Exhibit showcases strength of Latin American youth

MOUNT PLEASANT — The experiences of eight Utah artists from Latin America is the focus of an exhibition opening on January 11 at the Hub City Art Gallery. Eres Poderosx / You Are Powerful, which will be on display until Febuar 24, is a collection of works from the Nopalera Artist Collection, a cooperative of artists from different cultures and backgrounds that amplifies the voices of their communities through their work. The artists featured all now live, and thrive, in the harsh desert landscape of Utah. The artists include Izzy Fernandez,

David Peralta, Ella Mendoza, Jorge Arellano, Veronica Perez, Andrew Alba, Lola Reyes and Melissa Alvarez. Their works touch on the experiences as migrants, as well as the people and cultures of Latin America. In particular, the artists focus on the experiences of youth, offering a love letter and testament to the power of past, present, and future generations. Eres Poderosx will be shown at Hub City Gallery, 115 West Main, from January 11 to February 24 in Mount Pleasant. Hub City Gallery is open weekdays from 10:00 — 2:00. The exhibit is presented by the Utah Division of Arts & Museums Traveling Exhibits program.

Volunteers collect food in the support of those in need, donate if you can in Sanpete.

Throughout the holidays Sanpete County residents have opened their hearts to support many initiatives to help those in need here in Sanpete. Families that would have otherwise went without a Christmas had food, toys under the tree and new warm clothing thanks to the generosity of our local citizens. But outreach programs are faced with the stark reality that with the holidays over the daily struggle continues for many. Job loss has impacted many; government relief packages have doled out some funding, but with large gaps between stimulus checks it has still been difficult for some families to get by. But for other families the challenges are greater. Language barriers, lack of transportation, geographic isolation and nonresident status make

access to funding and food relief almost impossible. It may be difficult to imagine that here in our very own county families are without utilities, food and warm clothing. But that is a reality for too many families. Even though the holidays are over, programs to aid those in need are continuing.

Mt. Pleasant Library Coat Drive The Mt Pleasant Library Coat Drive, which ran through December 31st, was a huge success, and the library Board of Directors thanks everyone who donated warm outerwear to the cause. Hundreds of coats were collected and distributed through the initiative. Hand knitted hats were donated by the carton. Citizens of Sanpete County were generous and kind. The Mt Pleasant Library would

like to let residents know that donations are still welcome. Even though the Coat Drive officially ended on December 31st the need is ongoing. The library will continue to take donations of new and lightly used coats, hats, gloves, and scarves throughout the season. Donations can be dropped off at the Mt Pleasant Library at 24 East Main Street in Mt Pleasant.

Sanpete Pantry 3 And Me

The Sanpete Pantry feeds hundreds of food insecure kids throughout the county with “KidPacks” and supports many families with food and outreach services. The current 3 And Me fundraising challenge is an ongoing effort to raise money to support the Sanpete Pantry throughout the year. It has been highly successful, and through this campaign the Sanpete Pantry hopes to continue raising funds each quarter. Though this

initiative is ambitious it is achievable. This month the Food Pantry has a fundraising goal of $30,000. The need is never-ending. The Sanpete Pantry currently faces the logistical challenge of reaching families that are isolated geographically. Without transportation many of these families have no access to the services the Sanpete Pantry provides at the Mt Pleasant facility. The Pantry’s outreach efforts are currently serving Gunnison once a month with a box truck that makes the trip to Gunnison to reach people who can’t reach Mt Pleasant. But the city of Gunnison needs food services two or three times a month. In addition, key low-income areas of the county, older generation areas and small or remote communities like Indianola, Fountain Green, Mayfield, Axtell,
