Niels Hansen, both were millers at the mill. She kept ownership of the property of the mill where the foundation is still standing because it was a special place for her. The Stone Monument was dedicated by Robert Hansen at the location at the junction of The Big Spring Road and the Loop Road north west of Fountain Green. The Public is welcome to visit the Old Flour Mill Monument to see the foundation of the mill and also notice the old railroad berm and the adobe yard close by. T
his weekend we celebrate America’s freedom. In 1776, the American colonists announced to King George their independence from British rule. The revolutionary war was fought. America won and here we are. Wars have since been fought and lives lost in order to safeguard the freedoms which we enjoy in this country. Check out the “honor rolls” in the parks and legion halls of the county. Take a walk through any Sanpete cemetery. You’ll see names of those who served and MERRILL died. OGDEN Sanpeters have taken part in the defense of liberty and continue to do so. Our soldiers from the area have been on deployments in the past and remain “at the ready.” Quite a few years ago I heard about a movement to show support for our troops by wearing red on Fridays. I’ve been doing that for a long time now. I know that there are others around who do the same thing. The acronym R.E.D. in this case stands for “Remember Everyone Deployed” – therefore the color red becomes symbolic. Red, of course, is symbolic in other ways including red being the color of blood. This “Red Friday” thing has made my clothing choice easier for at least one day of the week. Besides remembering our precious freedom, Independence Day is a time to celebrate and have fun. I’ve compiled a short list for your use in enjoying the upcoming holiday. Here’s my list of things to do to celebrate this weekend. 1) Take part in the local celebrations. If you aren’t helping, be a supporter by attending the parades, breakfasts, dinners, etc. Spend a little time and money. It will make you feel good.
Fountain Green Lamb Days Royalty left to right Madllyn Mangum 1st Attendant, Lexi Bradley Queen, and Jianna Smith 2nd Attendant show here in the new Fountain Green Fire Station were on hand to help with tours of the new city facility. Last Friday evening, the northern Sanpete city of Fountain Green offic cially opened its all-new City Hall, Fire Station and Library with an open house free to the public. The recently completed building is located at 375 N. State. The building was completed on May 11 and has been functioning as the new City Hall since that date. Along with city offices, it contains a large council room that can quickly be converted into a multipurpose room by sliding curtains in front of the rostrum. This room also includes a large kitchen area for food preparation and would make the perfect place for a family or city event. In the basement there is now a fully functional library and other
meeting rooms that can be used by the community and city. The south end of the building now houses the fire trucks for the city, including equipment rooms, bathrooms and showers for the firemen. The cost of construction for the new building was $3.4 million dollars, but has been estimated to be more than double that at today’s prices. Free hot dogs and chips were available for all that attended along with demonstrations form the Utah Highway Patrol and Utah Fire Safety folks. This year’s Lamb Days Royalty consisting of Madllyn Mangum Queen, Lexi Bradly 1st attendant and Jianna Smith 2nd attendant were there helping with tours of the new fire station and other duties as the public toured through the facilities.
Fountain Green has a new library located in the basement of the new City Hall building that was completed on May 11, a public open house was held on June 25 allowing all to tour the entire facility. The library held hourly give-aways during the event.
