Model of Manti’s historic Grist Mill to be unveiled Friday The unveiling of a remarkably detailed model of Manti’s Historic Grist Mill will mark the 172nd year of the Settlement of Manti/Sanpete in November 1849. The public is invited to participate in this event Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Jim Maxwell, skilled artisan and creator of the model will be in attendance from noon to 3 p.m. Maxwell has been in charge of the grist mill section of the Utah Heritage “This Is The Place” Park in Salt Lake City. For years he has had a spe-

cial interest in Manti’s grist mill, fed by the Millstream, about a half block east of Main Street on Union. The open house for the model unveiling is sponsored by the Two Josephs Foundation, recently organized in the state as a corporation with headquarters in Manti. The foundation name is in honor of two great prophets of God, Joseph of old, with the coat of many colors, and Joseph Smith Jr. to whom the Lord granted keys by which the Gospel of Jesus Christ could be re-

stored in these Latter Days. The Book of Mormon, integral to the Settlement of Manti/Sanpete, makes clear that Joseph Smith is a literal descendant of the biblical Joseph, and that he would play a pivotal role in the regathering of scattered Israel — the posterity of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob preparatory to the Second Coming. The Unveiling/ Open House at noon to 3 p.m. will be held at 21 North Main. This site has housed the Lindell Book Store, Dave’s Photo, Carpenters, and way back was a vital part of the Tuttle Hotel.

Cleo K. Cheney, left, and Cliff Cheney drove a long way to hunt down their ancestors’ histories. While visiting the Fairview Museum of History and Art they had a great time entertaining the museum staff with their own stories while sitting by the grist stone created by their great-grandfather Elam Cheney for the first grist mill in Sanpete County. An artistic journey Fairview Museum to feature the artwork of Nancy Hayes On Friday, Dec. 10, the Rotating Artist’s Gallery of the Fairview Museum will exhibit the artwork of Nancy Hayes. A reception and celebration of Nancy’s artwork in watercolor, mosaic and stained glass will be held at the museum from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on that date. The Hayes came to Sanpete County from Layton. They have lived in many beautiful towns like Cave Creek, Arizona; Missoula, Montana; Bountiful, Utah; and Chino Hills, California. Wherever they lived, Nancy sought out art classes and increased her knowledge and variety of art forms to enjoy. She moved to Sanpete County a year ago with her husband, Kim, her two dogs and a dozen chickens. They lived for the last year in their trailer while they were building their log home. It was a long year and she had to put her art on hold and the end result was a traditional Scandinavian log home. Nancy has been taught by Lester Lee, Beth Arbuckle Ashdown, Michelle Walton and many other talented teachers over the years. She now enjoys expanding her art by teaching others to have confidence in exploring their own special talents. Nancy started out painting in her early 20s with tole painting. It gave her a chance to make a little money while raising two daughters. Over the years she gave away most of that work, but she still has a few choice pieces she has kept. While growing up, her mother taught her to sew. She has always enjoyed the fabric arts such as quilts, wool applique and clothing. A memorable trip to Israel 12 years ago was highlighted by 2 special quilt blocks that she had seen. Many of her pictures from that trip have those blocks in them. Her love of watercolor art has always been around. While living in Bountiful, she found an art class at the local high school. She had the wonderful opportunity to learn under the amazing direction of Lester Lee. When she reached the age of “retirement” she started to paint at the senior center with a talented group of artists led by Beth Ashdown. Watercolor is her favorite medium but enjoys oil and acrylics. She has explored photog-

Gunnison hosts ‘A Kurt Bestor Christmas’ on Dec. 20 GUNNISON — Emmy Award-winning, Utah-based composer and performer, Kurt Bestor, returns to Gunnison’s historic Casino Star Theatre with the popular “A Kurt Bestor Christmas: Return to the Magic” on Monday, Dec. 20 at 4 and 7:30 p.m. Utah’s “Mr. Christmas” is best known for his annual holiday concerts performed for Utah audiences for the past 34 years and his popular anthem “Prayer of the Children” which is still one of the most-sung choir songs in the world. It was recently covered by “American Idol” finalist David Archuleta and the iconic rock group Three Dog Night. Kurt Bestor, a graduate of Orem High School, launched his career writing music for television and movies beginning in the 1980s. “I knew that’s what I wanted to do when I saw ‘Jaws’ during high school,” says Bestor. “I made it a goal to score films from that moment.” His credits include more than 40 feature film scores, more than 40 themes for national TV programs, and numerous commercial underscores.

Stained glass has always caught her attention and so several years ago she embarked in more classes to learn this beautiful art. When you work with glass you end up with buckets of extra glass and so it just made sense to bring another passion out in mosaics. She enjoys the challenge of finding the right wood tray or plate and creating a master piece from scraps.

Art has always been a major part of Nancy’s life. Now that the Hayes are finally settled in the beautiful Sanpete valley, she will have more time to create and share art. This is an excellent and inspiring display. The museum staff invites visitors and Sanpete County residents to take time and see Nancy Hayes’ show. The museum is located at 55 N. 100 East in Fairview. The exhibit will be up until Saturday, Feb. 26, 2022.

COVID vaccinations available throughout region BY GLORIA ALBRECHT

The Pyramid

Central Utah Public Health is continuing their effort to offer COVID vaccinations to all who qualify. On Nov. 16, vaccines were being administered by the CUPH staff at the Mt. Pleasant fire station, and just before the station opened its doors to the public at 2 p.m. cars were lined up on Main Street to enter the fire station drive-thru vaccination site. At the Mt Pleasant fire station, Jennifer Lamb of the Central Utah Public Health Department reported that vaccines were available for everyone 5 years of age and up, regardless of their current vaccination status. So, first-time vaccines, second vaccines, vaccine booster shots and Pfizer vaccines for kids were all being administered at the Mt. Pleasant fire station drive-thru clinic. The Mt. Pleasant site is open every Tuesday from 2 p.m. until they complete the vaccination of those who registered. Children 5 to 17 years old can only receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. You can visit http://vaccinefinder.org to find a location that offers the Pfizer vaccine. The state also has information on vaccines for kids ages 5 to 17 at http://coronavirus.utah.gov/vaccine/distribution, with links to vaccination sites and health care providers for all ages. y research shows that Manila in the Philippines is the highest density city in the world – 119,600 persons per square mile. By contrast, Sanpete has 17.9 people per square mile. Utah has 35.8. Occasionally, I like to remind myself of what it’s like to be a Sanpeter in the big picture of the world. The long and the short of the arithmetic of being a Sanpeter is that we’re just a “drop in the bucket.” This isn’t a news flash, but it’s worth contemplating once in a while. According to the Census Bureau information I looked at, Sanpete is estimated to be at around the 28,437. The state of Utah’s estimated population is 3,271,616. That means that Sanpete comprises less than 1% (0.009%) of the state’s population. One out of every 115 Utahns is a Sanpeter. Sanpete has 1,588.11 square miles. Utah has 82,143.65 square miles. Therefore, Sanpete’s area is nearly 2% of the state. By the way, for your information, Rhode Island is smaller geographically than Sanpete County at 1,044.93 square miles. (Rhode Islanders have 906 people per square mile) Another “by the way:” Sanpete is more than 80% the size of Delaware. Well, this information is all well and good and interesting. (Okay, maybe it’s just all well and good.) But why is it significant? What difference does it make? The same kinds of statistics and comparisons could be brought up by several other counties in Utah. Box Elder County and Tooele County are gigantic geographically. But for our purposes here, those places don’t matter. Let some other two-bit columnist in those areas make hay out of their own statistics. My point is that it’s special to be a Sanpeter. They talk about the Marines being “the few, the proud.” I’m here to say that Sanpeters are fewer and perhaps prouder. (At approximately 182,000 active duty Marines, Sanpeters are definitely fewer.) Some years back, I saw Lee Greenwood perform in his theater (now a church) in Sevierville, Tennessee. In his trademark song, which many of us are familiar with, the lyrics are, “I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free.” I believe that Sanpeters are proud to be Americans and proud to be free and living in Sanpete. This week we celebrate Thanksgiving in this country. I feel that this holiday should be, and in fact is, special for the residents of Sanpete County. For one thing, our county is synonymous with turkeys and turkeys are synonymous with Thanksgiving. We had a terrific “Pre-Thanksgiving” family gathering at our place this past weekend. It’s an “off year” for part of the family. You know how

sometimes family members do alternating years with one side of the family or another? On Saturday, we all took our bicycles out by Gunnison Reservoir and did some family cycling on the new mountain bike race course. It was a ton of fun. You may have heard that more than 3,000 volunteer hours were put into the creation of the course. Last month more than 800 high school riders broke in the new race course for the final south region race of the season. More than 3,000 spectators showed up for that event. It’s really phenomenal to think of that many people gathering out there. My wife put together a big dinner on Sunday. A Norbest “Sweetheart” turkey roast, honey baked ham and all the traditional add-ons were on the menu. For me (at least in my mind), she prepared vinegary/sweet “Harvard beets,” marshmallowy candied yams and a cherry pie. I’m looking forward to Thanksgiving again this week. I’m glad to see that Thanksgiving is becoming more accepted as a twoday holiday. It’s always seemed silly to me to have a Thursday holiday that emphasizes the gathering of families and then expect workers to happily be back on the job on Friday. In this day and age, families often don’t live around the corner from one another. The gathering of families is the reason that Thanksgiving is the heaviest travel period of the entire year Sanpeters are Thanksgiving people. We’re grateful for our blessings. Some families have a tradition of going around the table at Thanksgiving dinner and expressing thanks for particular blessings. If that happens at your table and you don’t know what you’re going to say, let me give you a few of my own “thankful fors.” Feel free to use them. I don’t want you to be caught off guard. Living in Sanpete, I’m thankful for: 1) being able to cut my own Christmas tree (if I choose to), 2) clear skies and bright stars viewed from my own yard, 3) being able to support a local business when buying turkey, 4) being able to not have to worry about getting rich and have the hassle of protecting lots of assets, 5) knowing that if things get tight and I need to put meat on the table, I can get venison on the hoof in my own back yard, 6) knowing that if I get caught doing No. 5 above and have to be put in the pokey, we have a nice modern jail with plenty of room. It’s great to be part of the “spit in the ocean” of Sanpete. I’m thankful to be able to live here. I hope you are too. (And if you’re a reader who doesn’t live in Sanpete — we think we know where your heart might be) — Merrill

To ensure leftovers won’t be forgotten or tossed, have a plan for their use in advance. For recipes and inspiration, check out these Thanksgiving leftover ideas. Included are recipes for turkey, pumpkin, sweet potatoes/yams, cranberries, and mashed potatoes. Enjoy more time with your love ones by simplifying your prep time using alternative recipes or cooking methods. Also involve your loved ones in the preparation. Time spent together in the kitchen can provide an opportunity for bonding and making happy memories.

Each Christmas season, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints invites its members and friends to Light the World. This week, the church launched its annual Light the World Christmas initiative in an effort to “Light the World with Love,” which is this year’s theme. In order to share the love this Christmas, the church has provided several online guides to make this season one of giving, sharing and of love. Daily initiatives have been planned for both adults and children, along with a special coloring page for children. The calendars of daily service ideas begin on Nov. 30 and run through Christmas Day. The printable calendars and other ideas can be downloaded on the Light The World website. “Jesus Christ is the light of

the world,” said Elder Marcus B. Nash, a General Authority Seventy, in a press release. “Those who follow Him live with light, joy and hope — even in dark times (John 8:12). As we remember His birth this Christmas season, let us also remember His exemplary life and the things He taught us.” A new video of a modern Nativity is featured on the Light The World site. The video promotes the belief that normal people doing normal service can be the star, the shepherds and the wise men and women for Jesus in the modern world. “We can hold up His light by doing what He did: to love God and love our neighbor by lifting up those who are down, helping fulfill the needs of those in want, and comforting those who hurt,” Nash added. “Doing this will cause His light to shine in and through us and will bring light and peace to our troubled world one person at a time. We invite everyone—everywhere — to join us in celebrating His birth and to Light the World with Love.” In addition, the Light the World Giving Machines are back this year in 10 cities across the United States, allowing people to donate to dozens of local and global charitable organizations during the holiday season. The Giving Machine at University Place in Orem will be available beginning Nov. 24. A special unveiling of the machines will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 23.
