2018 Fall Leisure

Page 1

Valued Customers and Friends, Thank you for picking up a copy of Leisure Magazine—Prince William’s go-to source for finding the perfect program or outdoor experience to meet your needs. Inside these pages, you will find nearly 700 program offerings spread across dozens of inviting facilities and 4,200 acres of gorgeous parkland. We carefully planned a menu of inclusive services to cater to almost every age group and ability. In our effort to respond to changing customer needs and ride the cusp of emerging trends, we are introducing many new programs for you to try. The Department of Parks and Recreation is in the midst of many exciting changes. We recently created the Office of Tourism to promote the County’s wide array of attractions—including many of our parks—as well as advance sports tourism and special event opportunities. Our “Crush Friday” initiative encourages people to spend a Friday off from work to indulge in Prince William’s vibrant culture, arts, and culinary scene (go to www.visitpwc.com to explore options). We are reinvesting more in our existing parks and facilities than ever before. So far this year we have spent nearly $4 million on removing accessibility barriers, rehabbing pools, and upgrading building systems. One of the most notable projects was construction of a new 6,600 square foot Sprayground at Waterworks Waterpark in the Neabsco District. The 400 gallon-per-minute ensemble of fountain jets, slides, and dump buckets replaces the outdated kiddie pool area. Nurturing our older facilities has not deterred us from investing in park expansion to meet growing demand for recreation space. We are building a ¾ mile boardwalk over Neabsco Creek in the Woodbridge District that will allow hikers, bikers, and nature enthusiastic to get up close and personal with a wetland ecosystem. In June, we cut the ribbon on the new Ali Krieger Sports Complex in the Potomac District, named after a U.S. Soccer Olympian and Prince William native. The complex boasts two artificial turf fields, a playground, and comfort station and will expand to five fields next year. Furthermore, the 2019 budget includes funds to complete unfinished projects at Catharpin and Rollins Ford Parks. We are grateful for the value our elected leaders place on recreation and place-making. Despite our progress, there is much more to do and we need your help. Please participate in one of this falls public input opportunities to help us vision for the future. The Recreation Needs Assessment is a critical tool to objectively determine our community’s recreation needs over the next 10 years. Also consider attending a Park Commission meeting, which occur the 3rd Wednesday of every month (go to www.pwcparks.org for locations) to learn about current projects and initiatives. For many families, autumn is a revival of old routines. This year I challenge you to break the norm by finding new ways to get active. Venture into an unfamiliar park. Sign-up for that fitness class your neighbor is raving about. Enroll your child in a new sport. We are eager to provide an array of avenues for your enrichment. I appreciate your patronage and wish you a wonderful fall season! Seth Hendler-Voss Director of Parks and Recreation Prince William County, VA (o) 703.792.4284

Preschool Curriculum

Nature is an important element in building the foundation of a child’s learning. Not only does nature aid in a child’s fitness and overall physical health, it also helps in moral development, academic learning, as well as parent, child, and community interactions. Our Nature Preschool at Grō will provide a supportive, safe learning environment to encourage discovery, question-asking and experimentation. Using both indoor and outdoor classrooms, our nature preschool will be filled with sensory experiences, natural objects, artifacts, trail activities and art materials so that students will have the opportunity to utilize all five senses. Our curriculum will be enhanced by the nature experience, but will also be geared to developing cognitive growth, motor skills, and problem solving through hands on learning. As we prepare your child for their Kindergarten experience, our program will also incorporate language through songs, stories and dramatic play as well as cultivate social skills and positive self image through cooperative learning and play.

By using our developmentally appropriate curriculum, our experienced and educated teachers will incorporate activities to strengthen language, literacy, fine motor and cognitive s kills. Children will become eager learners through both self-guided and teacher-led activities in our unique indoor and outdoor classroom environments. Our comprehensive, statelicensed preschool curriculum includes subject areas in math, science, motor development, social studies, language, art, music and self/social development.

Outdoor Classrooms

Our outdoor classroom will have a variety of stations for preschoolers to explore music, art, movement, gardening and the natural world around them.
