U.S. FOREST SERVICE PHOTOS
Manti-La Sal National Forest recreation crews found several bags of trash left behind at Joes Valley campground. Had the crew not found the trash, animals would have gotten into it and left an even bigger mess behind. Visitors are reminded to remove all trash when they are done camping.
US Forest Service encourages visitors to ‘Pack it in, Pack it out’ PRICE — Officials with the Manti-La Sal National Forest are noticing an increase of visitors to the forest, and with that, a lack of respect for forest etiquette. “We are already seeing a number of trash bags and litter left behind from campers,” said Darren Olsen, acting Forest Supervisor. “Please take all your garbage back home with you. The Forest does not have dumpsters or trash collectors at most campgrounds or recreating areas, so please practice ‘Pack it in, Pack it Out’.” “Pack it in, Pack it out” is a simple yet effective way to remind visitors to take their trash home with them. If it is brought onto the forest, it should leave the Forest. Visitors are reminded that burning trash is not an acceptable form of removal. Olsen also said that moun-
tain roads should be driven with caution, especially with current road conditions varying between clear, muddy and snow covered. “Don’t speed” he said. “Speeds should be much slower on mountain roads due to numerous blind corners, vehicles hauling campers and trailers, and people looking off at the views, etc. Slow down and enjoy the drive through the mountains.” Recreation staff want to encourage visitors to have a great visit to the Manti-La Sal, but ask you keep these key rules in mind: Visitors must move their campsite at least 10 miles after 14 days and must stay the first night they establish a campsite. Campsites and equipment may not be left unattended for more than 72 hours. Officials will leave notices on unattended equipment explaining this rule, and documenting when the notice was left to keep track of how long equipment sits unattended. Do not leave fires unattended. As Smokey Bear says, if it’s too
Fountain Green Elementary History Fair was held May 6, 2021. 5th and 6th grade students. Theme was ”Communication”.
Officials with Manti-La Sal National Forest are noticing as the weather gets warmer, and people start visiting the forest, trash is continuously being left behind. “Pack it in, Pack it out” is a simple yet effective way to remind visitors to take their trash home with them. If it is brought onto the Forest, it should leave the forest. hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave the fire alone. Soak the coals with water, stir and repeat until the fire and coals are fully extinguished. Please do not feed wildlife. This can create a dangerous situation for both visitors and animals. Cutting and hauling firewood off the Forest requires a permit, and the permit stipulates people can only drive 150 feet off the road to collect firewood.
The forest offers a variety of fun, family-friendly activities, but only when everyone is respectful of the rules in place. These rules help protect the public lands, while ensuring a safe visit for all. Spring City sponsoring cornhole DWR marks 20 years of community fishing ponds tournament BY CONNOR RICHARDS
The Pyramid
Six-year-old Remy Lightfoot lifts off his navy blue cap and squints into the late-afternoon sunlight before casting his fishing rod into the quiet water of the pond at Wayne Bartholomew Park in Springville. It’s Remy’s first time fishing, and he’s already caught a medium-sized fish with shiny scales that he can’t identify. He’s here on Wednesday afternoon with his 13-year-old brother, Julian, and his grandfather, Larry Orton.
Remy, a Salt Lake City resident who informs the Daily Herald that he is actually 6½, sees a fish circling around his fishing line. Remy gets excited and, before the fish gets a chance to bite, he rapidly reels in his line. Not ready to give up just yet, the angler in training walks over to Grandpa and gets another piece of cheese to use as bait. Remy’s first time fishing took place as the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is celebrating 20 years of its community fishing pond program, which launched in 2001 with roughly a dozen public fishing ponds across the state.
Two decades later, there are now 57 DWR-operated ponds throughout Utah, including the pond in Springville, and “dozens of thriving fishing clubs and angler education programs in the communities,” the agency said in a press release on Tuesday. Other community fishing ponds in Utah County include the Highland Glen Park Pond and Manila Creek Park Pond in north Utah County, Vivian Park Pond in Provo Canyon and Canyon View Park Pond, Salem Pond and Please see FISHING, Page A2
