Moving from an era of materialism where our happiness and success was measured by what we owned. Now it is no longer what you posses, but what we experience in life.
We are in an age that is reflecting a cultural shift in consumer culture, as we dare to peer over our shoulder at the receding financial crisis. New consumer behaviors are evolving with thoughtful spending, a return to simple lifestyles and a greater range of materials emerging from both nature and science. In this context, durability is not only concerned with 'rugged' materials, but also the notion of emotional durability: objects that age with dignity, allow provisions for upgrading and generally mean we keep using the same things for longer. As these new consumer experiences evolve, so do our expectations of products. The emergence of lighter and better products has brought forth a demand for perfection and durability, which is often unattainable.
"Nothing is secret anymore. From Swiss tax evasion to zero-hours contracts and loans to illegal logging companies, people powered groups … are shining a spotlight on corporate practices like never before, and, crucially, forcing real change,” says Jake Dubbins, managing director of Media Bounty.
These days, it seems everyone’s a fact checker. The internet gives people the power to expose errors, inaccuracies, and lies at the swipe of a smartphone, and spread their findings. With social media justice rising, corporate accountability is essential for consumers. And while peeling back the corporate curtain may seem risky, consumers seem more willing to forgive brands that admit their faults. Accountability can also have a positive impact on the bottom line. A recent Cohn & Wolfe survey found that 63% of global consumers would buy from a company they consider authentic over competitors, and 59% stated they tend to recommend authentic companies to their friends and family.

Ikea has partnered with the World Wildlife Federation (WWF) since 2002 on issues related to forests, water use and cotton production, to ensure its products are manufactured using sustainable practices. The brand's care for the environment is strongly communicated in ad campaigns. The partnership has ensured an increased reliance on credibly certified, responsibly managed forests and significant reduction in the use of pesticides, chemical fertilisers and water in cotton farming. Ikea's long-term goal is to source all its wood from that meeting FSC certification, and all of its suppliers are required to trace the origin of solid wood and board materials.
