hen the school year begins, youngsters at St. Philip’s School & Community Center in Dallas, Texas, will use their new cameras and laptops to make videos featuring robotics and items created by their 3D printer. At Le Conte Middle School in Hollywood, California, teacher Miguel Darce will have upgraded his students’ learning tools with $5,000 worth of supplies and projects related to STEAM — that is, the dynamic blend of science, technology, engineering, arts and math. These gifts are courtesy of the College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation and its conference partners, and part of the first wave of positive impact that the organization’s Extra Yard for Teachers (EYFT) initiative will have this upcoming school year.

Kickoff is also the culmination of a multi-day showcase for the CFP Foundation. Beginning this summer, the CFP Foundation and Bay Area Host Committee partnership took

off in full speed to bring EYFT to the Bay Area. When January rolls around, this partnership will have put $1 million into supporting the educational community. Teachers from a nine-county region are already taking part in a professional development initiative based around STEAM integration. As for championship weekend highlights:

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) ASCD held the 2018 ASCD Conference on Teaching Excellence at the end of June in Grapevine, Texas. The CFP Foundation co-hosted a special session with several emerging leaders in the teaching profession to educate attendees about teacher shortages and what can be done about the growing issue. Additional topics of conversation were barriers teachers face coming into the profession as well as some key ingredients to make sure teachers continue to enjoy their important work.

The National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI)

The National Network of State Teachers of the Year (NNSTOY)

NMSI hosted their Laying the Foundation SI in San Jose, California, July 23-26, a professional development conference dedicated to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) fundamentals. To support this event, the CFP Foundation partnered with NMSI to sponsor a social and provide tools and other items for attendees. “They spent three rigorous days working on STEM curriculum, strategies to enhance STEM learning, and the teachers’ ability to teach STEM lessons,” says Britton Banowsky, CFP Foundation Executive Director.

NNSTOY hosted the 2018 National Teacher Leadership Conference, July 8-11, in Las Vegas, Nevada. This event attracted more than 300 former State Teachers of the Year from all over the country. The conference covered important topics such as leadership, student engagement, educational equity and emotional learning. The CFP Foundation was on hand as a major sponsor and hosted a reception to show appreciation to the educators in attendance.

Levine is the executive director of TEACH.org, an organization launched by Microsoft and the U.S. Department of Education to help pave the path into teaching for anyone interested. His speech is fascinating — and frightening. Because the number of teachers needed is growing far faster than the number entering the profession, we’re headed

toward a shortage of 100,000 teachers, a figure that extrapolates to impacting around 10 million students. Certain subject areas are especially lacking. Men of color are needed everywhere. Throughout the ballroom, heads nod. Teachers and other education thought leaders in the crowd are well aware of this issue. Then there’s CFP Foundation Executive Director Britton Banowsky. While he was aware of a teacher shortage, he had no idea the outlook was this bleak. And then he realized something else: The CFP Foundation could be part of the solution.

s much as the upcoming College Football Playoff (CFP) National Championship is about football — and, of course, the game is all about crowning the top team — the buildup to the event and its legacy are rooted in education. For the 2019 CFP National Championship at Levi’s Stadium in the Bay Area, that focus is specifically on STEAM. The acronym stands for curriculum based on science, technology, engineering, the arts and math. The acronym STEM is used in school districts where the arts are not part of the focus.

It’s hardly a surprise that folks in the forward-thinking, tech-focused Silicon Valley are STEAM advocates. Among the proponents are the San Francisco 49ers who’ve built an entire education program for students from kindergarten through eighth grade using specially designed classrooms inside Levi’s Stadium. Since the CFP Foundation is all about education — and, historically, supporting the education initiatives that mean the most to the host community — it’s also no surprise that the organization’s focus this year is supporting STEAM programs in the nine-county region.

The CFP Foundation outlined those plans at the kickoff news conference for the 2019 national championship game held, fittingly, at the Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose on April 11. Also fitting: The guests of honor included two dozen third-grade students from Kathryn Hughes Elementary School in Santa Clara and their teacher, Jennifer Erickson. Ted Robinson, the “voice of the 49ers,” emceed. He was joined on stage by a parade of special guests: CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock, Executive Board Member of the Bay Area Host Committee (and former

he Extra Yard for Teachers (EYFT) Summit takes place every year in conjunction with the College Football Playoff National Championship. It’s a time to honor and celebrate the important work teachers do, giving them an atmosphere to network, hear inspiring speakers, participate in workshops and see incredible performances. The first event was held during the weekend of the 2015 national championship game in Dallas, TX with around 400 teachers in attendance and has grown to attract more than 2,500 teachers.

The EYFT Summit is a culmination of the College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation’s mission to equip and empower the teaching profession. It’s also a halftime break in the middle of the school year when most teachers are preparing for the second semester. “Teachers need to be celebrated and empowered, and we can create this environment at a time when they need it most,” says Britton Banowsky, Executive Director of the CFP Foundation. “They are so appreciative to have the opportunity to just relax with their peers and engage in a highly

produced event that celebrates the teaching profession.” Candace Butler, a teacher from the Atlanta area, attended the 2018 EYFT Summit. “It was insightful and very respectful and redeeming to have actual teachers talking to us about what we do every day,” she said. Sharon Lyle is President of Ensemble, the company that produces the EYFT Summit. She’s been involved with the event since the beginning, helping to create the design, develop the content, and the coordinate the speakers and performers.
