2018 big year for sport in Queensland With less than two months to the start of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, Queenslanders are bracing for one of the biggest years ever in sport in this State.

The metrics associated with the Games will ensure they are the biggest multisport event to take place in Australia this decade, with the April 4-15 program set to dominate the sports landscape for 2018.

They will add to what is an already increasingly diverse calendar of sport events this year, with positives aplenty for the State and its economy in a way that little other than sport can deliver.

And if the result is similar for the Gold Coast as it was for Brisbane in 1982, it will validate the Bligh Government’s successful bid to bring the Games once again to South East Queensland, not forgetting some events will be held in other regions.

QSport welcomes the Gold Coast Games of 2018 and wishes all who participate an enjoyable experience.

From the

Welcome to the summer edition of Sportswatch, coming to readers after a long, hot summer, with cricket and tennis and other traditional dominant sports in summer fading somewhat into the impending light of autumn and the relentless march of all things football.

That’s not forgetting that football of the soccer variety has again played out locally via the ALeague and W-League and other team sports in baseball and basketball also have had their share of summer action.

Indeed, with an Ashes Test cricket series won and the BBL and WBBL pulling crowds and attention aplenty, it’s been an increasingly busier summer than in years past while the AFLW and various forms of rugby add to the diversity of sport on offer, not forgetting the Winter Olympics.

If we have missed anyone, apologies but readers will have gotten the drift of “there’s more to see than ever before”.

And congratulations are in order already for a couple of summer successes in the Townsville Fire and the Brisbane Bandits who have chalked up national championships in the WNBL and ABL respectively – obvious nominations for the Queensland Sport Team of the Year for 2018.

Closer to home, the QSport Office is well and truly up and running with the 25th Anniversary of the formal establishment of the State’s major representative, peak body for sport already under its belt.

Time flies when you’re having fun and it doesn’t seem like yesterday when the Sports Federation came into being on February 8, 1993 with the incorporation under relevant Queensland legislation following a year or so of lead up discussion on the notion of an industry based collective to advocate for sport and to assist its development.

Being around in sport at the time, it was a significant move that gave Queensland sport as a whole a voice at State level, the process of establishment by some 40 sporting bodies aided and encouraged by the support of the then State Government, support which has continued on since by successive State Governments of both major political persuasions.

Twenty five years on and still around, one can feel pleased that the work of the Federation trading these days as QSport, remains valued and supported by membership and a substantial bank of sponsors and other supporters for the efforts that largely come out of the QSport Office, supported by volunteer Board directors.

Twenty-five years ago, there were challenges and 25 years on, there remains plenty to occupy the Board and staff and the wider membership and our principal, single largest individual supporter in the State Government.

With the return of the Palaszczuk Labor Government at the November 2017 State election and the subsequent reappointment of Minister for Sport Mick de Brenni, QSport is gearing up for discussion on the Queensland Sport and Active Recreation Strategy committed to in the Government’s response to the QSport State Election Sport Policy Platform late last year.

Key points in that response conveyed to QSport by Minister de Brenni are covered elsewhere in this edition of Sportswatch.

So, on with the Gold Coast Games and then longer term planning that promises to be ahead in another big year for sport in this State.

Annual General Meetings on 27 March QSport and the Queensland Olympic Council will hold their upcoming AGMs back-to-back, as has been the case in recent years, again opting for lunch time gatherings at Sports House, Milton, Brisbane on Tuesday, 27 March.

QSport CEO Peter Cummiskey says the back to back meetings enable busy administrators of the States’ industry peak body member organisations and those Olympic sport members to optimise time and attendance at these annual gatherings.

The practice worked well in 2017 when the Australian Commonwealth Games Association’s Queensland Division joined the line-up.

The QSport AGM will commence at 12noon, to be followed by the QOC gathering from 12.45pm.

This year, with the upcoming Gold Coast Games in April, ACGA (Queensland) will wait until after the Games before holding its AGM.

Container Refund Scheme update The Queensland Government has extended the timeframe for the introduction of the state’s container refund scheme from 1 July to 1 November 2018.

The date was changed to respond to stakeholders who were keen to ensure the Queensland scheme leveraged the lessons learned from the rollout of the New South Wales scheme late last year.

CoEx will be governed by a Board of nine directors, made up of beverage industry and independent representation, and including an independent chair.

The Queensland Government and Container Exchange (CoEx)—which has been appointed by the Queensland Government as the scheme’s Product Responsibility Organisation (PRO)—want it to be the best scheme in Australia.

The delay will allow time for the PRO to get a

Stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s response to Sport Policy Platform encouraging As the government recognised, industry supported major representative body for sport collectively in Queensland, QSport has traditionally accepted the responsibility to canvass major political parties in the run up to State elections for views on what the sport sector might reasonably expect by way of commitment to address issues of interest / concern to sport.

In the weeks leading into the State election last November, QSport developed a list of topics and provided same to the major parties and in the latter part of the campaign, duly received written responses, which in turn were circulated to QSport members for information and action deemed appropriate.

State’s response to Sport Policy Platform encouraging (cont.)

The Get in the Game program will continue in 2018 under the Palaszczuk Government’s $125.5million Get in the Game 2018-20 record commitment.

•

A second-term Palaszczuk Government will maintain current levels of support for the State Development and Industry Peak Body funding programs across 2019-20, as doing so is consistent with commitment to supporting sporting and active recreation organisations and clubs to increase participation, support infrastructure development and continue to get Queenslanders out and active.

•

The Palaszczuk Government is committed to working with both industry peak bodies and state level sporting organisations to enhance grassroots participation in Queensland. As part of its delivery of the future Advance Queensland Sport and Active Recreation Strategy 201822, it will seek feedback from organisations on ways to optimise resources and will further consider various ways to greater support less-resourced SSO’s.

•

The Palaszczuk Government has welcomed its engagement with sporting stakeholders and key leaders in forums and workshops held in 2017, which has led to the commitment to deliver a future Advance Queensland Sport and Active Recreation Strategy. As part of that strategy, the Palaszczuk Government is committed to maintaining at least an annual opportunity to discuss and address the delivery of commitments with QSport.

Already QSport has picked up on some of the key themes arising from discussion on Sports Innovation convened by Minister de Brenni just prior to the State election, with QSport running workshops for its member State sporting organisations on communications and digital systems for sports in coming weeks.

QSport also will be engaging with the Government on the ramifications for sport of recommendations from the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sex Abuse and the Blue Card Review coming to light in 2017

oxing’s WBO world welterweight title holder Jeff Horn was The Courier-Mail Channel 7 Queensland Sport Star of the Year Award winner for 2017, announced at the 23rd Annual Queensland Sport Awards / Hall of Fame Presentation in Brisbane on 30 November last year.

kicker of the 1980’s and 1990’s in Hawthorn great Jason Dunstall was elevated to Legend status while Olympians in rower Duncan Free, swimmer Jessicah Schipper and triathlete Miles Stewart, along with world water ski champion Emma Sheers, were inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The black tie audience of 670 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre heard the announcement of Horn’s win at the end of a night which saw 11 Awards presented for Queensland’s top on and off field sporting performances in the period October, 2016 to September, 2017 plus three further Service to Sport Awards presented for outstanding service.

Former school teacher Horn was accompanied at the Awards Presentation by his wife Jo and his trainer and manager Glenn Rushton and edged out the likes of one of the greats of rugby league in Queensland and Australian captain Cameron Smith and world champions in sailor Mat Belcher, hurdler Sally Pearson and backstroke swimmer Emily Seebohm in a field of eleven of the State’s best performed athletes in 2017.

orn was the talk of the town, city, State and country and the world of international boxing when after only 17 professional fights, against the odds, he defeated boxing legend Manny Pacquiao who had a record of 67 professional bouts, 11times world champion over eight weight divisions.

In a very close, brutal contest, “The Hornet” showed great courage and willpower to comeback from the brink of defeat in the ninth round to win round ten and press on over the remaining two rounds to cause one of the great upsets in boxing history.

The fight, staged on 2 July last year in front of over 51,000 at Suncorp Stadium, was promoted as “ The Battle of Brisbane “ and took out the Queensland Sport Event of the Year Award sponsored by the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The XXXX sponsored Queensland Sport Team of the Year Award went to the Queensland Origin Maroons for their come from behind eclipse of New South Wales in one of the great series wins in the story that is Origin.

The Queensland Sport Awards are conducted each year by QSport as the industry peak body of sport in Queensland which also coordinates the Queensland Sport Hall of Fame.

QSport’s principal financial supporter is the Queensland Government while Channel 7 and The Courier-Mail also are major sponsors of the Awards and the Hall of Fame, with support from the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre as the venue for this promotion and recognition of Queensland sport and its top achievers since the Awards Presentations’ inception in 1995.

The McDonald’s sponsored Queensland Sport Athlete with a Disability award went to Proserpine cyclist David Nicholas for his trio of medals from the World Track Cycling Championships while the awards for juniors were won by Sunshine Coast backstroke swimmer Kaylee McKeown whose performances at the FINA World Championships in Hungary saw her named The Courier-Mail Channel Seven Queensland Junior Sport Star of the Year while the Queensland Government sponsored Junior Team of the Year Award went to the State Under 18 Boys Table Tennis team for their back to back national title win over Victoria.
