Four Rounds Later LACC Proves Par A Winning Score For U.S. Open
US Open Golf
• Stars alinged for the Los Angeles Country Club to host the U.S. Open and the best golfers in the world.
By Timothy NiemannIt was a U.S. Open 75 years in the making. For the first time since 1948, golf’s most demanding test returned to Los Angeles. And for the first time, the Los Angeles Country Club played host to the best players in the world.
The field of players was star-studded, as is fitting for a golf tournament just a few miles from Hollywood.
But despite all the big-name players, Wyndham Clark, a rising star on tour who had never previously finished in the top 70 in a major championship, shocked everyone with his victory in the 123rd U.S. Open.
The USGA, the organization that runs the U.S. Open, had been eyeing LACC as a host course for decades. LACC, however, consistently shooed away the USGA’s desires, even directly turning down an offer to host the 1986 U.S. Open. But as time passed, LACC gradually became more willing to showcase its media-shy club to the world, and in 2015, LACC membership voted to allow the club to host the 123rd U.S. Open.
LACC has two courses, but the U.S. Open was held on the North Course, a par 70 that interestingly has five par threes. Designed by famed golf course architect George C. Thomas, the North
Course first opened in 1927 but did undergo a 2010 restoration by Gil Hanse.
The players got off to a fast start in Round 1. Cloud cover for most of the day provided for incredibly soft course conditions, allowing players to post some historically low scores.
On the first day, Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele became the first players to ever shoot 62 at a U.S. Open. The historically low scores brought about some criticism of the golf course, with some critics saying that LACC was not a hard enough golf course to host a U.S. Open.
But LACC’s North Course quickly began to bite back. In Round 2, Rickie Fowler continued to play well but shot a less impressive 68. Schauffele proved unable to repeat his historic round one performance, shooting an even-par 70.
Clark emerged as a serious contender in the championship, ending the second round at nine strokes under par and in sole possession of second place. Fowler led the field at 10 under par.
Over the weekend, LACC revealed itself as a true U.S. Open golf course. The leading score at the conclusion of rounds three and four remained at 10 under par. On Saturday, Clark shot 69 while Fowler shot 70; they both sat in a tie for first place going into Sunday. Rory McIlroy continued to play strongly, holding sole possession of second and sitting just one shot back of the leaders after Saturday.
The final round was an exciting back-and-forth between Clark and Mc-
Ilroy. Fowler struggled all day, putting himself out of contention relatively early in the round. Clark maintained the lead all day, although McIlroy pulled into a tie for first early on. Clark established himself as the sole leader on the fourth hole, and he never looked back after that.
McIlroy struggled to find birdies and Clark made few bogeys. There was no lack of drama, however. McIlroy appeared poised to make a charge for the victory after Clark made back-to-back bogeys on the 15th and 16th holes.
But McIlroy couldn’t convert multiple long birdie putts late in his round, and Clark steadied himself with pars on the final two holes. Ultimately, Clark won the championship by one stroke with a cumulative score of 10 under par. McIlroy placed second.
Los Angeles won’t have to wait 75 years again to host its next U.S. Open. The tournament will return to The Los Angeles Country Club in 2039, and the USGA just announced that the 2031 U.S. Open will be held at nearby Riviera Country Club. The 123rd U.S. Open was one for the record books in a lot of ways, and it will forever hold a special place in golf history as the first U.S. Open in Los Angeles since 1948.
Wyndham Clark etched his name into golf immortality. And one thing is for sure–there’s no chance Hollywood could have written a better script than what played out at LACC at the 123rd United States Open.
