascinó había sido reunido por un hombre que, como ella, transformaba en lema aquella preciosa frase del eterno David Hockney: “Los artistas son como niños que se niegan a soltar sus lápices de color”. Pablo es, qué duda cabe, un niño. Un niño vasco de 63 años y que, coincidiremos todos, no puede pasar desapercibido.

AROUND AN UNFORGETTABLE WORLD WITH NO RETURN

Understanding the history of the Pablo Atchugarry Foundation based on a complete list of the exhibitions it has hosted and the visits it has received may be a task more befitting of a philologist than a writer. It seems of greater interest to discover the fascinating mosaic that is Pablo’s mind through some of the specific pieces and events that his greatest work has offered, whose democratizing action and artistic caliber reveal its essence better than any dispassionate list.

Behind the Foundation there’s a curatorship that’s coherent but which, despite this trait, does not reject the most eclectic diversity. It seems that the old confusion between being serious and being solemn never arose in Atchugarry, who is marvelously exacting yet also has an unpredictable sense of fun.

His playfulness enveloped all those who, after grueling months of hard work in order to pull it off, were able to see the monumental exhibition on Le Corbusier that arrived expressly from Switzerland. It was a party of children/painters, children/illustrators, children/architects, children/ decorators and children/children. And what a fabulous and chaotic party it was. Like any party worth its salt, of course.

But it wasn’t the only one. How could we forget José Gurvich and his multiple fantastic worlds, the worlds of the first drawings, of the Torres Studio that gave him a method and philosophy but wrapped him in chains, though not for long, of the Cerro de Montevideo, of primary colors, of the subversive palette and of Jewish mysticism?

And what about the Museum of Contemporary Art of Buenos Aires (MACBA), whose elegant and uncompromising modernism gives the lie to the myth that painting has died and that there’s only room for the postmodern void, for mass production and for impact for its own sake?

How could we forget the MACBA, which wraps us in its embrace from a distance?

It’s impossible, and the same is true for the recent exhibition “Vértigo”, which features three gems of contemporary Italian art, where the finesse of Riccardo De Marchi coexists in harmony with the restless and beautiful power of Arcangelo Sassolino and Francesco Candeloro.

The Foundation has also embraced wise voices, voices on the ascendant and the new voices of a Uruguay that needs a strong multicultural push in order to grow in more consolidated markets. And for this reason, we have enjoyed the finesse of Linda Kohen’s brush strokes, Wifredo Díaz Valdéz’s mastery with a chisel and the brilliance of Hermenegildo Sábat, the photographer, painter and journalist who has honored the country for decades in his role as the main cartoonist for Clarín and as president of the National Academy of Journalism of Argentina.

Octavio Podestá, Gustavo Vázquez, Eduardo Cardozo, Joaquín Lalanne, Martín Pelenur, Anhelo Hernández and Rodrigo Zorrilla de San Martín are some other names from generations old and new that rub elbows in a spirit of fellowship, because the Foundation has room for all artists of quality and anyone with a good heart.

Attesting to this, starting with these people and encompassing others like Aurelio Amendola, Norbert Thomas and Peter Schwickerath, are the tens of thousands of visitors who will recall, indefatigably and with nostalgia, around real or imaginary bonfires, how it all began with a curious visit to a sort of museum that in reality was bursting with as much life as the Amazon River.

And, naturally, artists such as Ricardo Darín, Argentina’s global ambassador par excellence, Mario Vargas Llosa, a leading exponent of the Latin American boom who received the Nobel Prize for Literature, Santiago Segura, a master of comedy in Spain in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, Rigoberta Menchú, who won a well-deserved Nobel Peace Prize, and Glenn Close, the actress whose poignant acting has seen her nominated six times for an Oscar and won her an improbable “quartet” including a Tony, an Emmy, a Golden Globe and the Donostia Lifetime Achievement Award, who before an exquisite dinner in Manantiales, whispered almost inaudibly: “Would you mind if I stayed a few minutes to look at this Pietà? It’s just that, my God, it’s beautiful”.

Nobody had told her, but Glenn instinctively knew that that set of works she found so fascinating had been assembled by a man who, like her, had turned that beautiful quote by the timeless David Hockney into a life motto: “Artists are just children who refuse to put down their crayons”. Pablo is, beyond a doubt, a child. A 63-year-old Basque child who we can all agree is incapable of going unnoticed.

LE CORBUSIER, EL ARTISTA - CRÓNICA DE UNA EXPOSICIÓN

“No hay escultores solos, pintores, arquitectos solos. El acontecimiento plástico se cumple en una ‘forma única’ al servicio de la poesía”.

El museo Heidi Weber de Zúrich es el último edificio diseñado por Le Corbusier e integra la profusa lista de obras que, cada año, son religiosamente visitadas por los estudiantes de arquitectura de Uruguay en su tradicional viaje. Le Corbusier fue el arquitecto más influyente del siglo XX, sus ideas reinventaron el modo de vivir y su influencia se extendió por todo el mundo. En nuestro país su figura ha despertado desde siempre cierta fascinación y una gran sintonía con su prédica. Mi cita con su obra póstuma fue en el año 2005, el museo estaba cerrado. Abría solamente los meses de verano y para ese entonces la temporada ya se había despedido, así que tuve que conformarme contemplando su escultórica forma desde el paisaje espléndido del parque Zürichhorn, a las orillas del lago de Zúrich, y seguir el viaje con el grupo sin conocer sus espacios interiores: cubos de 2,26 x 2,26 x 2,26 metros, dimensionados con el sistema de medidas “Modulor”, una extensa investigación sobre las relaciones humanas y las matemáticas. En ese momento no podía imaginar que el destino tuviera planeado reparar ese infortunio y que poco tiempo después, por las calles de La Barra de Maldonado, conocería a su mentora.

Heidi Weber gestionaba personalmente el museo desde su apertura en 1964. En los últimos años había decidido abrir las puertas solamente en verano, tiempo que coincidía con su estadía en Zúrich, mientras que el resto del año lo dedicaba a viajar por el mundo dedicando largas estancias en cada destino. Impulsada por la curiosidad que le había provocado la lectura de las notas de Le Corbusier en su viaje a Uruguay en 1929, había decidido visitar nuestro país. Según la coleccionista, instantáneamente quedó cautivada y decidió que sería su próximo destino por un buen tiempo. Le parecía increíble que en un lugar tan lejano, todos los arquitectos no solo conocíeran su museo, sino que además lo hubieran visitado. Me comentó que estaba trabajando en un libro sobre sus 50 años de entusiasmo y tenacidad difundiendo la obra artística de Le Corbusier. Me preguntó si me interesaba, no dudé en contestarle y a los pocos días estaba trabajando junto a ella.

El ritmo de trabajo era intenso y exigente, tenía mucha documentación y una idea clara de la estética y el orden. Dueña de una memoria prodigiosa y una sabiduría natural para encontrarle significado a todas sus historias, cada jornada era un periplo por la historia del arte y la arquitectura del siglo XX. Heidi Weber conoció la obra pictórica de Le Corbusier en 1957, en Zúrich. El deslumbramiento fue inmediato y a partir de ese momento se las ingenió para conocerlo, adquirir la primera obra y así comenzar una estrecha y fructífera relación que incluyó la producción y comercialización de los muebles diseñados por Le Corbusier, la difusión de las pinturas, grabados, litografías, tapices, esmaltes y esculturas.

Y finalmente fue la comitente de la última obra arquitectónica proyectada por Le Corbusier, la “Maison de l’Homme”, museo Heidi Weber de Zúrich.

El museo Reina Sofía de Madrid había realizado una majestuosa muestra de su colección en 2007, la misma había implicado un gran despliegue y esfuerzo. Heidi Weber sentía que esa exhibición había significado la coronación de sus 50 años difundiendo a Le Corbusier como artista universal. Sin embargo, la visible influencia en nuestro país y el gran respeto que sentía que había aquí para el maestro suizo, le hizo replantearse esa decisión y en determinado momento me confesó que no tendría inconveniente en prestar para una muestra en Uruguay toda la obra gráfica de Le Corbusier, que incluía 120 litografías y grabados, y saldar así una deuda con Sudamérica, donde su colección nunca había sido expuesta.

Corría el año 2009. La Fundación Pablo Atchugarry, que ya se perfilaba como un referente cultural regional, era sin duda el lugar indicado. Hablé con Pablo y luego con Heidi, y más tarde nos reunimos los tres. La comunión fue instantánea, yo casi no hablé, fui un espectador entre dos hacedores con una generosidad enorme. Ya se empezaba a vislumbrar que aquel sueño podía realizarse.

Pablo piensa a lo grande y Heidi lo seguía, así que la muestra fue creciendo en contenido, se le agregaron óleos, esculturas, dibujos, tapices y mobiliario, sumándose así 30 nuevos originales. La muestra abarcaría todo el espectro creativo y se llamaría “Le Corbusier – El Artista: Grandes Obras de la Colección Heidi Weber”. La selección se hizo en el museo de Zúrich con la presencia de Pablo, Piero y Silvana. Es un recuerdo inolvidable, recorrer el subsuelo del museo, con la colección privada de Le Corbusier más grande del mundo a nuestros pies, y la menuda tarea de elegir qué piezas llevaríamos a nuestro país.

Mi estadía se extendió y participé en el montaje de la muestra de esa temporada en el museo, llamada “Machines for living”, dedicada al diseño del mobiliario del gran maestro. Allí conocí de primera mano la metodología exhaustiva de Heidi Weber. Todo en el museo había sido diseñado por Le Corbusier, incluido el escritorio en el que preparamos el proyecto de la muestra de Uruguay. Nada podía ser más inspirador.

Heidi pensaba cada detalle manteniendo presente el espíritu de Le Corbusier: el diseño de los marcos, la altura en que se debía colgar cada obra, la disposición de cada dibujo, todo coincidía con las premisas del maestro. El Museo de Zúrich tiene una altura de 2,26 metros por nivel y Heidi quería trasladar esa proporción intimista a la Fundación, por lo que se pintaron las paredes hasta esa altura.

El color del fondo en donde se ubicaba cada obra tenía un tono específico, escogido de la paleta que el artista había diseñado, por

lo que el transporte de las obras incluyó también latas de pintura suiza.

En Zúrich, bajo la atenta supervisión de Heidi Weber, todo había quedado listo. Con la lista definitiva de obras se ajustaron los seguros y el transporte de las 150 piezas. Mientras en Uruguay avanzábamos con el diseño de la grafica, las invitaciones, y el catálogo, las obras cruzaban el océano por primera vez, con destino a Manantiales. Todo transcurrió según lo planeado, en el tiempo previsto arribaron una decena de cajas de madera conteniendo lo que sería la anhelada exposición. Como un ritual, se abrieron las cajas en presencia de la coleccionista, debajo del impecable embalaje aparecían una a una las piezas. Heidi acompañaba cada apertura con el relato preciso de la historia de la obra, cómo la había adquirido, dónde había estado expuesta, o qué millonario había querido comprársela.

El montaje fue realizado de acuerdo al proyecto diseñado en Zúrich y respetado al milímetro.

La oportunidad era además propicia para revisar algunos puntos de contacto entre Le Corbusier y Uruguay. Por ejemplo, coincidía con el aniversario número 80 de su visita al Río de la Plata. El grupo de estudios CEDODAL, capitaneado por los arquitectos Ramón Gutiérrez y Nery González, preparaba la publicación de una minuciosa investigación sobre esa visita. Dicho libro fue presentado en el marco de la muestra y se incluyó en el catálogo una crónica de su mítico periplo por Uruguay.

El arquitecto Justino Serralta vivía en un poblado remoto del norte de Francia, había trabajado en el legendario estudio de la 35 Rue de Sèvres en Paris. La palabra de un uruguayo testigo de la intensidad lecorbuseana era indispensable para hacer justicia con él y con una comunidad académica local que se mantuvo desde los inicios cercana al pensamiento moderno y participó directamente en su desarrollo. El catálogo incluyó una pintoresca entrevista que tuve el honor de realizarle a Serralta en su casa de Julloville. Dicha entrevista ha sido reproducida en la revista de la Sociedad de Arquitectos, el semanario Brecha y, recientemente, en el libro “La parábola de Serralta” de Jorge Patrone.

La muestra fue planificada para dos meses de duración pero se extendió a tres, con toda la logística que ello implica, ampliar seguros, reprogramar transporte, etc., debido a la gran concurrencia y al interés de los centros educativos de toda la región.

Más de 60.000 visitantes pudieron acceder a la faceta menos conocida de Le Corbusier.

El cierre de la muestra se hizo con la presencia de la generación 2010 de la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad de la República.

Allí se reunieron más de 700 estudiantes provenientes de todo el país, que comenzaban la carrera de Arquitectura en las sedes de Montevideo y Salto. Durante todo el día se realizó una jornada abierta de clases, conferencias y talleres donde los estudiantes pudieron tener contacto directo con la obra del gran creador del siglo XX. El profesor Miguel Battegazzore ahondó sobre las características del dibujo activo y conceptual del maestro moderno y a la vez alejado del academicismo de sus antecesores. Explicó la importancia de los viajes en el proceso creativo de Le Corbusier y cómo la influencia de los vuelos en avión se traducía en su preferencia por el dibujo “desde arriba”, así como el viaje a Sudamérica en barco lo inquietó acerca de las dimensiones mínimas de las habitaciones y el funcionalismo del mobiliario. La maratónica jornada finalizó con un taller sobre “El modulor”, una metodología de dimensiones creada por Le Corbusier, en la que Justino Serralta había participado activamente; este sistema era derivado del estudio de las proporciones humanas y su símbolo es un hombre con la mano levantada. Los estudiantes y visitantes a la muestra realizaron la figura en el parque creando una obra de “land art” efímera que permanecerá en el recuerdo de quienes allí estuvieron.

La muestra fue la excusa perfecta para el encuentro y la reflexión sobre la influencia para nuestro país y el mundo contemporáneo de este fenomenal arquitecto, pintor, escultor, urbanista, escritor, editor y diseñador de muebles. Se complementó con un ciclo de música, films, conferencias, seminarios y talleres donde participaron diferentes historiadores, arquitectos y Universidades de la región y el mundo. Buscó presentar a Le Corbusier como un artista universal mostrando el trabajo de sus ideas en diferentes disciplinas, permitiéndonos desde la Fundación Pablo Atchugarry, acceder a la poesía del mundo desde la mirada íntima de un genio.

“There is no such thing as a ‘pure’ sculptor, a ‘pure’ painter or a ‘pure’ architect. The three-dimensional event finds its fulfillment in an artistic whole at the service of poetry”.

Le Corbusier The Heidi Weber Museum in Zurich is the last building designed by Le Corbusier, and it is among the long list of structures that are visited religiously each year by architecture students from Uruguay on their traditional trip. Le Corbusier was the most influential architect of the 20th century. His ideas reinvented the way we live and his influence spread across the world. In our country he has always aroused a degree of fascination and a deep accord with his teachings. I saw his posthumously-completed work in 2005. The museum was closed. It only opened in the summer months, and the season had already ended so I had to make do with observing his sculptural work from the splendid landscape of Zürichhorn Park, on the banks of Lake Zürich, before continuing along on the trip with the group. I didn’t get to see its interior spaces, which are cubes measuring 2.26 x 2.26 x 2.26 meters that were set out using the “Modulor” scale of proportions, a system based on exhaustive study of human relationships and mathematics. At the time I couldn’t imagine that fate planned to rectify this misfortune, and that shortly after, on the streets of La Barra in Maldonado, I would meet his patron.

Heidi Weber had personally managed the museum since it opened in 1964. In the last few years she had decided it would open only in the summer, a season that she spent in Zurich. The rest of the year she traveled the world, staying for long periods in each destination. Driven by the curiosity that had led her to read Le Corbusier’s notes about his trip to Uruguay in 1929, she had decided to visit our country. According to the collector, she was immediately captivated and decided it would be her next destination, and that she would stay for some time. She found it incredible that in a place so far away, all of the architects not only knew her museum but had also visited it. She told me she was working on a book about the 50 years she had spent enthusiastically and tenaciously making Le Corbusier’s artwork known. She asked me if I was interested in the project and I didn’t hesitate to answer. A few days later, I was working with her.

The pace of work was intense and demanding. She had a great deal of documentation and a clear idea of the look and order that she wanted. Blessed with a prodigious memory and a natural wisdom that enabled her to find meaning in all of her stories, every day was a journey through the history of 20th century art and architecture.

Heidi Weber first encountered Le Corbusier’s pictorial work in Zurich in 1957. She was immediately dazzled and from that moment on she contrived to meet him and acquire her first work. It was the beginning of a close and fruitful relationship that included the production and sale of furniture designed by Le Corbusier as well as promotion of his paintings, prints, lithographs, tapestries, enamel work and sculptures.

And finally, she commissioned the last architectural work that Le Corbusier designed, Maison de l’Homme, the Heidi Weber Museum in Zurich.

The Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid had held a magnificent exhibition of her collection in 2007, which entailed an enormous amount of organization and effort. Heidi Weber had considered the exhibition to be the crowning achievement of her 50 years promoting Le Corbusier as an all-around artist. However, the Swiss master’s visible influence on our country and the deep respect she felt existed for him here made her reconsider that notion, and she confessed to me that she would be in no way averse to lending out all of Le Corbusier’s graphic works, which included 120 lithographs and prints, for an exhibition in Uruguay, thereby paying a debt owed to South America, where his collection had never been exhibited.

The year was 2009 and the Pablo Atchugarry Foundation, which was already shaping up to be a regional cultural benchmark, was without a doubt the right place. I spoke to Pablo and then to Heidi, and later on the three of us met. The rapport was instantaneous. I said almost nothing, I was an observer in the presence of two enormously generous ‘doers’. We began to see that this dream could be made a reality.

Pablo thinks big, and Heidi took her cue from him, so the exhibition kept growing in terms of content, coming to encompass oil paintings, sculptures, tapestries and furniture, with 30 new original works added. The exhibition would span the entire creative spectrum and would be called “Le Corbusier – El Artista: Grandes Obras de la Colección Heidi Weber” [Le Corbusier – The Artist: Major Works from the Heidi Weber Collection]. Selection was carried out in the Zurich museum, in the presence of Pablo, Piero and Silvana. It’s an unforgettable memory, wandering around underneath the museum, with the world’s largest private Le Corbusier collection at our feet, faced with the challenging task of choosing which pieces we would take back to our country.

I extended my stay and helped set up that season’s exhibition in the museum. It was called “Machines for Living” and was devoted to the great master’s furniture designs. I became familiar with Heidi Weber’s exhaustive methodology there. Everything in the museum had been designed by Le Corbusier, including the desk where we drew up the project for the exhibition in Uruguay. Nothing could be more inspiring.

Heidi thought about every detail, about staying true to the spirit of Le Corbusier, the design for the frames, the height at which each work should be hung, the placement of each drawing. Everything meshed with the master’s principles. Each level of the Zurich museum is 2.26 meters high. Heidi wanted to transport the intimate feeling of those proportions to the Foundation, so the walls were painted up to that height.

The background color against which each work was displayed had a specific tone, chosen from the palette designed by the artist, so the works were transported along with cans of Swiss paint.

Under Heidi Weber’s watchful supervision, everything was prepared in Zurich. Once the final list of works was complete, insurance and transport were arranged for 150 pieces. Meanwhile, in Uruguay, we made progress with the graphic design, the invitations and the catalog, and the works crossed the ocean for the first time, heading for Manantiales. Everything went according to plan, within the scheduled time frame. Ten wooden crates that held the contents of the eagerly-anticipated exhibition arrived. The crates were opened in a ritual fashion in the collector’s presence, the pieces becoming visible underneath the impeccable packaging. As each one was opened, Heidi told the specific story of the work’s history, how she had acquired it, where it had been exhibited or what millionaire had wanted to buy it from her.

We set up the exhibition according to the project planned in Zurich, respecting every last detail.

It was also a favorable time for us to review some of the points of contact between Le Corbusier and Uruguay. For instance, it was the 80th anniversary of his visit to Río de la Plata. The CEDODAL research group, led by architects Ramón Gutiérrez and Nery González, organized the publication of a detailed study of that visit. The book was presented as part of the exhibition and a chronicle of his legendary trip around Uruguay was included in the catalog.

Architect Justino Serralta lived in a remote town in the north of France, and had worked in the famous studio at number 35 on Rue de Sèvres in Paris. An account from a Uruguayan who had witnessed Le Corbusier’s intensity was essential in order to do justice to him and to a local academic community that had adhered closely to modern thinking from the very beginning, directly participating in its development. The catalog thus included a colorful interview that I had the honor of holding with Serralta in his home in Jullouville . This interview has been reproduced in the journal of the Society of Architects (Sociedad de Arquitectos), the weekly newspaper “Brecha”, and recently, in the book “La parábola de Serralta” by Jorge Patrone.

The exhibition was scheduled to last two months but it was extended to three, with all of the logistical requirements that this implied: extending insurance, rescheduling transport, etc., due to the large turnout and great interest from educational centers across the region. Over 60,000 visitors had a chance to gain insight into the least-known facet of Le Corbusier.

The exhibition closed in the presence of students starting their degrees in 2010 in the Faculty of Architecture at Universidad de la República.

Over 700 students from across the country beginning their degrees in Architecture at the Montevideo and Salto campuses gathered there.

During the event an open day was held featuring classes, lectures and workshops where students had a chance to come into direct contact with the work of the 20th century’s great creator. Teacher Miguel Battegazzore explored the characteristics of the active and conceptual drawings of the master, who was at once modern and removed from the academicism of his predecessors. He explained the importance of travel in Le Corbusier’s creative process, and how the influence of air travel translated into his preference for drawings “from above”. He also described how on his boat trip to South America he was concerned by the minute dimensions of the cabins and the functionalism of the furniture. The marathon-like event ended with a workshop on the “Modulor”, a scale of proportions created by Le Corbusier which Justino Serralta actively collaborated on. The system was derived from a study of human proportions, and the symbol used to represent it is a man with one hand raised. The students and visitors to the exhibition reproduced this figure in the park, creating a fleeting work of “land art” that will live on in the memory of those who were present.

The exhibition was the perfect excuse to meet and reflect on the influence that this phenomenal architect, painter, sculptor, town planner, writer, editor and furniture designer had on our country and on the contemporary world. It was rounded off by a series of music, films, lectures, seminars and workshops in which various historians, architects and universities from all over the region and world took part. My aim was to present Le Corbusier as an all-around artist, showing the work resulting from his ideas in various disciplines and enabling us, via the Pablo Atchugarry Foundation, to gain access the poetry of the world from the intimate perspective of a genius.

EL NIÑO QUE PESCA SUEÑOS PENTAGRAMADOS

Dos patas tiene una de las políticas más sorprendentes que Pablo Atchugarry aplica en su Fundación: los artistas contratados deben cobrar dignamente siempre, y el público no debe pagar nunca. Esa actitud no surge en Pablo como un dedo acusador contra quienes, desde el dogmatismo por aquí y desde el elitismo por allá, viven de espaldas a la gente. Es, en cambio, el resultado de un sentimiento primario y, por lo tanto, innegociable.

Resultado de lo cual son las multitudes que en estos diez años han desfilado por Manantiales para ver al Ballet Nacional del Sodre dirigido por Julio Bocca, para escuchar una gala especial con algunos de los mejores cantantes del Teatro Colón, para disfrutar a pocos metros de distancia del violín sabio y delicado de Rafael Gintoli o para fascinarse por primera o décima vez con Jaime Roos y con Rubén Rada, dos de las joyas más valiosas en la historia de la música popular rioplatense.

Uno puede quejarse de lo engorroso que es estacionar para llegar allí, con esas mareas humanas que tiran el auto donde pueden e inician una peregrinación ritual, pero cuando ve cuánta gente de todas las edades y de todas las clases sociales se acuesta en el parque, se sienta en el pasto o lleva sus propias sillas de playa para prepararse para una jornada única, termina de comprender el espíritu que anima a Pablo.

“Aunque hay algunos eventos privados que han permitido que pasaran por la Fundación artistas relevantes, desde Jorge Drexler hasta integrantes de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Israel, nuestra política es que los eventos que organicemos sean gratuitos”, explica el escultor. Y agrega: “En realidad, todo lo que organizamos, desde los conciertos hasta los talleres y las exposiciones, es gratuito, y esto es así porque personalmente creo que el acceso a la cultura, para ser verdaderamente democrático, no puede tener trabas”.

Concluye Pablo: “Los niños de las escuelas rurales que nos visitan, por ejemplo, se inician en este mundo dibujando o pintando en la Fundación, escuchando un concierto o viendo por primera vez una escultura, jugando en un taller didáctico o corriendo por el parque como si todo fuera la prolongación lúdica de un acceso a las artes que tratamos que sea cómodo, natural y sencillo”.

No es de extrañar, entonces, que un referente de la electrónica mundial llene el anfiteatro de jóvenes pocos días después de que miles y miles de personas vean al Ballet Nacional del Sodre, o de que un público más pequeño pero igualmente ávido asista religiosamente a cada concierto del Festival de Piano que dirige Raquel Boldorini.

No es irregular encontrarse en la Fundación con algunos de los gestores culturales más importantes de las Américas. Pero, por más encantados que estén, el premio es para la gente común, esa que hace que “Música entre Naturaleza y Arte” haya nacido como un bello título y se haya convertido en un ciclo emblemático para toda la península.

En una de sus canciones más hermosas, Drexler, el uruguayo ganador del Oscar que se ha convertido en uno de los músicos más prestigiosos de Hispanoamérica, dice: “Te salgo a buscar, quimera/ Mariposa de papel/ Te pienso seguir buscando la vida entera/ Soy un pescador de sueños/ soy un catador de auroras/ No cuento más que con mi empeño/ Y esta pluma voladora”.

El idilio de Pablo con la música también nació de esa materia hecha de anhelos improbables, acaso porque tiempo atrás, en la vigilia de otra vida imaginaria, repitió tercamente estas palabras, antes de que Drexler las juntara en otra canción: “Es más mío lo que sueño que lo que toco”.

THE BOY WHO FISHES FOR DREAMS WRAPPED IN MUSICAL STAVES

Under a two-pronged policy which is one of the most surprising of those implemented by Pablo Atchugarry in his Foundation, artists under contract must always earn a decent wage and the general public should never pay. This attitude hasn’t arisen in Pablo like an accusatory finger pointing at those who, with some dogmatism here and a bit of elitism there, turn their backs on the people. Rather, it is the result of a feeling that’s inherent, and thus non-negotiable.

Over the past ten years, crowds of people have thus paraded through Manantiales to see the SODRE National Ballet of Uruguay directed

by Julio Bocca, to listen to a special gala featuring some of Teatro Colón’s best singers, to enjoy the wise and delicate violin of Rafael Gintoli at a distance of just a few yards, or to be fascinated for the first or the tenth time by Jaime Roos and by Rubén Rada, two of the greatest treasures in the history of Río de la Plata’s folk music.

You could complain about what a hassle it is to park and reach the site, with the human tides that pull the car every which way and set out on a ritual pilgrimage, but when you see how many people of all ages, from all social classes, lie down in the park, sit on the grass or bring their own beach chairs in preparation for a unique day, you’ll understand the spirit that drives Pablo.

“Although there are some private events for which the foundation has welcomed important artists, from Jorge Drexler to the musicians of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, our policy is for the events that we organize to be free”, explains the sculptor. He adds: “Actually, everything we organize is free, from concerts to workshops and exhibitions, and that’s because I personally believe that to be truly democratic, access to culture must be unfettered”.

Pablo concludes: “Children from the rural schools that visit us, for instance, are initiated into this world by drawing or painting in the Foundation, listening to a concert or seeing a sculpture for the first time, playing in an educational workshop or running through the park as if it were all a fun extension of an access to the arts which we try to make comfortable, natural and simple”.

It’s not surprising, then, for a prominent global electronica artist to fill the amphitheater with teenagers just days after thousands and thousands of people watch the SODRE National Ballet of Uruguay, or for a smaller but equally avid audience to religiously attend every concert in the Piano Festival directed by Raquel Boldorini.

It’s not unusual to encounter some of the most important cultural managers in the Americas in the Foundation. However, as delighted as they may be, the real prize is for the common people, those who enabled “Music Between Nature and Art” to be created with such a beautiful name and to become an iconic series for the entire peninsula.

In one of his most beautiful songs, Drexler, the Uruguayan artist who won an Oscar and has become one of Hispanic America’s most prestigious musicians, sings: “I go to search for you, chimera/ Paper butterfly/ I plan to keep searching for you all my life/ I’m a dream fisherman/ I’m a taster of dawns/ I’ve got nothing more than my determination/ And this flying pen” (“Te salgo a buscar, quimera/ Mariposa de papel/ Te pienso seguir buscando la vida entera/ Soy un pescador de sueños/ soy un catador de auroras/ No cuento más que con mi empeño/ Y esta pluma voladora”).

Pablo’s romance with music was also born of this material made of improbable longings, perhaps because some time ago, in the sleeplessness of another imaginary life, he stubbornly repeated these words before Drexler put them together in another song: “What I dream is more mine than what I touch” (“Es más mío lo que sueño que lo que toco”).

MÁS QUE UNA FUNDACIÓN: TAMBIÉN UN LABORATORIO DE ACTIVIDADES HEURÍSTICAS

Quienes acceden a la Fundación Atchugarry se encuentran con esta significativa frase estampada a la derecha de su entrada. No es una frase inocente. Antes bien, se trata de una afirmación que nos remite a los fundamentos más profundos que motivan a Pablo Atchugarry no solo como creador, sino que subyace e impulsa todos sus variopintos emprendimientos culturales.

Esta proclama sostiene que es preciso resguardar esa primera instancia vital en la que el niño se siente uno con el mundo y tomar esa simbiosis como ejemplar, como estímulo para sustentar toda la educación. Y no con una finalidad exclusivamente estética, sino proyectarla y hacerla extensiva ejemplarmente a todos los dominios de la actividad humana.

Ella estimula, por una parte, la diversidad de manifestaciones artísticas, nacionales e internacionales, que se suceden pautando las temporadas veraniegas en la Fundación Atchugarry, tanto en las salas de exposiciones como en los espacios al aire libre, en el Parque de Esculturas y en el auditorio.

La indiscriminada variedad de estas manifestaciones evidencia la vocación de insobornable libertad del arte, sin limitación de autores, géneros, disciplinas del presente o del pasado, implícitamente determinadas por ese postulado que propone Pablo Atchugarry a los visitantes de la Fundación.

Pero más allá de esas notorias y multitudinarias manifestaciones artísticas podemos comprobar cómo, al margen de la temporada de verano, se despliega en la Fundación un período más reservado de actividades que, no por ser menos llamativo, deja de ser fecundo, y que esencialmente traduce en hechos el contenido de ese epígrafe que acoge a los visitantes a la Fundación: actividades docentes que se desarrollan en salones reservados exclusivamente a actividades didácticas destinadas a niños escolares y jóvenes adolescentes liceales. Más allá de la temporada veraniega, más allá del tumulto de los turistas, sucede la llegada y partida de los ómnibus que trasladan contingentes de niños y adolescentes, maestros y profesores de todos los rincones del país, para encontrarse e intercambiar experiencias con creadores y expertos locales y provenientes de todo el mundo; se encuentran con un verdadero laboratorio de actividades heurísticas que apuesta a la práctica interactiva de toda clase de actividades de libre expresión, pintura, escultura, cerámica, música. Un lugar concebido y acondicionado, exclusivamente, para el encuentro de creadores, artistas, maestros y docentes con niños y adolescentes, propiciando su interacción, facilitando para ello un ambiente propicio poniendo a su disposición toda clase de instalaciones, materiales y útiles para la puesta en práctica de dichas actividades.

Ya no se trata aquí de apreciar ni de practicar exclusivamente el arte sino, más precisamente, de una puesta en práctica de la educación por la ejemplaridad del arte. Una oportunidad única de participación de esa dimensión de libertad que le es propia y apuntalarla para que no se pierda contacto con ese período de indiferenciación del yo con el mundo que todos poseemos en la infancia y que, como muy bien lo expresara nuestro maestro don Joaquín Torres García, nos permite sintonizar con la esencialidad cósmica que se encuentra en la base de la creatividad en todos los registros de la actividad humana (y no solamente en el artístico), que no busca propiciar tan solo circunstancias caprichosas o hedonistas de inspiración momentánea sino la creatividad permanente de toda una vida proyectada a la sociedad.

MORE THAN A FOUNDATION: ALSO A LABORATORY FOR HEURISTIC ACTIVITIES

“We can all be artists if we hold onto the child that lives inside us.”

Those who attend the Atchugarry Foundation find this meaningful sentence stamped on the right-hand side of their tickets. It’s not just an innocuous sentence. On the contrary, it’s a statement that evokes the deepest principles that not only motivate Pablo Atchugarry as an artist but also underpin and drive all of his diverse cultural endeavors.

This proclamation asserts that we must safeguard that first stage of life when a child feels at one with the world, taking that symbiosis as an example, as a stimulus to sustain all learning. And not for purely aesthetic purposes, but rather to project and extend it to all domains of human activity as an example.

It stimulates, on the one hand, the diversity of national and international expressions of art that shape the summer seasons at the Atchugarry Foundation, in the exhibition halls and in the outdoor spaces, in the sculpture park and the auditorium.

The indiscriminate variety of these expressions is illustrative of a vocation of incorruptible artistic freedom, unlimited by artist, genre or disciplines of the past or present, implicitly determined by the tenet espoused by Pablo Atchugarry to the Foundation’s visitors.

But beyond these renowned expressions of art which draw large crowds, we see how outside the summer season a period reserved more for activities unfolds in the Foundation. This period, though less conspicuous, is nonetheless fruitful, and essentially translates the content of that statement that welcomes the Foundation’s visitors into facts: educational activities held in rooms reserved exclusively for teaching activities aimed at schoolchildren and high school students. Beyond the summer season, beyond the hustle and bustle of the tourists, there is the arrival and departure of the buses that transport groups of children and teenagers, teachers and professors from all over the country to meet and exchange experiences with creators and experts from the local area and from around the world. They encounter a veritable laboratory of heuristic activities committed to the interactive practice of all sorts of activities devoted to free expression, painting, sculpture, ceramics and music. A place designed and equipped exclusively for a coming together of creators, artists, teachers and instructors with children and teenagers, fostering their interaction, providing a setting conducive to this end and making all sorts of facilities, materials and tools available to them for the purpose of conducting these activities.

The aim here is not to appreciate or engage exclusively in the practice of art, but rather a practical implementation of education through the exemplarity of art. A unique opportunity to participate in the dimension of freedom characteristic to it and to shore it up so that we don’t lose contact with that period when the “me” is indistinguishable from the world, which we all go through in childhood and which, as our master artist Joaquín Torres García so aptly stated, allows us to be in harmony with the cosmic essentialness that is at the heart of creativity in all spheres of human activity (not only the artistic), which seeks to foster not only capricious or hedonistic instances of momentary inspiration, but rather permanent, lifelong creativity projected out to society.

“Lo más importante que aprendí de la naturaleza es aceptar el ciclo vital. Me acuerdo de que cuando era chico tenía muchos animales domésticos, una pasión que heredé de mi madre: patos, conejos, pájaros, gallinas y ovejas. Y cuando se moría un animalito, yo lloraba inconteniblemente. Hasta que aprendí que no podía existir la vida sin la muerte y fui entendiendo que formamos parte de un todo más grande”. Así recuerda la parte más idílica de su infancia Pablo Atchugarry, cuya alma es panteísta mucho antes de saber que esa palabra –“panteísmo”- formaba parte del diccionario. Y lo es con la espontaneidad de quien, acaso por concebirse como un punto invisible en el infinito, no tiene tiempo para tomarse demasiado en serio ni para dejar a la Madre Tierra abandonada a las buenas de Dios.

“No dejaremos huella” –dice un tema-, “solo polvo de estrellas”. Cuánta razón detrás de esa máxima que nos interpela cada vez con mayor urgencia. Y pensar que cuando el brasileño Erasmo Carlos les dedicaba sus mejores canciones a las ballenas antes que a las ideologías que han sembrado de muertos el mundo, lo acusaban de tibio o de romántico.

Con suficiente agua bajo el puente, no hay más que ver lo que ha ocurrido a nuestro alrededor con tantas especies extinguidas, con tanto suelo marino mancillado y tantos glaciares derretidos, con tanto plástico, tantas baterías y tanto recalentamiento vaciando nuestros pulmones de oxígeno y llenándolos de zinc, de smog y de basura, para comprender que el cuidado de nuestra casa común, por el que sabiamente bregó el Papa Francisco en la encíclica “Laudato si”, no es solo parte esencial de la causa humanista sino, lisa y llanamente, un requisito imprescindible para, tal como advierte Stephen Hawking, no quedarnos sin universo dentro de cien años.

“Debido a una explotación inconsiderada de la naturaleza, el ser humano corre el riesgo de destruirla y de ser a su vez víctima de esta destrucción”, escribió en 1971 Pablo VI. Y Francisco, luego de citarlo, rinde tributo a Francisco de Asís “Su testimonio nos muestra también que una ecología integral requiere apertura hacia categorías que trasciendan el lenguaje de las matemáticas o de la biología y nos conecten con la esencia de lo humano. Así como sucede cuando nos enamoramos de una persona, cada vez que él miraba el sol, la luna o los más pequeños animales, su reacción era cantar, incorporando en su alabanza a las demás criaturas”.

Agrega el Santo Padre:“Francisco” entraba en comunicación con todo lo creado, y hasta predicaba a las flores ‘invitándolas a alabar al Señor, como si gozaran del don de la razón’. Su reacción era mucho más que una valoración intelectual o un cálculo económico, porque para él cualquier criatura era una hermana, unida a él con lazos de cariño. Por eso se sentía llamado a cuidar todo lo que existe”.

No puede ser gratuita una evocación como esta para nadie que conozca a Pablo, que en las 159 hectáreas que ocupan el Parque de Esculturas, la reserva natural y la Galería Piero Atchugarry en Garzón, Maldonado, practica un misticismo políticamente incorrecto en homenaje a María Cristina Bonomi.

“Mi madre querida, que para mí es más presencia que ausencia”, dirá seguramente él recorriendo ese verde perpetuo en el que confluyen garzas, patos, ñandúes, pájaros de los más variados tipos, liebres, gallinas, caballos, conejos y pavos reales, áreas vírgenes y cañadas, tajamares y humedales, diez mil plantas autóctonas y dos mil palmeras pindó y otras dos mil palmeras butia, arazás que crecen como enredaderas salvajes, árboles para regocijo de las aves, de la vista y del alma. Y, como en un proyecto fecundo que no termina de acabarse, un horizonte que nos anima a mirar más allá. Más allá de Dios, que no nos regala tablets sino tulipanes, y más allá también del Hombre.

El hombre, aunque en minúscula, es aquí Pablo Atchugarry y, sobre todo, Piero Atchugarry, dueño de una enorme sensibilidad personal y artística, curador de estilo definitivamente desmarcado de su padre y, a su vez, socio y amigo del escultor en esa otra Madre Tierra que es la familia que forma con Silvana y con su hermana Catherine.

Porque mientras Pablo construye un pabellón de arte latinoamericano con un salón exclusivo para Wifredo Díaz Valdéz en Manantiales, Piero hace lo propio con su galería en Garzón, estableciendo un desafiante programa de residencias para artistas de todas las nacionalidades para los que, como ocurría con los impresionistas, la única obligación es amar el aire libre. Todo como una involuntaria continuación de “Almuerzo sobre la hierba”, la obra maestra de Manet que Pablo mirará con los ojos geométricos de quien concibe el universo en tres dimensiones, y sobre la que Piero no podrá menos que filtrar el apasionamiento por la contemporaneidad bien entendida. Una contemporaneidad minimalista que, como enseña el trabajo de Artur Lescher, interpreta la realidad sin caer en la desesperanza ni en el seguidismo a Marcel Duchamp.

Y usted, en definitiva el único protagonista de toda esta historia, es quien puede terminar de completar ese sueño quijotesco que los Atchugarry tienen en Garzón, ese espacio irreal de libertad y reflexión por fuera de la histeria urbana, esa persistente invitación que nos dice que, para conocer el arte del fin del mundo, antes hay que conocer sus costumbres y, sobre todo, su fauna, su flora, sus grillos cantores, sus caballos de mar, sus mariposas milagrosas y sus comadrejas malditas, que deliberadamente alguien antes que nosotros, usurpadores de un célebre inquilinato en ruinas, los puso allí. Verdad, ¿Piero?

FRANCIS OF ASSISI, URUGUAY, 2017

“The most important thing I learned from nature is to accept the cycle of life. I remember when I was a boy I had a lot of pets, a passion I inherited from my mother: ducks, rabbits, birds, chickens and sheep. And when an animal died, I would cry inconsolably. Until I learned that life couldn’t exist without death, and I began to understand that we are part of a larger whole”. That’s how Pablo Atchugarry remembers the most idyllic part of his childhood. He had a pantheistic soul long before he knew that the word “pantheism” existed in the dictionary. And he’s pantheistic with the spontaneity of someone who, perhaps because he conceives of himself as an invisible dot in the infinite, doesn’t have time to take himself too seriously, or to abandon Mother Earth to God’s hands.

“We won’t leave a trace, only stardust”, go the lyrics to a song (“No dejaremos huella, solo polvo de estrellas”). There’s so much truth behind that adage, which challenges us with increasing urgency. And to think that when Brazilian artist Erasmo Carlos devoted his best songs to whales rather than the ideologies that have reaped so much death in the world, they accused him of being apathetic or romantic.

With enough water under the bridge, we need only look at has happened around us, with so many species gone extinct, with so much of the ocean floor ruined and so many glaciers melted, with so much plastic, so many batteries and so much global warming emptying our lungs of oxygen and filling them with zinc, smog and waste, in order to understand that caring for our shared home, which Pope Francis wisely pleaded for us to do in the encyclical “Laudato si”, is not only an essential part of the humanist cause but, clearly and simply, a prerequisite if we don’t want, as Stephen Hawking warns, to find ourselves without a universe in a hundred years.

“Due to an ill-considered exploitation of nature, humanity runs the risk of destroying it and becoming in turn a victim of this degradation”, wrote Pope Paul VI in 1971. And Pope Francis, after quoting him, pays tribute to Francis of Assisi: “Francis helps us to see that an integral ecology calls for openness to categories which transcend the language of mathematics and biology, and take us to the heart of what it is to be human. Just as happens when we fall in love with someone, whenever he would gaze at the sun, the moon or the smallest of animals, he burst into song, drawing all other creatures into his praise”.

The Holy Father adds: “Francis communed with all creation, even preaching to the flowers, inviting them ‘to praise the Lord, just as if they were endowed with reason’. His response to the world around him was so much more than intellectual appreciation or economic calculus, for to him each and every creature was a sister united to him by bonds of affection. That is why he felt called to care for all that exists”.

An evocation such as this cannot be unwarranted for anyone who knows Pablo, who on the 159 hectares occupied by his Sculpture Park, natural reserve and the Piero Atchugarry Gallery in Garzón, Maldonado, practices a politically incorrect mysticism that pays homage to María Cristina Bonomi.

“My dear mother, who for me is more present than absent”, he would surely say, traveling over the perpetual green that is home to herons, ducks, rheas, birds of all sorts, hares, hens, horses, rabbits and peacocks, unspoiled areas, glens, levees and marshes, ten thousand indigenous plants, two thousand queen palms and another two thousand jelly palms, arazás that grow like wild vines, trees that delight birds and strike joy into our eyes and souls. And, like a fruitful project as yet unfinished, a horizon that encourages us to look at what lies beyond. Beyond God, who doesn’t gift us with tablets but rather tulips, and beyond Man, too.

Here man, although in lowercase letters, is Pablo Atchugarry and, especially, Piero Atchugarry, who is possessed of an enormous personal and artistic awareness, a curator with a style completely distinct from that of his father, and in turn, a partner and friend to the sculptor on that other Mother Earth that is the family that he forms with Silvana and his sister Catherine.

Because while Pablo is building a Latin American art pavilion with an exclusive hall for Wifredo Díaz Valdéz in Manantiales, Piero is doing the same with his gallery in Garzón, establishing a challenging program of residencies for artists of all nationalities for whom, as was the case for the Impressionists, the only requirement is a love of the outdoors. And all of this as an involuntary continuation of “The Luncheon on the Grass”, the masterpiece by Manet that Pablo would view with the geometric eyes of someone who conceives the universe in three dimensions, and which Piero couldn’t help but filter through a passion for contemporaneity in the positive sense of the word. A minimalist contemporaneity which, as Artur Lescher’s work shows us, interprets reality without falling into despair or taking its cue from Marcel Duchamp.

And you, ultimately the sole protagonist of this entire story, are the one who can finish off the quixotic dream that the Atchugarrys have in Garzón, that unreal space of freedom and reflection outside of the urban frenzy, that persistent invitation that tells us that in order to know the art of the end of the world, first you must know its customs and, in particular, its flora, its fauna, its singing crickets, its seahorses, its miraculous butterflies and its wretched weasels, which someone who came before us, usurpers of a notorious tenancy in ruins, deliberately placed there.

UN PUENTE PARA EL MUNDO INFINITO

A muchos ha sorprendido la noticia de que muy pronto la Fundación Pablo Atchugarry abrirá sus puertas en Miami. Cuando esa sorpresa inicial pase, quedarán los cimientos de un sueño que es continuación natural de aquel otro surgido en Manantiales, al que desde fines de 2018 unirá un sutil pero inquebrantable cordón de luz.

Será esa la fecha en que, coincidiendo con Art Basel, se inaugurará la Fundación Atchugarry de Florida, Estados Unidos, un proyecto que se conoció públicamente por primera vez en agosto de 2017.

Fue durante un almuerzo pequeño pero encantador en que, con Pablo como anfitrión, Manantiales recibió al alcalde de Miami, Tomás Regalado, quien improvisó un cálido discurso en el cual elogió la imprescindible pata social de la Fundación y, consciente del lugar de privilegio que esta pasaría a ocupar, recalcó que, precisamente, Miami se ha convertido gracias al arte no solo en una ciudad más próspera y más original sino, sobre todo, más humana.

En la intersección de la Calle 54 y la Cuarta Avenida del barrio de Little Haiti se instalará el Atchugarry Art Center, un complejo artístico con 1200 metros cuadrados edificados en un total de 2500, donde funcionará la Fundación Pablo Atchugarry por un lado y, por otro, la Galería Piero Atchugarry.

Un extenso parking y una zona especial para exposiciones al aire libre integrarán esta propuesta con la que Pablo pretende no solo mantener el espíritu que inspira a la Fundación original sino profundizarlo de tal manera que un viajero pueda estar en Miami o en Manantiales y, más allá de las diferencias geográficas y de los inocultables pintoresquismos, respirar el mismo aire.

En una entrevista que hasta hace pocos meses permaneció inédita por haber sido censurada por la dictadura uruguaya, Jorge Luis Borges declaró: “Los estoicos dijeron aquello que sin dudas escandalizó a todos, de que un hombre no era ciudadano de Atenas o ciudadano de Mileto o ciudadano de Tebas, no, que un hombre es ciudadano del mundo. Y yo creo que debemos sentirnos ciudadanos del mundo y olvidar, como sin duda se olvidarán, los diversos colores que se marcan en los mapas”.

Pasaron décadas desde entonces y el universo se empeña en negar la integración multicultural como una de las formas más acabadas del humanismo. Pero Pablo no reproducirá esas miserias en su microcosmos norteamericano, que estará en una ciudad donde su obra ocupa tantas colecciones privadas y tantos sitios públicos de privilegio, y donde la presencia latinoamericana tiñe todas las manifestaciones culturales.

Permitirá la Fundación Atchugarry de Miami que una idea largamente madurada florezca en un ambiente ideal para variados intercambios, desde residencias hasta exposiciones de artistas de todos los países imaginables incluyendo al Uruguay, que en materia plástica sigue replicando el milagro futbolístico según el cual hay una cantidad de talento desproporcional a la población del que deriva.

En ese espacio fecundo para el intercambio de ideas y para terminar de construir un puente para el mundo infinito, el espectador sentirá la calidez con que Pablo y Silvana tiñen lo que les es propio, pero también terminará de darle sentido –¿qué sería, después de todo, del arte, sin la sensibilidad y la significación de la gente?- a un edificio que, como el Guggenheim de Bilbao o el Louvre de Abu Dhabi, abrirá nuevos caminos partiendo de un camino conocido.

En uno de los pasajes más hermosos de la novela “Bomarzo”, ganadora junto a “Rayuela” del Premio John F. Kennedy y transformada en ópera por Alberto Ginastera, Manuel Mujica Láinez escribe, como si se tratara del duque Pier Francesco Orsini: “Soñé que estaba en un parque rocoso, poblado de enormes esculturas… Y en medio de los monstruos, los dragones, los titanes, que emergían de la fronda, experimentaba un alivio maravilloso. Me perdía entre ellos como en una floresta encantada, y aunque los demás temían a su ejército fantasmal, yo los amaba, amaba a mis monstruos de piedra, porque solo rodeado por su guardia, por sus zarpas, por sus fauces, por sus colosales esqueletos agrietados, sería capaz de seguir viviendo, viviendo, viviendo eternamente”.

Orsini falleció en 1585, pero a siglos de distancia hay un uruguayo que no pide permiso para compartir su inspiración romántica. Y, como subrayaba el ex presidente Julio María Sanguinetti en el prólogo de este libro, tampoco pide permiso para regalar uno de los atributos más extraños en un artista exitoso: la generosidad.

Nada que agregar, excepto esto: gracias, Pablo.

A BRIDGE FOR THE INFINITE WORLD

Many people were surprised by the news that very soon the Pablo Atchugarry Foundation will open its doors in Miami. When the initial surprise wears off, what will remain is the groundwork for a dream that is a natural continuation of the one that began in Manantiales, and the two will be joined together by a fine but unbreakable cord of light from late 2018 onwards.

The grand opening of the Atchugarry Foundation in Florida, USA will take place at that time, coinciding with Art Basel. The project was publicly announced for the first time in August 2017.

During a small but delightful lunch hosted by Pablo, Manantiales welcomed the mayor of Miami, Tomás Regalado, who improvised a warm speech praising the crucial social aspect of the Foundation. Aware of the prime location that the Foundation was to enjoy, he stressed that art had not only made Miami a more prosperous and original city, but above all, a more human one.

The Atchugarry Art Center will set up shop at the intersection of 54th Street and 4th Avenue in the neighborhood of Little Haiti. The artistic complex will have a construction floor area of 13,000 square feet and a gross floor area of 27,000 square feet, and will be the base of operation of the Pablo Atchugarry Foundation as well as the Piero Atchugarry Gallery.

A large parking lot and a special area for open-air exhibits will round off the project, with which Pablo aims not only to keep the spirit that inspires the original Foundation alive but also to strengthen it, enabling a visitor to be in Miami or Manantiales and, beyond the geographic differences and scenic details that cannot be concealed, to breath the very same air.

In an interview that remained unpublished until a few months ago after being censored during the dictatorship in Uruguay, Jorge Luis Borges stated: “The Stoics said something that no doubt scandalized everybody: that a man was not a citizen of Athens or a citizen of Miletus or a citizen of Thebes, no, that a man is a citizen of the world. And I believe that we should feel ourselves to be citizens of the world and forget, as they will undoubtedly be forgotten, the different colors drawn on maps”.

Decades have passed since then, and the universe insists on rejecting multicultural integration as one of the most complete forms of humanism. But Pablo will not reproduce these woes in his North American microcosm, which will be located in a city where his work graces so many private collections and prime public spaces, and where the Latin American presence colors all forms of cultural expression.

The Atchugarry Foundation in Miami will enable an idea that was a long time in the making to flourish in an ideal setting for a diverse range of exchanges, from residencies to exhibitions by artists from every country imaginable, including Uruguay, a country which in the field of the visual arts continues to replicate the soccer miracle, whereby there is a disproportionate amount of talent for the population that produces it.

In this fertile space for the exchange of ideas and in which to finish building a bridge for the infinite world, the observer will feel the warmth with which Pablo and Silvana infuse everything that is theirs, but it will also ultimately lend meaning –what would art be, after all, without people’s sensitivity and without any significance to them?– to a building which, like the Guggenheim in Bilbao or the Louvre in Abu Dhabi, will use a path we’re already familiar with to forge new ones.

In one of the most beautiful passages in the novel “Bomarzo”, which along with “Rayuela” won the John F. Kennedy Prize and was made into an opera by Alberto Ginastera, Manuel Mujica Láinez writes, from the perspective of Duke Pier Francesco Orsini: “I dreamed that I was in a rocky park, populated by enormous sculptures… And in the midst of the monsters, the dragons, the titans who were emerging from the bushes, I felt a wonderful relief. I lost myself among them as if in an enchanted glade, and although others feared their ghostly army, I loved them, I loved my monsters of rock, because only surrounded by their guard, by their claws, by their jaws, by their colossal fractured skeletons would I be able to keep on living, living eternally”.

Orsini died in 1585, but centuries down the line there is a man from Uruguay who doesn’t ask for permission to share his romantic inspiration.

And, as former president Julio María Sanguinetti points out in the prologue to the book, neither does he ask for permission to give us the gift of one of the rarest of attributes in a successful artist: generosity.

There’s nothing further to add, except this: thank you, Pablo.

MUNDO DE FUEGO

“El fuego funde el bronce y lo une a una nueva vida”

Originariamente se usaba la cera de abeja; hoy existen otros materiales que la suplen, como la parafina, el látex o la silicona. El modelo elaborado en cera mencionado anteriormente se forra con un material que sea maleable pero que endurezca despacio (puede ser escayola o arcilla) y debe ser refractario, es decir, que resista la acción del fuego sin alterarse. Se aplican tantas capas como sea necesario para crear un molde hermético, de una sola pieza.

Posteriormente se colocan soportes (clavos) de acero que se introducen en el modelo de cera para que quede sujeto al molde y se abren pequeños orificios, llamados bebederos, que atraviesan el molde y por los cuales saldrá la cera.

Para obtener una escultura “hueca” se vierte por el orificio principal una pequeña cantidad de cera que queda adherida a las paredes del molde, cubriendo por completo su superficie interna; se pueden verter varias capas para obtener un mayor grosor de la futura capa de bronce. El interior sigue quedando vacío y se rellena con una sustancia que va a actuar de negativo, una solución de ladrillo poroso molido y escayola, por lo que al endurecer queda un alma ligera pero maciza y resistente, sujeta por los clavos del molde, de modo que no se mueve y no deforma la cera. El molde, convertido en un bloque sólido y resistente, ya se puede llevar al horno de mufla (un tipo de horno que protege las piezas de la llama directa y de los gases de combustión).

Al introducir el molde en la mufla, en posición invertida, la cera se derrite y sale por los bebederos o por el orificio principal, pero el negativo queda fijado por los clavos manteniendo la misma separación y disposición y dejando un hueco homogéneo entre el alma y el molde. Este hueco es el que será rellenado por el bronce licuado al ser vertido por el orificio principal.

Los metales disminuyen su volumen al solidificarse, por lo que, para evitar que se produzcan cavidades al contraerse el metal que conforma la pieza final, la solidificación ha de comenzar en las partes de menor tamaño y más alejadas de los bebederos y continuar de forma gradual hacia los respiradores que facilitan la salida de aire, asegurando que no queden burbujas ni restos de cera o escayola.

El proceso puede llegar a durar desde decenas de horas a varios días, dependiendo tanto del tamaño de la figura como del espesor de la misma.

“Fire melts bronze and joins it to a new life”

To cast a bronze sculpture, the process begins with the creation of a provisional wax model of the artist’s design. Wax is used because of its texture. Ductile and soft, it’s therefore malleable and can be melted, enabling it to be easily modeled.

Beeswax was originally used, but today other materials have replaced it such as paraffin wax, latex and silicone. The aforementioned wax model is coated with a material that is malleable but will slowly harden, for instance plaster or clay. The material must be refractory, i.e. able to resist fire without undergoing any changes. As many layers as necessary are applied to create a hermetic mold consisting of one single piece.

Anchors (pins) made of steel are then driven into the wax model to attach it to the outer mold, and small openings called sprues are made which act as channels through which the wax can escape.

To create a “hollow” sculpture from a mold, a small amount of wax is poured through its main opening to coat its inner walls, completely covering the surface. Various layers can be poured to increase the thickness of what will end up being the layer of bronze. The inner space remains empty and is filled with a substance that acts as a negative, a porous ground brick and plaster solution, which upon hardening creates a light but solid and resistant core, held in place by the mold’s pins, ensuring it doesn’t move and deform the wax. The mold, which has been transformed into a solid and resistant block, is now ready to be taken to the muffle furnace (a type of furnace that protects the pieces from the furnace’s direct flame and combustion gases).

When the mold is placed upside down in the muffle furnace, the wax melts and pours out through the sprues or the main opening, but the negative remains fixed in place by the pins, maintaining the same separation and distribution and leaving a uniform space between the core and the mold. This space is then filled with liquid bronze, which is poured in through the main opening.

Metals lose volume upon solidifying, so to prevent cavities from forming when the metal of the final piece contracts, solidification must start in the smallest parts that are furthest away from the sprues, gradually progressing towards the vents that enable air to escape, ensuring that no bubbles or traces of wax or plaster remain.

The process can take anywhere from dozens of hours to several days, depending on the size and thickness of the sculpture.
