RHE Holds 60th Annual Scouts’ Pancake Breakfast Pancakes!

the Peninsula Scouts for a great pancake breakfast at Ernie Howlett Park last week.

Best Breakfast On The Hill . . . Plenty of Scouts were on hand to cook and

serve pancakes and sausage to the hundreds of guests supporting the Scouts.

Rolling Hills Estates Old School . . . More than 80 horses were used to transport city leaders from city hall to the stables at Ernie Howlett Park.

Scout troops from all over the Peninsula attended the event, which was highlighted by the annual Mayor’s Ride, where members of the Rolling Hills Estates City Council arrive by horseback to feast on the pancakes, scrambled eggs and sausage. Frank Zerunyan, a member of the RHE City Council, has participated in the event for 15 years. He has been mayor three times and has been in office since 2003. “It’s the community aspect of the Mayor’s Pancake Breakfast that makes it so unique,” said Zerunyan. “It is so unique. You can go anywhere in the world, frankly, and you would not find such a wonderful community event like this. It’s an event where everybody gets together -- children, parents, horsemen, horses, dogs, you name it. That is what makes it very special.” Along with hundreds of community members participating in the event, there were a record number of 80 horses at the park. Since there were so many people, it took many Boy Scouts to accommodate the crowd. Elijah Ding, a junior from Peninsula High School, has been in Scouting since the 5th grade, and this is his 5th year at the pancake breakfast. “My favorite part of the event is spending time with my friends from other troops, but also providing for the community in a very fun way,” Ding said. Peninsula high junior Jared Caylor is the senior patrol leader and head Scout. He was in Cub Scouts since second grade and was promoted to Boy Scouts in sixth grade. This is his seventh year helping out at the pancake breakfast. The Boy Scouts have given him many amazing opportunities, including going to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico over summer where they hiked 107 miles in 12 days. “Just seeing the community come together and helping the community eat breakfast together is the best part of the event,” said Caylor.

PEN Robotics In AP Testing Season Adds Stress For Local Students World Competition Test Season Robotics

By Daniel Meyerhof Two weekends ago, the Peninsula High VEX robotics team took its talents to Louisville, Ky., for World Competitions. VEX competition consist of designing and building a robot to play against other robots in a game-based engineering challenge. More than 16,000 teams from all over the country made the trip, including two from Peninsula, Team 3050A and Team 3050C. Both had positive records at the end of competition play. Team 3050A won a building award for best design. Junior Dhruv Ahluwalia has been on the VEX team since his freshman year. He had fun at this competition.

Dhruv said his favorite part of the trip was ‘’meeting all the different people and teams at the competition and outside of it.’’ VEX is not just about winning and losing, it’s a whole experience to bond with people all around the country. Award winning team 3050A is led by Saahil Parker and teacher Hassan Twiet. Both men have done a great job mentoring and developing their team into a comfortable environment. Robotics at Peninsula has been one of the strongest programs in the South Bay over the past few years. Most robotics members share a common goal of becoming engineers in the future. Being part of a team like VEX helps show colleges a student’s skills when it comes to engineering abilities. Peninsula finished the competition season strong and is ready for next season.

By Lily Shah May marks a stressful time for high school students across the nation. It means that AP season has begun. Peninsula and Palos Verdes high school students were tested last week on various college level courses that they have spent the year studying. The courses vary from language, high level math and various types of social and physical sciences. The AP (advanced placement) tests are cumulative exams of all material that has been presented in the course and is typically presented in a four-hour period. At both Peninsula and Palos Verdes high school, students are marked for high academic achievement. This stigma often leads students to involve themselves within

multiple, high-demanding AP courses. For some students their whole schedule is composed of these courses. Why do these students feel the need to take on such a rigorous schedule? “I feel the need to take high school courses (AP) because I’m following the paths my brothers took in high school”, said Liana Korotzer, a junior at Peninsula. For many students, the paths of siblings are a prominent factor in how they choose their high school paths. But other students’ motives differ. “I take a lot of APs because I want to have credits when I go to college so I don’t have to take the same classes again,” said John Szieff, a Peninsula senior currently taking six AP courses. A good number of students do take these courses so they can complete a course for college credit. And others take the courses with the in-

Panthers Down PV To End Season Volleyball

The rivalry continued on May 1, at 4:30 pm as Peninsula played against Palos Verdes in boys volleyball. The score ended up being 3-1 Peninsula Panthers. Just last month they played each other and the outcome was the total opposite; it was 3-1 Palos Verdes. The PEN vs. PV games for both schools always ignites the crowd and in almost every rivalry game there is an immense audience. These games are always the last game of the season for purposeful reasons. Most of the season for these two high school’s sports teams lead up to this final and suspenseful moment. The first set ended up being 25-20 Palos Verdes, the second set was 25-21 Peninsula, the third set was 25-20 Peninsula, and the final set resulted in a 2725 win by the Panthers. “I played volleyball last year and was really excited to come back and see all my friends play. A lot of students from both sides went to the game and it was really cool to see us beat Palos Verdes after losing the last time we played them,” said Josh Kahen, an athlete at Peninsula who watched attentively in the stands. The Panthers head coach, Kurt Barcenilla, is also a physiology/anatomy teacher at Peninsula. Peninsula did not make it to CIF this year, but both teams have had a strong season, amounting in many wins and many more to come in future seasons.

Don’t Ruin Baseball For Millennials

• Clocks don’t belong in the game of baseball.

By Timothy Niemann Baseball: The game without a clock. The game that is not over until there are three outs in the final inning. But if you attend most MiLB (minor league baseball) games, you’ll see a clock between at-bats, between pitches, and between innings. At all MLB (Major League Baseball) games, you’ll now see a clock between innings. Baseball is changing - changing

from the way it’s supposed to be played. Baseball is changing from its roots. If you want to intentionally walk someone, just hold four fingers up. It’ll save 30 seconds, definitely necessary. Only six mound visits per game so that you don’t have to waste three minutes of your life. Both of those rules have been implemented in Major League Baseball. While watching a baseball game on TV, Dan McLaughin, St. Louis Cardinals’ play-by-play announcer, said, sarcastically, “I’m really feeling the 30 seconds being saved by the new intentional walk rule!” Rob Manfred, MLB Commissioner,

continues to change the way baseball is played. Instant replay was added under Commissioner Bud Selig, and now, Manfred has added the intentional walk and the mound visits rules. If people can’t sit down for three hours to watch a baseball game, there’s no need to try to reel them into baseball. Real fans don’t care about 30 seconds of a game, yet, baseball keeps changing for the casual fans instead of the real fans. Why? Baseball doesn’t need to accommodate people that want to play video games all day. Baseball should accommodate the people that watch baseball

from April to October. Not to those who don’t know what tagging up means. Baseball is the game without a clock. But if baseball continues in the direction it’s going, it’ll lose its fans that care about the game, and it’ll have stadiums with barely anybody in the seats watching a game. If you care about three minutes and 30 seconds of a game, then don’t watch baseball. Baseball should never branch too far from its roots, and, if they do, they have a rude awakening coming.

Catcher’s Revenge . . . As noted at the beginning of the season, catchers all over the Peninsula have had enough of pesky baserunners thinking they can get away with stealing bases on them.

Local Athletes Qualify For CIF Track & Field • Palos Verdes and Peninsula High School athletes are competing in CIF today.

By Shelby Ponce As the high school track and field season sprints toward the finish line, all track and field athletes on the Hill that have qualified for CIF are competing today (Saturday, May 12) in the CIF prelims. Those athletes that qualify in today’s prelims, either by “wild-card” or hitting the qualifying requirements,

will compete in the CIF finals Saturday, May 19 at El Camino College. Peninsula High’s Jessica Nye qualified for the CIF prelims for the girls 1600 meter event (5:04.82) as well as the girls 800 meter event (2:20.42). Samantha Steman, a Palos Verdes sophomore, has clocked 11:04.94 to make the list for prelims in the girls’ 3200 meter. Wade Nygren, PV junior, qualified for the boys 3200 meter with a time of 9:37.73. Palos Verdes senior Grace Catena made the list with a lifetime best,

5:02.52 for the 1600 meter event. Savannah Scriven, Palos Verdes sophomore, also qualified for the 1600 with a time of 5:13.41. Palos Verdes junior Nate Lantz qualified for the boys’ 1600 with a best of 4:28.71. Another PV junior, Ryan Echeverria, qualified for the boys’ 400 with a 50.65 time. Palos Verdes freshman Ife Ibraheem qualified for the girls 100 meter prelims with a time of 12.36, a freshman record for Palos Verdes. PV senior William Boss made the prelims for the boys’ 100 meters with a best of 11.07.

In addition to being known as high achieving students, Peninsula and Palos Verdes high students are known for their high stress levels.

Many parents and adults surrounding the students believe that the AP level courses are what causes high levels of stress. However, many students see the taking of these courses differently. “I am in two AP classes. APs don’t affect my stress level until the weeks leading up to the tests.” said Mary Sweetnam a junior at Peninsula. Although the beginning of May brings stress to many high school students, many see a benefit in taking AP courses. They value the expansive education that is offered to them. And students are possibly more aware that AP course testing means that the last month of school is pretty relaxing, and post AP exams means students are transitioning into their summer mode.
