December 12 Your

Greetings!

Thank you for connecting with Leisure Magazine–Prince William County’s go-to source for all things recreation. Winter is a great time to re-center our bodies and minds amid nature’s stillness and ready ourselves for the new opportunities that will blossom in spring. As John Steinbeck said, what good is the warmth of summer without the cold of winter to give it sweetness. With over 65 parks and historic sites, 50 miles of trail, and 5 recreation centers, the possibilities are endless for staying active this winter.

Our passionate staff has created a stellar line-up of specialty programs to sustain you all season long. Kick off the holiday season with a stroll along the Holiday Walk of Lights (see page 15) at Neabsco Regional Park, starting on December 1st and running through December 23rd. Embark on a First Day Hike (see page 35) at Bristow Station Battlefield Heritage Park led by local historians on New Year’s Day. Test your endurance on a 90-minute ride with a mix of hills and drills at the Chinn Cycle Challenge (see page 31) at the Chinn Aquatic and Fitness Center on January 14. Join Master Naturalist Candice Lowther at Veteran’s Park in search of waterfowl in their winter habitat like loons, ducks, geese, and merganser at Winter Waterfowl (see page 40) on February 18th.

Commemorate African American history month (see page 35) at historic Lucasville School for a discussion about education during post Civil War reconstruction on February 10th and 11th. Develop physical, emotional, and social skills by through traditional running games at Ready to Run: Introduction to Running (see page 46) at the Sharron Baucom Dale City Recreation Center on January 7th and February 4th. Introduce your child to ballet technique and terminology while learning classical ballet stories at Ballet Beginnings (see page 26) January 2nd-March 12th at the Sharron Baucom Dale City Recreation Center.

For our amazing special needs community we are offering Healthy Kids Club (see page 13) in January and March at the Chinn Aquatic and Fitness Center to develop fine and gross motor skills needed for sports. Make personal dessert pizzas while celebrating friendship and learning new skills at Love You to Pizzas (see page 13) at the Birchdale Recreation Center on February 9th, and join the dance party in the water at Aqua Zumba (see page 13) for a fun, but challenging body-toning workout

at the Chinn Aquatic and Fitness Center on January 12th and March 8th.

Be sure to come out to the Dale City Winters Farmer’s Market (see page 29) every Sunday morning between 10-1 for a unique selection of artisan goods and select produce pwcparks.info/ farmersmarkets.

Visit the recently opened Rollins Ford Park at 14500 Rollins Ford Road in Nokesville and experience a farm-themed playground, 2+ miles of walking trails, a dog park, and basketball court. Hike the wooded trails at James Long and Silver Lake Parks or learn about Prince William history by touring the County’s original seat of government at the Brenstville Courthouse or the second oldest house at Rippon Lodge. With www.pwcrecmapper.com we make it easy to find the perfect destination for outdoor exploration.

For those who prefer the warmth of the indoors, we offer great membership rates (see page 3) for the Chinn and Dale City/Sharron Baucom Aquatic/ Fitness Centers that include access to both facilities for $55 per month with no initiation fee and access to over 160 land and water group fitness class per week! *NEW* PILATES PRINCIPLES SPRING 2024 FREE EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOP

Ages 14+ | Sharron Baucom Dale City Recreation Center

"To achieve the highest accomplishment within the scope of our capacities in all walks of life, we must constantly strive to acquire strong, healthy bodies and develop our minds to the limit of our ability.” –Joseph Hubertus Pilates.

Concentration: Concentration allows you to pay attention to your entire body - knowing what all the parts of your body are doing at any given moment. To do Pilates movements correctly, you must focus full attention to your muscles, body position and your breathing. For Joseph, “concentration” meant more than just the attention required to successfully perform each exercise.

Control: It is the act of controlling your movements in a relaxed way to reduce tension. With proper control, you utilize precise form, leaving no part of your body unattended by using mindful awareness to you direct each and every movement. Joseph placed great emphasis on the importance of deliberately controlling every movement and all parts of the body when performing the Pilates repertoire. He believed participants in a Pilates class needed to exercise control over the mind to create exact movements in the body.

Reconstruction in the wake of the Civil War brought with it new opportunities for African Americans in Prince William County. Four years before they had been barred from learning to read and write by Virginia state law, though that did not stop them from learning on their own or others teaching them despite the severe punishments possible. Now, schools would open for free instruction of all who wished to attend. These early schools faced many obstacles, from irregular funding, teacher shortages, political threats, and even open violence. Join us as we commemorate African American History Month at historic Lucasville School and visit the reconstructed 19th century school for a discussion about how people met these challenges and overcame them to help build a better future.
