North Bend Entertainers present 'A Christmas Carol' Chester FAIRVIEW-- The last two performances of Charles Dickens “A Christmas Carol” will be presented by the North Bend Entertainers at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 30 and Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Peterson Dance Hall, 65 South State, Fairview. Visit Facebook.com/NorthBendEntertainers for more information and ticket prices. Written and directed by Jason Quinn, Mt. Pleasant, the play's cast includes children and adults from all over north Sanpete County. The play begins on a cold and bleak Christmas Eve in London, seven years after the death of Ebenezer Scrooge's business partner, Jacob Marley. Scrooge, an old miser, hates Christmas and refuses an invitation to Christmas dinner from his nephew Fred. Scrooge turns away two missionaries who seek a donation from him in order to provide food and heating for the poor, and only grudgingly allows his overworked, underpaid clerk, Bob Cratchit, Christmas day off with pay to conform to the social custom. And this is just the beginning. Jason Quinn’s version of the play takes the original story by Charles
Dickens and gives it a comedic twist. Plus, traditional Christmas songs accompanied by a string quartet accent the scenes and give an old fashioned feel to the play. Charles Dickens, as the narrator, guides the audience along while telling the story of Ebenezer Scrooge and the visits of three spirits. Still, the transformation of Scrooge is central to the story. Dickens's biographer, Claire Tomalin, sees the conversion of Scrooge as carrying the Christian message that "even the worst of sinners may repent and become a good man.” About NBE North Bend Entertainers (NBE) is a non-profit community theatre organization. MT. PLEASANT-- What started as a sunny, but cold afternoon became a cold, winter night, but throngs of people, of all ages, joined in the downtown festivities for the Mt. Pleasant City Annual Christmas Lights Festival, complete with lighting ceremony, games, food and fun on Nov. 24. Fire barrels were stationed on the street and provided a quick warm-up for those who felt the chill. Families brought their children and listened to Christmas carols sung by Mt. Pleasant Elementary students under the direction of Linda Barker. Door prizes were won by several lucky recipients. It was fun to hear the lists of winners when called out by Miss Mt. Pleasant and her attendants. Several of the downtown businesses provided games and prizes to all who participated. The hay rides were a hit and those participating enjoyed singing Christmas carols
along the way. At least 1,500 people came for the event and many of them enjoyed the free hot chocolate and cookies. In fact, over 60 gallons of hot chocolate were consumed along with 1,300 Christmas tree cookies. Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived in a police vehicle with lights and sirens wailing with a long line of eager children waiting at the gazebo guarded by Santa’s elves. At dusk, Mayor Dan Anderson led the countdown, the street lights came on and the fireworks lit up the sky. Those who came hungry had choices for food. The Sanpete Pantry was offering pulled pork meals for sale and the Youth City Council was selling hot chili and scones. One of the visitors told of how he had considered staying home, due to the cold, to watch something on the Hallmark TV channel, but then decided that it would be more fun to be in a Hallmark activity than to just watch one.

Ex-clerk of Fayette gets jail time MANTI—Tracy Kay Mellor, 63, ex-clerk of Fayette, was sentenced Nov. 21 in Sixth District Court to spend 45 days in jail and repay $153,390 in restitution that she had stolen from the small Sanpete County town of 250. Mellor admitted in court to three counts of misuse of public money, a third degree felony. She had written checks to a business, R&T Repair, owned by Mellor and her husband. Mellor had been originally charged with nine counts of misuse of public funds that had dated back almost a decade. Ultimately, she pleaded guilty to three counts as part of a plea bargain with prosecutors, due to the statute of limitations being expired on earlier allegations.
