MT. PLEASANT-- Several buildings in the downtown area of Mt. Pleasant have recently been painted, beautified and improved thanks to painter Scott Griffin and grant funding from the Utah Division of State History, Mormon Pioneer National Heritage Area and matching funds provided by the respective building owners. In addition to painting, Griffin and General Contractor William Burgoyne will begin remodeling the interiors of the railroad boxcars next to the now open Coffee Depot on the south end of town. Griffin is an experienced painter, artist and sculptor. He began painting at the early age of 13. He received an art degree from what is now known as Dixie State University, St. George; and learned how to do hand lettering from Ralph Huddlestone while attending Salt Lake Technical College, which is now known as Salt Lake Community College. Currently paintings and a sculpture Griffin created are on display in the Phillips Gallery, Salt Lake City. Eventually his art will be on display locally. His sculptures are created out of reclaimed and recycled items. He takes old stuff and makes them new. See IMPROVED, PAGE 9

sets date to appoint interim mayor CHERYL K. BREWER

The Pyramid

MT. PLEASANT-- The main focus of the Sept 25 city council meeting had originally been to fill the mayor’s seat after the resignation of Mayor Sandra Bigler. However, that appointment had to be pushed to Oct. 9, due to the fact the city had not properly advertised the position. Instead an amended agenda was approved to extend Dan Anderson in the position of mayor pro tempore. Several citizens came forward during the public participation portion of the meeting. McKade Lusk said he cares about the community but is concerned about the process that Paul Madsen was hired. He questioned who hired him, what process did Madsen go through, what is his job title, what responsibility does he have and what power does he have? He also asked why the position was not posted. Lusk also said that posting the position would have saved so much controversy and turning into a circus. He said so much could be resolved if kept in the public eye instead of making the city a laughing stock. He asked the council to do better because it starts and ends with the council. Councilman Kevin Stallings said the city was in an emergency situation and because of that, Madsen’s position didn’t need to be advertised. Stallings said much of the work needed was not done such as road patching and sewer cleaning. He said that work hadn’t been done because of crews being called out to fires in the state. Madsen is called a temporary coordinator, who will be assisting all departments. Stallings thought Madsen would be working until next spring Stallings also noted that a new material is being used to patch roads that can be stockpiled and doesn’t lose effectiveness. Stallings also said crews have been working on Fridays to patch roads. Road crossings and sewer cleaning are being done by outside contractors, but work is progressing. Another item brought forward was the water deficiencies. Councilman Stallings said the city is currently losing 50 percent of the water into the irrigation system. The city is planning to reclaim the water and also received approval to test a well that would be shared with the owner. See APPOINT, PAGE 10
