Company scores perfect safety record Barclay Mechanical received a Perfect Safety Record Award for year 2020 from the Utah Safety Council. Barclay was one of 29 companies in Utah who received this award based on zero recordable OSHA injuries, illnesses or days away from work. “I don’t think everyone realizes how proud we are of our men when we have a zero-recordable-injury year,” said Ken Barclay coowner of Barclay Mechanical. “Our line of work is among the most dangerous and it takes consistent diligence to safety protocols to keep our men safe.” Barclay Mechanical was first recognized for its perfect safety record at the Utah Safety Council’s annual meeting and awards ceremony that was held virtually Aug. 13. Owner Ken Barclay and Senior Field Superintendent Russell Sanders went to the Utah Safety Council office in Salt Lake City a few weeks later to pick up their physical award and take a photo op. Companies that are required to adhere to OSHA standards and training are eligible to be considered for the perfect safety award. That would include the construction industry, processing industry, health care industry and more. Barclay Mechanical co-owner John Barclay explains that he feels extremely honored to be part of the perfect-record safety list because of the high potential for accidents to happen in their industry. He stated that his welders work with heat around 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit each day, work with acid or fragments that could get into the eye, weld from an anchor suspension system, or weld in refineries with potentially flammable gases. Barclay Mechanical hasn’t had a recordable OSHA injury for 3 years. They are extremely proud of this strong safety record. “Our goal at Barclay Mechanical is to send our men home to the family they live and work COURTESY PHOTO for in the first place,” said Scott Barclay Co- Ken Barclay, chief operating officer and co-owner at Barclay Mechanical; Lisa Christofferson, owner of Barclay Mechanical. “We don’t slack member manager at Utah Safety Council; Russell Sanders, senior field superintendent at Barclay Mechanical. on safety at Barclay Mechanical.”
REDISTRICTING UTAH
Map drawing tool available for Utahns to use SALT LAKE CITY — The redistricting software is now available for Utahns to draw maps to submit to the Legislative Redistricting Committee. Utahns may submit map suggestions for Utah’s Congressional, legislative and school board districts. The Legislative Redistricting Committee is currently holding a public hearing to review how to use
the map drawing software. A representative from Esri, the company that produced the software, is at the meeting to answer questions and give a tutorial. The committee also produced an FAQ guide on how to use the software. Utahns can draw and submit maps for: Congressional districts.
State Senate districts. State House of Representatives districts. State Board of Education districts. Participants do not need to submit maps for each category but do need to submit complete maps with the appropriate number of districts. In addition to drawing maps,
Utahns are encouraged to attend a public hearing to explain their map and share feedback. The committee will be visiting various locations around the state starting next week to hear directly from Utahns. Learn more about the redistricting process and draw and submit a map at http://redistricting.utah. gov/maps.

Ephraim student earns Weber State achievement OGDEN — Danielle Smith of Ephraim earned the honor of Academic Excellence from Weber State University. More than 800 students received the honor of Academic Excellence in the summer, signifying they maintained a GPA of at least 3.5. Of those 800, approximately 280 students earned the distinction of High Academic Excellence for maintaining a 4.0 GPA. The achievement of earning Academic Excellence is difficult under normal circumstances but was made especially challenging with the added pressure of handling the mental and emotional impact of a global pandemic, political unrest and an unusual learning environment. Less face-to-face instruction and interaction, as well as limited engagement with peers, meant students had to demonstrate their grit and determination to maintain their high academic standards. Additionally, many students maintained exceptional academic standards while also managing jobs, extracurricular activities, families and household responsibilities. Visit weber.edu/wsu today for more news about Weber State University. Weber State is an open-admission institution, serving more than 29,000 students from some of the most ethnically and economically diverse cities in Utah. The university cultivates remarkably personalized teaching, mentoring and engaged learning with seven colleges, 225 undergraduate certificate and degree programs and 16 graduate degrees, including a Doctor of Nursing Practice. Weber State’s 16 teams compete in NCAA Division I athletics as part of the Big Sky Conference. In addition to being a learning institution, the university is a community leader. Weber State makes Utah a better place to live through community building, volunteer service and economic development.
