Carissimo Pablo, la tua importanza di artista è ormai riconosciuta nel mondo e mostrare le tue meravigliose sculture nella mia galleria di Venezia è un onore.

A volte mi soffermo a pensare se sia più importante ciò che realizzi o l’uomo ATCHUGARRY. Sicuramente le due cose sono strettamente collegate.

Sono certo che anche questa mostra sarà un grande successo sia per te che per la mia galleria e che potremo così fare un lunghissimo viaggio insieme.

La mostra presenta al pubblico un’attenta selezione di più di venti opere, di materiali e dimensioni diverse, che tracciano l’evolversi della produzione artistica di Pablo Atchugarry dalla metà degli anni Novanta ad oggi.

This exhibition presents a selection of more than twenty works of art made of diverse materials and varying dimensions, tracing the evolution of the artist’s work from the latter half of the nineties through today.

Atchugarry propone composizioni ascensionali che combinano l’ispirazione classica con una resa assolutamente contemporanea. Il suo è un linguaggio plastico, suadente e poetico, distintivo ed inedito, che si esprime attraverso una scultura dinamica dal forte impatto visivo. Il sapiente intrecciarsi delle linee e lo svilupparsi inaspettato dei volumi rivelano la maestria dell’artista nel plasmare la materia, che si fa così portavoce di quel messaggio personalissimo, seppur universale, di armonia e bellezza che è l’opera di Atchugarry.

Atchugarry proposes masterpieces which combine classic inspiration with an absolute contemporary rendering. The interpretation of his plastic art is soothing and poetic, distinctive and unedited, which he expresses through dynamic sculpture which creates a strong visual impact. The skillful intertwining of lines and the unexpected expansion of volume reveals his artistry to mould the material as a voice for a very personal message – although universal – of harmony and beauty which is the essence of his artwork.

Le sue sculture si offrono allo spettatore come figure astratte, intangibili, per poi schiudersi in raffigurazioni ispirate agli elementi naturali, floreali o minerali, o trasfigurarsi in una sintesi ardita che sembra incarnare il perpetuo fluire del tempo sulle cose. La predilezione per la linea curva porta a capolavori fluidi e sinuosi che combinano eleganza e sensualità, come nell’opera bronzea Untitled (2017). Dipinta di un blu elettrico ed intenso, questa scultura ricorda il fluttuare placido delle piante marine, che con i loro rami flessuosi si allungano per poi ritrarsi, sviluppandosi in forme fulgide ed evanescenti. Anche le figure astratte dal colore rosso accesso di Untitled (2017) e Untitled (2018) sembrano ispirarsi agli elementi naturali; seguiamo lo snodarsi delle linee tra i volumi morbidi e i vuoti angusti, percepiamo la tensione e l’energia incastonata nelle membra torte di Untitled (2018), mentre il nostro sguardo si avvolge sulle forme tese di Untitled (2014), che fluiscono accarezzando l’aria come fiammelle. Gialla e brillante, Untitled (2017) suggerisce un dinamismo raccolto, come un bocciolo sul punto di schiudersi.

Atchugarry’s sculptures present themselves to the viewer as abstract figures – intangible – which spread into shapes inspired by natural, floral or mineral elements; or, they are transformed into a daring synthesis which appears to incarnate the perpetual flow of time over things. His predilection for curved lines creates fluid and sinuous masterpieces, combining elegance and sensuality as in the bronze work, Untitled (2015). The intense electric blue sculpture recalls the placid fluttering of marine plants, whose willowy branches reach out, then retract into radiant and evanescent forms. Even the bright red abstract figures Untitled (2017), Untitled (2018) and Untitled (2014) seem to have drawn inspiration from natural elements; in the unwinding of the lines between soft volumes and narrow spaces, we can perceive the tension and energy trapped within the entangled limbs of Untitled (2018), meanwhile our glance captures the taunt forms of Untitled (2014) which lightly caress the air like flickering flames. Untitled (2017) – a brilliant yellow sculpture – hints of a closed dynamism, like a flower bud ready to bloom.

Accanto ai bronzi dalle vernici lucenti, sono presenti le sculture in marmo, esempi luminosi di una bellezza imponente.

Pezzi unici, che l’artista fa nascere seguendo le venature dei marmi con una sensibilità che ne preserva la naturalezza, e che al contempo denota la sua consapevolezza e responsabilità nei confronti del passato. Atchugarry si pone come punto di congiunzione e continuità tra l’espressione contemporanea e la tradizione della statuaria classica.

Ispirandosi alla lezione Michelangiolesca, l’artista scava la materia, indagandola ed interrogandola, per liberare la forma celata nella pietra ed eternarne l’energia vitale in uno slancio di armonia.

Marble sculptures placed alongside the shiny varnished bronzes are luminous examples of majestic beauty. Unique pieces that the artist gives birth to by following the marble veins with a delicacy that preserves the naturalness while at the same time it denotes how much Atchugarry is fully aware of his responsibility in regards to the past, placing himself as a conjunction point and continuity between contemporary expression and traditional expression of classic sculpture. Revisiting centuries of sculpture and following lessons learned from Michelangelo, the artist collects the material, studies and questions it, to free the hidden forms within the stone and eternally preserve the vital energy in a thrust of harmony.

La levigatezza setosa del marmo bianco di Carrara conferisce ad Untitled (2006) e Untitled (2018) una consistenza leggera, diafana e fragile; mentre le composizioni intriganti e fantasiose dai profili frastagliati di Untitled (2005) e Untitled (2006) creano giochi di luce che esaltano l’eleganza dei toni perlati del marmo grigio Bardiglio.

The silky smoothness of white marble from Carrara gives to Untitled (2006) and Untitled (2018)a light, diaphanous and fragile consistency; whereas the mysterious and creative compositions with jagged edges of Untitled (2005) and Untitled (2006), create a play of light which exalts the elegance of the pearlized tones of the grey marble from Bardiglio.

The Movement of Light investiga quel dialogo virtuoso tra materia, spazio e luce che si genera nell’opera di Atchugarry. Bagliori, ombre e giochi di riflessi impreziosiscono il dinamismo plastico e l’intensa carica energetica delle sue creazioni, accentuandone gli effetti espressivi. Seguendo il dispiegarsi eterogeneo delle linee, la luce si snoda leggera, scivolando sui volumi morbidi ed insinuandosi nei vuoti nascosti per poi subito riemergere e continuare sulle superfici lucide dei bronzi smaltati e dei marmi levigati questo eterno inseguimento della forma.

The Movement of Light investigates that virtuous dialogue between the material, space and the light that Atchugarry’s work generates. Luminosity, shadows and a playfulness of reflections embellish the sculptural dynamism and the intense energy radiated from his creations to accentuate the expressive effects. Following the heterogenous unfolding of its lines, the light slightly unwinds, sliding over the soft volumes and creeps into the empty spaces where it later re-emerges.

It continues along the bright surfaces of the varnished bronzes and polished marbles in an eternal pursuit of the shapes.

La scultura di Atchugarry indaga sapientemente la complementarità e la polarità di naturale ed artificiale, figurazione ed astrazione, vuoto e pieno, spazio e forma, realtà e riflesso, attraverso una poetica che celebra l’espressione artistica come slancio irrinunciabile verso l’assoluto.

Atchugarry’s sculpture expertly investigates the complementarity and the polarity of the natural and artificial, the empty and full, space and form, reality and reflection, figuration and abstraction, through the poetic celebration of artistic expression as an essential impetus towards the absolute.

Il mio primo incontro con Pablo Atchugarry risale agli inizi degli anni Duemila. Parlo di un incontro “consapevole”, fortuito. Era sera, stavo guidando a Lecco in direzione di Palazzo Belgioioso: traffico quasi zero, l’ideale situazione per guardarsi intorno e “cercare la città quando l’ombra placa le sue brutture, i suoi sconci” (Cesare Brandi). A un tratto, in uno slargo circolare della strada, mi si para davanti una specie di fiamma candida, tremula nel rosario di fari che illuminano dal basso verso l’alto. È alta, molto alta, sembra perdersi nel cielo. Un’epifania che stupisce ed emoziona. Fermo l’auto, scendo, voglio sapere che cos’è, di chi è, l’ultima volta che sono passato da queste parti non c’era. Una targa nella base di bardiglio garfagnino, soddisfa subito la mia curiosità: la scultura, in marmo di Carrara, s’intitola Monumento alla Civiltà e Cultura del Lavoro lecchese, l’autore si chiama Pablo Atchugarry, appunto. Nome che non mi era nuovo, avendone più volte viste le opere pubblicate su libri e riviste.

My first encounter with Pablo Atchugarry was at the beginning of the year 2000. It was a “conscientious” encounter. And fortuitous. It was evening, I was driving to Lecco towards Palazzo Belgioioso: almost no traffic, an ideal situation to observe the landscape and “see the city when the shadow placates its ugliness, its filth” (Cesare Brandi). Suddenly in a circular opening in the road, in front of me appeared a sort of candid flame, flickering in a sequence of lights which illuminated from the bottom to the top. It’s tall, very tall; it seems to be lost in the sky. An epiphanic moment that astonished me, a moving experience.

I stopped the car, got out to see what it was, whose it was; it was not there the last time I passed by. A plaque at the base of the Bardiglio marble soon answered my question: a sculpture in marble from Carrara, entitled Monumento alla Civiltà e Cultura del Lavoro lecchese (Monument to the Civilization and Work Culture of Lecco), and in fact, the artist’s name was Pablo Atchugarry. A name that was not new to me, having many times seen his works published in books and magazines.

Ma il contatto diretto è un’altra storia, la materia, la tridimensionalità, il tocco della mano sono un tramite insostituibile per sentire l’anima, il cuore, l’idea dello scultore. Da allora Atchugarry, uruguagio di Montevideo che vive per metà dell’anno proprio a Lecco (l’altra metà la trascorre a Manantiales, Uruguay), è entrato nel mio radar personale, ne seguo l’opera con attenzione, l’ho ammirata nella stupenda retrospettiva inscenata, su suo allestimento, nei Mercati di Traiano a Roma, ove le sculture nivee e astratte dialogavano con le suggestioni storiche ed estetiche dell’antichità classica.

Having direct contact is another story, feeling the material, the three-dimensionality; the touch of the hand is incomparable to feel the soul, the heart and idea of the sculptor.

From that moment, Atchugarry - Uruguayan from Montevideo who lives half the year precisely in Lecco (the other half in Manantiales, Uruguay) - entered into my personal radar, I follow his works with attention, I admired them in the impressive retrospective staged by the artist in the Traiano Markets in Rome, where the snow-white and abstract sculptures dialogued with the evocative history and aesthetics of antique classicism.

Del suo creatore ho appreso, almeno per sommi capi, la vita, il padre artista innamorato dell’arte come la mamma di origine italiana, le prime esperienze da pittore – già in mostra appena undicenne –, poi la passione divorante per la scultura interpretata attraverso i più diversi materiali, la scoperta, quasi una fulminazione, del marmo, nella cava del Polvaccio, quella di Michelangelo, che lui stesso ha spiegato così in un’intervista: “Era il 1979 ed ebbi modo per la prima volta di lavorarlo, fu subito amore”, continuando poi: “Il marmo è sicuro il materiale che prediligo, nelle sue quattro varianti che amo definire ‘pennellate della natura’: lo statuario di Carrara, che è bianco, il marmo rosa, quello grigio e quello nero del Belgio. Ho lavorato anche col bronzo, con l’acciaio e col legno. Di fatto tra materiale e artista si instaura una sorta di dialogo: non è solo l’artista che sceglie il materiale ma viceversa, è anche il materiale che sceglie l’artista, lo indirizza, con la sua bellezza e le sue imperfezioni. Come insegnava Michelangelo, l’idea che mi guida nello scolpire è che l’opera vada solo fatta uscire dal blocco di materiale che ho davanti”.

From its creator, I learned briefly about his life: his father an artist himself and passionate about art like the mother of Italian origin; his first experiences as a painter (already showing his works at age 11) - then the all-consuming passion for sculpture using the most diverse materials, the discovery of marble (a fulmination) in the Polvaccio quarries used by Michelangelo and which he explained in an interview, “It was 1979 and for the first time I had the chance to work with marble. I was immediately in love”. He continued, “Marble is by far the material that I prefer, in its four variants which I love to define ‘nature’s brushstrokes’: white marble from Carrara, pink marble, grey marble and black Belgium marble. I have also worked with bronze, steel and wood. In fact, between the artist and the material a sort of dialogue is established: it is not only the artist that chooses the material, but vice-versa, it is also the material that chooses the artist and with its beauty and imperfections, guides him. As I learned from Michelangelo, the idea that guides me in sculpting is that a piece of artwork must emerge from the block of material in front of me”.

suo linguaggio sono la reinterpretazione di codici plastici consolidati dal tempo e da maestri come lo stesso Michelangelo, e poi Brancusi, l’espressività della luce modulata e modellata da forme e volumi, l’eternità della materia, la verticalità, ovverosia la spinta verso l’alto che a tratti s’interrompe là dove i vuoti segnalano l’addensarsi della materia; e ancora la teoria dei panneggi che, con il loro andamento curvilineo, ammorbidiscono ma non negano lo slancio ascensionale, solo lo volgono anche in abbraccio, lo rendono più umano interponendosi come legante tra terra e cielo, ne esprimono l’indispensabile cifra femminile, “la rotondità della Terra, la donna come fonte di vita e nascita, nella sua capacità di procreare”. E tutto ciò l’artista ricompone nell’astrattezza del segno che, nell’immobilità danzante della resa plastica, sembra alludere, nel profondo, al senso e al soffio vitale della Natura.

expressions are the re-interpretation of plastic codes consolidated through time and by great masters - like Michelangelo himself and later Brancusi -the expressivity of light modulated and moderated by forms and volumes, the eternity of the material, the verticality or the upward thrust which often is interrupted where an empty space delineates the density of the material. There’s the theory of the drapery whose curviness, softens the upward ascent without compromising it, even turning it into an embrace and its rendering is more humanistic. Interposing itself as a bond between earth and the heavens, it expresses an indispensable note of femininity, “the roundness of the Earth, the woman as a source of life and birth, in her ability to procreate”. All which the artist recomposes in the abstractionism - in the dancing stillness of the sculpture - seems to allude, in a profound sense, to the vital whispering of nature.

E ancora è Atchugarry a introdurci in questo suo mondo estetico. Come ha raccontato qualche tempo fa in una conversazione: “La mia attività di scultore, come per tutti del resto, è iniziata con dei riferimenti figurativi. Andando avanti si sono semplificati: dando veste astratta a quei riferimenti, stilizzandoli in segni significanti ho trovato il modo di far emergere al meglio l’essenza della scultura.

Le mie opere si sviluppano verso l’alto perché si interrogano, come me, sul futuro, sullo spazio, sul tempo in cui si trovano ad esistere”. E in quella visione orientata verso l’alto non manca di giocare un ruolo, così a me pare, anche l’aver scelto di abitare e lavorare a Lecco, sotto gli appicchi dei primi monti lombardi. “Ovunque guardi a Lecco trovi la natura: l’uomo spesso se ne dimentica così come dimentica di far parte di un ciclo più grande di lui. La vita in una grande città può essere stimolante ma non concede il privilegio di tornare alla natura.

Io abito sotto la parete strapiombante del Medale, ogni mattino mi alzo e guardo in sù, verso quelle meravigliose montagne – che cosa sono se non le più belle sculture?

– e non c’è volta che io non mi senta ispirato da questa visione, così come da quella del lago. Per questo ho deciso di rimanere a Lecco”.

And once again, it is Atchugarry who introduces us to his aesthetic world. As he mentioned a while ago during a conversation, “My activity as a sculptor, like everything else, began with figurative references. Over time they became more simplified: embodying those references into something abstract, stylizing significant points I discovered how to make the essence of the sculpture emerge in the best possible way. My works extend upwards because its asks questions - as I do - on the future, on space and on a time frame during which they will exist”. It is that very vision orientated upwards which in my opinion, also plays a role in his choosing to live and work in Lecco, under a foothold of the Lombard mountains.

“Everywhere you look in Lecco you find nature: Man often forgets this just like he forgets that he is part of a cycle larger than he himself. Life in a large city can be stimulating but it doesn’t allow us the privilege of returning to nature. I live under the cliff of the Medale and every morning I wake up and look out towards those incredible mountains - are they not the most beautiful sculptures? and not once have I not felt inspired by that view as well as the view over the lake. For this reason, I decided to remain in Lecco”.

Quella di Atchugarry, omone dal viso sincero e dallo sguardo generoso, è dunque arte sottile, polisemica ricchissima di significato, assai complessa nella sua apparente linearità: stimola l’immaginazione e la meraviglia di chi la guarda e l’ammira – il titolo Untitled a cui il Maestro spesso ricorre è per non forzarne l’interpretazione –, è enigmatica e intuitiva, trasmette sensazioni di Bello e di Bellezza coinvolgenti e al tempo stesso sconvolgenti perché mettono in crisi il pensiero abitudinario: bene hanno fatto Stefano Contini e la sua galleria veneziana a proporla in mostra in un florilegio di una ventina di pezzi strepitosi in bronzo, acciaio e marmo, veri capolavori di uno scultore unico, oggi è da annoverare tra i massimi artisti dell’America Latina.

The art of Atchugarry - a man of portly presence with a sincere face and a generous expression - is subtle, polysemic, rich in significance, yet extremely complex in its apparent linearity: it stimulates the imagination and astounds its admirers; the title Untitled, is often used by the artist so as not to force any kind of interpretation. It’s enigmatic and intuitive, it transmits sensations of Beauty which is powerful yet at the same time disconcerting because it questions our normal way of thinking. Stefano Contini will proudly exhibit them in his gallery in Venice, in a display of approximately twenty magnificent pieces in bronze, steel and marble, true masterpieces of unique sculpture. Today Atchugarry is to be considered as one of the finest Latin American artists.

BIOGRAFIA | BIOGRAPHY Pablo Atchugarry è nato a Montevideo, Uruguay, il 23 agosto 1954. Fin da piccolo, Pablo è fortemente incoraggiato a cimentarsi nel disegno dalla madre María Cristina Bonomi e dal padre Pedro, grande appassionato d’arte e allievo del Maestro Joaquin Torres Garcia. Percependo l’attitudine del figlio, i genitori lo stimolano ad intraprendere questo percorso fin dall’infanzia. Nel 1965, all’età di 11 anni, prende parte ad una mostra collettiva a Montevideo, esponendo per la prima volta due opere pittoriche. Sperimenta poi diversi materiali come l’argilla, il cemento, il ferro e il legno e nel 1971 realizza la prima scultura in cemento intitolata Caballo. Seguiranno altri lavori in ferro e cemento quali Escritura Simbólica (1974), Estructura Cósmica (1974), Metamorfosis Prehistórica (1974), Maternidad (1974) e Metamorfosis Femenina (1974).

Nel 1972 realizza la prima personale di disegni e dipinti presso il Centro de Exposiciones SUBTE di Montevideo; seguiranno diverse mostre sia nel 1974 (Galería Lirolay di Buenos Aires e XV Salón Internacional Paris–Sud) sia nel 1976 (Porto Alegre, San Pablo, Brasilia e Rio de Janeiro - durante la quale conosce l’artista Iberê Camargo).

Pablo Atchugarry was born in Montevideo, Uruguay on August 23, 1954. At an early age, his parents, María Cristina Bonomi and Pedro Atchugarry, art enthusiasts, discovered their son’s aptitude for drawing and they encouraged him to follow this path. He initially expressed himself through drawings and painting, and in 1965 at the age of 11, two of his works were displayed in a collective exhibition in Montevideo. Pablo discovered other materials such as clay, concrete, iron and wood and in 1971 he created his first sculpture in concrete, entitled Caballo (Horse). Other sculptures in concrete and iron would follow dated 1974: Escritura simbólica (Symbolic Writing), Estructuracósmica (Cosmic Structure), Metamorfosis prehistórica (Prehistoric Metamorphosis), Maternidad (Maternity) or Metamorfosis femenina (Feminine Metamorphosis).

In 1972, he realized his first solo exhibition of drawings and paintings in the SUBTE Exhibition Center in Montevideo, followed by various exhibitions held in 1974 (Lirolay Gallery in Buenos Aires and the Paris-Sud International Salon) and in 1976 (Porto Alegre, San Pablo, Brasilia and Río de Janeiro where he met the artist Iberê Camargo).

Nel 1977 inizia i suoi soggiorni europei visitando diversi Paesi quali Belgio, Danimarca, Francia, Germania, Olanda, Spagna, Svizzera e Italia. Nel 1978 tiene la prima mostra personale di pittura in Italia, presso la Galleria Visconti di Lecco. Lo stesso anno espone anche presso la Galleria Nuova Sfera di Milano e la Galleria La Colonna di Como, dove presenta per la prima volta al pubblico i propri disegni a china e acquarello. In questa occasione, Mario Radice scrive un articolo per il quotidiano comasco La Provincia intitolato “Alla Colonna, ottime chine del pittore scultore uruguaiano Atchugarry”.

Nel 1979 Atchugarry ottiene la prima mostra personale a Parigi, presso la Maison de l’Amérique Latine e, successivamente, a Coira e Stoccolma. Durante il suo soggiorno parigino, realizza il disegno preparatorio de La Lumière, la prima scultura che realizza in marmo e per la cui creazione si sposta a Carrara e a Brescia.

In 1977 Atchugarry began his European travels with visits to different countries – Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Holland, Spain, Switzerland and Italy. In 1978 he held his first solo exhibition of paintings in Italy (Visconti Gallery in Lecco); in that same year he held another solo exhibition of paintings at the Nuova Sfera Gallery in Milan and at La Colonna Gallery in Como where for the first time he showed his drawings in ink and watercolor. For the occasion, Mario Radice wrote an article in the daily newspaper, La Provincia, entitled “Alla Colonna, ottime chine del pittore scultore uruguaiano Atchugarry” (At the Colonna, Excellent Inks by the Uruguayan Painter/Sculptor Atchugarry).

In 1979, he celebrated his first solo exhibition in Paris, at the Maison de l’Amérique Latine and later he exhibited in Chur and Stockholm. During his stay in Paris, he realized a preparatory drawing for La Lumière (The Light), his first sculpture created in marble and for which he relocated to Carrara and Brescia.

Nel 1987 le sue opere sono esposte nella Cripta del Bramantino e nel complesso della Basilica di San Nazaro in Brolo a Milano, con la presentazione critica di Raffaelle De Grada.

A partire dal 1989, comincia a manifestarsi la tendenza di Atchugarry a lavorare con opere di dimensione monumentale, che attualmente fanno parte di collezioni pubbliche e private in tutto il mondo.

Nel 1996 scolpisce l’opera Semilla de la esperanza (Seme della Speranza), destinata al parco di scultura del Palacio del Gobierno di Montevideo; mentre nel 1997 espone a Caracas, dove conosce Jesús Soto ed altri artisti.

Nel 1998 la Fondazione Veranneman, in Belgio, organizza una mostra personale delle sue opere scultoree, accompagnata da un saggio critico del professor Willem Elias.

Il 25 settembre 1999 viene inaugurato il Museo Pablo Atchugarry a Lecco, dove sono esposte in maniera permanente diverse opere che rappresentano il percorso artistico di Atchugarry, dai primi dipinti alle sculture più recenti, così come l’archivio della sua produzione.

In 1987 his works were exhibited in the Bramantino Crypt in the Basilica of San Nazaro (Milan) with a critical presentation by Raffaelle De Grada. In 1989, Atchugarry began to express a tendency towards working with pieces of monumental dimensions, works that still today can be found in public and private collections worldwide.

In 1996 he sculpted the work Semilla de la esperanza (Seed of Hope), realized for the Government Palace Sculpture Park in Montevideo.

In 1997, he exhibited in Caracas, where he would meet Jesús Soto along with other artists. In 1998 the Veranneman Foundation in Belgium organized a solo exhibition of his sculptures with a critical essay by Professor Willem Elias.

In September of 1999, in Lecco, he inaugurated the Pablo Atchugarry Museum, where diverse artworks on permanent display represent his artistic pathway, from the earliest paintings to the sculptures of today as well as conserving the archives of his works.

Nel 2001 la città di Milano organizza, nella sede di Palazzo Isimbardi, la retrospettiva dal titolo Le infinite evoluzioni del marmo e nello stesso anno ottiene la prima mostra personale a Londra, presso la Albemarle Gallery dove crea l’imponente scultura in marmo di sei metri Obelisco del Terzo Millennio, per la città di Manzano (Udine). Vince anche il concorso nazionale per la realizzazione del Monumento alla Civiltà e Cultura del Lavoro Lecchese, che viene inaugurata a Lecco nel maggio del 2002. Anche in questo caso, l’opera presentata da Atchugarry è una scultura in marmo di Carrara di sei metri d’altezza, realizzata a partire da un unico blocco di 33 tonnellate.

In riconoscimento alla sua carriera artistica, nel luglio del 2002 viene insignito del premio “Michelangelo”, a Carrara. In questo periodo Atchugarry lavora a diversi progetti, tra i quali la scultura Ideales, un omaggio per celebrare il 50° anniversario dell’incoronazione del Principe Ranieri di Monaco, attualmente collocata nella Avenue Princesse Grace di Montecarlo.

In 2001 the City of Milan organized a retrospective exhibition at the Isimbardi Palace, entitled Le infinite evoluzioni del marmo (The Infinite Evolutions of Marble). In that same year he held his first solo exhibition in London at the Albemarle Gallery and he sculpted the Obelisco del terzo millennio (Obelisk of the Third Millenium), a monumental work – six meters high in Carrara marble – for the city of Manzano in Italy. He also won the national competition with his realization of the sculpture, Monumento alla Civiltà e Cultura del Lavoro Lecchese (A Monument to the Civilization and Work Culture of Lecco), which was also a six meters high work made from a unique 33 ton block of marble from Carrara and was inaugurated in Lecco in May of 2002.

In 2002, he received the Michelangelo Award in Carrara for special recognition of his artistic career. During this period, he continued to work on different projects amongst which the sculpture Ideales (Ideals), realized as a tribute for the 50th Anniversary of the Reign of Prince Ranieri of Monaco, now located in Avenue Princess Grace of Montecarlo.

Nel 2003 Atchugarry partecipa alla 50ª Biennale di Venezia con l’opera Sognando la Pace, un’installazione composta da otto sculture di grandi dimensioni in marmo di Carrara e marmo grigio Bardiglio della Garfagnana. Questo stesso anno espone per la seconda volta presso la Fondazione Veranneman in Belgio e realizza per la Fondazione Fran Daurel a Barcellona l’opera intitolata Ascensión.

Nel 2004, a distanza di 25 anni dalla sua ultima mostra in Uruguay, la Galleria Tejería Loppacher organizza la sua prima personale di scultura a Punta del Este, seguita da un’altra importante rassegna personale delle sue opere tenutasi l’anno successivo presso il Museo Nazionale di Belle Arti di Buenos Aires.

Il Groeninge Museum di Bruges dedica nel 2006 una grande retrospettiva ad Atchugarry, con opere provenienti da collezioni private di tutto il mondo. Quattro anni più tardi, il museo acquisisce una scultura per la propria collezione, che viene poi esposta in maniera permanente nel parco. Lo stesso anno, la collezione João Berardo in Portogallo acquisisce l’opera Camino Vital (1999), una scultura di 483 centimetri di altezza destinata al Centro Culturale di Belém, a Lisbona.

Nel 2007 si costituisce la Fondazione Pablo Atchuggarry a Manantiales (Uruguay), con l’obbiettivo di creare un luogo di incontro per artisti di tutte le discipline, uno spazio di unione ideale tra natura ed arte. Questo stesso anno Atchugarry porta a compimento la sua prima scultura di otto metri intitolata Nel cammino della Luce, scolpita da un unico blocco di marmo di Carrara di 48 tonnellate e destinata alla Collezione Fontanta, in Italia.

In 2003 he participated in the 50th Venice Biennale with the composition Soñando la paz (Dreaming of Peace) a sculptural work of 8 monumental pieces realized in Carrara marble and Bardiglio marble from Garfagnana. He exhibited at the Veranneman Foundation in Belgium for the second time. That same year he would create a work entitled Ascensión for the Fran Daurel Foundation in Barcelona.

In 2004, after 25 years of not having exhibited in Uruguay, the Tejería Loppacher Gallery organized its first solo show of sculpture in Punta del Este (a continuation of the same would be held in 2005) and the National Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires realized an important solo exhibition of his works.

In 2006, the Groeninge Museum of Bruges dedicated a retrospective exhibition, with works from private international collections. Four years later, the same museum acquired a sculpture for its own collection which is on permanent display in the gardens. That same year the João Berardo Collection from Portugal acquired the work Camino Vital (Vital Pathway) - executed in 1999 - precisely for the Cultural Center of Belém in Lisbon. In Uruguay, the Sur Gallery organized an exhibition of his most recent works.

During the year 2007, the Pablo Atchugarry Foundation was established in Manantiales (Uruguay), with the intention of creating a meeting place for artists from all fields, an ideal space to unite nature and art. That same year the artist finalized his first eight meters high work, entitled Nel cammino della Luce (In the Way of Light), sculpted from one 48-ton block of Carrara marble, designated for the Fontana Collection in Italy.

Nel 2008 il Museo Nazionale di Arti Visive di Montevideo gli dedica una mostra personale che raccoglie gli ultimi quindici anni della sua produzione artistica.

Nel 2009 Atchugarry conclude un’altra opera monumentale, la scultura Luz y energía de Punta del Este (Luce ed energia di Punta del Este) realizzata in marmo di Carrara e con un’altezza di cinque metri, che viene inaugurata a Punta del Este in occasione del centenario della città.

In 2008, the National Museum of Visual Arts in Montevideo, dedicated a one-man exhibition to the artist which covered the last fifteen years of his artistic career.

In 2009, the work entitled Luz y energía de Punta del Este (Light and Energy of Punta del Este), was inaugurated in Punta del Este, Uruguay, five meters in height and realized in Carrara marble it was a tribute to the centennial celebration of the city.

Dopo sette anni di intenso lavoro, nel 2011 termina l’opera Abbraccio Cosmico, scolpita da un blocco di 56 tonnellate di peso e di 8,5 metri di altezza. Nel novembre dello stesso anno si tiene la prima mostra personale a New York, a cura di Hollis Taggart Galleries e con testo critico di Jonathan Goodman.La Galleria Sur, in Uruguay, presenta i suoi lavori ad Art Basel Miami e, successivamente, a Tefaf Art Fair di Maastricht, nei Paesi Bassi.

Nel marzo del 2012, la Times Square Alliance seleziona l’opera Dreaming New York per essere esposta a Times Square durante la diciottesima edizione de The Armony Show di New York. Nel mese di luglio dello stesso anno, nell’ambito del programma City of Sculpture organizzato dal Westminster City Council, due sculture di acciaio inossidabile vengono esposte a St. James Square Gardens di Londra. Queste due opere, intitolate Espíritu Olímpico I e EspírituOlímpico II, sono state create specificamente per l’occasione e misurano rispettivamente 5,9 e 5,85 metri d’altezza.

Alla fine del 2013, la casa editoriale Mondadori Electa di Milano pubblica due volumi del Catalogo Generale della scultura di Pablo Atchugarry, a cura del professor Carlo Pirovano. Il terzo volume uscirà nel 2019.

In 2011, after seven years of work, the artist finalized the sculpture Abrazo cósmico (Cosmic Embrace), realized from one 56 ton block of marble and 8.5 meters high. In November 2011 he realized his first solo show in New York at the Hollis Taggart Galleries, with a critical essay presented by Jonathan Goodman. The Sur Gallery in Uruguay presented his works at Art Basel Miami and later at TEFAF in Maastricht (Netherlands).

In March of 2012, the Times Square Alliance selected his work Dreaming New York to be displayed in Times Square during the New York Armory Show. In July, within the framework of the program City of Sculpture (London), the Westminster City Council displayed two sculptures in stainless steel at the St. James Square Gardens. These works entitled Espíritu Olímpico I and Espíritu Olímpico II (Olympic Spirit I and II), specifically created for the occasion, are 5.9 and 5.85 metres respectively in height.

Towards the end of 2013, the Mondadori Electa publishing house in Milan, printed two volumes of a comprehensive catalogue of the artist’s sculptures, with the curatorship of Professor Carlo Pirovano. The third volume is expected to be finalized by the year 2019.

Nel 2015-2016 il Museo dei Fori Imperiali – Mercati di Traiano di Roma ha ospitato la mostra Pablo Atchugarry.

Città Eterna, eterni marmi, un’importante retrospettiva che ha presentato il lavoro dell’artista attraverso una rassegna di 40 opere. Il Museu Brasileiro da Escultura a Sao Paulo organizza, durante l’anno 2017, la più grande retrospettiva delle sue opere intitolata Un viaggio attraverso la Materia.

Nel 2018 si inaugura l’Atchugarry Art Center a Miami.

Atchugarry riceve nel 2019 l’onorificenza, da parte del Presidente della Repubblica Italiana, di Ufficiale della Stella d’Italia. A maggio dello stesso anno, la Galleria d’Arte Contini inaugura The Movement of Light, mostra personale dedicata all’artista presso la sede di Venezia in Calle Larga XXII Marzo, San Marco 2288. Segue dal mese di giugno la mostra The Evolution of a Dream, organizzata dal Comune di Pietrasanta, in collaborazione con la Galleria d’Arte Contini di Venezia, con la Fondazione Versiliana e START, che presenta in Piazza Duomo e nella Chiesa e Chiostro di Sant’Agostino una selezione di sculture monumentali di Atchugarry in marmo e bronzo.

In 2015-2016 the Museum of the Imperial Fora – the Traiano Markets of Rome, hosted the exhibition Pablo Atchugarry.

Città Eterna, eterni marmi (Pablo Atchugarry, Eternal City, Eternal Marble), an important retrospective which presented the production of the artist through a review of 40 works of art. The Museu Brasileiro da Escultura in Sao Pualo organizes, during the year 2017, the largest retrospective of his works entitled A journey through the Matter.

In 2018 the Atchugarry Art Center in Miami (USA) was inaugurated. In 2019 he was honored by the President of the Italian Republic with the title Officer of the Order of the Star of Italy. In May of that same year, the Contini Art Gallery located on Calle Larga XXII Marzo, San Marco 2288, inaugurates the exhibition The Movement of Light, a solo exhibition dedicated to the artist.

In the following month of June, the Municipality of Pietrasanta in collaboration with the Contini Art Gallery in Venice, the Versiliana Foundation and START, organizes “The Evolution of a Dream” which presents a selection of Atchugarry’s monumental sculptures in marble and bronze placed along Piazza Duomo and in the St. Augustine Church and Cloister.

His works are present in various museums world-wide, such as the Perez Art Museum in Miami, Phillip & Patricia Frost Art Museum in Miami, the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, Virginia,the Groeninge Museum in Bruges, Lercaro Museum in Bologna, and the Park Museum in Portofino.

L’artista oggi vive e lavora tra Lecco e Manantiales (Uruguay), dove si occupa dello sviluppo della Fondazione Pablo Atchugarry e del parco di scultura internazionale, così come delle aree espositive finalizzate all’insegnamento e alla diffusione dell’arte, che ogni anno ricevono la visita di migliaia di studenti.

Pablo Atchugarry rappresenta una delle realtà più interessanti e dinamiche dell’arte e della scultura mondiale, tenendo conto dell’internazionalità delle sue attività, che generano una grande quantità di scambi con altri artisti di tutto il mondo, facilitando la costruzione di un ponte di comunicazione tra l’arte europea e quella americana.

Atchugarry lives and works in Lecco (Italy) and in Manantiales (Uruguay), where he is committed to the development of the Pablo Atchugarry Foundation and its international sculpture park as well as areas of formation, teaching and diffusion of art; thousands of students visit each year. Today it represents the most dynamic and interesting fruition of art and international sculpture bearing in mind the internationality of its activities, which generate a large quantity of inter-exchanges with other artists and a readiness to build a bridge of communication between European and American art.
