President and VPs Join Ownership of Q&D Congrats Lance, Kevin, Jeff, Toby, and Duane Q&D Construction, an industry leader in construction for over 50 years, has announced a key change in its ownership structure. Effective February 1, 2018, Lance Semenko, Jeff Bean, Duane Boreham, Toby Basta and Kevin Linderman will be joining Chris and Mike Dianda as owners of Q&D Construction.

Congratulations to Q&D’s own Tony Ramirez on winning 3rd place at the 2018 Tournament of Champions competition in Ontario, CA! The competition showcased who’s the fastest, strongest, smartest carpenter across the Southwest region!

Tony qualified to compete in Ontario by first winning the drag race in the Carpenter Local 971 Skills Competition. There he completed events and tasks including nail driving, 4x4 cutting, lenker rods, and the lumber carry. In the local competition drag race he buttoned up a concrete wall system faster than the other racers. He won $1,000 and a trophy from Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters. Way to go Tony, we are proud of you!

Congratulations to Brian Hamilton for being awarded the first ever Nevada AGC Silent Samaritan Award! Brian was nominated for his work as part of the Hoopla Committee here at Q&D as well as for his work outside of Q&D with the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe collecting donations for holiday gifts and household needs. We are proud of Brian and his silent dedication to helping others here and in the community.

by Q&D was Mike Ochs for his outstanding work volunteering to fight fires and provide EMT services to Lyon County on behalf of the Lyon County Fire Protection District. He gives up time with his family and spends time after work at Q&D being on duty to serve the community during emergencies.

NEW CHOICE FOR BEHAVIORAL HEALTHCARE

A new in-patient, all-ages behavioral health hospital is now open to bring much needed services to Northern Nevada including addiction recovery and psychiatric care. This private CMAR project consists of 124 inpatient beds, nurse and staff facilities, full kitchen and dining facilities, patient courtyards, a gymnasium, and administrative offices.

The team worked together to create a safe environment for patients by following strict anti-ligature specifications and installation requirements throughout the building. Through the use of value engineering, Q&D saved the owner over $700,000. The

team worked hard to stay on schedule during the wettest winter in Reno history.

“Reno Behavioral Healthcare Hospital is the first hospital of its kind to be built from the ground up in our community in more than 35 years.

The modern, state-of-the-art facility features 80,000 square feet with 124 beds designed to elevate the level of care available in northern Nevada,” said hospital CEO Steve Shell. “We are very pleased with the outcome and believe it will provide a quiet, peaceful and therapeutic environment for our patients.”

This 136,000-square-foot food processing facility in Spanish Springs is officially up and running next month!

The building construction is structural steel with insulated metal paneling.

Q&D did the mass grading and all of the concrete.

Nevada is a prime location for the manufacturing industry. Its prime location in the U.S. provides access to 40 million customers in less than one day’s drive. It is also ideal for businesses to come here because of the affordable real-estate and tax incentives.

The project team transformed the University’s Lombardi Recreation Center into the new Ramon Sessions Basketball Performance Center which serves the Nevada Basketball team and all student athletes. This 106,000-square-foot facility features two full-length NCAA basketball courts and eight portable and retractable hoops. It has new gym flooring, LED lighting, and scoreboard along with a state-of-the-art audio system.

Adjacent to the overhauled gym there is a strength and conditioning center, nutrition bar (for protein shakes), new locker space areas, and coaches’ offices. The new office area includes a film room with storefront view to the basketball court for coaches, trainers and recruiters.

MOBILE CRUSHING AND HOT PLANT

For the past few years Q&D has had a mobile crushing and mobile hot plant. This has allowed us to win more paving work in remote places and seek opportunities over a larger geographical area. We self perform the crushing, this year alone producing 200,000 tons.

ESCAPE LOUNGE RNO

The hot plant has produced 180,000 tons of asphalt this year and has the capacity to produce 400 tons-per-hour!

Between concourses B and C at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport awaits the perfect spot to lounge, enjoy local food and drinks, connect with others, or watch planes take off and land while you wait for your flight. The Q&D team delivered the project on time and under budget, even working through the Thanksgiving holiday to meet the deadline. More Escape Lounges projects are on the horizon for the Q&D and MAG USA team.

To date we have supplied hot-mix on three NDOT projects in Nevada: Winnemuca, Carlin, and Mote. We recently won another project where we can use our mobile plant, the Eden Valley Bridge replacement, in Golconda, NV. These plants keep Q&D on the cutting edge of competition and customer service!

EYE ON CHEYENNE Cheyenne Regional Airport (CYS) will have a new terminal opening in summer 2018. The new 30,000 square-foot terminal will be compliant with federal standards, have expanded areas for traveler parking, new security screening systems, restrooms, vending machines and ample apron space for passenger flight operations.

Congrats to Joel Lindblom and Neil Bartlett on winning Q&D’s employee weight loss competition! Joel won 1st place and a $100 SCHEELS gift card and Neil won a $50 SCHEELS gift card for finishing 2nd place. Their hard work over 8 weeks has truly paid off, way to go guys! Great job to all of the employees that participated, we had a record breaking number of contestants for this challenge.

CRISIS MANAGEMENT TRAINING

Ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) should be checked monthly to make sure they are operating correctly. If you need a tester see building 6 at Q&D’s main office.

Important takeaways from the management training The Q&D management team recently had the opportunity to attend a crisis management training by the highly-rated international speaker Anthony Huey. Below are excepts from his seminar.

What’s Your Crisis Plan?

No matter how large or small, every organization needs to have a proper crisis communication plan in place; where they will know how to control the media and communicate messages to key audiences quickly at the time of a major disaster.

Many managers do perform extremely well under pressure. Many company crisis plans include a company spokesperson, crisis team members, a list of telephone numbers, and perhaps a list of potential crises and a hint at what to do. Also, most will include a phrase like “never say ‘no comment’ and always answer reporters’ telephone calls.” All of these points are important to have in the plan along with much more.

What is an Executive to Do? Experience is by far the best teacher in dealing with crises, and since many can’t easily gain that experience, the best is to reach out to a trained crisis management professional for help with developing your company plan. That’s why Q&D hired Anthony Huey to assist us and train superintendents and foreman about crisis communication.

Crises are nondiscriminatory. They can hit any of us, and when we least expect them. But whether or not you can plan on a particular crisis, you can always prepare for one.

Boy Scout Motto: “ Be Prepared” Together the team brainstormed about crises: What is the worst thing that could happen to our organization?

How will we deal with it? Anthony recommended that if there is even a slight chance that it could happen, assume that it will and write it in our communication plan.

Immediate Implementation Like every other plan, a crisis plan has to have a trigger.

When a crisis hits, there has to be a reporting process that moves it to the team leader in a matter of minutes. The team leader then needs to activate the team immediately.

In a crisis, time is a luxury you never have.

Before a specific crisis occurs, you can be certain that not even the best of crisis plans will include everything you need to handle the situation.

Anthony suggests we name one person to be our company spokesperson, and name a backup. In a crisis, we need to speak with only one voice. Q&D’s spokesperson is Lance Semenko and his backup is Chris Barrett. Refer all inquires to Lance.

Plan & Practice Now Q&D is developing a written plan and training program to help everyone know what to do if a situation arises. More to follow on this plan in the coming months.
