We are honoring the loss of our great friend, Rusty Rose, with the First Annual Edward W. “Rusty” Rose Award. The award is given to the person who, in the opinion of the committee, has done more than any other to bring truth and transparency to public securities markets.

Rusty was a brilliant businessman, generous philanthropist, and mentor to many. Through all of his many roles, truth was a guiding principle that he both lived by and expected from others.

Symposium Part I T. Boone Pickens Founder and CEO, BP Capital T. Boone Pickens is one of the nation’s most successful businessmen, first building one of the nation’s largest independent oil companies, Mesa Petroleum, and later reinventing himself in his 70s as one of the most successful investment fund operators with BP Capital. In July 2008, Mr. Pickens launched the Pickens Plan (PickensPlan.com), a $100 million grass-roots campaign aimed at reducing this country’s crippling addiction to OPEC oil.

Mr. Pickens’ 2008 book, The First Billion is the Hardest, detailed what America must do to win back its energy independence. He is also aggressively pursuing a wide range of other energy sector business interests.

CNBC has dubbed him “Oracle of Oil” for his uncanny knack of predicting oil price movements.

At a time in life when many businessmen are concentrating on the golf course and ship cruises, he remains a dynamic force in his industry, as evidenced by his fellow Dallas chief executives selecting him as DCEO magazine’s 2013 CEO of the Year. His many professional honors include membership in the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, the Texas Business Hall of Fame, and the Oklahoma Hall of Fame. In 1998, the Oil & Gas Investor listed him as one of the “100 Most Influential People of the Petroleum Century.” During the span of his career, Mr. Pickens has given away more than $1 billion to philanthropic causes. He is among the most generous university benefactors of all time, having contributed more than $500 million to his alma mater, Oklahoma State University, divided evenly between academics and athletics.

Andrew “Andy” Beal CEO, Beal Bank Andrew “Andy” Beal is founder and Chief Executive Officer of Beal Financial Corporation, which includes two FDIC-insured banks, Beal Bank, based in Texas and founded in 1988, and Beal Bank USA, based in Nevada and founded in 2004.

Lisa W. Hess

President and Managing Partner, SkyTop Capital Management Lisa W. Hess is President and Managing Partner of SkyTop Capital Management, an opportunistic hedge fund focused on industries and companies undergoing a transformation. She has 38 years of experience on Wall Street.

From 2002 to 2008, she was the Chief Investment Officer of Loews Corporation, responsible for managing $50 billion in assets, including fixed income, equities, and alternatives. Prior to her career at Loews, Ms. Hess was a Founding Partner of Zesiger Capital Group, a diversified money manager dedicated to investing across all asset classes. She is a Trustee of TIAA and serves on the Board of Directors of Radian Group, Inc. Professional honors include serving on the United States Debt Advisory Committee from 1996 to 2002 and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York Investors Advisory Committee.

From 2002 to 2010, Ms. Hess wrote a regular column for Forbes entitled “Absolute Return.”

She received her MBA from The University of Chicago and her A.B. from Harvard University.

Caroline Cooley

Partner, Crestline Investors, Inc. Caroline Cooley is Chief Investment Officer of Crestline’s Hedge Fund Solutions business and leads the Oversight Committee for Crestline Summit Equity Alpha fund. She also serves on the firm’s Investment and Executive Committees. Ms. Cooley has over 33 years of experience in the alternative investment industry as a portfolio manager, risk manager and trader. Ms. Cooley has led the Hedge Fund Solutions team at Crestline, overseeing manager selection and portfolio management, since joining the firm in 1998. Before joining Crestline, Ms. Cooley was a derivatives trader and risk manager with Taylor and Company, an investment firm associated with the Bass Family of Fort Worth, Texas. Ms. Cooley began her career in the investment industry at Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company (later merged into JP Morgan) in New York and Chicago after receiving her B.A. in Economics from The College of William and Mary in 1983. Ms. Cooley serves on the Advisory Board of Texas Wall Street Women and is the Vice-Chair of the Investment Advisory Committee of Texas Employee Retirement System.

Crestline Investors, Inc., founded in 1997 and based in Fort Worth, Texas, is an institutional alternative investment management firm with approximately $9 billion of assets under management. Crestline specializes in credit and opportunistic investments, as well as hedge fund and beta solutions. In addition to its Fort Worth, Texas headquarters, Crestline maintains affiliate offices in New York City, Chicago, London, Toronto and Tokyo.

Speakers Michael F. Price

President of The Price Family Foundation, Inc.; Managing Member of MFP Investors LLC Michael F. Price earned his bachelor’s degree in 1973 from the University of Oklahoma. In 1999 the University of Oklahoma honored him with a Doctor of Humane Letters.

Mr. Price was Chairman of the Board of Franklin Mutual Advisers and Franklin Mutual Series Fund. He had been associated with both entities and their predecessor organizations since 1975. At that time the adviser was known as Heine Securities Corp. and the fund was Mutual Shares Fund.

Mr. Price was Vice President of the fund from 1975 until 1986. From 1986 until November 1, 1998 he was CEO, President and Chairman of the Board of the adviser and the fund, which came to be known as Mutual Series Fund.

Presently, Mr. Price is the President of The Price Family Foundation, Inc.; Managing Member of MFP Investors LLC; and Managing Partner of MFP Partners, L.P. He also serves as a Director of Liquidnet Holdings, an Investment Advisory Council Member to the Florida State Board of Administration and on Boards for The Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Jazz at Lincoln Center and Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics.

William W. Priest, CFA

CEO, Co-CIO, and Portfolio Manager, Epoch Investment Partners, Inc. William W. Priest is Chief Executive Officer and Co-Chief Investment Officer of Epoch Investment Partners, a long-only equity management firm located in New York City. Founded in 2004, the firm manages approximately $50 billion for clients all over the world. He is a portfolio manager for Epoch’s global equity investment strategies and leads the Investment Policy Group, a forum for analyzing broader secular and cyclical trends that influence investment opportunities.

Prior to co-founding Epoch in 2004 with three partners, Bill was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Credit Suisse Asset Management Americas and CEO and portfolio manager of its predecessor firm BEA Associates which he co-founded in 1972.

Bill is the author of over 65 white papers and several published articles and papers on investing and finance, including three books, The Financial Reality of Pension Funding Under ERISA; Free Cash Flow and Shareholder Yield: New Priorities for the Global Investor; and most recently, Winning at Active Management: The Essential Roles of Culture, Philosophy and Technology published by Wiley.

He is a CFA, a former CPA, and a graduate of both Duke University and the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton Graduate School of Business. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Barron’s Roundtable.

Ray Nixon, Jr.

Executive Director, Large Cap Value Equity Portfolio Manager, Barrow, Hanley, Mewhinney & Strauss, LLC Ray Nixon is the Executive Director and a Portfolio Manager at Barrow, Hanley, Mewhinney & Strauss, LLC. Barrow Hanley, founded in 1979, is one of the largest value-oriented investment managers of institutional assets in the U.S. The approximately ninety billion dollar firm provides value-oriented investment strategies to institutional investors, mutual funds, and family offices on five continents.

Mr. Nixon joined BHMS in 1994 from Smith Barney, Inc., where he was a member of the firm’s Investment Policy Committee and served as their lead institutional stockbroker for the Southwest. During his thirty-seven year investment career, he also served as a research analyst for the Teacher Retirement System of Texas. Mr. Nixon holds a BA and an MBA from the University of Texas.

Mr. Nixon is a Trustee of the UT Southwestern Foundation and a member of the McCombs School of Business Advisory Council. He is a current board member of East West Ministries and the Salvation Army. Moreover, he chairs the investment committee of the Texas Health Resources four billion dollar endowment. He was formerly on the Board of Directors and the Strategic Advisory Board of the CFA Society of Dallas-Fort Worth. In 2015, Mr. Nixon was inducted into the University of Texas McCombs School of Business Hall of Fame. Recently, Mr. Nixon has joined the UTIMCO board, a thirty-five billion dollar endowment for the University of Texas.

Susan M. Byrne

Founder and Vice Chairman of the Board, Westwood Holdings Group, Inc. Susan M. Byrne is the Founder and Vice Chairman of Westwood Holdings Group, Inc. a registered investment advisor trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE:WHG). Ms. Byrne served as the company’s Chief Investment Officer from inception until 2011.

She retired in June of 2015 and now serves as a consultant.

Founded in 1983, Westwood serves a variety of institutional clients, such as corporate pension funds, religious organizations, endowments and foundations. In addition, Westwood is the investment advisor to The WHG Funds, a family of open-ended mutual funds.

Ms. Byrne serves on the Boards of Westwood Management and Westwood International Advisors (WIA), WHG subsidiaries and the Westwood Investment Funds plc (an Irish UCITS fund).

Westwood Management currently manages over $21 billion in assets.

Ms. Byrne currently serves as Vice Chairman of the WHG Board as well as a Board Member of Westwood Trust, WHG’s subsidiary serving high net worth investors. Westwood Trust offers trust and investment services through the use of commingled funds and customized portfolios. She is a Trustee of the Dallas Mayor’s Grow South initiative to enhance economic activity in the southern sector of the city. She is a Trustee of The Dallas Museum of Art, where she serves as Treasurer. In addition, she also serves on their Executive, Audit and Investment committees.

Ms. Byrne is a member of both the New York and Dallas Societies of Securities Analysts. She has been featured on CNBC and in numerous financial publications such as; Barron’s, Smart Money, The Wall Street Journal, Kiplinger and Fortune. Ms. Byrne has over forty-five years of Wall Street, portfolio management and plan sponsor experience.

Speakers Mario J. Gabelli, CFA Chairman and CEO, GAMCO Investors, Inc. Mario J. Gabelli is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of GAMCO Investors, Inc. and LICT Corp.

Mr. Gabelli is a summa cum laude graduate of Fordham University and holds an MBA degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Business, and an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Roger Williams University and Fordham University.

Mr. Gabelli is a member of the Board of Overseers of Columbia University Graduate School of Business, the Board of Trustees of Boston College and the Board of Trustees of Roger Williams University.

He is a member of the Board of Directors of the American-Italian Cancer Foundation and the Foundation for Italian Art & Culture. He is a Trustee of the Winston Churchill Foundation of the United States and the E. L. Wiegand Foundation. He is a member of the Economic Club of New York.

Mr. Gabelli was Morningstar’s Portfolio Manager of the Year (1997) and Institutional Investor’s Money Manager of the Year (2011) and is a member of Barron’s Financial Magazine’s All Star Century Team.

David Einhorn

President, Greenlight Capital, Inc. David Einhorn is president of Greenlight Capital, Inc., which he co-founded in January 1996. Greenlight Capital is a value-oriented investment advisor whose goal is to achieve high absolute rates of return while minimizing the risk of capital loss.

Greenlight’s investment philosophy is to combine the analytical discipline of determining fair value with a practical understanding of markets. The firm believes that an investment approach that emphasizes intrinsic value will achieve consistent absolute investment returns and safeguard capital regardless of market conditions.

Prior to founding Greenlight Capital, Inc., Mr. Einhorn worked at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette (DLJ) as an analyst in the Investment Banking Group. After DLJ, he joined Siegler, Collery & Co., a buyout and investment management firm, as an investment analyst.

Mr. Einhorn is Chairman of the Board of Greenlight Capital Re, Ltd. (NASDAQ:GLRE) and Chairman of the Board of Green Brick Partners, Inc. (NASDAQ:GRBK). He is the author of Fooling Some of the People All of the Time: A Long Short Story, published in May 2008.

Mr. Einhorn graduated summa cum laude with distinction in all subjects from Cornell University, where he earned a B.A. from the College of Arts and Sciences.

Gretchen Morgenson (Moderator) Assistant Business and Financial Editor, The New York Times Gretchen Morgenson has been Assistant Business and Financial Editor and a Columnist at The New York Times since 1998. She covers the world financial markets and won the Pulitzer Prize in 2002 for her “trenchant and incisive” coverage of Wall Street.

In 2009, Ms. Morgenson won a Gerald Loeb Award in the “Beat Writing” category for her coverage of Wall Street. This followed her Gerald Loeb Award for excellence in financial commentary in 2002 and the American University School of Communication’s Annual Journalism Award for excellence in personal finance reporting in 2000.

Ms. Morgenson began her career at Vogue magazine as an Assistant Editor in 1976. By the time she left the magazine in 1981, she was a writer and financial columnist. She has filled the roles of Assistant Managing Editor and Investigative Business Writer and Editor at Forbes magazine, Press Secretary for the Forbes for President Campaign, Executive Editor for Worth magazine, Staff Writer at Money magazine, and Stockbroker for Dean Witter Reynolds in New York from 1981 to 1984. Ms. Morgenson received a B.A. degree in English and History from Saint Olaf College.

She is co-author of The New York Times bestseller Reckless Endangerment, published by Times Books in May 2011.

The Michael J. Fox Foundation Since its founding in 2000, The Michael J. Fox Foundation (MJFF) has funded more than $650 million in Parkinson’s disease research, fundamentally altering the trajectory of progress toward a cure. Since dollars alone cannot end Parkinson’s, MJFF develops innovative strategies to engage scientists, Parkinson’s patients and industry partners to accelerate new treatments. Funds are deployed as quickly and wisely as possible for making maximum impact.

MJFF works to streamline the complex drug development process creating its own blueprint for getting breakthrough therapies into patients’ hands faster. The Foundation believes its capital should elevate promising early-stage research to the attention of larger funders that can support the more costly work that comes in later stages. MJFF takes the calculated risks that other investors cannot or will not in order to further ideas and therapies that face scientific or business roadblocks. MJFF is heartened by the successes it sees at every stage of the therapeutic development pipeline—and believes its approach holds implications for medical research across all diseases, not just Parkinson’s.

GIBI has been a generous partner to MJFF since 2007, with total contributions of more than $5 million towards an aggressive research agenda—helping to make a real difference in the search for improved therapies and, ultimately, a cure.

Vickery Meadow Youth Development Foundation The Vickery Meadow Youth Development Foundation (VMYDF) was created in 2007 by John Neill to bridge the gap of inequality for children born into poverty, and to help them develop to their full potential. With your help, the VMYDF provides a pipeline of programs from early childhood, through elementary school, in middle and high school, and into higher education.

Opportunities provided by the Foundation are available to the 7,000 children of the Vickery Meadow neighborhood of northeast Dallas. This area totals 2.6 square miles and is home to 27,000 residents, 40 nationalities and 40 languages. This is an area in which the average family income is $24,000 per year and the average family size is 5.3 members. Vickery Meadow’s infrastructure was not designed to accommodate a population of this size, nor does it provide basic services needed by these families.

One of the many reasons donors enjoy investing in this award winning Foundation is because the entire donation is used for programs for children. The board covers the administrative expenses of the Foundation so that your money can be utilized for children.

Here are some of the ways GIBI’s contributions, totaling more than $5 million, have impacted the lives of over 7,000 children each year: • The VMYDF EAGLE Scholar program provides over 250 hours of college readiness training for 140 middle school and high school students.

• Students in the VMYDF college scholarship program are beating the odds and graduating from college. Fifteen students have completed four year colleges.

Most are the first in their families to attend college.

• Working collaboratively, the VMYDF has doubled the number of preschool students receiving early childhood education.

• Annual trips to Washington D.C. and Memphis, Tennessee for over 450 middle school students (some of whom had never previously stayed in a hotel or visited a museum).

• Texas history trip to Austin and San Antonio for over 450 students.

• 3,000 children have received free books from “Reading is Fundamental” and Book Fairs.

• 2000 children stayed safe and motivated by participating in after school and summer programs.

Co-Founders

John Neill Partner, Telesis Company John Neill, an Oklahoma native, completed his B.A. at Yale and his M.B.A. at Harvard, where he met his business partner, Steve Rush.

Together they co-founded Telesis Company in 1969. John lives in Dallas with Barbara, his wife of 48 years. They have three grown children. Barbara and John personally donate time and resources to the Vickery Meadow Youth Development Foundation’s programs, as do its board, full-time employees, and scores of community volunteers.

Mr. Neill first became actively involved in the Vickery Meadow community after he and Mr. Rush built Walnut Place, an assisted living residence and nursing care facility, across from Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. At the time, 1980, Vickery Meadow was populated by young professionals.

But only a few years later, following changes in housing laws and a real estate downturn, Vickery Meadow had become the crowded home of more than 50,000 residents within a three-mile radius.

Many of the residents are refugee families; almost all are low-income. Particularly struck by the many needs—developmental, educational, and recreational—of the children in the area, Mr. Neill founded and still chairs the Vickery Meadow Youth Development Foundation (VMYDF). The programs VMYDF supports focus on academics, sports, character development, and early childhood development for children living in Vickery Meadow. Its signature program is Eagle Scholars, a vibrant six-year academic enrichment program for students from seventh grade through graduation.

Summer camps, after-school activities, and college scholarships are also funded by the Foundation.

The mission and daily endeavor of the Foundation is to bridge the gap of inequality for the children of Vickery Meadow, born into poverty, and help them develop to their full potential.

Shad Rowe Managing Partner, Greenbrier Partners, Ltd. In 1985, Mr. Rowe founded Greenbrier Partners, Ltd., a private partnership which invests primarily in publicly-traded securities.

He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1998 and happily admits that his interest in finding a cure is self-serving.

Mr. Rowe is currently a board member of The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, president of the Investors for Director Accountability Foundation, a member of the Executive Committee of Texans for Lawsuit Reform, serves on the Investment Committee of Texas Health Resources, a former trustee of the Employees Retirement System of Texas, and a former chair of the Texas Pension Review Board.

Mr. Rowe’s articles have appeared in Forbes, Fortune, Barron’s, The American Banker, Southpoint, Texas Monthly, D Magazine and Grant’s Interest Rate Observer. His comments have appeared in The New York Times, Bloomberg Markets, The Wall Street Journal, The Dallas Morning News and on CNBC and Bloomberg Television.

Mr. Rowe received a B.A. in History from Southern Methodist University and an M.B.A. from The University of Texas at Austin.

Mr. Rowe and his wife of 40 years, Michele, live in Dallas. They have four grown children.
