MUST HAVE INGREDIENTS FOR MAXIMUM FLAVOR

Herbs and spices make food come to life, so don’t be afraid to wake up your dishes! A few pinches and dashes of spices can give a dish optimum flavor. Here are a few staple ingredients that will change the way you cook! GARLIC

Garlic is a staple ingredient that lives up many dishes. Available all year round, the bulbs are relatively cheap and last for ages. Garlic bulbs have about 5-8 cloves that can be crushed, chopped, minces or left whole in the skin and roasted. You can even buy chopped garlic soaked in white wine vinegar that’s kept in the fridge. Garlic has a long lasting taste but not ideal if you’re on a first date! A tiny amount goes a long way!

CORIANDER

Coriander, also known as Chinese parsley, is a plant with herbs and seeds that both can be used in cooking. It’s become a popular herb and used a lot in Asian and South American cuisine. It has a distinct citrus smell with peppery notes and adds maximum flavor to a number of dishes. Great in Thai and Indian curries and best added a minute before serving.

ALLSPICE

Allspice is a tree grown in West India that produces peppercorn-like berries. Historically, the berry flavor was mistakes for a combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper and clove, thus giving it the name. Although quite sweet, the flavors have earthy tones which can work perfectly in savoury dishes such as Jamaican jerk chicken and lamb stews.

BASIL

You can’t go wrong with fresh basil topped on a bolognaise, or tossed in a fresh green salad, or scattered onto a pizza! Commonly used in Italian cookies, the herb adds an abundance of flavor to tomato based sauces and is the main ingredient in green pesto. Basil is available all year round and can be found as a pot plant, in fresh bundles, as a seasoning or even frozen in most supermarkets.

CHINESE FIVE SPICE

Chinese five spice funnily enough is comprised of five distinct spices; cinnamon, star anise, fenugreek, clove, and pepper. It’s an easy spice to re-create at homes with many variations including, nutmeg and ginger. It’s a staple spice in many Vietnamese dishes and works well with pork.

Health Benefits of Coffee and Wine For many people, the day begins with a cup of coffee and ends with a glass of wine and that can be a good thing! If you have seen the headlines touting the health benefits of coffee and wine—and you’re among the 61 percent of Americans who down a daily cup of java or the 31 percent of drinkers who prefer a glass of wine to other alcoholic beverages—you’ve probably been thrilled to watch former vices morph into virtues. But how good are the drinks for your health? Some research shows that the benefits of coffee and wine, when consumed in moderation, may be similar, such as increasing life span, boosting blood flow, and diminishing the risk of depression. And coffee and red wine have been found to contain antioxidants, which may prevent disease. Drinking caffeinated coffee may help prevent Alzheimer’s disease, according to another study—which is attributed to the caffeine working in tandem with a compound in coffee to boost brain health. (If you drink only decaf, you still reap some benefit: Research has linked caf and decaf with a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes.)

Potential Downsides: Still, the news isn’t all good. In the short term, regular and decaf coffee can aggravate acid reflux. Caffeinated versions can exacerbate symptoms of anxiety disorders and insomnia, among other conditions—particularly in women, who tend to be smaller than men, as well as in people who metabolize coffee slowly. Too much red wine can cause weight gain; a fiveounce glass has 127 calories. Alcohol can be dehydrating, the main culprit behind hangovers. (But moderate coffee drinking, contrary to popular belief, is not dehydrating.)

Over the long run, drinking the amount of caffeine in two to three 8-ounce cups of brewed coffee per day appears to increase bone loss that can lead to osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. And several types of cancer are more common in people who drink any amount of alcohol.

How Much to Drink: It might all come down to you. Research shows that the health benefits of coffee and wine differ greatly depending on how quickly your genes tell your body to metabolize those drinks. Until genetic testing is more common and you can pinpoint your limits, moderation and common sense are key.
