Our Team Duane Boreham

VICE PRESIDENT, AVIATION GROUP Duane leads Q&D’s Aviation Group which has spearheaded projects from single kiosk installations and multi-million-dollar baggage system upgrades to terminal expansions. With a background in project management, Duane contributes over 30 years of experience to our aviation group.

LaMonte Forgays OPERATIONS MANAGER LaMonte manages aviation project personnel and is the lead person for many of the larger projects that Q&D’s Aviation Group undertakes. As operations manager, he provides additional focus on business development for the group, drawing on his strong relationships with airport, airline and aviation subcontractor personnel across the country.

Steve Gilkeson GENERAL SUPERINTENDENT Steve is the Aviation Group’s General Superintendent. He’s an aviation expert with an specialty for overseeing multi-phased projects and bringing the collaborative mindset necessary for alternative delivery methods. His experience includes remodels for Southwest Airlines and most notably, the new airport terminal in San Luis Obispo, CA.

The Aviation Group In 2014, after nearly a decade of successful work in and around airports, Q&D formally announced the inception of its Aviation Group. Q&D’s introduction to the aviation world began in 1999 with a restroom remodel and the construction of a sidewalk canopy structure at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport [RTIA] resulting in a longstanding relationship that continues to thrive.

TRUSTED I N TRY IN G TIME S Due to the events on 9/11, the RTIA was forced to make significant modifications to its security protocols. Understanding the complexity and high profile nature of the upcoming challenge, RTIA chose to rely on their relationship with Q&D. In 2007, Q&D was selected as the Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) for the In-Line Explosive Detection System

It was during this multi-year project that Q&D was able to acquire the necessary knowledge and experience that has propelled us to continue performing work in airports across the country.

PROJECT ENGINEER Gonzalo assists the project management team in providing efficient document control and scheduling. He is responsible for submittal management along with implementing and maintaining a project’s online communication systems. Gonzalo also assists the project management team with procurement research as well as subcontractor quality control.

It was also this project that allowed us to establish relationships with many of the airport’s tenants/ stakeholders including airlines, rental car providers, TSA and concessionaires. Standing out among the many stakeholders were Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, Paradies, and SSP.

RNO AUTO MATE D B AG G AG E CHEC K - IN ( AB C) P RO JE CT In 2007, space was at a premium at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RTIA). Large Explosive Detection System (EDS) machines located in front of the ticket counters interrupted the ticketing process and crowded the check-in area. The Reno Tahoe Airport Authority (RTAA) urgently needed to comply with the changing regulations requiring in-line baggage screening. With a 28,000 square-foot expansion underway, the RTAA arranged to bring in Q&D Construction as the Construction Manager at Risk for the Automated Baggage Check-in

project to work alongside Gresham Smith and Partners and the RTAA to develop budgets, logistics plans and phasing for the project with the goal of keeping the airport 100% operational at all times. Q&D and the project team successfully planned and constructed this $51 million overhaul of the ticketing baggage check-in and baggage handling process at the RTIA without receiving a single airline or traveler complaint.

As a result of the project, the pre-existing, lobby-crowding EDS machines were replaced with new state-of-the-artequipment and relocated to a more inconspicuous location

behind Airline Ticketing Office (ATO). New oversize lines were capable of screening high volumes of baggage in a more efficient manner. Lift assist devices were the first ergonomically designed system of its kind, assisting TSA employees in lifting baggage from the belts, effectively reducing on-the-job injuries. The back of house screening and baggage handling equipment was now intuitively arranged and easily maintained.

Multiple airline moves and countless subphases of the project threatened to eat up valuable budget dollars. The team strategized, purchased, installed and engineered a

temporary structure adjacent to the ticket lobby along the inner roadway of the main airport roadway system to be used as an interim check-in facility. This structure housed the baggage handling system and the airport’s existing security equipment. Temporary ticket counters were fabricated and installed in what had previously been the curbside drop-off area. This allowed airline ticketing activities to continue uninterrupted and created a seamless, temporary screening and baggage handling area that complied with TSA security regulations. Most importantly, it shortened the construction schedule by approximately two years and saved over $4 million.

R N O G AT E WAY PR O J E C T In 2012, the RTIA was shuffling passengers through two separate security-screening areas on opposite ends of the central corridor. When the airport authority contemplated a restructuring of this cumbersome system, they called on Q&D to lead the way. With the AAAE conference just around the corner, the non-negotiable expectation to get passengers to their gates with zero obstacles, compounded by the lack of space and a growing population in the area, this project would prove to be a mighty feat. Ultimately, the design team advised expansion as the best approach. This strategy would make it possible to consolidate the two security-screening areas, moving them to the central concourse, and make room for new postscreening concession areas. In order to stay ahead of the critical path, we relied on our internal heavy civil group for utility work, foundation excavation, and paving. From the start of preconstruction through completion of the complex utility and foundation work, the input and resources of experienced personnel coupled with the dedication of a unified team was key to

orchestrating the horizontal construction tasks – just feet from active boarding gates.

The Passenger Experience Early in the design phase, the RTAA emphasized the importance of the Gateway project. For visitors, the result of our efforts would be their first impression of the city of Reno. For residents, it would become a place of pride representing their home. The ease with which a traveler moves through the space, the comfort of their experience, and the quality of their surroundings would start and end their visit -- and more importantly, influence their decision to return. The team took time to understand this overarching priority and wove it through every aspect of the project. The remodel baggage claim area, in particular, reflects the character of the Reno-Tahoe region and includes a terrazzo river with metal replicas of Lahontan cutthroat trout species found in the Truckee River.

T HE R ENO R ESU LT Today, the Reno-Tahoe International Airport is a more open and user-friendly environment with upgrades that reflect the nature and character of the Reno-Tahoe region. The expansion included sustainable materials and easy to maintain systems that provide a more integrated, uniform design throughout.

In 2015, our team was selected by the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport (SBP) to construct a new, 56,000 square-foot terminal. As the builder on this $32 million project, we worked alongside SBP, design team leader RS&H and Arcadis.

The new terminal was designed to accommodate economic growth and increased tourism in the County to further connect the community with major metropolitan areas. It’s also instrumental in serving students, staff, and families of Cal Poly University. The two-building facility includes a new ticketing lobby, baggage claim, passenger and baggage screening,

exemplified our flexibility and commitment to quality which far-exceeded SBP‘s expectations.

Coordinating the ticket counter fabrication was a perfect opportunity for us to demonstrate our small-medium-hub airport operation knowledge, accumulated over years of working with airlines all across the USA. To hone in on the best options, our team traveled to LAX, SEA, and HOU for design ideas where we would review each potential manufacturer’s finished quality. Ultimately, we suggested a modular system for ticketing positions and shared implementation ideas for creating positions (counter locations) that are more easily modified/adjusted to varied airline branding and equipment. Incorporating public art was an important facet of the airport’s plan for a facility with real connections to the community. The team worked together to realize artistic opportunities like the 747 cowling that became the information desk and the set of airplane tails that look as though they are resting against the wall. Ideas suggested by the SBP airport team inspired our teams to find ways to make their design dreams a reality.

T HOU GHT FU L INNOVAT ION The boarding bridges are the first glass-sided, low rider passenger boarding bridges installed in a US airport. The design team worked together with the local fire department and building department to communicate technical and

safety specifications of the equipment and gain required approvals. The jetways offer views of the airport while boarding and deplaning that add interest to the SBP travel experience.

In 2017, we led the new terminal construction project at Cheyenne Regional Airport. As the CMAR, we worked alongside the CYS staff and Alliiance design team. The single-story 26,500 square-foot building had room for 200 waiting passengers and screening equipment to accommodate 50 people with ample room to grow. New amenities include vending machines, executive meeting spaces, and free parking. The new apron can hold three Boeing 737‘s. Finishes reflect the geography of the airport’s location, where the high plains meet the front range. A welcoming canopy serves as a front porch and the  est. 1964

exterior block reflects the stone buttes and rugged Wyoming terrain.

Project Highlights: an aircraft apron sized to fit three Boeing 737’s & thoughtful finishes that reflect the local area. This airport now serves as an important economic gateway for Cheyenne. Its new terminal services multiple regional flights from several airlines which were attracted to offer connections at CYS. The terminal gives Wyoming travelers an artful alternative to the heavy traffic and long drive ahead as they continue on to their destinations.

This light-filled, two-story, 12,000-square-foot center functions as the Reno-Stead Airport’s terminal for the 200 aircraft and tenants, as well as an emergency operations center for the Reno-Sparks community. As a result of our team’s hard work and thoughtful collaboration, the space also provides an administrative office for the airport managers, a pilot’s lounge, and a conference room for community use. Appropriately named The Freedom Flight Terminal, this facility is dedicated to U.S. veterans who have served in the armed forces. Progressive Design Build

Our team partnered with design team, CSHQA, to lead the progressive design-build efforts to expand Fresno Yosemite International Airport in an effort to meet the area’s increasing travel demands. Having experienced considerable growth over the last ten years, the facility is projected to exceed 2,000,000 passengers. The airport’s master plan update, completed in December 2018, identified a significant number of high priority projects and recommended expansion as the best solution. Once finished, our terminal expansion project will have added two gates served by passenger boarding bridges, a new international arrivals facility, outbound

and characteristically artful designs in a new ticketing lobby. The terminal entrance will be renovated to include canopies adjacent to an expanded entry to accommodate additional and consolidated ticketing kiosks and improved passenger flow. Like each of our aviation projects, our mission at Sonoma is to create a state-of-the-art, efficient, secure, and aesthetically pleasing experience for passengers and airport stakeholders alike.

Having experienced considerable growth over the last ten years, the facility is projected to exceed 2,000,000 passengers. baggage screening and baggage makeup systems, an expanded security checkpoint, additional concession and support spaces, expanded air-side ramp, and land-side modifications. The construction of the project, including multiple phases totaling over 500,000 SF, is expected to be completed in November of 2024.

With passenger traffic steadily increasing at Glacier Park International Airport, we’ve partnered with local Kalispell entity, Swank Enterprises, to begin construction that will triple the airport’s existing square footage. As the CMAR, our team will lead this $85 million terminal expansion. The number of terminal gates will grow from five to seven, six of which will have jet bridges, along with a total relocation of the outbound baggage system.

We look forward to collaborating with stakeholders including concessionaires, airport authorities, and the local community to bring this project to life. Sitting next to a national park will certainly require a high level of regulatory compliance, not to mention the delivery of a space that compliments the beauty of surrounding landscapes.

In partnership with Garco Construction, Q&D was selected as the CMAR for The Spokane International Airport project, known as TREX, to provide more efficient airport passenger circulation and airline operations in order to meet current and near-term passenger and stakeholder needs. creative modification. We cut the existing door in half, installed a heavy piano hinge, a bolt latch for the active top half and a shelf for the lower half. In just a single day, our team extinguished what could have been a very expensive obstacle. Southwest was able to move in on-schedule with a total door cost of less than $1,000. Such quick thinking and ingenuity began our longstanding relationship with this major airline and projects in over 100 airports.

A strong desire to keep up with market trends and design prompted Southwest airlines to undertake a total rebrand starting in 2015 that included collateral livery and signage in every single airport Southwest serves, plus their conversions of former Air Tran locations.

Q&Ds relationship with Southwest Airlines began with a revision to a single door. Less than a week prior to their scheduled move-in, Southwest performed their final punchlist walkthrough. It was during this walkthrough that an incorrect door was discovered. With only two days remaining before their move back into the new ticket counter and ATO space, Southwest informed us that they could not move in unless this door was replaced. Typical lead time for a task like this would be 4 to 6 weeks, at least. In lieu of delaying move-in, our team suggested to Southwest that we modify the door in the field, saving them time and money. What would have cost $2,000 or more was supplemented by

Q&D was selected as the construction manager providing program management services as well as procurement and installation of Southwest Airlines new branding signage in over 100 airports across the US. sign can be a complex process. In order to swiftly accomplish each individual installation, the layering of 6 to 10 active projects is required, including overlap in different stages of design and fabrication. Fortunately, our stakeholder collaboration skills and systems are unmatched in this regard.
