New water conservation goals established, state seeks input SALT LAKE CITY — Utah State is seeking public input on newly established regional goals for municipal and industrial (M&I) water conservation. M&I includes residential, commercial, institutional (for example, schools and parks), and industrial water use, and excludes agriculture, mining and power generation. Everyone is encouraged to view the new water conservation goals and submit online comment now through Sept. 25 at https://water.utah.gov/regional-conservation-goals/. This is the first time Utah’s water conservation goals have been established on a regional level, an approach which was recommended by the 2015 Legislative Audit, 2017 Follow-up Audit, Third-Party Review and 2017

Recommended State Water Strategy. “A regional approach allows the goals to be tailored for nine different regions around the state and takes into account climate, elevation, and each region’s characteristics and needs,” Division of Water Resources Deputy Director Todd Adams said. “Given Utah’s diverse geography, establishing region-specific goals makes sense.” Utah’s previous statewide conservation goal was reducing per-capita use 25 percent by 2025. “We’ve made significant progress thanks to the water wise efforts of many Utahns and water managers,” Division of Water Resources Assistant Director Candice Hasenyager said. “There is still more to be done,

and these new regional goals are the next step. Accomplishing these goals will require everyone’s participation, including water managers, elected officials, state and local leaders, and the public.” To formulate the new water conservation goals, the Division of Water Resources first gathered public input. Last fall, over 1,650 people participated in a water conservation survey, and eight open houses across the state were held. After public input was tallied, a team consisting of water providers, members from the Governor’s Office of Management and Budget, and Water Resources staff worked with a third-party Please see WATER, Page A4

Father, son duo highlighted at Fairview museum FAIRVIEW — The talented father and son team of James and Eric Heywood, both Moroni, wowed visitors at their open house Aug. 23 at the Fairview Museum of History & Art. While James concentrates on realistic photography, some so perfect that viewers think they are a part of the scene, Eric chose oil painting, in a very unique style. Eric’s paintings are mostly variations of only five colors from cobalt blue to red, yet he accomplishes amazing landscapes somewhat in

the style of the Impressionists. He studies much of the time in Florence, Italy, where he observed that Italian impressionists emerged about the same time as the French/ Dutch, but didn’t get the publicity or credit due them. So come and visit Fairview’s gem of a museum and explore the works of both artists. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., staffed by volunteers. Donations help keep the museum open.

FFA T-shirt fundraiser in progress at TSC BRENTWOOD, TN — The fifth annual FFA Convention t-shirt fundraiser launched recently in Tractor Supply Company (TSC) stores nationwide. For a limited time only, Tractor Supply customers can purchase a limited edition FFA Convention themed long sleeve t-shirt to celebrate the 92nd National FFA Convention & Expo, which takes place later this fall. Net proceeds from t-shirt sales will go directly to the National FFA Foundation and will be used to fund programs and activities for FFA chapters across the country. The limited-edition t-shirt has the official FFA Convention & Expo logo printed across the front, which consists of hexagonal molecules and gold rows. The molecules represent the innovative side of FFA, and the gold rows represent crops – serving as a tip of the hat to traditional agriculture. Customers can purchase the shirt now at any Tractor Supply store. The shirt will also be available to purchase online with an in-store pickup. “Tractor Supply looks forward to holding the annual FFA Convention t-shirt fundraiser because it spotlights the future leaders of our country who are making their mark on the agriculture industry,” said Christi Korzekwa, senior vice president of marketing at Tractor Supply. “Our customers and team members are inspired by FFA’s vision to develop leaders, build communities and strengthen agriculture,” she said, “and this annual fundraiser provides an opportunity for them to continue investing in causes they care about.” Funds raised this year will benefit three FFA programs: Gift of Gold, Living to Serve and Alumni Legacy Grants. This year is the debut year

for Gift of Gold, a program that awards grants to chapters devastated by natural disasters. Living to Serve is a program that empowers students to positively impact their communities through leadership opportunities, and the Alumni Legacy Grants enable local chapters to help local high schools build or strengthen their alumni chapters. In 2018, this t-shirt fundraiser generated more than $340,000 for chapters nationwide through the Living to Serve and Alumni Legacy grants. Since the start of this fundraiser, Tractor Supply has raised a total of $1.1M for FFA programs. In addition to being sold in Tractor Supply stores, the shirts will be available at the 92nd National FFA Convention & Expo, to be held Oct. 30 — Nov. 2 in Indianapolis, IN. The event is one of the world’s largest student conventions – with nearly 70,000 attendees and more than 400 exhibiting companies – that brings FFA members together to inspire their peers and celebrate their many accomplishments.
