Looking Back…
A busy and productive year, as usual! :
1) As “team players”, the library staff continues to act as substitutes for teachers & departments, handling multiple classes per period throughout the days/weeks, as well as regular library research and instruction.
2) Now to analyze some of the numbers:
A) Total circulation numbers were down slightly, although Sophomore English classes (curriculum and independent reading) greatly attributed to the high numbers for that particular grade.
B) Many more titles / copies were added to the collection this year as compared to last year; likewise, more titles / copies were weeded.
C) Overall database usage dipped a bit; however, depending on the assignment/project, numbers increased for specific subject-related resources. For example, numbers increased for National History Day kickoff research in the Fall and English Research papers in the Spring
D) More Ebooks & audiobooks were accessed but with less time viewing. Five more topic-specific LibGuides were created but with less views overall.
3) Another successful National Library Week of presenters and performers! Lots of positive feedback, encouragement, participation, & assistance from the entire MSJ community. Thank you!
4) Chess Tournaments and weekly meetings, Graphic Novel Book Club weekly meetings, (and Faculty-Staff Book Club! ), hosted by and in the library all remain very popular for students. See some pics here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/tFVeCbMdvpFpFJW88
5) Physical Inventory Completed in January 2025. Over 20,000+ items individually scanned (800+ page report PDF here)
Looking Ahead: General Library Goals for 2024-2025
Staying true to the mission & philosophy of the MSJ Library (as stated in the Policy Manual found here), we will continue to enforce school-widerules (no phones, no food/drink, etc.) while fostering an atmosphere of quiet individual study as well as small group collaboration.
We will continue to work with Mrs. Bruce & the English Dept to promote and encourage use of The Writing Center located in the Library.
We will continue to advocate for upgrades to the 24 year old library space! EXTREME wear & tear of furniture and desktop computers. All day, everyday use by teenage boys require immediate repair/replacement. As unchanged from last year’s request:
● Soft seating needs to be steam-cleaned (non-removable cushions). Very dingy & dirty! Lots of nail pops in wooden arm rests.
● Carpet spot steam-cleaned every summer by the librarian and Ms. Ursula. Needs full, whole-carpet cleaning! Also, need repair/replacements for lots of seem rips and tears (due to nail pops in chairs, see below)
● Over two-thirdsof our hard wooden chairs are loose, wobbly and/or broken – BEYOND REPAIR. Funds from the general Library Budget have been specifically held out and allocated for the past few years to pay for approx. 20 new chairs (what should be deemed a “Capital Expense”). However, order requests have been annuallyDENIEDwith no reasonable explanation provided.
