PUBLISHER'S NOTE

It’s one of our favorite issues of the year, our Food Issue, where in The Exclusives we highlight some of the best restaurants in the city. But before we get to that, we have to explore this issue's Arts & Culture section. We start off with artist Kate Schultz, whose work captures both intimacy and boldness in equal measure. We also mark a major milestone for Picture House Gallery, which is celebrating 50 years of championing art and artists in Charlotte. And we spotlight WellcomeMD, a modern wellness practice that’s rethinking what it means to feel good, inside and out.

In Food & Drink, we’re serving up a lineup that’s as dynamic as the city itself. From the elegant energy of The Jimmy and the laid-back charm of Marlee Jean's, to destination-worthy spots like Leluia Hall, Rada, Orosoko, and VINYL—there’s something here for every kind of diner. Whether you’re into small plates and natural wine or bold flavors and moody interiors, these restaurants are pushing Charlotte forward in all the best ways.

Our Home & Design section brings you into the spaces that inspire, from the interior vision of Beth Keim to the refined craftsmanship of Westwood and Augusta, and the work of Aguilar Design Studio. We’re also spotlighting TLG, a Charlotte-based company turning functional pieces like doors into bold, beautifully engineered statements that help define a home’s character.

On the travel front, we’re heading to Wrightsville Beach with Trailborn, a new beachfront hotel that blends thoughtful design with that laid-back coastal energy. And we’re also heading west to McDowell County, where towns like Marion and Old Fort are having a serious moment. Surrounded by forests, rivers, and big mountain views, this pocket of Western North Carolina is a paradise for fly fishing, waterfall hikes (like the newly reopened Catawba Falls), and some of the best mountain biking trails in the state.

And finally, we’ve put together the CLT 2025 Food Spread—our biggest local roundup yet. It’s a full-on love letter to Charlotte’s food scene, packed with our favorites from the new comers to the classics.

Hope you enjoy this one. We had a blast putting it together.

Until next time… PEACE!

Sincerely,

Shapes of Stillness

Painter Kate Schultz reflects on creative calm, color relationships, and finding inspiration in nature.

words SUNNY HUBLER / photos courtesy KATE SCHULTZ or by JP GRICE

Charlotte-based painter Kate Schultz draws inspiration from the quiet stillness of nature, blending realism with abstraction to create art that feels both rooted and dreamlike. After moving to North Carolina from Mississippi, Schultz has grown her practice in Charlotte’s creative community while exhibiting work that celebrates subtlety, color relationships, and peace.

“We fell in love with North Carolina as a whole and loved how Charlotte was nestled in between the mountains and the sea,” she says.

BBecoming part of the art community here grew out of her effort in meeting other artists in Charlotte, going to art socials, seminars and visiting art galleries. Today, her work can be found at Shain Gallery in Charlotte, Spoonbill Gallery in Greenville, SC, Bee Street Gallery in Fort Worth, Texas and Dallas, Texas and Jackson Street Gallery in Jackson, Mississippi.

Here, Kate tells us more about her career, her current avenues for expression, and what the future holds.

Tell us about your journey within the world of art. What initially introduced you to it?

I've always been a creative human and wanted to stray from the norm. As a kid and as an adult, I would consider myself a bit reserved. I found that art was a really great way to express myself when I couldn't find the right words. My maternal aunt is an artist and my late paternal grandfather was a woodworker... As a young teenager, I absolutely loved my high school art classes. My art teachers always created a safe space where I could fully express myself through painting and drawing.

I then started taking after-school art classes and had a really incredible teacher who taught me all the basics about oils, materials, mixing colors and technique. After high school, I went on to receive a BFA in Painting at the University of Mississippi. The art building on campus was my happy place, where I could be 100% myself.

You say that you're "currently focusing on color relationships and shapes." Tell us a bit more about that?

When I first went full-time [in 2020], I was really experimenting a lot. I did a full collection of pandemic specific paintings that were very colorful still lifes, yet had a sense of sadness to them. After those few years of worldly uncertainty, I started painting wild, floral, pattern-like paintings to represent the resurgence of life.

After a couple of years painting those florals, I really took a step back and simplified my work. I wanted people to look at my paintings and feel a sense of calm and not chaos. So I took a bunch of photos of peaceful scenes in nature and started painting extremely simplistic paintings with muted colors and shapes.

My paintings have since evolved into a kind of conjoined effort of shape, blocks of color and a bit of realism. I love intertwining realistic aspects of nature and then non-realistic aspects too. I find it interesting to pair both the normal and abnormal together.

what inspires you to continue pursuing art in your career?

Being outside always sparks creativity for me. I do a lot of observing on a daily basis. We have a big garden in our backyard, and I am constantly finding quiet moments to observe wildlife. We have a few vegetable plots, fruit bushes, many wildflower sections and nestled in them are bird baths and bird houses.

I'm really inspired by special and quiet moments in nature. In a world that's always "on", always loud, fast and constantly looking down at our phones, I find what really inspires me are the soft moments when we look up.

What is your artistic process like? My process starts with sketching out ideas, then drawing on the canvas, mixing colors, then painting multiple layers. I try to paint every day. Some days, I have to shoot photos or the icky administrative work, but most days are filled with just painting. I do try to take some creative soft days as well, so I don't ge t burnt out. Those are filled with simple sketching, walking or relaxing while observing nature.

I truly find that if you put in the hours, it is absolutely worth it. The more I paint, the more inspired I am and the better I get at my craft.

How does making art make you feel? What do you wish your work made others feel?

Making art makes me feel invincible. I truly feel on top of the world when I get into my studio, put some music on and start painting.

I really hope my work makes people feel happy, inspired and at peace. I love when art evokes a feeling, especially a feeling of happiness and joy. My paintings are quite whimsical, with the hope being, that they provide a place of momentary escape for the viewer.

Where do you see yourself and your work in the future?

I definitely see myself still painting, still growing with my galleries and most certainly still painting all things nature!

We have plans of eventually moving to the mountains. I'd love to have a big studio on our property, where I can paint larger pieces, host artist residencies as well as maybe art classes for youth and adults. We also have ideas of having lots of art swaps and garden potlucks with the community as well. Excited for what's to come in my future!

50 years of art, vision, and trust at Picture House Gallery.

AA 50 year mile marker in business is an impressive milestone. Bob Griffin, founder and owner of Picture House Gallery in Uptown, believes it's more than a marker of longevity — it's a celebration of vision, community, and a relentless commitment to fine art and personal service.

Opened in 1974, Picture House Gallery has become a solid institution in Charlotte’s creative landscape — neither flashy nor fleeting. Picture House truly stands apart in a city where many businesses have come and gone over the decades.

In no small part, that’s due to the inventory. The uniquely eclectic, ever-evolving collection of artwork includes abstracts, impressionists, marsh scenes, figurative works, sculpture, and art glass from regional, national, and international artists.

“You can get in trouble in here,” Griffin jokes. “There’s something for everyone.”

Walk through the doors and you'll find not just art, but a full-service experience. Picture House offers in-home consultations, professional appraisals, and a team that’s ready to

help you select, mount, and display your pieces in the right way for your space and style. Their goal? Turnkey service with an artist’s eye and a craftsman’s touch.

And then, of course, it’s all about Griffin himself. A Charlotte native, he is the heart and soul of the gallery. Bob can be found on-site six days a week—that hands-on approach has earned him deep trust from his clients over the decades. Whether you're a first-time buyer or a seasoned collector, Griffin’s photographic memory, sharp eye, and deep well of experience make every consultation personal and precise.

That trust extends beyond the art itself. For years, Charlotteans have relied on Picture House for its expertise in fine custom framing and art preservation. The gallery offers an extensive selection of mouldings and can design custom plexiglass or shadow boxes for personal items.

From 19th-century English oils requiring era-appropriate period framing to silk fabric refurbishing and antique restoration, the services are comprehensive and meticulous. Even faded documents and delicate oil paintings can be revived under the care of Picture House’s skilled technicians.

Griffin’s dedication is clear in every frame, every brushstroke, every piece that leaves the gallery — and in the loyal clientele who have made Picture House Gallery a fixture in Charlotte for half a century.

As the gallery celebrates its 50th year, it remains not just a testament to business success — it's a story of passion, perseverance, and the enduring power of art to transform spaces and lives.

Reclaiming the Relationship

Inside WellcomeMD’s bold vision for concierge medicine.

IIn an age when healthcare often feels rushed and impersonal, Dr. Charity Kates and Dr. Gary Klein are betting on something radical: time. Not just more time with patients, but the time to listen, follow up, and truly partner in long-term health.

Since opening WellcomeMD in 2019, Dr. Kates and Dr. Klein have led their Charlotte- and Mooresville-based practices with a distinctly modern approach to concierge medicine—what they call “Concierge 2.0.” They operate independent of the large healthcare systems that dominate the Charlotte market, and with fewer patients per physician than typical concierge models, and a focus on proactive care, they’re aiming to rewire the way primary care works. The result is something surprisingly rare: a doctor who knows your name, your goals, and has the time to help you meet them.

And WellcomeMD's two clinics offer more than boutique medical services. Theirs is a response to a system that often leaves patients waiting and physicians burned out. By embracing accessibility, health coaching, and advanced treatments that include early cancer screenings and microbiome testing, Dr. Kates and Dr. Klein are hoping to bring back something medicine has been missing: a meaningful connection.

Here, the doctors tell us more about just what makes WellcomeMD so different from conventional primary care, and from other concierge practices.

What is concierge or membership medicine exactly, and what makes it unique?

These days going to the doctor is a hassle. You often have to wait months to just get an appointment, then you wait to be seen, then you wait for tests and results. Concierge medicine offers its members same-day appointments, 24/7 access to your doctor, "waitless" waiting rooms, and a more holistic approach to treatment. Both our physicians are well versed in functional or “root-cause” medicine.

Tell us about why you emphasize functional medicine and what that is exactly.

Functional medicine is an area of medicine that focuses specifically on how and why disease occurs for each individual and allows for a personalized treatment plan. If a patient comes in with high blood pressure our doctor’s immediate response is not always to just put them on a prescription drug. They’re going to ask questions: What are you eating? How much exercise are you getting? What kind of stress are you under? If we can get to the root of what’s giving you high blood pressure, we may be able to manage it and you won’t need to take medication.

What can a new patient expect and who is WellcomeMD right for?

WellcomeMD is perfect for anyone who is currently frustrated with their health care, whether you’re tired of being sent to urgent care when you’re sick, not being listened to, or just need a little more hands-on guidance to help manage your health and wellness.

What might someone be surprised to learn about your services?

We do take insurance. Although we have an annual membership fee that is not covered by insurance, all our appointments are billed to insurance just like in the traditional care model.

Do you see functional and Western medicine as complementary?

Absolutely. Our doctors see functional medicine as another tool in their toolbox. Western medicine has accomplished great things in the form of drugs, procedures, and acute care treatments. Our approach to functional medicine emphasizes the interconnectedness of body systems and aims to restore balance and optimize overall health and well-being. This approach involves a comprehensive assessment of lifestyle, diet, environment, genetics, and other factors to develop personalized treatment plans.

B-Side’s Next Hit

From VINYL to Mi Cariño, B-Side Group is redefining the culinary experience in South End.

words SUNNY HUBLER / photos courtesy NICEDAY rendering by SOUTHWICK ARCHITECTURE + INTERIORS

South End is no stranger to reinvention. What was once a patchwork of warehouses and rail lines has evolved into one of Charlotte’s most creative, food-forward neighborhoods. It's no surprise that it's where B-Side Group, a hospitality collective helping define the next era of dining in Charlotte, decided to call home.

Founded on values of craft, story and care, B-Side isn’t busy chasing trends. "We are striving to deliver a world-class experience in cozy, laid-back environments,” says B-Side Group Partner Ankoor Patel, “and once guests are in the door, we follow through with flavorful, responsibly sourced and technically sound food and beverage.”

The Story of Mi Cariño interior rendering.

That balance first came to life at VINYL, B-Side’s debut concept. Inspired by analog nostalgia and neighborhood charm, VINYL has become a go-to for elevated comfort food and musically inspired cocktails. “VINYL is rooted in music, neighborhood energy and approachable hospitality,” says Patel. “It’s a place where people feel instantly at home.”

From the start, storytelling has been central to B-Side’s ethos. Whether through a tracklist or a mezcal cocktail, each project is built with purpose. “We draw inspiration from diverse influences,” B-Side Group Beverage Director Henry Schmulling says. “A song, a season, a memory—it all feeds into the guest experience.”

TNow, B-Side Group is setting the stage for something bolder. Opening this fall in South End, The Story of Mi Cariño is a cinematic, emotionally charged gastro-cantina. Led by Executive Chef Hector González-Mora, the concept draws from Latin flavors and personal heritage, anchored by an agave-focused bar and immersive design. “A chef like Hector merely needs to be allowed to cook from his heart and with his head," says B-Side Group Culinary Director Vince Giancarlo. "...For a chef as talented as Hector, you step back, let them cook and enjoy the tastings."

If VINYL is cozy and kinetic, Mi Cariño is refined and transportive. “Together, they represent the full range of what we strive to create—spaces that are thoughtful, vibrant and always evolving,” says Schmulling. The beverage menu, in particular, reflects this philosophy. “It’s never just about flavor,” he adds. “Every drink should enhance the mood, the moment and the story we’re telling.”

As Charlotte’s food and drink scene grows more competitive, B-Side Group stands out not through flash, but through intentionality. “We’re not here to flip ideas,” Schmulling says. “We’re here to build lasting, community-focused institutions.” Giancarlo agrees: “Ten years from now, we want people to still be talking about what we have created. No flashes in the pan—just long-burning fires.”

In a city finding its culinary voice, B-Side Group isn’t just adding to the volume—they’re composing something timeless.

Feeding Change

Chef Sam Hart’s fight for food equity.

words ELEANOR MERRELL / photos courtesy COUNTER-, THE BULB, AND KARMA TAUN PRODUCTIONS

Charlotte-based chef Sam Hart may be best known for their innovative tasting experience restaurant Counter- and their growing hospitality group, Irreverently Refined. That being said, Hart’s focus has expanded beyond the plate. A James Beard Award finalist and creative force behind several Charlotte eateries—including Spaghett and Maneki—Hart is now taking aim at one of the city’s most urgent challenges: food insecurity.

“Restaurants were created to nurture communities,” says Hart. “We’ve lost sight of that in some ways. I want to bring it back.”

At DTR, timeless fl avors meet modern elegance. What began as a humble wine bar in Dilworth has grown into a true Charlotte dining destination, with three neighborhood locations and a shared passion for Mediterranean-inspired cuisine, elevated cocktails, and an atmosphere that invites you to linger.

From shareable small bites, seasonal entrées and decadent desserts to an expansive wine list and signature cocktails like The Charlott ean, DTR is your go-to for a refined, yet comfortable date night done right.

From High-Concept Dining to Neighborhood Markets

Hart’s hospitality group, Irreverently Refined, departs from tradition with its employee-owned model and a mission to serve the community beyond just serving quality food. That mission recently led them to a partnership with The Bulb, a Charlotte nonprofit addressing food access in low-income neighborhoods through mobile farmers markets.

Unlike traditional food pantries that typically provide boxed or canned foods, The Bulb offers fresh produce—free of charge and free of judgment. Their signature policy is take what you need, and give what’s affordable—no proof of need required. Their mobile market truck rolls into 12 food-insecure neighborhoods every week, offering everything from leafy greens to strawberries, sourced through local farms, urban gardens, and grocery partners like Trader Joe’s.

In June, The Bulb launched a new market at the West Charlotte Recreation Center. The response was powerful: sixty people came within the first 45 minutes (most markets receive 20 customers total on their inaugural day). Thanks to the support of Hart and his team at Counter-, it will continue operating every Tuesday morning through the end of the year. Hart has committed $65,000 to support this initiative, which directly addresses the 11.8% of households in Mecklenburg County facing food insecurity. That equates to over 185,000 people living in food deserts—areas with limited access to affordable, healthy food.

“We firmly believe that fresh produce is a right, not a privilege,” Hart says. “Food equity is something we can actually solve at the local level, if we commit to it.”

Hospitality with a Heart

This commitment builds on Irreverently Refined Hospitality’s wider mission to support the Charlotte community. Over the past five years, the group has raised more than $500,000 for nonprofits such as Time Out Youth, The Relatives, ArtPop, and Carolina Farm Trust. But the collaboration with The Bulb marks a significant deepening of Hart’s community impact—one that blends his culinary ethos with his belief in social justice.

“Our goal is to eventually have enough of these markets to end food insecurity in the Queen City,” Hart says. With Chef Sam Hart at the helm—not just of a kitchen, but a movement—Charlotte’s food landscape is being reshaped, one market and one meal at a time.

Summer On The Patio

AA seasonal feast at The Jimmy.

As the sun lingers longer and the sound of cicadas fills the air, there’s no better place to savor a summer evening than The Jimmy, a pastaria and pizzeria on Selwyn Avenue. With Executive Chef Delaney Wahl at the helm and a focus on seasonal, ingredient-driven menus, The Jimmy’s summertime patio experience is as inviting as it is delicious.

Although inspired by French and Italian culinary traditions, the menu is truly rooted in regional flavors. Seasonal menu changes — and sometimes even daily changes — reflect the ingredients on hand for local farms and purveyors, such as Bradford Farms in Sumter, SC; Urban Gourmet Farms in Weddington, NC; Fair Share Farms in Pfafftown, NC; and Boy & Girl Farm in Waxhaw, NC. With the seasonal availability of local produce steering the ship, guests experience a tide of tastes that can summon savory memories of the season.

Summer, for instance, brings an explosion of color and flavor to the plate: heirloom tomatoes, sweet corn, asparagus, South Carolina peaches, strawberries, and vibrant basil are just a

few of the main characters on The Jimmy’s menu this summer. Whether it’s a beautifully chilled heirloom tomato and basil gazpacho served with salmon, or coal-roasted asparagus nestled alongside a fresh red snapper filet, each dish celebrates the peak of its ingredients' natural flavor.

“We try to keep [produce] as ‘untouched’ as possible by the time it hits the menu,” says Wahl. “It’s about letting the produce shine and treating it with the same care and attention as the proteins.”

This connection to local agriculture is central not just to the food menu, but to the bar program as well. Bar Manager Braeden Carlton brings the same seasonal lens to craft cocktails and beverages, offering bright, herbaceous summer drinks that pair perfectly with a golden hour dinner on the patio. Even desserts and charcuterie are touched by the season. Expect fresh fruits in their peak, and cheese boards anchored by local artisans like Goat Lady Dairy (Climax, NC) and Sequatchie Cove (Sequatchie, TN).

“We're implementing some of our own flair and broadening the scope of what we're capable of creating.”

Dining at The Jimmy in the summer is meant to evoke the relaxed, breezy joy of a Mediterranean escape — without ever leaving Charlotte. Guests can enjoy al fresco seating while exploring a menu that blends familiar favorites with seasonal flair. For example, the signature Jimmy Chop Salad and beloved Margherita Pizza remain year-round staples, but new additions like squid ink pasta with roasted yellow corn, housesmoked octopus, and Salmon Crudo reveal a culinary team that embraces change and challenges.

“We're implementing some of our own flair and broadening the scope of what we're capable of creating,” explains Wahl. This approach reflects an ongoing dedication to refining not just individual dishes, but the overall dining experience. From

handmade pasta crafted with over 290 pounds of semolina each week to dry-aged ribeyes with charred ramp butter, every detail reflects the team’s goal: offering the best quality dining experience possible.

So whether you're stopping in for a glass of rosé and a small plate under the string lights, or settling in for a full-course dinner, The Jimmy's summer patio is the place to be — where seasonality meets sophistication, and every bite tells a story of a Mediterranean getaway powered by a Carolina harvest.

MARLEE JEAN’S RAW BAR AND KITCHEN’S

Hamachi Crudo

As you turn the corner off of Davidson’s Main St. onto Depot, you’re quickly met with one of Davidson’s newest concepts: Marlee Jean’s Raw Bar. Inside, King Canary and Marlee Jean’s operate as two separate entities within the same space (almost like a mini food hall,) with King Canary heading up the bar program on one side and Marlee Jean’s serving all the food. It's the only raw bar in the area.

Naturally, any of Chef Erick Crawford’s raw fish offerings are standout. I’ve ordered the hamachi crudo a few times now: It’s a reliably refreshing dish combining the delicate white fish with a ginger ponzu vinaigrette, pickled fresno chilis, watermelon radish, scallions, and a little sweetness from citrus fruit. Especially in the warmer months, this dish is a must-order.

LELUIA HALL'S

Prime Filet

Leluia Hall, a new surf-and-turf restaurant in Dilworth, is the latest from acclaimed local restaurateurs Jeff Tonidandel and Jamie Brown. The opulent interior includes both a main and private dining room, a wine cellar, a mezzanine dining area with its own bar, and a raw bar where seafood is served fresh. Somewhat similar to their Supperland concept, you can expect family-style, shareable dishes, and prime cuts of steak.

If you want a taste of one of their best menu offerings, order the prime filet with nduja butter. A "prime" designation indicates the highest quality grade of beef. The flavorful compound butter is made by taking a softened butter and adding in nduja, a spicy, spreadable pork sausage from Calabria, Italy. It’s spicy, smoky, and savory, adding a rich layer to a perfect cut of steak.

RADA’S

San Sebastian Martini

If you’re the glass-half-gin type, Rada, in Myers Park, has one of the best sips in the city.

This chef-driven, globally inspired eatery opened in early 2025, and it became quickly clear they would be giving Charlotte diners a chance to raise a glass to something a bit bold for this city. Offering American cuisine in an intimate setting, Rada also has one of the best cocktail programs going.

A favorite among regulars, The San Sebastian martini combines gin with Tximista vermouth, a bit of floral herbaceousness from bay leaf, heat from a basque pepper brine, and olive oil. Want to elevate it further? For a few extra bucks, add the Gilda garnish atop your tini – it’s a popular Basque appetizer consisting of a cocktail skewer with a green olive, a pickled guindilla pepper, and a salted anchovy.

Said to “be inspired by a dancer's perfume,” the Orosoko Martini combines Tito’s vodka, lemon, vanilla and passion fruit with a shot of sparkling wine. The balance between a tropical fruit-forward cocktail and crisp bubbles will delight the most discerning palates, and the beverage pairs well with both Latin and Asian seafood items on Orosoko's food menu.

One Studio, Every Detail

FFor nearly two decades, Aguilar Design Studio has brought elegance, craftsmanship, and warmth to homes across the Carolinas and beyond. Founded by husband-and-wife duo Laura and Aaron Aguilar, the Charlotte-based design/build firm has earned national recognition — including features in Forbes and Better Homes & Gardens — for creating classically inspired homes that are as livable as they are luxurious.

Originally from Southern California, the Aguilars relocated to Charlotte over 10 years ago. “We came to visit some family and loved the area, cost of living, and the change of seasons,” says Laura. “So we made the big move across the country!” They’ve lived here ever since, offering a one-stop shop for custom homes, renovations, and full-service interior design through Aguilar Design Studio.

Aaron, a licensed contractor with a background working alongside architects and engineers, leads the construction side of the business. Laura, the principal designer, brings a deep love of timeless interiors and a passion for transforming houses into beloved family homes. From architectural plans and project management to selecting bespoke furnishings, they oversee every step of the process.

Most of Aguilar Design Studio’s clients reach out when their homes no longer serve their needs. “People often just get tired of their house not ‘working’ for how they live,” she explains. “Our job is to help them reimagine their space and make smart decisions about where to invest to get the most long-term value.”

No matter the project, Aguilar Design Studio shepherds clients through five key phases: concepting, design, procurement,

construction, final walkthrough, and turnkey installation. This approach is not just a workflow—it’s the foundation of their success. “We’ve perfected our systems over the years,” says Laura. “And we’ve learned not to stray from them.” Part of upholding that commitment means ensuring at the project outset that clients understand and embrace the timeline. “We’re not the right fit for someone who wants a rushed job; beauty takes time,” explains Laura. For renovations, the design phase can take 12 to 16-plus weeks, with construction spanning anywhere from four months to over a year, depending on the project’s scale and complexity.

Their work is defined by a signature aesthetic: warm, timeless, and inviting. “We design spaces to be lived in and enjoyed,” says Laura. “We blend functionality and beauty to reflect each client’s lifestyle.” Whether it's a kitchen renovation, a whole-home build, or a guesthouse addition, every project revolves around a thoughtful, detailed design process. Another pillar of their studio is thoughtful sourcing. From eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient systems to sourcing art from local artisans to partnering with vendors to create custom products, sustainability and high quality craftsmanship are central to the studio’s ethos.

“People often just get tired of their house not ‘working’ for how they live. Our job is to help them reimagine their space.”

Above all, the couple attributes their success to a strong partnership—both professionally and personally. “Our biggest accomplishment isn’t a single project,” says Laura. “It’s the fact that we can be happily married and happy business partners every single day.”

For clients seeking a trusted team to design, build, and fully furnish a home that will stand the test of time, Aguilar Design Studio delivers with style and conviction. “We fully understand that a home is often the biggest investment our clients will ever make,” says Laura. “And we don’t take that responsibility lightly.”

Style Meets Storage

WWhen it comes to our annual Food Issue, we are always on the hunt for unforgettable kitchens or dining areas… but a pantry door? Like with many design elements, the “basic” versions can often go unnoticed, a bit of a background noise, but when elevated, the very same item can be showstopping.

TLG Doors & Hardware’s aluminum pivot door is an European pivot system with its own integrated hardware, available in several other colors and glass options. It’s light and flexible and allows a wallpapered, jewelbox of a well-designed and kept pantry to be in full view.

Part of a larger kitchen remodel from designer Carol Diamond of Fiddle Leaf and Fern, the pantry remains one of the most important spaces in the house. Home or business owners looking to add custom doors or windows to their space can schedule an appointment to view their showroom in Rock Hill, SC. With a range of designs, finishes, sizes and configurations to choose from, TLG Doors & Hardware can create something to suit every style.

Neutral Kitchen, Natural Warmth

The heart of this home gets an elevated look from Lucy and Company.

Designer Beth Keim of Lucy and Company brings her signature blend of warmth and architectural intention to this stunning, all-neutral kitchen—a true showpiece completed in January 2025.

Designed in collaboration with Garrett Nelson, the space is part of a larger home built with a focus on clean lines, light-filled interiors, and effortless flow. With two kitchen islands and dual dining spaces, all overlooking the backyard pool area, the layout was thoughtfully planned to feel open and functional, with smart storage solutions throughout.

Beth blended her client’s love of light, neutral tones with natural wood finishes to create a space that feels both calm and inviting.

“I wanted the warmth of wood to mix with my client’s desire of all light colors with the focus on architectural details with the glass through and through upper accent cabinets,” she said.

To improve accessibility and visual balance in the din-

ing area, Beth made a subtle but impactful design decision: “The banquette was long, so I chose to split the table into two squares for easy access.”

Standout details include the ribbed custom stove hood, double-edged stacked countertops, and striking brass hardware—all contributing to the kitchen’s layered yet minimalist aesthetic. Pieces from Global Views, Arteriors, and Visual Comforts complement the look, adding depth without overwhelming the neutral palette. Custom cabinetry is by Bill Truitt Woodworks.

“In this case, I was able to combine the dining and kitchen in a very cohesive way, it’s truly the heart of this house and a showstopper.”

Modern

At Westwood Custom Homes, the leadership team — Myles Gordon, Chris Rich, and Brian Fanning — have built over 200 homes in the Charlotte area. As a result, they have the experience and knowledge needed to provide this level of quality to their clients.

When it comes to this stunning Foxcroft abode, the clients sought Westwood out for a unique, custom design to fit their tastes and lifestyle. This transitional modern design presents as a beautiful but understated one-anda-half story from the outside but once inside, the design flows effortlessly into generous and expansive indoor and outdoor spaces.

The front elevation features a covered front porch with white columns and black double doors, adding symmetry and curb appeal. The pitched roofline includes multiple gables, creating visual depth and enhancing the secondstory profile. On the left, a substantial stone chimney rises prominently, reinforcing the home's classic elements.

The design includes unique features like a four-car garage, custom millwork and cabinetry, a full-size basement with safe room and golf simulator, a primary suite wing, and much more.

Lakeside Luxe

A custom-built waterfront escape by Augusta Homes captures the soul of Lake Norman with elevated design, seamless indoor-outdoor flow, and unmistakable Southern charm.

SSet against the shimmering backdrop of Lake Norman, this stunning waterfront home blends open-air elegance with thoughtful function. Designed and built by Charlottebased Augusta Homes, the residence is a testament to refined Southern living with a coastal ease that nods to the homeowners' Florida roots.

Poised on a coveted lot in one of Lake Norman’s most exclusive gated enclaves, this lakefront residence is the culmination of intentional design, natural beauty, and a builder who knows how to elevate both. Developed in 2019 on 15 acres of pristine shoreline, the community was envisioned as a high-end retreat with only 11 custom homesites. Augusta Homes not only partnered on the initial design of the neighborhood’s signature home, but also played a leading role in presales—helping to attract families eager for lake living done right.

For this home in particular, the vision was clear from the start: create a showpiece that invites connection and celebrates the lake from every angle. With a stunning outdoor pool and oriented to capture panoramic water views, the layout encourages movement between inside and out. The large entertaining wing—with a sleek bar, masculine home theater, and direct access to outdoor dining and a fireplace—is perfect for hosting, while a residential elevator offers effortless access to the upper level.

Natural light pours into the airy, white-toned interiors, where wood textures and organic finishes soften the home’s clean lines. A wine room adds flair and function, and the spacious owner’s bath includes a sauna and a custom walk-in closet. One of the standout design details: the custom-fabricated, backlit mirrors in the owner’s bath-

room, a signature touch Augusta continues to refine with its vendors.

Though both homeowners remain active in the real estate industry, this residence marks a meaningful shift—relocating from Naples, Florida, and furnishing the home with a personal touch. The wife led the interior furnishing effort, working alongside designers to achieve a look that’s elevated yet grounded.

The architecture is Labella Residential, interior design is from Artistic Interiors, and the interior furnishings were led by Luxury Interiors by Carmen.

The wine room is from Wine Cellars of the Carolinas, the appliances are Subzero & Wolf, the tile is from CS Brown Tile

and the engineered white oak floors are AA Hardwoods.

Founded on craftsmanship and care, Augusta Homes has earned a reputation for high-end, full-service building throughout the Charlotte region. Known for shaping some of the area’s most sought-after neighborhoods, Augusta remains involved long after move-in through its HomeCare program—ensuring every home, and every detail, stands the test of time.

Mountains, Murals, and Main Streets

The natural beauty and small-town charm of McDowell County.

NNestled amid the peaks of western North Carolina, McDowell County is a must-visit area for nature lovers, history buffs, and anyone in search of small-town charm. In fact, McDowell’s welcoming mountain towns, especially Marion and Old Fort, plus its proximity to the Blue Ridge Mountains and the myriad activities this region affords, make the county a destination for those seeking both adventure and cultural attractions.

Nature’s Playground

McDowell County is surrounded by natural beauty — South Mountains State Park, Lake James State Park, Linville Gorge Wilderness, and Pisgah National Forest all border the county, offering a tapestry of trails, waterfalls, forests, and waterways both within and just outside county lines.

For example, Tom’s Creek Falls, located to the north, offers a short, family-friendly hike to a stunning waterfall. Lake James State Park to the east offers kayaking, swimming, and forested strolls. Plus, Lake James neighbors Fonta Flora’s original brewery location and farm in Nebo, which is the perfect pit stop after a sun-soaked afternoon.

For a tougher challenge, head to Woods Mountain in northern McDowell County to tackle one of western North Carolina’s most demanding trails. The 24.9-mile single-track loop weaves through rugged terrain and intersects with the famed Mountains-to-Sea Trail, drawing ambitious hikers and mountain bikers from across the region.

If convenience and proximity is top priority, visit Mt. Ida Wilderness Area, a 36-acre park nestled in the heart of the county. By virtue of its central location, Mt. Ida is a stone’s

words JP GRICE / photos JP GRICE or BRETT BARTER

throw from anywhere in McDowell County, but its closest neighbor is the town of Marion.

McDowell’s Small Town Charm

At the center of McDowell County lies Marion, a town steeped in history. Named after Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion, a.k.a. the “Swamp Fox,” the town was officially established in 1845 and grew rapidly as a railroad hub by the turn of the 20th century.

Today, Marion’s downtown celebrates both its past and its vibrant present. Stroll along the Founders Art Walk, featuring six murals across three blocks that honor local heritage. Sample locally distilled spirits at Cooper Creek Distillery, where moonshine culture — once underground — is proudly on display.

If you love treasure hunting, visit the Vintage Market, which is stocked with antiques, records, and more. On Tuesdays and Saturdays during warmer months, don’t miss the Tailgate

Market. This open-air pavilion buzzes with local farmers, artisans, and bakers selling everything from fresh produce and cheeses to handmade crafts. While in downtown Marion, be sure to check out Marion Wines to sample some local and world-class wines. Flavors on Main general store and fly shop is a great place for just about everything you could need from merch to gear. If you like barbecue, just out of town Countryside Barbecue is a must. The pork was amazing, and—to our surprise, since it’s difficult to find outside of Texas—their brisket was very tender and flavorful.

West of Marion lies Old Fort, a town with pre-Revolutionary War roots and a growing reputation for outdoor fun. In fact, history comes alive at Old Fort’s Mountain Gateway Museum, which showcases life from the early settler era to the 20th century. Just down the road, visit a replica of Davidson’s Fort, which was originally built in the 1770s and for many years operated as the westernmost colonial settlement.

A place where mind, body and spirit escape.

Perfectly nestled between Blowing Rock and Boone, with the infamous Blue Ridge Parkway, and Appalachian Ski Mountain nearby, this idyllic chalet is yours to slow down, reconnect, restore, and explore. Escape to Moon-A-Chalet for an unforgettable retreat in the heart of the High Country.

To book your stay, scan the QR code or visit livestoried.com/rentals.

To scratch a creative itch, admire local art along the Seven Wonders mural trail, or poke around in Arrowhead Gallery and Studios, which showcases regional artwork and hosts classes. NANU Gallery is another small but well-curated art gallery right downtown that we enjoyed. For outdoor fun, throw on a pair of waders; as one of North Carolina’s 15 Mountain Heritage Trout Cities, Old Fort is a fishing haven with Curtis Creek flowing nearby. Then, for waterfall enthusiasts, Catawba Falls and Upper Catawba Falls are a must.

When hunger strikes, grab a beer and a bite at Hillman Beer and dine creekside. Whaley Farm Brewery is also a wonderful place to get a local beer. If you are more into your grapes, Euda Wine is the place to be. For more casual eats, check out 27 Main’s rustic-modern vibe or Black Beary’s Cafe for hearty Southern comfort food. Need a caffeine fix? Gogo’s Cinnamon Rolls and Coffee or Seeker Coffee have you covered.

From waterfall hikes and challenging bike trails to charming towns steeped in heritage, McDowell County has plenty to offer for a weekend escape from the bustle of the Queen City.

Just eight miles from Wilmington, North Carolina, off of I-40 East, is the active beach community of Wrightsville Beach. As a central point between New York and Florida, this town draws visitors from up and down the East Coast.

This past January, Wrightsville Beach opened its first resort. The 1960s hotel that was formerly the Blockade Runner has been reimagined as Trailborn Surf & Sound. This waterfront hotel has a cozy yet modern feel, and welcomes guests to enjoy a relaxing and family-friendly getaway. You can enjoy a water view from any of their 151 rooms, either soundside or surfside.

You can enjoy a nice breakfast or dinner in their vibrant dining room, which includes a bar featuring Old World wines, or on the deck with an outdoor view.

Of course, going to a beach town, you’ll want to enjoy the out-

doors. Go for a walk along the shore, swim in the water, and come back to complimentary beachfront lounging with chairs and umbrellas for guests to relax and relish the ocean breeze.

If you’re in the mood for more of an adventure, book paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing, and more through the resort. Trailborn Surf & Sound offers three different kinds of sailing to suit guests’ tastes, including a half-day private sailing excursion, a wave-sailing lesson, and a relaxing evening cocktail sail for a nice wind down at the end of the day.
