EPHRAIM — A special Saturday matinee showing of the movie “Five Feet Apart” will be shown on Saturday, April 13, at 3:15 p.m., at the South Towne Theatre, 687 South Main, Ephraim; to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. All community members are encouraged to come watch the movie, get a glimpse into the lives of those living with this disease and participate in an event to benefit not only Jenny Carmody Livingston, but the 30,000 other people living with CF in the United States. Human touch is one of the most basic and fundamental forms of human connection. People use touch to convey a range of emotions including happiness, fear, affection, consolation and more. According to Stella Grant, one of the main characters in the major motion picture Five Feet Apart, “we need that touch from the one we love almost as much as we need air to breathe.” So, what happens when a person is not allowed to touch the person they love? This is the question asked in Five Feet Apart, a movie about teenagers

Jenny Carmody Livingston, Manti, (on left) suffers from cystic fibrosis (CF). She and her family encourage everyone to support the special matinee showing of the major motion picture “Five Feet Apart” at 3:15 p.m., Saturday, April 13, at the South Towne Theatre, 687 South Main, Ephraim. Viewers will support a good cause and understand the problems of CF. Jenny Livingston, Manti, and her

sisters were born with cystic fibrosis (CF), a genetic disease that causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the body. This mucus acts like tar, coating the internal organs and preventing them from working properly. This leads to chronic lung infections, digestive issues, pancreatic insufficiency, CF related diabetes, and more. Eventually, CF leads to organ failure and death. Jenny’s oldest sister, Shannan, passed away at the age of 14, while awaiting a double lung transplant. A diagnosis of cystic fibrosis means a shortened lifetime full of hospital stays, doctor’s appointments, pills, and respiratory treatments. A somewhat less-known fact about CF is that people with the disease can spread very hazardous strains of bacteria to one another. Because of this, there is a “six-foot rule” that most people with CF live by: maintain six feet of distance, no hugging and no touching of any kind. This rule even applies to siblings with cystic fibrosis. When Jenny and her sisters were young, the dangers of cross infection Please see MOVIE, Page A8
