WORK-LIFE BALANCE

W

ork takes up a large portion of our time, but we do our best to make it fit around family and social lives. Even returning to work after parental leave can present some challenges- particularly if you’re a business leader. For many new parents, there will be a spectrum of emotions to contend with; from excitement and nerves, to a tinge of guilt and dislocation. So, If you’re a new mom or dad preparing to return to work, you may want to think about putting practices into place to ensure a smooth transition.

HOW DO I REACH WORK-LIFE BALANCE? As a business leader, you’ll know exactly the sort of challenges you’ll face in your day-to-day work. The challenge of balancing them when you have a small human to look after can be daunting. Not to worry — a healthy work-life balance is achievable! It’s not always easy, but here are a few key principles to succeeding when you go back to work:

START SLOW Don’t throw yourself back in at the deep end. Before your departure from work, important tasks would’ve been handed over to a trusted colleague or shelved until it could be given the necessary time and attention.

KEEP-IN-TOUCH (KIT) (KIT) days are a great way to maintain contact with whoever has been left In charge in your absence and provide you with updates on how things are progressing and any issues or challenges. You can spread these out over the duration of your leave without feeling like it compromises on the quality of time spent with family, while also helping you keep your finger on the pulse of the business.

STAGGER A staggered return, where you return to work on a reduced basis, for example two days a week for a month before increasing your days, could also help the transition. Even if you own the business, you should implement the same procedure as you would for one of your employees.

DON’T COMPROMISE While remote working can be great for new parents, it can also be problematic in blurring the lines between work and family. The nature of the “always-on” culture in an increasingly connected world can impact family life. Don’t compromise the quality time. When working from home, make sure you’re working. When you’re spending time together as a family, don’t give in to the temptation to check work emails. Expect the same from your colleagues as you would yourself, and the boundaries for everyone will be crystal clear.

SHARE THE LOAD It’s easy to quickly fall into a routine where one parent is responsible for the daily drop off and pick up, meaning that person is under pressure each day to finish on time. Perhaps your partner, a family member or close friend can help each week or even a few times a month to help take the pressure off of you! Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Remember: juggling last minute work deadlines with set pick up times for the nanny can be tricky and sometimes you simply can’t do it all. If you still can’t make it work, then talk to your employer or HR to see if there are other arrangements or initiatives that you could take advantage of.

Sleep Mode: On! Stay warm in bed this winter and take advantage of the longer nights to refresh your sleep routine

D

ark mornings and evenings can have lots of amazing health benefits including helping you get a better night’s sleep. Melatonin, the hormone that stimulates sleep, is produced when daylight starts to fade, which occurs much earlier during winter. So take advantage of the fact that your body will fall asleep earlier and stay asleep for longer! However, with temperatures usually at their lowest during the early hours, the risk for many people is waking up shivering and being too cold to get a good night’s rest. Here are our top tips to help ensure you don’t shiver through the night and stay warm as toast!

PJs Wear night clothes such as pajamas or comfortable T-shirts to keep you cozy. Natural fibers such as wool, cotton or silk are better than synthetic materials.

Warm Bath Have a warm bath just before you go to bed. This will raise your body temperature which in turn will also help to get you sleepy.

Hot drink Have some warm decaffeinated tea before bed! Try chamomile or valerian root!

Water Bottle A hot water bottle is an ideal way to keep cozy in bed. Make sure it has a cover on it to avoid scalding and so it won’t feel cold in the middle of the night.

Move Your Body Try some exercise to get the circulation going and your body tired enough for some good rest.

Bedding It’s worth looking into the bedroom, the bed and the bedding- all of which play a part in keeping you insulated through the cold nights.

Duvet Choose a duvet with a high-rating or use several layers of bedding rather than one single layer. Layers will trap the air and are easily removed if you get too hot.

Mattress Avoid a saggy bed. It may be nice to cuddle up to share some body heat when you first get into bed, but it can be very uncomfortable and clammy during the night if you are thrown together by a bed that isn’t giving you the correct support. Look for a mattress that has a thicker side for use during the winter. A soft sleeping surface is a better insulator than a flat one. Use a fleece under blanket to retain the heat.

Electric blankets Electric blankets are ideal. Under blankets will warm the bed up before you retire for the night, while over blankets maintain a constant temperature throughout the night.

3 REASONS YOU SHOULD VISIT AN URGENT CARE THIS COLD AND FLU SEASON

B

race yourself. Cold and flu season is in full effect. It’s time for stuffy noses, the sniffles, and coughs loud enough to wake Sleeping Beauty to start plaguing the public. If you haven’t contracted either a cold or the flu yet, consider yourself lucky. But if you, like most people during this brutal time of year, came down with some sort of version of either, it’s likely that you sought some sort of medical attention. And when you decided to seek medical care, did you go to a hospital emergency room, your primary care doctor’s office, or an urgent care clinic? Chances are that you chose to forego the expense, chaos, and long wait of a visiting a hospital emergency room, and instead decided to try to get an appointment with your primary care physician -- except the next available appointment wasn’t for another week or so and you pretty much looked and felt like death. Believe it or not, this frustrating scenario is more common than you think. While primary and family care physicians provide a broad range of much needed medical services, trying to get an appointment in a pinch when you’re really not feeling well can be difficult. In these cases, it’s best to visit an urgent care. Still not convinced? Here are three reasons why you should visit an urgent care clinic for medical treatment during this cold and flu season.

THEY’RE FASTER Everyone can relate to the frustration of not being sick enough to visit a hospital emergency room, but also not being able to get an appointment with your primary care physician. That’s the beauty of urgent care clinics, you can literally walk in and be seen within a short period of time without having to schedule an appointment ahead of time. For example, 69% of urgent care clinics have wait times of 20 minutes or less. Add to that the fact that 85% of urgent care centers are open seven days week, with 95% open after 7 p.m., and you’ll finally see why urgent care clinics are so great. How’s that for short wait times and flexible scheduling?

THEY ADMINISTER QUALITY MEDICAL CARE The irony in the growing popularity of urgent care centers is that they were once looked down upon and written off as quack “doc in a box” clinics. Fast forward to today, and these centers are now considered integral parts of the American healthcare system. The physicians that staff urgent care centers are made up of 47.8% family medicine practitioners, 30.1% are from emergency medicine, and 7.6% have an internal medicine background.

THEY’RE LESS EXPENSIVE Emergency room visits should be reserved for just that -- strictly medical emergencies. According to data from the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 129.8 million patients go to hospital emergency rooms each year. However, a large number of these patients could have received the medical attention they needed at an urgent care clinic and for far less. Did you know that on average, patients who visit the emergency room unnecessarily spend as much as $784 more than they have to for a three-hour visit? Think about wasting time and money. It’s often been said that there’s a right time for everything and the same mentality can be applied to how and where you decided to seek medical care. So, this cold and flu season and even for the rest of the year, consider going to an Urgent Care and save yourself some time and money.

LEAVE THE BLOAT Bloating is often an indicator that your gut is unhappy and there are several reasons why this could be. It’s widely regarded that certain foods can make you feel bloated, most commonly foods including wheat and dairy. However, there are some sneaky everyday foods that could secretly be bloating you!

By adding gut health superfood supplement powders into your daily diet, you will achieve optimum digestive health. The powders have been designed to support gut membranes, digestive enzymes and healthy stomach acids. They are easy to add to smoothies and juices and they most contain no added sugar or gluten.

If you suffer from bloating then perhaps it’s time to incorporate gut supplement powders and minimize your consumption of these foods!

Apples and Pears Both apples and pears are ideal for on the go snacking and are packed with fiber, ideal to satiate dieters. However, the fibter may be troublesome for sensitive tummies. If this is the case you can minimize your portion size and slowly increase it as your tolerance rises. Always ensure fruits are washed before eating, to avoid pesticides that kill gut flora and cause bloating.

Dried Fruit Dried fruit can be a great source of nutrients and fiber; however, it can cause bloating for those who suffer from fructose malabsorption. This occurs when the body has difficulty absorbing natural sugars. Also, it is often preserved with Sulphur dioxide which can cause immediate stomach discomfort and bloating.

Coffee

Canned Soup You may think your favorite canned soups are a healthy food choice but often they are loaded with salt and as a result, the kidneys struggle to clear it; causing water retention and bloating in the stomach. Choose cans with less salt or perhaps it’s time to try out a homemade recipe.

Adding dairy can trigger bloating if you're lactoseintolerant, but black coffee can cause some bloating troubles as well. Coffee itself is acidic, so if you have a sensitive stomach, it can act as an irritant and cause swelling. To avoid this, keep your dose of coffee small and monitor how you feel when you drink it. Remember to stay hydrated throughout the day!

Great End of Year Giving, Support the Arts! Did you enjoy this year's 5th Annual Glendale International Film Festival? Do you want to help make it happen again? Our goal for 2019 is to assist student film makers, women film makers and screenwriters pursuing the art of film making and screenwriting. The plan is to raise enough money to have our own building where we can conduct free classes for underprivileged students to study film making, screenwriting and those who really want to engage in the arts and have a venue to produce a worthwhile film festival year after year. There is a location on Maryland in Glendale that has everything we need to create a fantastic place to screen films, conduct classes and have the arts celebrated in one location. So, this is where the fundraising is so essential to put on a film festival for your enjoyment and to give the film makers and screenwriters, especially the students, a platform to show their work and engage our community of Glendale in this worthwhile event of benefit to all concerned.

WHAT DID WE DO THIS YEAR?

GIFF brought the entire community of Glendale together by showing films that dealt with issues that affect us all. From Veteran's health, to homelessness, Cancer and Autism to Alzheimer, we ran the gamut shedding light on these subjects and spotlighting the great organizations here in Glendale that are making a difference and actually solving the problems. Showing films and reading screenplays that are connected to these great service organizations gave everyone a chance to explore and express and find the wealth of riches that exist here in Glendale with our service groups.

Our international line up this year was stellar.....films from Amsterdam SPEECH, South Africa, STROOP Rhino Horn Wars, Israel THE LITTLE DICTATOR, Armenia, WHO WILL REMEMBER are some of the films that will impact the world. Our local films, CANCER CAN BE KILLED, THE PASSING PARADE and TRICKSTER will all surely be seen and screened worldwide. The theme of 2018 is bringing THE WORLD TOGETHER AS ONE! The theme of 2019 is BRING THE WORLD TOGETHER AS ONE IN GLENDALE! So, help us create the Arts Center of Glendale which will continue to honor women film makers, student film makers and international film makers who are creating outstanding content and writing great screenplays.
