Track and Field Coaching Staff

DAVE BARNEY CO-HEAD COACH David Barney was hired as the first cross country coach at Paradise Valley Community College when the program was started in 1995. He was also the first track and field coach at PVCC when that program began in 1999. He has helped develop these programs into some of the most successful programs in the country. Since 1996, his men's and women's cross country teams have combined to win an impressive eight national championships (five women/three men), been runners up six times, were 3rd three times and 4th four times. Three PVCC runners have captured individual national championships and 51 have earned NJCAA All-American honors. The Puma cross country teams have claimed a combined 17 Region I Championships.

Since its inception in 1999, the PVCC Track and Field program, has also had a vast amount of success.

The Pumas have 27 times been in the top 10 at the NJCAA national meet. Numerous PVCC studentathletes have excelled individually, capturing 43 individual national championships and 116 NJCAA All-American awards.

Dave grew up in Arizona and has strong ties to its running community. He was a state cross country and track and field champion, as well as junior college national champion. Following his days as an NCAA All-American athlete at the University of Arkansas, he returned to Arizona. He competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials four times and twice represented the USA in the world championships as a member of the U.S. National Team. He has been named NJCAA Cross Country National Coach of the Year seven times and was named Indoor Track and Field National Coach of the Year in 2002. In 2012, Dave was honored as an inductee into the Arizona Runners Hall of Fame (along with Olympians Jesse Owens, Herman Frazier, and Lynn Nelson). Currently, he lives in Scottsdale with his wife Tracy and their six children, Michael, Meghan, Matthew, Jonathan, Elizabeth, and Rachel.

BRIAN BATLINER

CO-HEAD COACH

Brian Batliner joined the Puma Track & Field program as a co-head coach in 2014. Prior to joining the Pumas, Brian spent six seasons as an assistant coach with the Johnson County CC Cavaliers cross country and track programs in Overland Park, Kansas. For five of those season, Brian directed the JCCC jumps and multi’s program, coaching student-athletes in the long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, and multi-events.

In 2016, Brian will enter his seventh season of coaching jumpers and multi-event studentathletes. Under his guidance, student-athletes have produced 99 NJCAA National Championship qualifying marks, six National runner-up performances, six NJCAA All-America Performances, 34 NJCAA Coaches All-American performances, and have reached the national podium (top eight) 42 times.

Brian is passionate about the sport of track and field and has put forth efforts to grow the sport in the community and beyond. While in Kansas he spent four years helping coach the Johnson County Comets, one of the largest youth track clubs in the state, and also directed multiple clinics and camps that provided learning opportunities for youth and high school athletes. He has been a speaker at both the Arizona and Kansas High School Coaches Clinics and currently is a clinic coach for Sky Athletics Pole Vault as well as being involved with both the Kiss the Sky Summer Camp and the Reno Pole Vault Summit.

Brian was a student-athlete at University of Missouri Kansas City, Western State College and JCCC. As a community college student-athlete, he was a five-time All-American, five-time All-Region VI performer, seven-time All-Kansas Jayhawk Conference performer, and two-time conference indoor champion in the mile.

Brian earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at UMKC in 2008. In 2010, he earned a Level 1 coaching certificate from USATF. He is currently completing an MS in health, physical education and recreation from Emporia State University.

JASON CRAIG

ASSISTANT COACH - Sprints

Jason Craig joined the Paradise Valley Community College track and field team as an assistant coach in 2014. He is charged with working with the Puma sprinters, hurdlers, relay teams and middle distance runners and is starting his 11th year of coaching; seven years at the high school level along with his 4th year at the collegiate level.

Since arriving at Paradise Valley, Jason has coached multiple national qualifiers and has assisted his student-athletes in putting their stamps in the Pumas record books. Prior to joining the PVCC coaching staff, Jason was a successful head coach at Rend Lake College in Ina, Illinois. During his year with the Warriors, he coached nine student-athletes to All-American status as well as four NJCAA National Champions in the men’s indoor 4x800-meter relay.

A former Rend Lake College sprinter, Jason set nine school records between 2003 and 2005 and was an eight-time All-American award winner. He was also a National Champion in 2004-05 in the 400 meter dash as well as 4x800 meter relay. In 2004 Jason and his teammates broke the Junior World Record in the 4x400 meter relay. A native of Dayton, Ohio, Jason recently received his bachelor’s degree from Argosy University in 2015.

JIM LOTHROP

ASSISTANT COACH - Throws

Jim Lothrop joined the Paradise Valley Community College Track and Field program as an assistant coach in 2015. Jim brings knowledge and experience in all throwing events but is best well known for coaching elite and developmental javelin throwers throughout the Southwest. He has coached 12 USATF Youth National Champions in the javelin and spent time working with elite javelin throwers as part of John Godina’s World Throws Center (now Altis). He also spent time coaching the shot and discus at Horizon High School in Scottsdale.

Jim was an elite javelin thrower both in college and post collegiately. He attended Alma College in Alma, Michigan where he was on the basketball team as well as the track and field team all four years. During his time at Alma College he was an NCAA Division III runner-up in the javelin and he took 8th place in the discus. After college, Jim qualified for and competed in two Olympic trials in the javelin, placed as high as 5th and 8th at the USATF Outdoor Nationals, and was a two-time Sun Angel Classic Champion.

Jim received his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Alma College and worked as a computer programmer-analyst for over thirty-five years before retiring in 2015. He has used his computer savvy to administer an online Javelin discussion forum for the last fifteen years.

CAMILO TAFUR

ASSISTANT COACH – Pole Vault

Camilo Tafur joined the Puma Track and Field coaching staff during the 2013-2014 season as an assistant coach working with pole vaulters. Camilo brings a strong background to the Puma vault program. Prior to joining the PVCC staff he coached top vaulters at the high school level in both Arizona and New Mexico, including six state champions. He is currently on staff at the worldrenowned Kiss the Sky Summer Pole Vault Camp located in Payson, AZ as well as the UCS Spirit Reno National Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nevada.

Camilo currently runs weekly clinic sessions for all ages and abilities through Sky Athletics, helping to grow the sport of pole vaulting in the North Phoenix community.

During his time directing the Puma vault program, Camilo has coached 14 NJCAA national championship qualifiers, four of his student-athletes have been named NJCAA Coaches-All Americans, and five have made the national championships podium (top-eight) including a national runner-up performance in 2014.
