Carol

Ireland/UK/Canada 2015 105 mins Dir: John Crowley

UK/USA 2015 118 mins Dir: Todd Haynes

Based on the well-loved novel by Colm Tóibin, and expertly adapted for the screen by Nick Hornby, the film follows Ellis Lacey (a captivating Saoirse Ronan) as she leaves 1950’s Ireland for brighter work prospects in New York. Initially reticent to the possibilities of her new home’s charms; new friendships and an unexpected romance buoy her as she settles into her new surroundings. But when home ties pull her painfully back to Ireland, she is forced to choose between two men, two countries and two futures. John Crawley’s warm and affecting drama set off a bidding war after playing to rapt audiences at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Todd Haynes first feature film since 2007’s I’m Not There (although he did mastermind the excellent Mildred Pierce TV mini-series) is a gripping adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Price Of Salt. Set in the 1950s it follows the story of Therese (Rooney Mara), a young woman in her twenties who falls for Carol (Cate Blanchett) an older, married woman.

Carol received a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival and was the Winner of Best Actress award for Rooney Mara’s performance as Therese.

Directed by Steven Spielberg and from a screenplay by Matt Charman and the Coen Brothers, this is a film with pedigree.

Burnt USA 2015 Dir: John Wells

Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook) plays Adam Jones, a chef who had it all but blew it. A two-star Michelin chef with all the bad habits that entails, the former enfant terrible of the Parisian food scene has lost it all. He moves back home to London, plots his comeback and his quest to get three stars for a top restaurant run by Sienna Miller’s Helene. With a top notch supporting cast including Omar Sy, Jamie Dornan, Emma Thompson, Matthew Rhys, Daniel Bruhl, Alicia Vikander and Uma Thurman.

Set in the 1950s, The Dressmaker tells the tale of Tilly (Kate Winslet), a glamorous young woman who returns home to rural Australia, after many years in Europe. But she is not there to relax, but to settle some scores. Tilly reconciles with her ailing mother and armed only with her sewing machine, exacts sweet revenge on those who did her wrong. Based on the best-selling novel by Rosalie Ham and directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse, her first film in 18 years.

He Named Me Malala USA 2015 87 mins Dir: Davis Guggenheim

An Inconvenient Truth director Davis Guggenheim explores the events leading up to the Taliban’s attack on a young Pakistani school girl, Malala Yousafzai, for speaking out on girls’ education in her region of Swat Valley and the aftermath including her speech to the United Nations. She miraculously survived the gunshot attack and is now a leading campaigner for girls’ education globally. An inside glimpse into an extraordinary young girl’s life.

Horse Money S (Calvalo Dinheiro) Portugal 2014 103 mins Dir: Pedro Costa

Number 3 in Sight and Sound’s Best Films Of 2014 list, Horse Money is the stunning new film from award winning Portuguese auteur Pedro Costa. Shot in 4:3 aspect ratio with a mostly static camera, Costa follows Ventura through a series of haunting tableaux over the course of one night, as he travels through Lisbon slums populated by the ghosts of both his and his country’s past. What results is a memorable and experimental contemplation of Portugal’s troubled past and uncertain future, from one of the true poets of contemporary European cinema. “Horse Money is film poetry of an altogether higher order… One of 2015’s essential film releases” Little White Lies
