‘Mary Poppins’ Playing At The Norris Theatre

Peninsula Outlook By Mary Scott

• Disney musical ‘Mary Poppins’ entertains at the Norris this week. “Mary Poppins” is a timeless story, which has enchanted the young and the young at heart since the early part of the 20th century. The lessons

to take from Mary Poppins – a magical nanny who arrives at 17 Cherry Lane in the heart of Edwardian London to temper two irrepressible children – are to live life authentically and to cherish those you love. Messages that, honestly, never grow old! Palos Verdes Performing Arts has brought this wonderful story to local audiences, opening its 33rd season last week with a new stage version

. . . Continued from Page 2 that introduces Mary, Bert, and the Banks family to a new generation of children. Overcoming major technical difficulties that plagued the cast and crew on opening night, PVPA offered an endearing production the following day. We begin this journey with Jane and Michael Banks, who want nothing more than their father’s love and attention. But according to Father, George Banks, children are to live an orderly life, guided by a strict set of rules taught to them by a firm and unchallenged nanny. Jane and Michael, a precocious pair, go about bedeviling their nannies, eventfully running them out of their home. They meet their match, however, when the mysterious Mary Poppins arrives, flying into town and into their lives. Mary uses her wit, charm, and “A Spoonful of Sugar” to show the Banks family how wondrous life can be, mending and strengthening their relationships with one another. The PVPA production, directed by Tony Mansker, features outstanding performances by Lucas Coleman as Bert, Craig Woolson as George Banks, Kellie Cundiff as Winifred Banks, and the delightful Aine Lee and Paul Kerk-

er as Jane and Michael. The Ensemble delivers show-stopping numbers in “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” “Playing the Game,” and “Step in Time.” But what makes this show truly a must-

able to deliver pitch-perfect the iconic songs made famous by Julie Andrews in Walt Disney’s 1964 film. Love the film? You won’t be disap-

pointed in the stage musical. Disney collaborated with show creator Cameron Mackintosh, who purchased the theatrical rights from “Mary Poppins” author P.L. Travers in 1994, to create the production. Disney and Mackintosh tapped Julian Fellowes (you may know him as the creator of “Downtown Abbey”) to pen the book and composers George Stiles and Anthony Drewe (“Honk!”) to write new music. Audiences will still hear the original songs they love from the film, including “Feed the Birds,”“Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” and Academy Award-winning “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” written Richard and Robert Sherman. The stage production does vary slightly from the beloved film, as Fellowes also drew from Travers’ collection for the play. (She wrote eight “Mary Poppins” books in total.) And, trust me, the magic of Mary Poppins has not been forgotten. All of it has been brought to life with the use of clever stage tricks. How does Bennett pull a coat rack, lamp, and full-length mirror from a small carpet bag? I don’t want to know. I just want to believe that in theater, and in life, “Anything Can Happen.”

Panthers Drama Shines In Scotland

Field Trip

• Peninsula High drama students return from the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. Twenty-fout members of Peninsula High's award-winning drama department spent the first two weeks of August in the U.K, first in London and then in Edinburgh, Scotland. Their 11 days in Scotland focused on a very successful four-performance run of the play, The SeussOdyssey, by Don Zolidis, which performed at Venue 53 - Surgeon's Grand Hall, at the famed Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The Edinburgh Fringe is the world's largest arts festival bringing together tens of thousands of performers from all over the world. This year's Fringe featured over 3,000 productions and nearly 50,000 performers at nearly 350 venues in Scotland's capital city. Peninsula's drama department was invited by the American High School Theatre Festival.

This once-in-a-lifetime experience gave Peninsula students the opportunity to perform on a global stage The overseas trip was Peninsula's chance to participate in a cultural exchange with the rest of the world, in the world's largest gathering of artists. In addition to seeing high school productions from all over North America, (including Chadwick) students enjoyed a variety of performances of artists from England, Ireland, Scotland, Belgium, Japan and countless other places around the world.

Panthers Tennis Keeps Winning Streak Alive

Girls Tennis

• Panthers extend winning streak to 56 after another tournament victory. By Dale Pyoun As Vince Lombardi puts it, “Winning is habit.” This quote cannot be more perfectly shown than through the Peninsula High Girls Tennis team, who recently won at the 1st annual Golden State Tennis Classic last week. This was expected because with a 56-win streak stretching over three years, Peninsula currently holds California’s best high school girls tennis team. The Peninsula girls kept up their competitive spirit and reputation at the Classic by winning all of their matches and dominating the 16-team tournament field. During the tournament, Peninsula defeated San Jose’s Leland, 6-1, in the first round and Redwood High, 7-0, in the quarters.

Playing at Stanford’s Taube Tennis Center, The Panthers took apart NorCal power Monta Vista, 7-0, in the semis. Monta Vista has won the NorCal Northern State Regional 8 out of the last 12 years. Undefeated for the weekend were singles players Ena Shibahara, Ryan Peus, Sara Khattab and Alana Roth and the doubles team of Katelyn Parker/Laudan Hosseini. Also contributing to the weekend success were Tia Elpusan, Sarina Liu, Adelya Karaalp, Luccia Aulet-Leon, Alexa Graupner, Serena Ko, and Amanda Sharong. Lead by coach Mike Hoeger, the girls demonstrated once again how Peninsula tennis is indeed a force to be reckoned with. It will be interesting to see how this year will fare for the players and we wish them all the best. Now the real question is how long will this seemingly endless streak last?

Best In The State . . . The Peninsula High girls’ tennis team have a Southern Section State Regional title and a 56-match win streak stretching over three years that proves they are the best tennis team in California.

Panthers Defense Shines In Win

Varsity Football • Panthers defeat Torrance and look to get better for Bay League play. The Peninsula Panthers won their first game of the season last week when they defeated the Torrance Tartars, 13-7, at Zamperini Field. The Panthers (1-2 on the season) got the win despite penalties that cost them more than 100 yards of offense. The game began as a defensive bat-

Peninsula’s defensive coordinator, coach Brian Bojorquez, created a unique scheme for the team, and they used it to perfection. Peninsula struck first in the middle of the second quarter with a two-yard touchdown run by junior running back Marco Merola. The touchdown followed a 60-yard pass from quarterback Daniel Shubert to senior Jack Grimes. The Panthers led 7-0 at halftime. Both teams came out in the second half determined to take control of the game. Peninsula had several long drives, but were plagued by holding penalties, which prevented the offense from scoring. On defense, AJ Seymour had some key sacks, and Alex Martinez broke up a few passes to help Peninsula hold the lead through the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter begin as if it would be similar to the previous three,

but that all changed in the final five minutes of the game. Grimes intercepted a Torrance pass and returned it for a touchdown, giving the Panthers a 13-0 lead after they missed the point after. However, Peninsula’s defense finally faltered on the ensuing Torrance drive. The Tartars marched down the field with several big plays and capped the drive off with a touchdown, making the score 13-7. Schubert recovered Torrance’s onside kick attempt, but the Panthers could not move the ball and were forced to punt the ball away with only about one minute remaining. Torrance, caught the punt inside their own 10-yard line, and returned it 90 yards for a touchdown, as Peninsula did a poor job tackling the returner. Fortunately for the Panthers, a clipping penalty prevented the play from standing, and Merola intercepted a Torrance pass to ensure a Peninsula win. Despite the win over Torrance, now with an 0-3 record, there is a lot of room for improvement in the Panthers’ play, and time to get better before league play starts in a couple of weeks. — email reports

Link Crews Establish Lasting Links Service • Link Crew leaders lead the way for new students. By Tyler Patterson To the dread of thousands of students, school is back. While few people are thrilled about the sleepless nights and piles of homework to come, incoming high school freshmen will have the toughest time getting used to the rigors of the academic, social, and athletic life at their school. Whether it is learning the difference between the Counseling Office and the Attendance Office or figuring out which buildings have the best restrooms, freshmen need help. Thankfully, at Peninsula freshmen have upperclassmen they can ask for advice or rely on to be a friend. These upperclassmen are dedicated, passionate, and hardworking students. They are Link Crew leaders. It’s the responsibility of the Link Crew leaders to help incoming freshmen have a more comfortable transition from middle school to high school. These juniors and seniors were chosen carefully by Ms. Dibble and Mrs. Alvillar, teachers and Link Crew coordinators at Peninsula. Link Crew leaders had to show that they are not only commit-

ted to helping others, but that they also have a quirky side to them. Alex Rosemond, a Link Crew leader, admitted, “The most important thing a Link Crew leader should have is a great sense of humor and the ability to thrive in group settings.” For most of the selected Link Crew leaders, it’s this balance of lightheartedness, school spirit, and working well with others, that set them apart from the rest. At the end of the selection process, only 122 students were chosen out of roughly 250 people who applied. The leaders then went through a grueling 12 hours of training over two days to prepare for freshmen orientation. The orientation included fun activities with Link Crew leaders and freshmen, some words from Principal Mitzi Cress, and wise advice from Coordinator Ms. Dibble. Senior Link Crew leader Mathew Miramontes smiled as he thought back to Orientation Day. “Everyone was really excited to be there and the atmosphere in the gym was incredible,” Miramontes said. Each Link Crew leader is assigned to a group of about 10-15 freshmen who will be a part of their group for the entire year. Throughout the school year, Link Crew leaders will stay in contact with

Huskies

Peninsula High Leaders Come Through . . . Members of Link Crew celebrate the first days of school and welcome new students to campus. their freshmen to check up on them and make sure everything is going smoothly. Leaders will also host events and hold various games/activities designed to form bonds among the freshmen. Miramontes, who has been in the program for two years, says that the main quality Link Crew leaders share is “great communication skills. “As a leader you have to reach out and give advice to your freshmen whenever you are called upon,” Miramontes said. Link Crew leaders are already planning ahead to ensure the freshmen at Peninsula will have a wonderful year. They already understand the difficulty of coming to a completely different environment and being overwhelmed at times.

Manaho Ogawa, who is in his first year as a leader, said, “I talk with my freshmen quite frequently. I see some of them every day and talk to them to see how they are doing. Whenever an event is coming up, I remind them and encourage them to attend. It’s fantastic seeing them succeed in school!” At the end of the day, no matter how much advice the Link Crew leaders give the freshmen, it is ultimately up to the freshmen to assimilate themselves into high school life and test some things out for themselves. After all, as Rosemond put it, “The biggest thing you can teach your freshmen is to always be yourself because no one can take that from you.”

Varsity Football

• Palos Verdes bounces back for a win and looks to peak for Bay League play.

By Matthew Gilbertson Palos Verdes picked up its first win of the season last week, defeating Foothill by a score of 17-7. After losing their first three games, the Sea Kings responded with a solid team effort and a notable defensive performance. It was the first home game for the Sea Kings, as the previous matchup against Narbonne High was moved to a neutral location at Mira Costa. In front of their home fans, the Sea Kings took the lead and held it for the entire game. Junior Nicolas Alessi intercepted the first attempted pass of the game, and put the Sea Kings in a

great position to open the game with a score. After the offense was unable to gain the few yards needed for a touchdown, Kyle Coale made the short kick to give the Sea Kings the lead. The next score came on a touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Jake Nolls to Shane Irwin. The Sea Kings continued to hold Foothill scoreless, and added another touchdown on a run by Adison Umrarong. Umrarong also contributed on defense, as he intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter that secured the victory. Palos Verdes looks to continue to build on their momentum as they take on Carson on the road. It will be the last game before league play begins against Mira Costa, when the Sea Kings hope to continue their dominance in Bay League.
