DSMV by Louis Piette

We’re sick in the head. Unapologetically so. Sick; cold sweat, fever, Sick in the way I see myself in the mirror. Sick to the core of my bones because I decided to love myself.

Transsexualism, A word invented by a white man in a White coat. A condition, the man said, A false belief in a sick brain, Like cancer for your gender. He ties you to a hospital bed because You decided to love yourself.

Fuck the DSM-V Fuck the policies On being and becoming Fuck the time spent Trying to learn how to be For God’s sake Can I just love myself free

salt&cement, Jordan Elbualy

The grass has been cut recently, and the early morning humidity draws a smell from the ground that rests heavy in my nose, at once fresh and suffocating. I pass a canal and the grass is overwhelmed by the low-tide stench of fish and the algae that clings to the seawall. This, above all else, is what reminds me of water. Not the clean and sharp saltiness of a beach, or the roar of a tumbling river, but the oppressive, dark green smell of bait cages and fish guts. As a child, I would watch, awestruck, as my father, godlike, stripped skin and bones from meat, washing bloody guts into the canal below. A southern gothic in miniature.

Poem to the QM office, written pre quaratine. Grey C. Cardamom and vanilla, cloves and warmth and wear Paprika and cumin and diced onion Lemon and bitterness and apples Herringbone to clouds to plaster walls Laughter and alarms and a clicking kettle, whirring through the years Honey and damask and espresso Nails to lights to the moon in the sky with stars bold as a daydream, soft as hands on a winter night, as jazz through walls and honeycombed light, as golden numbers and pin sharp coats, left to wait Cozy and warm And utterly safe Content to wait another minute With the world half halted in music, For once patient to resume

MOVIE LIST Moonlight (2016)

A timeless story of human connection and self-discovery, Moonlight chronicles the life of a young Black man from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world while growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami. This movie is intense, and sometimes dark though with a hopeful message.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)

A gender-queer punk-rock singer from East Berlin tours the U.S. with her band as she tells her life story and follows the former lover/band-mate who stole her songs. Lots of sexual thematic content, and one scene contains strobe effects.

MOVIE LIST My Own Private Idaho (1991)

A loose adaptation of Shakespeare’s Henry IV and Henry V plays, this surreal adventure drama follows two fellow sex workers Mikey and Scott on their journey to find Mike’s mother. This is a very emotionally intense film for sure.

Y tu mama tambien (2001)

Two teenage boys from different backgrounds embark on a road trip with an older woman and together discover new insights about their sexuality and relationships. Set against a backdrop of political and economic upheavals in Mexico during the end of a decades long singleparty regime and the rise of a new opposition, this coming-of-age story handles complex themes with drama, humor, and beautiful cinematography. There is an incredible amount of sex in this movie, graphically depicted. There is some use of homophobic language.

MOVIE LIST Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)

A period piece, taking place in France at the end of the 18th century. Marianne is commissioned to paint a portrait of a young aristocrat, HĂŠloĂŻse, for her upcoming marriage. Secluded on an island, the two build a secret but passionate relationship together.

Mishima (1985)

Ambitious, highly stylized drama about Japan's most controversial post-WWII author, playwright, actor, director, and militarist, Yukio Mishima, whose passion to merge life and art led to his ritualistic suicide in 1970. Scene's of Mishima's life are contrasted with vivid dramatizations of key fictional works that grappled with his emotional crises.

MOVIE LIST But I'm A Cheerleader (2000)

An over-the-top, satirical romantic comedy about an All-American teenage girl who is sent to conversion therapy camp and finds love. Meghan is a high-school cheerleader in a less than satisfying relationship with her boyfriend. Her parents, fearing for her heterosexuality, send her to a conversion camp. Their plan backfires spectacularly however when Meghan meets Graham, a self-assured and rebellious outcast. A highly ridiculous and campy movie, that also manages to explore the social construction of gender and heteronormativity. Some homophobic language.
