Development names new construction team EPHRAIM — Sagebrush Homes at Ephraim Crossing, a single-family community of 50 home sites, has appointed a new construction team to manage and construct its homes. Ephraimbased Todd Alder Construction is now managing the construction of homes in the community, with four currently under construction and more scheduled to begin by the end of March.

“Like every homebuilder in the country, we experienced challenges in our construction process. From delays due to unavailable materials to the impacts of a country-wide labor shortage, homebuilding has had to adjust in order to continue building,” said Rob Peccole, president of Sagebrush Homes. “While these challenges don’t change the value of the homes, they do affect the time it takes to build them. With strong local partners, we are now in a much better position to continue building these muchneeded homes in Ephraim.”

DRAPER — The Utah Army National Guard was set to welcome its new assistant adjutant general during the change-of-command ceremony scheduled to occur March 13 in the Draper headquarters’ auditorium.

During the c e r e m o n y , Green Brig. Gen. Tyler B. Smith will relinquish the role of assistant adjutant general of the Utah Army National Guard to Col. (promotable) Joseph W. Green. Prior to the change of command, Green will be promoted to the rank of brigadier general.

Green, an American Fork resident, has served as the chief of staff for the Utah Army National Guard since Aug. 2019. Prior to this assignment, Green served as the commander of the 300th Military Intelligence Brigade (Linguist). All building and fabrication at Sagebrush Homes is now being done locally in Utah.

All 50 homes in the community are projected to be completed within two years, with home sales currently underway and being managed by Ephraim native Tiffany Alder. Construction financing was completed by Casey Dyreng of State Bank of Southern Utah and home loans are being facilitated by Kristofer Jorgensen of Security National Mortgage Company’s Ephraim office. Title services are being offered through Central Utah Title.

“There’s no question that

there is a huge housing shortage in Sanpete County and Central Utah,” said Dyreng.

“We have more jobs here than we’ve ever had, due in part to people working from home, but also new manufacturing companies. Our labor force just hasn’t kept up, and a big reason why is we don’t have adequate housing.”

Dyreng said Sagebrush Homes is providing needed housing in Ephraim. “The project is much needed and we need selection for our buyers. It empowers them as we get a bigger selection of homes,” he said. “I also found the developers very honest and forthright. They are not afraid to ask questions and get input. They have been

great partners and are providing much needed services for Sanpete County.”

Dyreng also pointed to community improvements that have come about as a result of the overall Ephraim Crossing development. “The overall plan with Ephraim Crossing involves a stop light and a road to Ephraim Canyon,” he said. “Right now, that road is a bit of a mess and goes through neighborhoods and school areas. The development will bring more of a straight shot to Ephraim Canyon and the Manti-La Sal National Forest. It’s notable that the developers are committed to make improvements in the city that make Ephraim a better place.”

Chantel “Bug” Truitt 1987 – 2022

Paul Ray Davey 1961 – 2022

Paul Ray Davey, 60 Mt. Pleasant, UT, passed away March 7, 2022, in San Antonio, TX surrounded by his family. Born July 9, 1961, to Ann & Dwain Christensen in Sonora, CA. Paul loved fishing, camping, and spending time with his family. He loved everyone’s kids and treated them as one of his own. Paul had a great sense of humor and was always teasing. No matter what life threw at him he had a positive attitude.

One of his favorite jobs was working in Alaska for GSI on the vibe opt crew.

He also worked with his dad as a carpenter. In his later life, he worked as a

handyman and could fix anything and would help anyone in need. Anyone that knew him loved him, he will be greatly missed.

Survived by his children, Katie Davey (Aaron Weyant), Kellie Davey; Dwain (Allison) Davey, Josh Davey, Kolbe Davey; grandkids, Jade & Morgan Weyant; Tyann & Nevaeh Mann; Keira & Paul Davey; siblings, Karen (Ron) Sorensen; nieces, Laurie (Steven) Moser; Jamie Bruno; Brian (Chantel) Truitt. Preceded in death by his parents; son Nicholas Davey.

Chantel “Bug” Truitt, 34 of Fountain Green, Utah passed away February 27, 2022, at home surrounded by her family. Born June 1, 1987 to Steven Winn & Alison “Ally” Rasmussen Tucker in Nephi, Utah.

Married Brian Truitt November 13, 2010 in Mt. Pleasant, Utah. They have one beautiful daughter Isabelle “Belle” Alison Truitt.

Chantel typically spent her time reading cookbooks, creating meals for her family. She went out of her way to make every family gathering special.

She loved gardening in the outdoors with her husband, daughter and her dumb dog Rosko.

Chantel knew how to turn our house into a home, decorate it and make it a warm and loving place.

She always looked forward to the football season, watching her Green Bay Packers, a true Cheesehead

at heart just like her Dad. Chantel always took time to celebrate other people’s achievements and make them feel accomplished/ loved.

Chantel is survived by her husband Brian; daughter Belle; mother Ally Tucker; siblings Anthony Tucker; Dustin (Amy) Tucker, Whitney Tucker (Jeramia Chadwick).

Preceded in death by her father Steven Tucker.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 7, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. in the Fountain Green Chapel (151 S 200 W). Viewings were held Sunday, March 6, 2022, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Monday from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. prior to services at the church.

Earl William Sorensen 1933 – 2022

Earl William Sorensen, 88 of Chester, Utah. Born November 30, 1933, passed away March 9, 2022. Earl was born on a cold day just before noon in Spring City at the family home. He grew up with 4 brothers and 3 sisters.

As a young man, he grew up milking cows by hand, herding sheep, and cutting wood for the wood-burning stove in the home. As soon as Earl was old enough to pack a gun, he went hunting with his Stevens 30-30 rifle which was given to him by his brother Perry.

Earl enjoyed school and excelled in woodshop. He met the love of his life Francis Joan Allred and they were married for time and

Earl started his working career at Kennecott Copper Mine, then they moved back to the Sanpete Valley and began milking cows, taking care of a flock of turkeys, and other farm work. In 1967 Earl bought his own dairy farm.

He milked cows for 45 years, then sold the cows and went to work tending turkeys.

Later he became a custodian for a time at Moroni Elementary School.

Earl was bishop of the Chester Ward for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Among his other callings, he was a bishop’s counselor and temple worker in the Manti Temple.

Clocks and calendars Y ou can take your hand off of your wallet now. The Utah legislature finished their 45 day session a couple of weeks ago. There were a lot of bills passed – 513.

Gov. Cox now needs to take a look at those bills and decide whether to sign them or not.

Senate Bill 175 was not passed. It didn’t make it out of committee. SB175 had to do with how we set our clocks in Utah. Sen. Dan McCay, a Republican from Riverton called it a plan to “spring forward and stay sprung.” Some people want standard time year-round, some don’t.

It’s a never-ending debate.

For one, the ski industry opposed the proposed law. Later sunrises shorten the ski day because avalanche control work needs to be done each morning.

Time was, there was no such thing as daylight saving time. Time was, there was no such thing as federal holidays being always on Monday. Time was, in my short (ahem) lifetime, clocks and calendars were a little different.

But, here we are again adjusting ourselves to the semi-annual time change.

This week we were again jerked around with another twist of the clock.

I must admit that the spring time change isn’t as hard on me as the autumn change. I don’t like the sudden plunge into darkness each fall.

I don’t think farmers pay much attention to daylight saving time.

They don’t care much what time it is. They’re a practical bunch. If it’s light out, they get up and go do the chores. When it starts to get dark, they finish what they need to do in the daylight.

They would probably agree with the description I heard somewhere that daylight saving time is like the old Native American woman who cut off the end of her blanket and sewed it onto the other end in order to make the blanket longer.

(I don’t know why it needs to be a Native American woman, it could just as well have been an English woman, a Utah woman or a Sanpete man for that matter. But, I suppose an Indian blanket (I don’t know how else to say that, so if I’m politically incorrect, forgive me) makes more sense to me than a Caucasian blanket or a Sanpete blanket. I’m not an expert, but I can’t think of any other “ethnic blankets.”)

Actually, daylight saving time has been around for a long time. Ben Franklin is generally credited with coming up with the idea. He was a real idea guy. (Think bifocal glasses, the lightning rod, swim fins and yes – urinary catheters) Daylight saving time was never really standardized, fully used and solidified in this country until the 1960s. I’m old

enough to remember some of the discussion about it. I know that drive-in movie theaters were opposed to the idea.

As far as I know, Arizona and Hawaii are the only states that haven’t adopted the twice a year time change.

Sometimes I think Sanpete should buck the system and secede from the daylight saving time crowd. Even if it’s just a publicity stunt, I think it would be a good idea. Actually, if it were just a publicity stunt, it would be the best idea. Being a daylight saving time free zone could be a spring-board for fame for Sanpete.

I think we could develop a T-shirt industry that would bring lots of funds to the county. Think of the messages that could go on the shirts: “Sanpete, the land that time forgot.”

(Well, I don’t know. That one might be true regardless of whether we do the clock thing or not.)

Another might be: “Too lazy to change your clock twice a year? Move to Sanpete County” Or, stealing from the band Chicago’s song: “Does anybody really know what time it is?

Does anybody really care?

Not in Sanpete County, Utah, we don’t” I’m thinking that the mental health of Sanpete’s turkey population is reason enough alone for keeping an unchanging clock. I’ve heard that a poultry grower in Canada says that chickens “do not adapt to the changed clock…and the last week of October is very frustrating for us.” (I’m wondering who told the chickens what time it was?)

Lastly, a word about Monday holidays – again.

What possessed us to allow the three-day holidays to use Monday rather than Friday? This happened in 1971 under President Nixon.

My long-time beef is that we live in a country where our motto is “In God We Trust” – yet we put the day (Sunday), when people have religious obligations, as the middle day of our three day holiday weekends.

Can someone explain that to me? Should Sanpete start a groundswell letter writing campaign to Congressman Stewart to introduce a bill to effect a change? (That would probably be like a twenty-year project) I suspect that he has bigger fish to fry.

A few days ago, I wrote him and our two senators. Like many of you, most likely, I have been agitated about conditions in the world. I gave them my “expert opinion.” I recommend that all Sanpeters write our representatives and share what’s on your mind. It’s easy.

An old poem states, “Make new friends, but keep the old; the new are silver, the old are gold.” Researchers are finding that friendships are worth even more than silver or gold. The benefits of friendship increase your sense of belonging and purpose, contribute to improved self-worth and confidence, help you cope with traumatic events in your life, and increase happiness while reducing stress.

In a study published by the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, researchers noted, “In-

corporating social support and connections is critical for overall health and for healthy habits to be sustainable.” They also found evidence that social support helps people maintain a variety of health factors such as blood sugar control, heart health, a healthy body mass index, cancer survival improvement, and overall mental health improvement.

Another study published in The American Journal of Psychiatry concluded that “social connection is the strongest protective factor for depression.”

Adults can find it difficult to develop new friendships or main-

tain existing friendships because responsibilities such as work or taking care of a family often take priority. Additionally, friendships change as people change interests or move away. However, you are never too old, and it is never too late to reach out to old friends or make new ones. Friendship takes effort, but given the benefits, the extra work is worth it.

The suggestions below from the Mayo Clinic can help you nurture new and existing friendships.

1. Be kind. This is the core of successful relationships. You get back what you put in, so make

certain what you give is positive and kind. Express gratitude for the small things.

2. Be a good listener. Let your friend know you are interested in his or her life. Show interest through eye contact and body language. Try to listen and ask clarifying questions, but don’t respond with advice unless it is solicited.

3. Open up. Share about your life to build connection with your friend. This shows that they hold a special place in your life and you trust them. Try expressing your feelings with “I” statements to build the relationship.

4. Show that you can be trusted. Be dependable, reliable, and responsible. When your
