efore you start fre�ng about the sheer amount of academic content to memorise for school, know that your mind can be primed to tackle new informa�on and to absorb informa�on more easily than ever. Op�mise your learning at school by integra�ng the following ac�vi�es into your weekly rou�ne!

1. DO SPACED REPETITION

Our brain is programmed to remember through repe��on. We forget 70 percent of the new things we learn within 24 hours.

Spacing out your studying into intervals helps you take the informa�on from short- to long-term memory.

Start by reviewing it an hour later, then a day later, a week later, and a few weeks later. Spaced repe��on makes the process of learning anything very simple and straight forward

2. GET ENOUGH SLEEP

Sleep is where you translate short term memory into long term memory.

Sleep will help boost memory reten�on and sleep.

Compromising on sleep will, in fact, affect your crea�vity, problemsolving, and memory reten�on abili�es.

If you are reading this while lying in bed, here’s a �p: put aside all your electronics at least half an hour before bed.

Studies have shown that the blue light emi�ed by tablets and phones cause you to be more wakeful, causing you to take a longer �me to fall asleep and consequently ea�ng into your sleeping hours.

3. EAT A BRAIN-BOOSTING DIET You are what you eat.

Do you know there are food that will boost your brain power? Fuel your brain well for it to func�on op�mally.

Eat omega-3-fa�y acids, as they help control the brain’s learning and memory centres. Fish is rich in omega-3s, especially salmon, herring, and mackerel. Not a fan

of fish? Have walnuts, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, spinach, and soy beans.

Here’s a reason to hop on the matcha green tea bandwagon: drinking green tea boosts reten�on skills and helps your brain age slower, slowing the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

Fruits and vegetables are good for you, and here’s another reason why. They are packed with an�oxidants, substances that prevent brain cells from damage.

4. LISTEN TO MUSIC.

The right music improves your learning ability The best music for studying is not K-pop or the latest hits

by Bruno Mars. As old school as it sounds, research have shown that playing classical music helps you make predic�ons and pay be�er a�en�on. Listen to Baroque music, which is at 60 BPM and harmonizes with your res�ng heart rate.

Baroque music puts your brainwaves into an alpha state so you are relaxed and aware.

Music also improves your mood and outlook.

You probably will no longer need to know what elements make up the periodic table or how to dissect a frog long a�er you leave school, but a good memorisa�on ability is a skill that will benefit you for years to come. You will need a good working memory to go about comple�ng everyday tasks, from making a mental log of grocery items, to recalling what work your boss assigned you that week. Surely, your memory will serve you all the way to adulthood and more. So try these strategies and keep it sharp!
