UTAH DWR — Updated fishing reports from around the area provided by Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) are as follows: Benches Pond Fishing is good at Benches Pond, especially early in the morning or later in the evening. Try using worms, PowerBait or spinners for catching these. Garlic PowerBait has worked especially well. Tributaries to Benches Pond are now fishable. Boulger Reservoir Fishing has been good at Boulger Reservoir. This lake is frequently stocked with catchable sized rainbow trout from May to October, and also contains some naturally occurring cutthroat trout. Both bait and lure/fly fishing are effective methods used here. Cleveland Reservoir The reservoir is accessible, full and spilling. Water temp. 51-55 degrees. Visibility is about 5’-6’. The fishing has been slow. Electric Lake The reservoir is full and spilling. Currently murky conditions. Kokanee Salmon, cutthroat and decent tiger trout. Shore access is limited to the north end and the south end near the dam. The concrete boat ramp located on the north end of the lake is accessible. Please see FISHING, Page A6

Forest travel report for Manti-La Sal NF USFS — U.S. Forest Service-Manti-La Sal National Forest has reported travel restrictions and road openings for various roads in the forest. According to their report, the 12-Mile Canyon road is now open to about a mile above the junction with the 6-Mile road. At that point a large drift still prevents access to 12-Mile Campground. The Ephraim to Orangeville road is now open. Sanpete County road crews pushed through the drifts on top, but passenger car use is still not advised.

The Ferron Canyon road is open to the campground and Indian Creek Guard Station. The road over the top is still snowed in. The Ferron Campground is open to the public and is expected it to have drinking water by July 4. The South side of Ferron Road is open to Spinners Reservoir. The Pinchot trail in 12-Mile Canyon east of Mayfield has a large washout in the lower 2.7 mile portion and is temporarily closed for public safety. It will be opened back up after repairs have been done.

This week Sanpete County celebrates America’s freedoms and Independence Day July 4th with events, activities and fun.

Celebrate America’s Independence SANPETE COUNTY — This July 4th it’s time to celebrate America’s freedom. In 1776, American colonists announced to King George their independence from British rule. The Revolutionary War was fought and America won. Wars have since been fought and lives lost in order to safeguard the many freedoms enjoyed in this country. Take time to check out the “honor rolls” in the parks and legion halls of the county. Take a walk through any Sanpete cemetery. Those who do will see the names of those who served and died in the quest for freedom. Many Sanpete citizens have taken part in the defense of liberty and continue to do so. Soldiers from this area have been on deployments in the past and others are scheduled for later. Quite a few years ago there was a movement to show support for the troops by wearing red on Fridays. Perhaps even now there are those who still do. Perhaps it’s a neighbor that does the same thing. The acronym RED in that case stood for “Remember Everyone

Deployed” – therefore the color red became symbolic. Red, of course, is symbolic in other ways including red being the color of blood. This “Red Friday” thing can make the personal clothing choice easier for at least one day of the week. One of the freedoms held onto here in America, which is aggressively defended, is freedom of speech. During summer travels, this freedom has been exercised by people who traveled into Sanpete County, many from out of state, to speak their minds on the street by the temple grounds during the Mormon Miracle Pageant. Those who attended the pageant may have noticed the commentary by those who have taken the opportunity to use their free speech. Most, if not all, of those speaking loudly, came there to speak out in Please see CELEBRATE, Page AA6
