The design concept of the project is “Caring for water”. The project aims to make Bolin Bolin Billabong and Birrarung River healthier, to rekindle the riparian areas as an event space, and to celebrate the traditional plant knowledge of Wurundjeri culture. The concept is inspired by the Wurundjeri philosophies and traditional usage of the place. Woody wetlands will be built around the river and the billabong. The wetlands will provide a buffer to the waterbodies, collect and filter grey water and stormwater, provide cultural water, serve as Wurundjeri plant knowledge outdoor workshops, and provide event spaces.
In Wurundjeri culture, water is the lifeblood of the Country, therefore it is critical to care for the waterbodies. Humans were created by Bunjil to look after the Country in Wurundjeri Dreaming stories. Birrarung River and Bolin Bolin Billabong are two of the most sacred components of the Country. Therefore, it is humans’ duty to make the river and the billabong healthy.
