As humans are intrinsic components of the Country and its care keepers, modern technologies need to be fused with ecosystems to enhance habitat value and climate resiliency. The landscape will be located in Fishermans Bend, in between the University of Melbourne’s Fishermans Bend campus and the waterfront of Birrarung River (Yarra River).
The Salt Woods will be rooted in mangrove ecosystems, which are indigenous to Birrarung River. The designed landscape is an inquiry into the methodologies of urban green spaces in low-lying estuary urban areas. The landscape will create a fresh-salt habitat gradient and provide surface water storage and drainage functions. The ecosystems will be hybridized with engineering technologies and capable of adapting to climate change. The Salt Woods can be integrated with future grey infrastructures. The future residents of the area will have the landscape as their connection to the Country in front of their doorsteps.
